You Sunk My Battleship! - A Tale of Chess [Ripper]

Post by Myk »

--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay—

Ripper: W00t! Ok, back into it!

Ripper: from the right... your left? The pieces are:

Ripper: Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen

Ripper: (on the d column)

Ripper: same thing on the other side, except with a King

Ripper: Rooks move up and down, side to side

Ripper: Bishops move on the diagonal

Ripper: and Knights move L-pattern one, two, one

Myk: Ok. I think I got all that.

Myk: So far

Ripper: Knights are the only piece that can move over other pieces

Ripper: like see here? *moves one of the piece*

Ripper: oh and Pawns

Ripper: think of Pawns like foot soldiers

Myk: You can move any piece to start?

Ripper: they got these big shields in front of them and they're heavy

Ripper: so they only move up one space at a time

Ripper: (except their first move they can move 2)

Ripper: and cuz of the big ******* shield they can't stab in front of them

Ripper: so they poke out a spear on the side

Ripper: Queens move any number of space as far as they like

Ripper: Kings too, but only one square at a time

Ripper: yeah, any one you *can* move

Myk: Why "can"?

Ripper: like you can't move a piece trapped behind another piece

--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay—

Apr 27 6:46 AM
Myk : Oh, I see.
Apr 27 6:46 AM
Ripper: unless it's a knight *reiterates*
Apr 27 6:46 AM
Ripper: cuz he jumps over it with his horse, see?
Apr 27 6:46 AM
Myk : Yes, I understand. *smiles*
Apr 27 6:47 AM
Ripper: don't worry about winning or losing for now. just get a feel for the pieces
Apr 27 6:47 AM
Myk : I'm not worried about the outcome, but how does one "take" pieces? I think that's the technical term...
Apr 27 6:48 AM
Ripper: you replace one over the other
Apr 27 6:48 AM
Ripper: except for the King
Apr 27 6:49 AM
Myk : Why except for him?
Apr 27 6:49 AM
Ripper: the game ends when the king is in 'check' or danger
Apr 27 6:49 AM
Ripper: and has no safe place to jump too
Apr 27 6:49 AM
Ripper: kind of like real life
Apr 27 6:50 AM
Myk : Hmm. I suppose.
Apr 27 6:50 AM
Myk : I moved... don't ask me why I moved my pawn there... I just felt like it.
Apr 27 6:51 AM
Ripper: that's a good start
Apr 27 6:51 AM
Myk : Really?
Apr 27 6:51 AM
Myk : Why? >.>
Apr 27 6:51 AM
Ripper: because it's a start. period.
Apr 27 6:52 AM
Ripper: F3-H4
Apr 27 6:52 AM
Myk : *laughs* Looking on the bright side
Apr 27 6:53 AM
Myk : Why has it gone red?
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Myk : Does that mean my piece is in danger?
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Ripper: why has *what* gone red?
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Ripper: if it's the pawn, then yes
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Myk : The squares
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Myk : Ah. Thought so.
Apr 27 6:54 AM
Ripper: pawns work well in groups backing each other up
Apr 27 6:55 AM
Myk : >.>
Apr 27 6:55 AM
Myk : I just moved him again.
Apr 27 6:55 AM
*Ripper moves a white pawn out into 'danger'

Ripper: so see? that's where they need to be to capture

Myk: Diagonal?

Myk: Or do you mean, I move him forward and I can take the white pawn?

Ripper: for example

Myk: Oh. I see now...

Myk: So they move diagonal only when taking pieces?

Ripper: yeah!

Ripper: :D

Ripper: oh...

Myk: Hooray!

Ripper: AND

Ripper: if you get it all the way to the other side of the board it gets promoted

Myk: Into what?

Ripper: to any piece you want

Ripper: except another king

Myk: Reminds me of checkers...

Ripper: sorta...

Myk: I'm at least fairly decent at that game.

Ripper: pawns are like disgruntled checkers

Ripper: kinda

Myk: You're going to kill my pawn now, aren't you.

Ripper: I'll start with one

Ripper: I used that one because now it free the castle up with some breathing room

Myk: So it can be a good idea to sacrifice some pieces

Ripper: sometimes vital

Ripper: but you don't get any more after you start either

Myk: Don't get anymore pawns you mean?

Ripper: any more pieces

Ripper: can't add more, only subtract

Myk: Ok.

