Kar sat twirling her hair in her fingers as she listened to Zo talk. She slouched down into the couch and crossed her ankle over her knee and began to shake her foot, her eyes narrowed as she began to play through her daily routine to see if there was anything she could think of that would call attention to her.

She looked at her sister and realized that Zo was right. How they dressed, how they acted, everything had to be normal. She rubbed her temples and looked at Zo, “So we just have to make sure we are dressing and acting like everyone else. I mean for all they know Isis is doing romantic carriage rides around the city, easy enough, pick up a fare now and again. It would bring in money for you, make up some ******** story about the city.” She smiled as a thought crossed her mind, “Hell both of you could play on the “vampire epidemic”. Make some money off them; feed them a bunch of lies. Cookies shaped like Dracula, tea and garlic and cheese biscuits. Vampire dust, which is a $1, can of glitter to make them look like those make believe vampires. I don’t know it seems like the best place to hide is being obvious.”

She tapped her finger against a tooth and stood her animation evident as she went and sat on the armrest next to Zo. “They will assume we are going to hide from them. I mean, we can’t be stupid about it but why not feed false information that movies has already fed them. They’ll be looking for that.”

Leaning over she kissed the top of Zo’s head. She knew the woman was worried about them and was most likely beating herself up for somehow not stopping it from happening. She toyed with Zo’s hair as she let her idea sink in so Zo could find the flaws that would get them caught.

Iris sat without movement. Still and silent like there was someone with a paintbrush and a canvas centered in the room attempting to capture the moment for all time. Her chin was held up casual but high enough that it required her cornflower orbs to look down at the floor when Karema spoke. There was nothing to catch and nothing was amiss. Her points were valid.

“I believe Karema is correct.” Iris finally spoke when it appeared that her sister was finished with her delivery of what would be a good plan. If nothing else it gave them time to plan on what to do for the immediate future. “I stand out no more than you do with all do respect.” Her gaze found her sire and she nodded. “My shops are profitable, my customers find my attire part of the overall theme.” A rare wink came from the young telepath to both women she was sharing space with in the room. “And it works.”

Iris stood up slowly and brushed the layers of her dress down. She had grown considerably in her abilities since her sire saved her life. No crime was committed. In short it was no different than someone getting a new heart to replace one that was no longer working. Iris was dying and Zodiac was watching. If it wasn’t for her intervention that night she would not be in her victorian attire, a member of the business community bringing something unique and different to a city that didn’t have it before. Now they would try to judge her? Wihtout walking a single step in her button up leather boots?

If those people were truly going to judge her based on nothing more than how she appeared, existed which has been of no harm to them then they would be finding their nights a little less safe. Despite being called Mary Poppins more times than she could count she was much more than a song and dance and a parasol over her head. She would bring forth every power at her disposal and much more to say she was not going anywhere.

“And when the few that are insistant on creating chaos try to break through and threaten or routine or presence then we deal with it as we have the powers to do.” Iris glanced to both.

She listened to them both as they offered up their own ideas. Yes, both of them were viewing the problem from a unique perspective as she had always hoped. Zodiac never wanted parrots for offspring, but individuals who could think. She had been thinking in terms of survival, but the idea of profit was quite another matter as she began to see this with new eyes.

”I never meant to imply we stop being who we are,” she looked directly at Iris. ”All I was saying is our normal ‘styles’ is what is attracting this early round of attention is all. How we move on from here will dictate the pace of what happens next.”

She glanced up at Karema next. ”And I think you are on to something, brat.” she grinned as she stood up. Suddenly she was animated as she walked about the room. ”Remember when we had that small wave of ghost hunters descend on the town? I could not keep enough books on the shelves concerning the paranormal. People just kept buying them up like crazy. This is no different.”

“You could expand into haunted tours of the town. Areas where supposed vampires are said to sleep in their graves.”
the gypsy was smiling like a shark now as she grabbed Iris’ hand and squeezed. ”I am sure visitors would be willing to pay extra for such a thing. Then when you stop over here and your clients get out for a refreshing cup of tea,” she turned again to face Karema and grabbed her hand as well. ”I have watched you work. That is-when you bother to show up to work. Discounting the letches who ogle you, the majority who comes in enjoy talking to you when you serve them. Many have told me you are a friendly and helpful sort. Table talk will be buzzing with the vampire thing, so feed that fire the way we want it fed.”

