The following events are a prologue to her current status in Harper Rock.
It was one of those moments where time stood still.
No one moved – no one dared to breathe. The woman that was pinned beneath her fiancé didn’t even have the courage to blink. Her lipstick stained lips were parted, the red vibrant and smeared across her alabaster skin. River knew she would never again be able to stand that color. It would be a constant reminder of what she was witnessing. She somehow found the strength to tear her gaze from the brunette, her mis-matched eyes moving over the supple planes of her naked skin. The rise of breasts, the dip in her stomach – the tensing of her thighs until finally, painfully, she found the blonde hair of her fiancé. Her eyes were wide, the oceanic depths she had looked into and loved for years filled with guilt.
“Danika...”
The silence was broken with that agonized whisper, and slowly she shook her head. She felt the twist of pain in her chest, and she knew that she would never be the same. There was no way she would leave this unscathed, but she couldn’t speak. It was if something had settled into her throat, a heavy weight that blocked all words from forming. Everything she wanted to say – everything she wanted to scream – forever trapped inside of her. “Please, Dani. It’s not what it looks like. Please!” The bed creaked as Addison quickly began to untangle herself from the other woman, her bare feet slamming to the ground as she stumbled free. She watched as she hastily grasped for the sheets, as if pulling the ebony silk around her slender form would conceal the crimes she had just committed.
“Baby, please. No, no. Don’t go! Baby, please! Let me explain!”
She didn’t even realize she had begun to move. One moment she had been staring at the end of her world, and the next the scene had shifted. The walls she had lovingly painted to fit the desires of the woman behind her began to blur, the landscapes morphing into something dark and sinister. Tears burned her eyes as she pulled the keys off the hook, the metal tearing into the skin of her palms as she yanked the front door open. Behind her, another set of footsteps joined the quick scrambling of her fiancé, and she heard the harsh, hushed apologies as the brunette began to yank her dress from the floor. None of it mattered – the words, the sobs, the pleas fell on deaf ears. Without looking back, River quietly shut the door, the click of the lock signaling the finality of everything she had ever known.
She was back to being invisible.
