Velveteen - Summer was ending. Meaning it would soon be autumn and it wouldn’t be long after that before the frigid temperatures of winter would have them more indoors than not. Well not so much the temperatures as the snow, the freezing rain and all the other general shitty weather types that winter here brought with it. The bike had been taking out this summer as the pair got caught up with other things and most of their alone time had been spent inside, locked away from the rest of the world. Except Texas. Those memories still lingered quite vividly and while they were only there a week, she found herself missing the heat of the hot summer nights. They reminded her of home.
Immediately that thought was pushed far far away. The less she thought some things the better it was. It was how she functioned. It made it easier to just not think about things that would only further complicate her. Emotions...or too many of them were a complication. So instead she thought about the night ahead and what to do with it. There had been some recent goings on with the faction over a strange shard that seemed to sent everyone a bit crazy, the required repairs to the Eyrie had been done and anything else that did need doing was put off for another time. It would be cold soon, best to enjoy what little warmth was left. A telepathic message was sent to her husband who was most likely at the castle killing Lionelli and gathering gun parts in the hope of returning with some lovely pieces for her. The thought made her smile. She did so love it when he brought her things.
Before heading out she checked her phone for the time. He had asked her earlier for spirits and she needed an energy regeneration herself but it could wait. She would do that when they came in. No rush. A couple of things were gathered and put into a backpack to take out to the river with her, including a couple of glasses, a bottle from Ari’s special storeroom, a blanket and an ipod. Music was a must. She could head out, get the fire started and have things set up by the time he arrived.
<Micah> Contrary to what his wife thought he was doing, he was doing something completely different. She’d found the notebook that he used from time to time to write down his thoughts in an attempt to sort through things. He wasn’t angry at her, it hadn’t been a secret but he was pleased to find something written it it from her. It had helped him to understand where her head had been during the time he was in the shadow realm. Her struggle had been real, and had been harder on her than he had originally thought. He had meant to respond to her but there was something that he needed to do first. Attempt to do that was, because this was something he had no clue about.
Micah was at the farm. Building a chicken coop, or a chook pen as Vel called it. She had specifically said that Henry needed one because his crowing was getting on her nerves. The killer had to agree with that. That ****** was loud and was about five seconds away from getting his neck snapped. The Eyrie was no place for a rooster. It wasn’t right to keep the sorry looking ******** in a cage all the time. Granted it was a really good sized cage but Henry belonged on the farm. With chickens. So that brought him to his current task, surrounded by board, tools and chicken wire with that stupid ******* rooster strutting around like it was no one’s business. Stupid thing in it’s stupid ******* top hat. Henry hated Vel but she was extremely attached to the stupid bird. Whatever. Long as she was happy in the end.
Her voice entered his mind as he was starting to clean up for the night. Henry was stuffed back into his cage and Bunny appeared to take him back to the Eyrie. Once the pen was completed he could roam around free so long as the scrawny ******** didn't **** with the plants that were growing there for rituals. Bunny shot him a glare and disappeared with Henry in tow while Micah used his tome to take him back to the Eyrie. After he changed his clothes he dropped the tome and his phone on the table and headed for the portal that would take him to the hotel. She hadn’t been very specific in her message but it shouldn’t be too difficult to find her.
Velveteen - The dark haired female grinned to herself as she felt the arrival of her husband. He was somewhere on top of the cliff, Likely on his way down. After all there wasn’t too many places she would be this far out. She was stretched out on the blanket with her fingers laced together beneath her head as she looked up at the sky. As usual there wasn’t a whole lot to see up there but clouds. Clouds that move slowly across the darkened sky allowing a glimpse of the stars and heavily rotund moon. It was so unlike the sky in Texas that was cloud free and littered with stars. Perhaps it become such that she had further romanticised the whole thing in her head but in her mind, the Texan sky was glorious. It look like someone had just taken a handful of tiny diamonds and casually thrown them , with no reason or rhyme. Yeah. She wanted to go back there. Soon.
Music played from the ipod dock a short distance away and her toe tapped rhythmically along with the beat. It was of course the one her husband had given her on their very first christmas together. The play list had grown since then but the meaning remained the same. “Don’t you land on me.” She said loud enough for her voice to filter upwards so that he would easily hear her. “Move towards the stairs if you plan on superman-ing it.”
<Micah> Faint music met his ears when he stepped outside of the hotel. A human wouldn’t be able to hear it but he could. She was listening to her Ipod wherever she was. best thing he had ever given her. Music had brought them together and even now it was a big part of their relationship. When he couldn’t find the words to tell her the things she needed to hear he played her a song, one that could say it better than he could ever hope to. That Ipod was full of songs just like that and it had become one of her most treasured possessions. Once in awhile he’d swipe it and add more just to see her face light up.
He stopped at the edge of the cliff as her voice drifted up to him, making him laugh when he heard her. He was tempted to take the stairs but now he was going to jump down. It was a pretty steep drop and the thrill of the freefall was almost indescribable. Before he took the plunge so to speak he moved a little further down just as she asked him to. She really would be pisssed off if he landed on her.