Zodiac let go of her children’s hands and spun in a circle as she cackled in their minds. ”It’s called controlling the media. Telling people the news you want them to hear and hiding the rest. Hell, America is all ate up with that now, so why not us? We spin the story just right the money will come rolling in instead of people with torches and pitchforks.”

Now her mind was racing at warp speed. A few ideas and suggestions to pass on to Cinnamon as well occurred to her. She did not reply when she texted, but the link they shared told the gypsy the dancer was fine. ”I bet we could even stage a few ‘incidents’ to keep people interested.” Dimly she pictured Jennifer suddenly dashing into the shop at the right moment, holding her neck which upon inspection would reveal the two classic fang wounds associated with such creatures. ‘No worries’ Zodiac would assure her customers. ‘They can’t get in here. Be safe, enjoy.’ As all the while her sales people suggesting items to help one cope with the dangers of the undead. The fictional undead, of course. All major credit cards accepted.

”Seems we have our work cut out for us, my loves.” Zodiac pulled the two women into a group hug. Her inner circle was safe. That had been her main worry in all of this. The rest was going to be cherries and whipped crème if the ideas worked. If not, Iris was right-they could fight back, but if they could make a profit instead of violence...

”PT Barnum once said ‘There’s a sucker born every minute.’ And, as I learned from a few tattoo artists ‘We do not cure the disease but cater to the symptoms.’ So ladies, if we three bloodsuckers play our cards rights, the real suckers will be paying us to out fox them and paying us gladly.”

Mentally she began to sing a tune she had heard years ago to her children.
Opportunity. Opportunity, is knocking at your door.
Opportunity. Knocks just once, *tap, tap* and don’t come back no more…
Grab it from the left,
Grab it from the right,
Grab it in the middle and hold it tight,
You gotta snatch and grab it,
Snatch and grab it,
Better snatch and grab it, before it gets away....
Some day I'm gonna be happy. I don't know when just now

Karema sat there with a smirk on her face doing her best not to laugh at Zo’s animation. She could see the wheels turning in the woman’s mind and knew she would have them all whipped into a frenzy to begin making a profit off the human’s fears and curiousness very quickly. The gypsy was a force to be reckoned with when she got to plotting and there was much potential in this and help keep their lives hidden.

“Hiding in plain sight is the oldest trick in the book and no one ever expects it. I can feed them gossip as to where to find them and such as, I serve them. We could even get a TV in here and have vampire night where and play family friendly vampire flicks for families and after 9:00 pm go total adult and play more of the violent ones. Advertise and have people dress up. Totally feed into every corny myth we can find. We could even do center pieces with cloves of garlic for the table. It’s limitless at what we can do.”

Zo pulled them into a group hugged and squeezed both women and let her hand slide down to Zo’s derriere and squeezed it and giggled jumping away before she got smacked. She blew her a kiss from several feet away and then looked at the woman in all seriousness.

“How soon do we start?”

Once Karema asked the question Iris was curious how Zodiac would answer. Eventually it would be across the papers, the paparazzi rags and everyone from all parts of the world and their press would be rolling in. The government presence would surely increase as well. They flooded anywhere mass hysteria started. Certainly the fact that vampires were real would set a few fires. What if they tried to quarantine the whole city? Could they? Not that it would matter to her. She couldn’t remember the last time she left the surrounding areas except to search the wilderness in the early stages of her training in rituals.

“Halloween can’t come soon enough. Depending on how widespread this is it could be wise to have you check with some of those you know and get an idea of how they are planning to deal with it when it comes to their own? Some of the elders? At this point networking could not hurt. The paladins seem to be nearly non-existent or they may have just got quiet. Which perhaps is not a good thing. The blood thieves I know of I trust. Well, the one. He may not represent all but I know he isn’t oblivious to who he is employed by. Has never asked anything of me or tried to extort. He has never asked for time off come to think of it and never calls in sick.” Her eyes found Zodiac after glancing to Karema. “Have you spoke to Mordechai?”

Iris was almost inclined contact the gentleman herself. They had routine contact through business. The horses he owned were residing on her property as was were Zodiac’s. It was not like her to reach out about political or personal matters but this was not something that could be left until things were out of hand. She waited patiently going quiet so that her questions and suggestions could be given some thought. While she did grand ideas formed as how she could use her powers to manage what came her way independently if needed. as soon as she arrived home she would be speaking with Hagen. Telepathic messages between them were considered acceptable for trivial communication or dire immediate warnings. This was a topic that would be involving discussion. It was how they dealt with things. Surely he had already discovered what was going on as she had.
