Harrison’s job was not one that he got paid for. He was glad, at least, that he didn’t have to pay for groceries, though his electricity was often turned off due to late-paid electric bills. Lucky he was a vampire and didn’t need the warmth. It was a selfless job, one that the general populace of Harper Rock wouldn’t even see. But it was important to Harrison, and so he continued to do it. Couldn’t stop, really, unless the sight was taken from him.
From an early age he’d been able to see the ghosts of the dead, those who hadn’t moved on. Some were surprisingly lucid while others didn’t even know they were dead. Harrison’s self-appointed job was to talk to them, to try to figure out the reasons why they’re still clinging to the earthly realm. A priest, through and through, he tried to help them through their problems so that they could move on.
It was how he’d found himself on the rooftop. A ghost continued to jump, over and over again, reliving the moment of his suicide. Harrison found himself sitting for hours with the spirit, until finally he’d agreed to call the spirit’s mother. He wanted to apologise. He had regrets. As soon as the job was done and the tether was broken, Harrison found himself mentally exhausted, and with time enough now to properly explore the roof he’d found himself on.
It was rundown, yes, but only in that it in the semi-abandoned part of down, nearest the Quarantine Zone. There’d been a garden up here, which was now overgrown. A Jacuzzi, too. Curious, Harrison removed the Jacuzzi’s cover and pushed the button that would turn it on and – lo and behold! – bubbles rose to the surface, the water beginning to heat from the inside. Underwater lights lit up from below; the Jacuzzi itself was relatively clean. And how long since Harrison had indulged in this kind of thing? Surveying the rooftop, he determined it was definitely abandoned. The building had been empty when he’d climbed the stairs, no signs of life. He was alone. So why not?
Not wanting to get his clothes wet, he stripped them from his toned frame and slipped into the Jacuzzi. He reached over to tug his phone from his jacket pocket, preparing to send a message to Rikki to invite her up—but he heard a noise, like someone was climbing the fire escape.
Well, ****.