Velveteen - His laughter was infectious. She couldn’t help but smile as she pulled herself up to sit corr legged and wait for him. She looked up to the spot where she guessed he would be waiting for him to appear. Of course he would jump. She could imagine him saying stairs were for pussies if she even dared suggest he take that route. Though she would be the first admit, as well as she knew him, he had a tendency to surprise her...and did so often.
She enjoyed the quiet out here. The soothing sound of the fire crackling as it cast a golden glow over the area. The gentle lapping of the river against the banks as it moved steadily along its designated channel. Every now and then a splash could be heard as fish came to the surface to feed. Wolves howling could be heard in the distance and seemed to come from every direction and very occasionally there would be something else. Something that was more...otherworldly that would send a chill down her spine and remind her that there were other dangers out there.
While the fae seemed to not come too close to the hotel she knew they lurked in the shadows just out of sight. Watching. Waiting perhaps. What what she had no clue but again...another thought that was pushed aside. It was too hard and only raised more questions than answers. It was something she really should try and find out though. Ignorance could be bliss until it bit you on the *** because you never saw it coming. “I’m gonna die of old age before you get down here if you don’t hurry up.”
<Micah> He took a couple of steps forward and jumped off the edge of the cliff. The wind rushed past him and he hurtled downward at a breakneck speed. It was better than jumping off the top of beta Towers. Unfortunately it was over much too fast for his liking. His feet hit the ground without much of a sound and the landing was rather graceful or someone of his size. After brushing off his jeans he made his way towards her.
He could see why she liked it so much. The quiet though….without the music she was playing Micah didn’t think that he’d be able to stand it for too long. After the time he had spent in the shadow realm the quiet bothered him. He wasn’t afraid of it, more like unsettled. When he was ready to sleep for the day there had to be a source of sound now be it music or even a fan running. Only then was he able to sleep. And even when he was alone it was the same thing but that really didn’t happen all that often.
“Well hell woman, don’t want that to happen. Besides you’re already old. I don’t want to rush your impending death or anything.” Of course he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to tease her about her age. She’d probably think something was wrong with him if he didn’t.
Velveteen - “Mhmm….Kinda like you and your greying hair. The question is….will I still love you when you’re bald. I shall have to think about that.” The smirk betrayed her attempt at a serious expression and soon possessed her pale lips completely. “And fat. Bald and fat and stuck at vampire fat camp.” She leaned back a little as if inspecting his backside. “And by the look of that ***, I’d say it is a real possibility in about…..a thousand years.” She chuckled softly and set about filling the glasses from the bottle before handing him one. “I’d still love ya anyway.”
Her legs were stretched out before her and crossed at the ankles as she leaned back, propping herself upright with one outstretched arm behind. The glass was used to cover the wicked grin she wore and for now she made herself look completely engrossed with savouring the contents. “You should sit down before you fall down you feeble old thing.”
<Micah> He gave a shrug. “Least I still have a nice ***. Don’t much care about grey hair as long as I got that.” A grin was given to her, one of those ones that she liked so well, dimples and all. She was a sucker for that and he took advantage of it at every possible opportunity. “Or being fat for that matter cause you’ll ship me off to vampire fat camp. I’ll be back in shape in no time.” She was the only one that would ever be able to get away with saying that kind of stuff to him. And he liked that she had no problem giving it right back to him.
“Watch who you’re callin old and feeble woman. You’re the cougar round here not me, so I think that classifies you as the old one.” He did as she requested and took a seat beside her, stretching his legs out in front of him.
Velveteen - Her laughter filtered out over the inky, black depths of the river and she leaned into him as he sat, giving her husband a playful nudge. “I am sooo old. I mean, it’s lucky I got turned when I did. One foot in the grave and all.” She gave him a look and shook her head a little. He knew all too well what that smile did to her and exactly when to use it. Resistance was futile. “Guess it is just really lucky for me that yer into the old girls and all huh?”
She chuckled again and shook her head. After ingesting some more of the thick red fluid that half filled her glass she tilted her head a little. Her voice a little more serious in tone. “I was talking to Jupiter the other night. I think I made her mad but we got it sorted, I think. But there is something I need to talk to you about.” Her silvery gaze was cast his way as she wondered what he would think when she told him though another thought suddenly distracted her. “Oh hey...did you find some good parts at the castle tonight? I am running kinda low.”
<Micah> He moved closer and pressed his lips against her forehead. “You’re the only old girl I’ll ever want.” She was far from old, they both knew that but he loved to give her a hard time about the single year between them. Most would be offended by the teasing but not her and it made him love her all the more for it. “Turned at just the right time,” he nodded. “I’d thank that old dude that turned you but his reply to that would probably bore me to tears and age me.” He had never really cared for his wife’s sire even though he’d never really interacted with him.
A curious eyebrow was raised. “I’d ask how you pissed her off but I have a feeling it’s not really important right now. Or it’s not as important as what you want to talk to me about.” He hesitated a bit when she mentioned the castle. Did he tell her what he was doing or should he wait and surprise her with it? “I haven’t made it to the castle yet actually but I’ll go later on and hope that I get something good.”
