Variety of questions

Post by Charles Crafter »

I'm sure somebody's got to be thinking at this point "Ugh, he's posting again" because I've done a ton of questions recently. So...sorry I guess? Right now some of these aren't necessary for me to continue gameplay, so it's not going to be a serious downer if people start ignoring me.

Anyway,

-Are NPC factions things you can actually join? I know there was the faction during the Find the Cure event with the Longslade militia and all, but does that go with any npc faction? Because I honestly think that would be interesting.

-Do all places that businesses can be attached to have to be bought through karma?

-(relating to rp) according to the wiki, paladins start having the abhorrence of vampires, but it can be subdued with willpower, and is probably related to the runes and powers. I've treated this a lot like an emotion that just shows up suddenly but can be gotten rid of temporarily by forcing oneself to basically calm down, though it will show up again later. Kind of like how some people will always say they hate a certain food, but after they try it they like it, but they'll still say they hate it later until they try it again. Sorry, best explanation I have there. Is that fine? (Lockland is the character, I have a few roleplays where he does this already)

Also, is it necessary for all paladins, like if one were to dual class from something else into paladin?
And could it be counted as a role-play curse, since it directly effects a characters personality and in such in a major way?

That's all I have right now.

Guess if anyone else has random questions they could probably just add them here if they didn't want to make a whole thread for it.

~You can apply to NPC factions (or you used to be able to at least) but as they are not run by a real player, no one is going to be able to approve your membership. And it would likely be a bug if you could actually. I am not positive, however.

~NO, you can buy any lair or apartment with in-game cash when they are available, and set them to be the businesses location. They don't even have to have any grid location. But if you want foot traffic in a private place you will need to open it up to the public.

~You should really ask those kinds of questions (regarding the Pally) on the Canon Q&A thread, if the wiki rp section doesn't cover it. But imo, what you describe sounds just fine. :) eta and I think the duel class pally that started off from a diff class, could go either way. Same as how a killer that crosses to allurist *could* assume some of those rp traits, if they have the pathfinders rp power. (and the consume food/drink power if applicable)

I have the Extremely Erratic curse for Gretchen, which I use to explain her fluctuating moods. It explains why she doesn't attack every vampire she crosses paths with, and sometimes does little more than take down names and sketch portraits of vampires found through Vampire Hunter. It's an aversion that activates fight or flight, and just because she's a trained fighter, doesn't mean that's her first and only reaction.

I intend on giving her other priorities in her life, things worth protecting and thereby keeping her from acting out due to a base instinct. It isn't fail safe, and in due course she'll deal some damage at random (yay for curse). As a dual classed paladin, she's pretty unshakeable in her belief that vampires are bad (a lot of that philosophy comes from her background), and she won't be admiring (she sees no beauty) or cutting them slack (they are held to a high standard given the corruption they represent in the grand scheme of all that is natural). She dislikes vampires, and that dislike drove her to be initiated. She dislikes them not only for what they represent as a whole, but due to personal experience with them.

Given enough interaction with someone, Gretchen might be able to see past what they are, but it'd be a slow process of eroding her defence mechanisms, and she'd definitely not be cute about it. That distrust and dislike wouldn't go away just because one person turned out not to be so bad, and her tolerance or potential acceptance for a vampire would not be transferrable to other vampires.

It begs the question though that if paladins are unable to escape their hatred for vampires.... what happens to those feelings when they are turned? Would that dislike be enough to keep them from asking for the bite when death was the only other option? What about dual blood thief / paladin characters? I'm assuming it's very open ended to give players a big grey area to work with, but I'm going to keep an eye on the question you posted in Q&A.

(Oh, she also has the Serial Killer curse. That said, the reason I got it is not associated to vampires, per say, but because of the power she'd be drawn to when someone else's life is in her hands. As a WOC - woman of colour - she is on the receiving end of systematic sexism and racism and all forms of bigotry that makes her -- Gretchen the girl, not Gretchen the hunter -- seek to remediate that power imbalance.)

In Flynn's case, his reactions to vampires are very situational. It depends on the circumstance in which he finds them and just who the vampire is. He is a paladin in a relationship with a vampire and a vampire-majority faction. When faced with those vampires, I refer to it as more of a..habituation. He has spent so much time around them that he no longer feels that extreme emotional or physical reactions. Like the buzzing oc a computer monitor that you don't even notice until the buzzing suddenly stop. However, strangers and NPCs that are known for being rogue/senselessly violent/etc (such as the Disciples, Lionelli, Helheim), he experiences a lot of tension and unease. And he feels a bit like a loaded gun with a hairpin trigger, in the sense that it won't take much to make him fire. BUT, he needs a REASON for that attack to happen. In his mind, it would be hypocritical to mercilessly attack any vampire he comes across when that would be the very thing he had a problem with a vampire doing to a human. That's not how he operates, and so...he is a little different in that vein.

It wasn't his dislike for vampires that drove him to be initiated, it was 1) his particular skill set due to his history and 2) A desire to protect the humans of Harper Rock from the undead that actually prove to be a very real, uncontrollable threat, and that isn't vampire specific. That refers to zombies, mooncalves, etc, too.

On the topic of dual classing, Flynn is also a Blood Thief with the curse Blood Addiction. He doesn't have the time or energy to worry about a hatred for vampires when it comes to getting the blood that he desperately craves. So, I do take the liberty of saying that having an impact on his behavior in regards to the species, but not to the extent that it is the only reason for that change. Now, should he go an extended period of time without that blood (more than a few days), then yes...I think he would act far more erratically, to the point that he might actually act more on those deeply ingrained instincts that are directly related to being a paladin (the tension, repulsion, etc), because he might feel the need to take the blood by force if he can't get it from a willing donor (since, at present, the blood is readily available to him by his vampire partner).

Just a thanks for the examples people have given!
It's also interesting to see how other people dealt with that.

hijacking this thread! :P

Someone remind me?

Regarding custom made firearms...
none of them ever end up using 10mm ammo., do they?

I hope I'm wrong about that but pretty sure I'm not.

What I got from the thread so far. I need to find some of you paladins so that we can have a rivalry. And have very fun role-play I like the way you guys described. Because Aden probably the type you want to shoot in the face even if he wasn't a vampire.

I think it was supposed to answer or ask a question if I join the threat. So ummm.

What ways can I make the abhorrence of vampires worse :) for paladins if come in contact with them?

Well I don't know about everyone else, but if you startled Lockland or didn't give him time to think he might try to kill you out of instinct more viciously then if a human did it. Or if he saw you feeding on someone that'd do it too.
Long term though, unless he knew you were still feeding on people or were actually a bad guy, I don't think he'd keep that up.

(Hey I'm all up for roleplaying that, not sure it'd work or not)
