Dragon's Bane [Alexandrea]

Every man has his weakness. No matter how superhuman he is, no matter how immortal. In purely biological terms, Humans are weak animals. That weakness becomes obvious as soon as he is born. Babies of other animals tend to adapt themselves to their environment in a short space of time and can sustain their lives on their own. Infantile venomous snakes are just as dangerous as their adult variants, some shark embryos cannibalise their siblings in the womb, and birds can fledge in just fourteen weeks. However, babies of Human beings can hardly stand on their feet in two years. He learns the hazards and benefits of being alive only partly in around 15 to 20 years. And he learns about life all his life - around 100 years, if he’s lucky.

Moreover, man is very sensitive. He can stand neither extreme heat nor extreme cold. The average Human body temperature is 37 degrees celsius or 99 degrees fahrenheit, with fatalities occurring just 1 to 3 degrees above and below that temperature. Man can’t cope with hunger or thirst either; the Human body can survive roughly 21 days without food, but only 10 days without water. Even something as small as a microbe can knock him down. A comet can scare him to death. While thinking about the past makes him mournful, thinking about the future makes him worried. His wishes, hopes, and dreams are sometimes endless - and so are his nightmares.

Man also has humane weaknesses; those weaknesses that are sometimes habits and characteristics. For some it’s gambling, drinking, being a control freak, loving too much or too little. It’s the type of irrational ******** that endangers his life because at one point in time he deemed it worthy of commanding such power over him and now he’s stuck with it. The humane weakness of man, his bane, and his finalities are the things he does to himself. So if he can put an end to his biological weaknesses, then all else that is stopping him is ultimately survivable.

Levi didn’t need to put a label on his weakness because Gino had spent about 20 years hallmarking the **** out of the thing. He’d called it sentimentality; that quiet, calm feeling of affection that stuck into the ribs like a loved one’s dagger. Because you don’t see it coming when it’s someone you love. Because it’s not even something you think is harmful at the time when you’re drunk on the good times. It’s only in those quiet moments that your mind begins to wander and you watch their face; how their eyes squint and move about like rolling marbles, how their skin wrinkles to show a frown or smile of a thought. All the while you’re questioning their loyalty and how it quantifies against your own. It always comes down to a question: is it worth it?

It was only a blink, a flicker, and then a short walk to the store with the fanciful name: Quartermaine Custom Creations. The Italian was as familiar with the owner as he was with the planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining of the diverse physical infrastructures involved with submarines. Still, at least they didn't seem like they were preparing to sink each other's battleships just yet. Levi acknowledged Alexandrea as one of Harper Rock's last standing big players, and while he'd preferred to remain anonymous - if not entirely ******* invisible - to these players for as long as possible, fate had other ideas. With the way things were headed these days, it seemed like the world was on fire around their kind, leaving them with the choice of fighting for a prime spot to burn eternally on the top of the ashes, or stand together and fight the flames.

As a small mark of respect, the Vampiro blazed through a cigarette outside the store and stomped out the cherry toward the eave of the doorway before disposing of it discretely with a slide of a black loafer. When he entered the store, his footsteps fell as soft as leaves on the polished floor despite his imposing appearance. The loud, open space made his skin tense beneath his charcoal shirt and black suit; instinct tugged at the shadows around him, drawing in the darkness like stretching satin into increasingly thinner lengths. Fortunately, the side-effect of the Shadow's discomfort was short lived and rather subtle when compared to the display of services, products, and promotions on display in Alexandrea's store. If anyone had noticed, it wasn't all that likely they could relate the fact to him. Still, Levi was more concerned with finding the blonde and enquiring about the rarer artefacts in her collection.