Velveteen - The kiss brought a soft smile to her lips and could still be felt upon her skin even after he had moved away. More than often she easily forgot about the existence of one Zachariah Staus. He seemed little more than a vague memory of a life long past in a time that that existed a lot longer ago than the actual four years or so. Velveteen’s concept of time was skewed at best in most cases except when it came to memories of her husband. Those she could recall with vivid clarity as if they happened only days ago, not the years that had passed since the pair had met.
She was curious as to where he had been if not at the castle and made a mental note to ask about that later but her newest childe and the issues there seemed more important at the moment. “Well you know she is local right? Her family, friends and such. She is having a hard time coming to grips with things on that things. I told her if she promised to keep her head low and stay out of trouble and...not do anything stupid there I could buy her a little time. Before she was forced to make a decision” She had been watching her finger circle the smooth edge of her glass as she spoke and even winced a little as she finished. Such things could go either way with the man at her side and she had long since given up trying to predict it. “Though I told her if she couldn’t do that or if anyone began to suspect we would have to intervene. That them knowing anything could also put them in danger.” She added hastily.
Though she was beginning to wonder how true that even was anymore until they were completely exposed there was always hope.
<Micah> He listened to her without interruption even though there was so much that he wanted to say. This subject was one that he had a well known stance on and she knew it. That was probably why her tone seemed to be a little hesitant to his ears, because she was just waiting for him to criticize her for even entertaining the idea of buying Jupiter time. It was too big of a risk, one that he didn’t feel anyone should be taking just to spare the lives of Jupiter’s family. Of course not everyone shared his opinion and that was fine but he would fight tooth and nail for those loose ends to be tied up. The sooner the better.
“I don’t think that I need to tell you what I think about that. It should have already been done. Allowing her to continue to interact with her family is a huge risk. The sooner that she fakes her death the better it’s going to be for everyone involved.” He understood why Vel was allowing it to slide for a little longer than she normally would. Jupiter had the potential to stick around and Micah hoped that she did. Very few of Vel’s handled the change well and he knew it bothered her. “I’m sorry but you need to have her get that **** handled. The sooner the better.”
Velveteen - Her head bobbed thoughtfully as he spoke. It was exactly as she has expected and she knew he was right. “I know. I just….It’s not indefinitely. Just a little time for her to work it out in her head and get it straight. As far as I know she has only spoken with them on the phone. I just….” Her brow furrowed and her lips rolled together into a line before she pursed them. “I just think that too we have to be a bit more careful now. More murders or people going missing unexpectedly, with all these people hanging round and the world watchin’ the city is not any better for us either. Just a ...little while for her to work it out, Babe. That’s all.”
She leaned forward and brought her knees up so that her arms could rest across the apex and looked out over the water. Maybe she should have just killed her or just left. So what if the cops got her description? They already had her on file for **** she would rather not be there for thanks to her sister. Maybe it was time to sell the morgue. Not that she spent as much time there now but that would be the first place the authorities would look for her. It was too high profile. She blinked, realising that her thoughts were heading way off the beaten track and miles away from the subject at hand when a sound drew attention to across the water, a little upstream from where they were. “What was that?” She asked as she squinted against the darkness in a bid to gain a visual on whatever it was she thought she heard.

<Micah> “I get it. You know that I do. But the sooner she does this the better. Her family will grieve and in time they’ll move on. And so will she.” He didn’t see what the big deal was but then he didn’t view things in the same way that most people did. It was relatively cut and dry to him but others would probably view the situation with their emotions clouding their judgement. Micah wasn’t like that. “We are always careful Vel, you know that.” He silenced his tongue, not wanting to start an arguement with her over Jupiter. “She needs to do it soon or the decision will be out of her hands.”
His head turned in the direction she was looking in. He listened hard but all he could hear was the quiet strands of music that wrapped around them and the sound of the water hitting the rocks. “I don’t hear anything. Are you sure that it wasn’t just the wind, or the water?” Or maybe he just hadn’t been paying attention and there was someone out there.
Velveteen - She nodded and offered her husband a smile. She did know and she very much appreciated him giving her that amount of time no matter how small. It was obvious though that she was suddenly a little distracted as her head tilted curiously listening for the soft splashing sounds of a moment ago. It happened again and this time she rolled forward onto her feet and crept closer to the water's edge. “I…..think there is someone out there.”
In the darkness she could just make out flashes of pale skin, possibly arms? It was difficult to tell with there being no light but the fire and its radius was limited. As if on cue the clouds parted and allowed the light of the moon to light up the area with its silvery luminescence. Velveteen’s eyes widened and she started toward the figure that seemed to struggling. The power of waterwalk would allow her to get there faster and remain dry, intent on saving a life and giving little thought to breaching the masquerade. It never occurred to her in the panic to ask what someone was doing out this far, nor did she realise that there was no cry for help, just the splashing of the water. “Over there! Look!” She exclaimed, pointing across the river before heading towards the struggling figure.
<Micah> He squinted a bit but he knew it wouldn’t do any good. There was no one there. Was she seeing things? It wouldn’t be the first time that she had. When they had been in Texas she’d been able to see things he couldn’t but she’d always been sensitive to spirits. Was that what was going on with her now? “There is no one out there Vel what are you talking about?” He got to his feet and moved closer to the water’s edge just in case he wasn’t seeing it from the right angle. But no there was no one there.
