The Beginning of the End

The following events are a prologue to her current status in Harper Rock.

It was one of those moments where time stood still.

No one moved – no one dared to breathe. The woman that was pinned beneath her fiancé didn’t even have the courage to blink. Her lipstick stained lips were parted, the red vibrant and smeared across her alabaster skin. River knew she would never again be able to stand that color. It would be a constant reminder of what she was witnessing. She somehow found the strength to tear her gaze from the brunette, her mis-matched eyes moving over the supple planes of her naked skin. The rise of breasts, the dip in her stomach – the tensing of her thighs until finally, painfully, she found the blonde hair of her fiancé. Her eyes were wide, the oceanic depths she had looked into and loved for years filled with guilt.

“Danika...”

The silence was broken with that agonized whisper, and slowly she shook her head. She felt the twist of pain in her chest, and she knew that she would never be the same. There was no way she would leave this unscathed, but she couldn’t speak. It was if something had settled into her throat, a heavy weight that blocked all words from forming. Everything she wanted to say – everything she wanted to scream – forever trapped inside of her. “Please, Dani. It’s not what it looks like. Please!” The bed creaked as Addison quickly began to untangle herself from the other woman, her bare feet slamming to the ground as she stumbled free. She watched as she hastily grasped for the sheets, as if pulling the ebony silk around her slender form would conceal the crimes she had just committed.

“Baby, please. No, no. Don’t go! Baby, please! Let me explain!”

She didn’t even realize she had begun to move. One moment she had been staring at the end of her world, and the next the scene had shifted. The walls she had lovingly painted to fit the desires of the woman behind her began to blur, the landscapes morphing into something dark and sinister. Tears burned her eyes as she pulled the keys off the hook, the metal tearing into the skin of her palms as she yanked the front door open. Behind her, another set of footsteps joined the quick scrambling of her fiancé, and she heard the harsh, hushed apologies as the brunette began to yank her dress from the floor. None of it mattered – the words, the sobs, the pleas fell on deaf ears. Without looking back, River quietly shut the door, the click of the lock signaling the finality of everything she had ever known.

She was back to being invisible.

Three days.

That was how long it took for her best friend to find her. Three days, and he was at her side, his fingers moving through her hair as he carefully lifted her from the ground. “Jesus ****, babygirl.” His voice was rough with emotion, but it had no effect on her. In those three days, everything had changed. She had slowly felt herself shutting down, and she swore she could feel the ice as it twisted through her heart. “Come on, let’s get you up. God, you reek. What did you do, bathe in a vat of bourbon?” The compassion in his voice was the only thing that stopped her from reacting – who was she kidding? She wouldn’t have reacted for anything. That was her problem, wasn’t it? That was what Addison had said over one of the thousand voicemails.

You never fought for me, Danika.
You just walked away.
I wanted something. Anything!
You could have reacted, you could have shown me you cared.
You just walked away.

The words echoed in her mind as her world suddenly tilted on its axis, the dank buildings blurring together as the ground swayed beneath her feet. “Go away, Daniel,” she finally whispered, her voice broken and her words slurred as she put her hands against his chest. “Just go away.” She knew that it was futile, really. He hadn’t abandoned her then – he wouldn’t leave her now. Instead, he pulled her closer to his chest and buried his face in her hair, uncaring that she smelled like stale alcohol and whatever other disgusting substances he had found her passed out in. “Give it up, Danika. You’re coming home with me,” he responded, his tone finale as he squeezed her.

Home.

That single word sent another stab of pain through her heart, the sound of Addison’s moans filling her mind as she replayed the memory again. “She cheated, Daniel. She cheated…” The whispers fell from her as if she still couldn’t believe what had happened. Turning her head, she hid her face against the crook of his shoulder, breathing in the scent of his Dark Chocolate cologne. If he said anything in response to her words, she never heard it. She could only see Addison in bed with the stranger, lips stained red as darkness claimed her once again.

God, she hated that color.