--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay--

Ripper : :there you got a pawn chain, because the two link into each other. f the top man falls the one behind can step in where he was
Apr 27 7:07 AM
Myk Garloh : I see what you mean
Apr 27 7:08 AM
Myk Garloh : And I see you set me up into a trap. If I take that pawn to the right, your white pawn can take mine. Yes?
Apr 27 7:08 AM
Ripper : :or they could stay there in a Mexican stand off
Apr 27 7:08 AM
Myk Garloh : Yes.
Apr 27 7:08 AM
Ripper : :backing up pieces with other pieces is a basic strategy. the trick is knowing when to make the exchange
Apr 27 7:09 AM
Ripper : :hopefully you'll come out at least one better
Apr 27 7:09 AM
Ripper : :but sometimes even trades are acceptable
Apr 27 7:09 AM
Ripper : :depends on your style
Apr 27 7:09 AM
Ripper : :House Rule: no mind-reading >.>
Apr 27 7:09 AM
Myk Garloh : Trades?
Apr 27 7:10 AM
Myk Garloh : I don't believe I can read current thoughts...
Apr 27 7:10 AM
Ripper : :covering the bases...
Apr 27 7:10 AM
Ripper : :trade
Apr 27 7:10 AM
Ripper : :like I capture, you capture, I capture, you capture
Apr 27 7:10 AM
Ripper : bam, bam, bam
Apr 27 7:11 AM
Myk Garloh : Ah.
Apr 27 7:12 AM
Ripper : :suggestion?
Apr 27 7:12 AM
Ripper : :move the kings knight up to protect your front man
Apr 27 7:13 AM
Ripper : :that way you'd come out one piece ahead in an exchange
Apr 27 7:13 AM
Ripper : :see how that works?
Apr 27 7:13 AM
Ripper : :well, that's not a good example...
Apr 27 7:17 AM
Apr 27 7:17 AM
Apr 27 7:17 AM
Myk Garloh : Which knight?
Apr 27 7:18 AM
Ripper : :kings night is the one on the side your king starts at
Apr 27 7:18 AM
Ripper : :queens knight is the other
Apr 27 7:19 AM
Myk Garloh : Oh yeah... right, that makes sense when I pay attention. ^.^"
Apr 27 7:19 AM
Ripper : I meant queens though, I think

--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay—

Myk: I think I see what you mean about reinforcing my pawns with the knight.

Ripper: that one...

Ripper: it doesn't re-enforce so much

Ripper: as threaten my piece

Myk: Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to threaten...

Ripper: it's a decent move

Ripper: threaten just means 'has the potential to capture next turn'

Ripper: it's lingo

Myk: I know, I was just being cute. <.<

Ripper: oh, they're lost on me sometimes

Myk: *considers petting him on the head, but quickly puts his hand down*

Myk: So what now?

Ripper: *moves a piece*

Ripper: well...

Ripper: queen's bishop has a nice clearing on the g column to develop

Ripper: but I would put pieces in first to back him before moving

Ripper: give his a firm base. maybe h-pawn

Ripper: or you could move the night blocking the black bishop from moving far

Ripper: *pawn

Ripper: that's a good one because he has the knight to back up

Ripper: and he threatens 2 pieces at once

Ripper: that's a 'fork' btw

Ripper: *knight + Queen

Myk: Right, gotcha

Myk: I think I did that wrong...

Ripper: this game doesn't count

Ripper: ok, one more special move

Ripper: this one's a little complicated

Ripper: it's the *only* time a king can move two squares

--The following transcript was a live chat roleplay--

Ripper: and you can move two pieces at once
Ripper: if  neither  of them have moved yet
Ripper: it's called castling. see how my king is right now?
Myk Garloh: He hasn't moved yet, has he?
Apr 27 7:38 AM
*Ripper swaps the position on two of his pieces.

Apr 27 7:39 AM
Myk Garloh: The rook and the king moved
Apr 27 7:39 AM
Ripper: right. that's castling
Apr 27 7:39 AM
Ripper: can't castle if you're in Check
Apr 27 7:40 AM
Ripper: and can't castle  through  a threatened square
Apr 27 7:40 AM Apr 27 7:37 AM
Myk Garloh: I see.
Apr 27 7:40 AM
Ripper: ...this is a lot at once. you keeping up?
Apr 27 7:40 AM
Myk Garloh: I think so.
Apr 27 7:40 AM
Ripper: good, good
Apr 27 7:40 AM
Ripper: stop me at any time with questions
Apr 27 7:41 AM
Myk Garloh: Ok.
Apr 27 7:41 AM
Myk Garloh: So what's the good about castling?
Apr 27 7:41 AM
Ripper: well, you can move two pieces at once
Apr 27 7:41 AM
Ripper: and it's a good way to move your king fast
Apr 27 7:42 AM
Ripper: usually out of danger
Apr 27 7:42 AM
Ripper: preferably before danger begins
Apr 27 7:42 AM
Myk Garloh: Good point.
Apr 27 7:42 AM
Ripper: I could have castled to the other side too, if there weren't in the way
Apr 27 7:37 AM
Apr 27 7:43 AM
Myk Garloh: He can move that way too?
Apr 27 7:43 AM
Ripper: king can move any direction
Apr 27 7:43 AM
Ripper: usually only 1 square at a time
Apr 27 7:44 AM
Ripper: enough strategy for now! ready to go a few turns hands-off?
Apr 27 7:44 AM
Myk Garloh: Ok, but, say, if I somehow moved my queen's bishop out of the way, could I do castling?
Apr 27 7:45 AM
Ripper: you could indeed
Apr 27 7:45 AM
Myk Garloh: Right. So I think I understand.