She started across the water and he went to grab her arm to stop her but she was too fast. “Damnit woman there ain’t no one out there!” Lucky for him he could walk on water too so chasing her wasn’t an issue. He took of after her, muttering under his breath a thousand different insults that surely had his mother spinning in her grave.
Velveteen - “There is. Over there.” She pointed again as her pace picked up. She knew he was right behind her and had no doubt that once they got closer he would see it too. That is how real it was. “Oh my god Micah! Its just a kid.” The tiny flailing arms came out of the water once more and from this close range she could tell it was no adult. Just then they slipped between beneath water silently. Sense of urgency filled the vampire as she ran the rest of the way to where she was certain the child had gone under. Velveteen was not the most maternal person in the world but she did value human life and the ending of one so young was nothing short of a tragedy in her mind.
She pulled up to where the she last seen the small body slip beneath the surface as she searched frantically for any sign of life or limb to grab onto. But there was nothing. The current of the water was strong and would surely be dragging something so small and light away all too quickly. “I’ve lost them.” the panic within easily heard in her voice as she concentrated and allowed the water beneath her feet to swallow her as she too disappeared beneath the black, shiny surface.
<Micah> Walking on water always made him feel like Jesus. This time though he wasn’t walking, he was running. “You’re seeing **** woman! There ain’t no one out there!” She wasn’t listening to him. Whatever it was that she was seeing it was real enough to her to send her flying over the surface of the water on some kind of heroic rescue mission. It was pointless to try and stop her at this point as the idea was already firmly lodged into her mind and there would be no turning back until she saw it through. The killer would be damned though, if she went off on one of her half cocked missions without him. As always, he would have her back.
“Woman just stop it. You’ve not lost-” His words stopped as the water seemed to part beneath her feet, pulling her under after some specter that she was just imagining. “VEL! Jesus CHRIST woman!” He dove in after her, his hand wrapping around her wrist to pull her back to the surface.
Velveteen - It was a little too late when Velveteen realised her husband was talking to her, though yelling might be and more appropriate word. It was too late as the cool, dark waters swallowed her up, and no amount of wanting otherwise was going to change the direction which she was currently headed. Down. Down into the murky depths she sank. Her vision was extremely limited and she was forced to rely on touch as she reached blindly in all directions, hoping to get lucky and grab a limb, clothing, hair...anything that would help save a young life.
Her efforts however were fruitless and as the clouds parted overhead the moon lit the dark waters with an eerie luminescence that offered little aid. There was no one down here but her. Confusion began to cloud her mind. She knew what she saw. They were there. She was sure of it. Blackness enveloped her once more as clouds covered the moon once more.
A moment of hope and panic happened simultaneously as something brushed her wrist and she stiffened. Velveteen had a fear of the living things that lurked beneath the water, as silly as it sounded. Well her husband had been amused upon finding this out at least. The moment however passed quickly as his fingers tightened about her wrist and she was pulled upwards suddenly.
<Micah> He could feel her panic as if it was his own. She apparently had realized that she had been seeing things but it was too late. She was already submerged in the murky depths and if he hadn’t of been able to grab her wrist he wouldn’t have been able to see her. Luck was on his side though and he was able to break the surface, pulling her up with him seconds later. His arm wrapped around her chest, holding her securely against his body as he made for the shore that was several feet away from them.
“You ******* crazy woman?!” He was furious that she had done something so incredibly stupid. She wouldn’t have drowned. After all vampires didn’t need to breathe. But neither of them were familiar with the area they were in. Neither of them knew what was lurking beneath the surface of that water. “You are developing a saving people complex. What if that had been a human? You ran over that water without even bothering to check your surroundings. Hello masquerade breach my name is Velveteen.”
The water had grown shallow, allowing him to release the grip he had on her and stand on his feet. “There was no one there. No one. What were you thinking, running off like that??”
Velveteen - She was confused. That was for sure and remained so even as she trudged out of the water. She was soaked through, there was no escaping that but the extra weight of the wet clothing barely bothered her. “That is the point.” She said absently pushing back the wet strands from her face and looking much like a drowned rat. “A drowning vampire wouldn’t be a problem ‘cause they wouldn’t….drown and I doubt a human in a state of panic as they struggled for their life would have taken much notice of where I came from.” She plonked down on the grassy bank and started pulling off her boots to empty them.
“I could have sworn…..They were there….Their arms were all….” She raised her arms and made moved them like wet spaghetti to demonstrate what she saw. “They were going under. I didn’t….think I just did.” Her chin turned upwards to look up at him as he loomed over her. “I swear I saw them. I don’t know how you couldn’t. They were…there. But….now they aren’t.” She lowered her silvery gaze to look in the general direction of the water and the place where she thought she saw someone earlier. This was getting out of control.
<Micah> “They were never there to start with!” He snapped at her and attempted to wring some of the water out of his shirt. It did no good. His clothes were drenched and the only thing that would make him feel better were dry ones that didn’t smell like the bottom of a lake. His temper was flaring and he really didn’t want to get into a fight with her right now. Whatever she had seen had been vivid enough to make her believe that something had been there. Snapping at her wasn’t going to help the situation any.
He opened his mouth to say something else but he never got the chance to do that. Something grabbed him from behind and yanked him backwards, pulling him back into the water before he could even say her name. Whatever it was, it was strong and it was vicious and no matter how hard he fought the thing refused to release him. Micah couldn’t see what had him but he was aware of something wrapped around his neck and no amount of pulling was doing anything. A sharp burning pain exploded across his neck and the murky water in front of him became muddled and his blood spilled everywhere. Whatever this thing was, it had no intention of letting him go.
Velveteen - It was as if the shadows had come to life and were drawn to the once place. Velveteen had figured the clouds had grown the thicker and would have shrugged it off except for the fact that her husband seemed to disappear at exactly the same time. It all happened so fast. One minute he was there and she could tell she was about to get about a talking to and then the next he wasn’t. He was gone completely from view before she could even reach her feet and only a moment later she was running back into the water, the sound of his name being called echoed across the river.
“MICAH!” her hands frantic as her outstretched fingers reached for him but came up empty. Panicked filled her and was reflected in her cries as she called for him over and over though no response came. “No no no...No.” Sterling orbs scanned the waters surface for any sign of….anything but the water remained calm despite the recent disturbance. Had she actually seen something after all? Was it a trap? Without hesitation Velveteen dove beneath the water. He was still there….somewhere/ She could sense him, even if she couldn’t seen him. It took everything in her to suppress the panic so that she could concentrate on locating him but somehow she managed to do just that.
The clouds overhead shifted once more and once again the moon gifted her with the presence of its bright pearly light. Fear filled her immediately as the large shadowy like figure held her husband. It was too big to be another vampire and something about it gave off a sense of foreboding. Velveteen felt as if she was frozen in place. A helpless witness to the events that transpired despite her struggle to move, to scream, to do something. Blood stained the water like ink and without seeing how she knew immediately it belonged to her husband. The dark haired vampire clawed her way to the surface and back to solid ground and immediately summoned her husband to her. Everything seemed to have slowed down and what took only moments felt like forever. Silver orbs were wide and wild as her arms circled about him, catching him before he fell. She had no idea if he was conscious or not or maybe worse.
<Micah> For a few long agonizing second he honestly thought that he wouldn’t be seeing another night. The harder he fought the tighter the grip the creature had on him became. Not fighting simply wasn’t an option for him. It wasn’t who he was. If he was going to die he wasn’t going to take it lying down. Giving up just wasn’t part of who he was underneath it all. The longer that he was held under the more he was starting to believe that he was never going to see his wife’s face again.
Just as he was becoming resigned to his fate, the death grip his body was in was gone, and he was no longer trapped underwater. Micah started coughing, wincing at the pain that ripped through his throat at the action. He was on dry land again, away from the water thanks to his wife who had managed to summon him to safety. What he didn’t know was how long they were safe for. Whatever had grabbed him could quite possibly return to try and finish him off. Thankfully he wasn’t too badly wounded. His throat was torn out and bleeding sluggishly and he was missing a few fingers on his left hand. Nothing critical that wouldn’t heal in a couple of nights.
He could feel his wife’s arms around him and he knew that he couldn’t risk her safety any longer. “Hotel….can’t stay here.” They were too far out, too far away from the safety of the city.
Velveteen - He was right and she was already searching her pockets for her tome, which seemed to be missing. Swearing under her breath she patted herself down again, one hand still holding the wet hem of her husband’s T-shirt. “**** it. I must have lost it when I went under. It’s gone. Do you have yours Babe?” She really didn’t wait for him to answer and started digging around in his pockets for the small book that would take them home the fastest way possible. He had already lost a lot of blood and was still bleeding quite profusely. “Where is it?” Her words hinting at frantic as she failed to find what she sought.
She looked back across the river, not sure that she really wanted to risk crossing it again for fear of whatever that was returning to finish the job. Her brow furrowed momentarily as her thoughts turned to whatever had attacked. She had heard that there were different fae in the area and apparently one of them resided in the lakes and rivers in the wilderness that surrounded Harper Rock. Without another plausible possibility she decided that had to be it. This thought had her looking over her shoulder and into the trees. Only know did she fully realise where they were. “****. Meaner things. Have you got the energy to shift? That will keep us off their radar for a little bit longer.”
<Micah> He shook his head. Speaking was entirely too difficult for him at present. The killer never left the Eyrie without his tome as there was no other way to get into the tree. Why had he decided to leave it laying on the table when he’d left? Because he’d planned on rebinding both his tome and Vel’s to a different place in the tree. It would be rendered useless once he completed the ritual and had planned on simply destroying it. Stupid of him to leave it behind before making sure he had a working one but he’d been so focused on the project he had started for her that he hadn’t thought of anything else.
Again he shook his head. In her panic she had apparently forgotten that he had asked her to summon for him. His mystical energy was completely depleted. He couldn’t do anything power wise - couldn’t use celerity, couldn’t slip into a healing trance to heal his wounds faster; Micah felt quite useless at that point in time. Time was ticking away though and he was unsure how much time they actually had left before that thing made another appearance.
Velveteen - Her mind raced at a what seemed to be a million miles an hour as she searched the options. Leaving him wasn’t one, no matter how short the lengthy of time, her husband would likely not survive another attack like the last and she wouldn’t risk it. She could teleport him away and then attempt to cross the river on her own. She was low on the magickal energies herself but she would be able to do something, just not much. Perhaps she could carry him out. Velveteen had only flown carrying another once before. A female much smaller and lighter than her husband but maybe. As if invoked by that passing thought a pair of large, sleek, raven coloured wings unfolded and she snaked her arm about his middle. “We will be out of here soon.” She uttered almost absently as she dragged him to her and attempted to lift him. Her brow furrowed as nothing happened and she tried again, with the same results. It was like she had absolutely no strength at all.
There was no time to question it. The could be done later. For now they had to get out of here. “Ok. Here is the plan. You need to feed. At least get a little in you for now until you are able to feed probably. Then I will teleport you and you can summon me. Once you have fed I can summon some spirits. Just….stay away from the water.” Silver orbs scanned the area vigilantly as she spoke. “Ok?” She had no doubt that no matter how weak he was he would have no problem overcoming a human.
<Micah> He didn’t like it. In order to summon her after she teleported him he’d have to summon enough spirits in order to have enough of that energy. But there really wasn’t another option for them at this point. Leaving her alone there where it wasn’t safe just didn’t sit well with him. He knew that it wouldn’t be for longer than a few minutes but anything could happen to her during that frame of time. She was lucky that he wasn’t able to really say much or he’d be voicing his protests at her plan, even though there was nothing else they could really do.
Finally he nodded his head, giving her silent permission to summon a human. He hadn’t fed from a human since he’d turned Rion. Fresh human blood was always so much better than the real thing.
Re: The Loch Nesa Monster
--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay--
Velveteen - Velveteen bowed her head and closed her eyes. She was sure she was able to do the two tasks...maybe more if she really pushed it. “Ok Human first. Then I can summon some spirits so you can summon me.” It had been quiet , eerily so in the surrounding wilderness. She didn’t like it, but while it was quiet, nothing was happening. The hand that wasn’t still wrapped tightly into the back of his shirt came up to about waist height as if silently beckoning someone closer, her fingers curled and her hand closed as she concentrated on pulling a random human all the way out here.
It was no surprise that when she opened her eyes and lifted her head that they were no longer alone. She couldn’t help but smile, a malicious yet upward turn of her lips. The pair avoided feeding from people where possible though the idea often gave her such a rush, a sense of strength and power, it was hard not to enjoy the moment, despite the importance of haste. Long, frigid fingers curled about the female’s arm and she dragged her closer. “Here...feed, so we can get out of here.”
<Nesa> The city was so lovely tonight – of course she was just out so that her mother would think she was okay. There was very little she could do to actually make herself feel okay again, in her mind there was no point. She was standing outside of a shop, gazing into the window, when she felt this… pull.
It was like a voice in the back of her head – though that was a normal thing for her. No, after dismissing the soft voice that whispered sweet promises of death, there was something calling to her. And she followed this calling, why shouldn’t she? After all, the call was so… strong – or perhaps she was simply too weak to resist it. She was, after all, a weak soul if one listened to her mother, at least.
When she found herself walking through tall grass, leaving the city behind, she was confused. The city was so pretty, why was she leaving it? And then, there was a hand grasping her wrist, pulling her forward, there was someone – no, no, two someone’s in front of her. She could not make too much of the two out, it was too dark, really. She understood one was a woman – that one had spoken out.
The blonde-haired woman shifted anxiously as she stared at the two strangers. How had she come upon them? She did not understand. Why were they here? What did they want with her? Feed? From her? Were they some sort of strange cult?! Some sort of cannibalistic colony of people? That would explain why they were so far away from civilization.
Then she was dragged closer to the injured male and she found herself too afraid to try to run away – really, if they decided to hurt her, would it not be what she had always desired? Death would be sweet for the woman, whose will had long-since left her.
<Micah> The human was standing right there. Right. There. She was his for the taking but still he hesitated. It had been so long since he’d taken blood straight from the vein that he wasn’t sure he’d be able to stop before he killed her. But she was just a human. Micah had no attachments to her, and he wouldn’t give her another thought once he was finished taking what he needed.
A gnawing sort of hunger demanded to be addressed. He needed the blood, not only to satisfy the hunger but to replace what he had lost. He slowly got to his feet, his eyes lifting to catch his wife’s and he reached out to take hold of the human’s wrist. “I’ll try to save some for you, but I can’t really promise you that.” The pull to feed was at the point where it was impossible to ignore and unable to wait any longer he jerked on the fragile arm, pulling he in against his body.
Long fingers tangled into the blond hair and Micah jerked her head to the side. He gave his wife another glance then dropped his head down to allow his fangs to pierced the fragile skin of the female’s neck. The taste exploded over his tongue and he almost dropped her. As good as it was he managed to only take what he needed from her, keeping it as clean as he possibly could. it wouldn’t do for Vel to get a whiff of it or else the human wouldn’t be walking away. Once he’d taken his fill he sealed the wound and released her.
Velveteen - Her silver gaze narrowed and try as she might to avert her gaze she found it near impossible. Every glance her way was met with an increasing irritation. She knew it had to be done. She tried to keep her **** together but somewhere between deciding this was to happen and watching it, the woman slowly began to unravel. Anger and an unexplainable rage inducing jealousy was burning in the pit of the stomach. She tried to ignore it. It was nothing. He needed to feed, that was all there was to it but still, she couldn’t seem to control the emotions that clawed their way outwards from the darkest depths of her being.
By the time he had finished the dark haired vampire was seething and no sooner her husband stepped back than she stepped forward. “Yeah, no.” She managed to mumble past the thin line of flesh that was her lips, pressed together tightly. This one wasn’t going to see the light of day. Fingers curled about the younger females wrist painfully. The more it hurt the happier Velveteen would be. She brought her free hand up to her mouth and tore open her wrist as she muttered something under her breath. By the time she was done three formless, faceless, entities hovered idly nearby. The spirits she had promised. “You take care of them and I will take care of her.” It was obvious by the tone of her voice that she was not mucking around and that something had pissed her off.
The words had barely left her mouth before she pulled the girl closer roughly and lunged forward. She couldn’t remember the last time she had fed straight from a human - mainly due to the fact that she went into some sort of frenzy before getting that close but also out of choice. In most cases Velveteen felt that human life should be protected. Most cases. This one she wanted deader than dead. She wasn’t gentle as her fangs tore through flesh and muscle and had she not been so bent on being all pissed off she might have actually taken time to savour the moment. Before she knew it the female had been completely exsanguinated and Velveteen smiled as she let the other’s limp body fall carelessly to the ground. “Ready?”
<Nesa> They were going to eat her. That was what they were going to do. It all became clear to the woman when the man jerked her hair and by doing that, jerked her head to one side – exposing her neck. What did she know about mythologies? She was not the usual human – no, while most humans had some idea of vampires from stories and tales, this one did not.
They were cannibals, right?
When he released her, she stumbled backwards, her eyes closing. Why was she here? She did not belong here, not here with these cannibals. Before she really knew what was happening, the female had grabbed her. She felt the pain as her wrist was grabbed, and she gave a quiet yelp.
The pain increased as her wrist was torn into carelessly – the mere searing sensation sent the girl to lose her footing and if not for Velveteen, she would have been on the ground. That same pain enters her body multiple times, and time and time again, until she has seemingly lost consciousness.
She lay there for a few moments, before she is reaching blindly to grab onto something – she could not see, she could not hear, she could not even remember what she was doing, or why she hurt. She just knew something happened, and that this something was hurting her.
Her bloody fingers are soon seeking to grab onto something. Surely they would not let her die? Well, if they were cannibals they would eat her – even her flesh. What sort of cannibals just wanted blood? Her mind was whirring – almost as if it were dying; thinking was a process that no longer existed to the blood-covered blonde. Thinking may not exist, but she could do – and if doing was all she had, she would not stop until her fingers had latched onto a body part or a piece of clothing.
<Micah> His eyes narrowed ever so slightly at his wife. What the **** was she doing? The answer came only seconds later as she allowed enough blood to spill to summon three spirits for him to consume. A spark of anger ignited in his chest at her careless action. The killer doubted that the human had enough blood in her to replace what Vel had just shed to summon those spirits. And they were out in the middle of the ******* wilderness where the fae roamed. At any given second they could very well make another appearance and go for her this time instead.
He bit his tongue though, and chose not to remark on the fact that her fangs were now buried in the girl’s flesh as he stalked towards the spirits to consume them. Of course he didn’t have any fucks to give in regards to the human. She was just a human, a food source and nothing more than that and normally he wouldn’t have cared that Vel had chosen to finish her off. What he didn’t agree with however was her motivation for it. He hadn’t missed the look in her eyes. She was jealous. Over a human of all things when she had absolutely no reason to be. Nothing to be done about it now and in mere hours he’d forget about the human entirely. Little did he know that forgetting her wasn’t meant to be.
“Ready,” came the curt response from him as the body hit the ground. He was standing right beside the body and at first he ignore the light brush against his ankle, figuring that it was just the tall grass. However, the pressure was too firm to be grass and it almost felt like a tug. It couldn’t be the body - the human was dead. Micah heard no heartbeat whatsoever but glanced down and saw bloody fingers stretching to grab onto him. What the ****?? How was that even possible? Kneeling down beside the female he pressed his fingertips against the pulsepoint on the side of her neck. As he suspected there was nothing. But she was moving and he doubted it was just reflexes. “Um Vel? I think we have a problem.”
Velveteen - Velveteen had been trying to decide where to teleport her husband too and had come to the conclusion that back to the other side of the river near the hotel would be best. Without tomes getting into the Eyrie wasn’t going to happen and she was gonna need a new one made anyways. Anywhere else but the hotel was also running the risk of a secrecy violation and so the decision was made.
She was staring out over the wide expanse of water towards the target. With so many trees and the area looking much the same all over it was hard to gauge a visual in her mind's eye and hold it for any length of time. It was taking far greater concentration than she was used to. She was simply waiting on his okay and was more than ready to send him tearing through some hole in space and back to safety. The subtle shift beside her caused her concentration to waiver and she looked down to see what he was referring to. Irritation was evident in her tone. “Now is not the time for problems. Leave her. She is not our problem. If she aint quite dead now she will be soon. Dump her in the water. Let the river take her somewhere away from the hotel. Come on babe. We have to move.”
<Nesa> The man, he touched her neck -- she could feel that. She could not process what he was looking for, nothing really occurred to her. Why was he touching her neck? Was he looking for somewhere else to bite her? Strange cannibals. All they wanted was blood.
She was fairly still -- her fingers did not loosen, however. Especially when the female spoke about dumping her into the river -- she could not swim. She could not swim before these strangers hurt her -- she knew she could not swim now. At least, she thought she could not swim. Thoughts were strange -- not all there.
Thin fingers tighten their hold, and she tried to object -- reason -- something. She did not want to drown. Though… it was no use to try; no sound left her mangled form.
<Micah> The tightening of the fingers on his ankle didn’t go unnoticed. She wasn’t dead. Well, she wasn’t truly dead. Already he could sense the barely formed connection he had with her though he didn’t have a ******* clue as to why that had happened. How it had happened was a mystery, one that he didn’t really have the energy to try and unravel and solve.
A low growl rumbled through his chest. “I think it’s a little too late to say she ain’t my problem.” Because she was his problem now. He’d never turned a newly sired fledgling away before and he sure as **** wasn’t going to do so now.
“You’re going to have to ******* chill Vel.” His attention turned to the blonde female on the ground. His fingertips pressed against the underside of her chin to push her head up so he could get a better look at her. “If you’re so worried about your safety then teleport back to the hotel. I’ll follow with...this one.”
Velveteen - Her silver orbs rolled upwards and she looked towards the slow moving clouds. It was the best way to avoid the glare that surely would have happened otherwise. “Awesome.” She muttered quietly to herself though when he voiced her issues being about her own safety she couldn’t help but respond a little too sharply. “It was you said we had to get out of here only a few moments ago. I am more concerned about your safety. But whatever.”
The sound of her teeth grinding filled the short silence. Her attempt at not saying the million thoughts that suddenly came to mind. Instead the vampire lifted her foot and retrieved the knife that was usually always tucked into the side of her boot and proceeded to stab at her arm a little too aggressively. “Have it your way.” She growled as she summoned even more spirits. “Seems time just became irrelevant. I will feed when I get back. These are….for you to summon her. Don’t move.” Once the last lifeless spirit was summoned she set off back across the river though this time she flew.
As if from nowhere large black feather covered wings spanned outward from each shoulder blade and fanned downward, lifting her lithe frame upwards. It was still an unusual feeling and one of her powers that she still had yet master, often finding it difficult to get any sort of height from ground level. It reminded her of those dreams she used to have of flying where she could only manage to stay airborne for a little while before falling heavily to the ground though now she didn’t fall. For that she was at least grateful. It likely helped that her state of annoyance made her that more determined to succeed. Once both feet were back on the solid ground that surrounded the Andras lair area she reached out with her mind to touch upon that of Micah’s. “Summoning now.” She didn’t wait for a response. His warning was given and without further hesitation she beckoned the man to her side with a single thought.
<Micah> She was right. He had said that. But that was before he found out that the human wasn’t dead. He understood that she was upset, and he probably shouldn’t have made it sound like she was only concerned for herself. In situations such as this Vel’s concern was for him first, then herself. Micah was the same way. Figuring he ought to apologize for being a dick her started to but then snapped his mouth shut as she summoned more spirits. She was angry and rightfully so.
The large black wings that sprouted from her back came as no surprise to him anymore. It was a sight that he had seen and it didn’t catch him off guard to see that she could use them to fly. “Fine. I’ll wait right here for you.” Once she took flight he consumed the spirits and turned to the fledgling.
He had no idea what to say to her. Somehow “Hey I’m sorry that I fed from you and made you a vampire” sounded tacky. Something had to be said though. “Look, you’re going to have to trust me ok? I’m going to disappear in about 5 seconds and when I do, I’ll be summoning you to me. But you have to trust me.” He stressed those last words to her knowing that if she didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to bring her to him and she would be left alone in the wilderness at the mercy of the fae.
There was no time for him to stick around and wait for her to respond. He felt his body being pulled away from her, through time and space to land at Vel’s side seconds after he heard her voice in his mind. Micah spared her a glance, concentrated and attempted to summon the girl. Hopefully, she had listened to him.
<Nesa> Words and voices. Everything was melting together… She was lost – confused. The lady did not like her? That seemed to be what may have caused the bloody little face to fall into a frown, or perhaps a pout. Whatever it was, was gone as soon as the man spoke to her – the lady was gone.
But no! It was short-lived, for soon the man was speaking to her – he was leaving her? She stared up at him, her fingers curling against the ground. She did not want to stay here, not by herself. This place was strange – the ground was hard and itchy.
But alas, the girl trusted the stranger. She did not know why – she did not even remember what was happening. But, she trusted and she listened. She listened well enough that she was summoned without an issue – though this summons did cause confusion, the young woman simply blinked and hid her face against her arms.
It had scared her, being summoned.