Apr 27 7:45 AM
Myk Garloh: Ok. Let's get me creamed. ^^
Apr 27 7:45 AM
Ripper: there's one more special rule...
Apr 27 7:46 AM
Ripper: but I'll tell you it when you manage to beat me a game  :P
Apr 27 7:46 AM
Myk Garloh: *laughs* Good thing we have eternity
Apr 27 7:47 AM
Ripper: eternity maybe, but not all day
Apr 27 7:47 AM
Ripper: >:)
Apr 27 7:47 AM
Myk Garloh: Sorry...
Apr 27 7:48 AM
Myk Garloh: There. ^^
Apr 27 7:48 AM
Ripper: ^^
Apr 27 7:49 AM
Apr 27 7:49 AM
Apr 27 7:49 AM
Ripper: and stop me with any questions on technique or whatever
Apr 27 7:49 AM
Myk Garloh: You just let me know if I fucked up something royally, ok?
Apr 27 7:49 AM
Ripper: win by losing, grasshopper
Apr 27 7:50 AM
Myk Garloh: I'd rather be "young skywalker", but we don't need to quibble over names.
Apr 27 7:50 AM
Myk Garloh: go
Apr 27 7:51 AM
Ripper: go
Apr 27 7:52 AM
Myk Garloh: go
Apr 27 7:52 AM
Ripper: on you
Apr 27 7:53 AM
Myk Garloh: How do other pieces "take"?
Apr 27 7:54 AM
Ripper: replace the bad piece with your piece
Apr 27 7:54 AM
Myk Garloh: Ah. Ok
Apr 27 7:55 AM
Ripper: pawns are the only ones who do it weird
Apr 27 7:55 AM
Myk Garloh: ^^
Apr 27 7:57 AM
Myk Garloh: go
Apr 27 7:58 AM
Ripper: a critique... <.<
Apr 27 7:58 AM
Ripper: good thing about that move is it reinforced your knight
Apr 27 7:58 AM
Ripper: but it didn't develop the bishop at all
Apr 27 7:58 AM
Ripper: and it blocked your queen off entirely
Apr 27 7:59 AM
Myk Garloh: Is she particularly useful?

Ripper: most powerful piece in the game

Myk Garloh: Figures...

Ripper: most powerful single piece at least

Ripper: but not the most important

Ripper: go

Myk Garloh: King, right?

Ripper: King. *nods*

Myk Garloh: Chess is hard on my brain...

Myk Garloh: go

Ripper: good move.

Myk Garloh: *grins* Why thank you.

Ripper: *moves* now see if you can build up off it

Myk Garloh: >.>

Myk Garloh: go

Ripper: go

Myk Garloh: Oh balls...

Myk Garloh: Poor Knight. I think he's going to get captured soon

Myk Garloh: go

Ripper: a better move might have been to trade the knight for my bishop

Ripper: *lets it slide. moves*

Myk Garloh: Hmm

Myk Garloh: To be honest I forgot the Knight could go that way.

Ripper: let me go over the knight again...I think I glossed

Ripper: L-shape, right?

Myk Garloh: No, you told me well enough, I just...

Ripper: so one-two

Ripper: or two-one

Myk Garloh: I forgot how many ways you can make the L shape. >.<

Ripper: anyways.

Ripper: any ways

Myk: I took your bishop, sorry.

Ripper:: apologize again and I'll slap you

Ripper:: that's the point

Myk: >.>

Myk: No need to get kinky. *smirk*

Ripper:: move

Myk:It's wrong to grow emotionally attached to the pieces, isn't it.

Myk:>.>

Ripper:: you can grow attached to the king

Ripper:: it's hard not to love the queen >.>

Ripper:: but she'll break your heart

Myk: Women for you...

Myk: I took your other bishop, so he wouldn't be lonely. *smirk*

Ripper:: ****! I guess I actually need to start paying attention.

Myk: S...

Myk: Uh, nothing.

Myk: <.<

Ripper:: right now you have a lovely fork

Ripper:: see it?

Myk: between which pieces?

Ripper:: take a moment. you tell me

Myk: ...

Myk: No idea. What do forks look like?

Myk: Don't say forks. >.<

Ripper:: forks are when you threaten more than one piece at a time

Myk: Oh yeah, you mentioned that

Myk: So, the knight acting on the queen and pawn?

Ripper: exactly! and knights are great for that

8:20:49 AM Myk Garloh: or the rook

8:21:47 AM Ripper: what's really great is when you can get a king-queen fork with a knight

8:22:17 AM Myk Garloh: Hmm... That does sound awesome

8:22:29 AM Myk Garloh: Should I be naughty and take the queen or the rook?

8:22:32 AM Myk Garloh: Hmm

8:22:43 AM Ripper: *moves*

8:22:54 AM Myk Garloh: Or not

8:22:57 AM Myk Garloh: *laughs*

8:22:59 AM Ripper: not leaving you that choice, sorry :P

8:24:42 AM Myk Garloh: Ok.

8:24:55 AM Myk Garloh: I probably shouldn't have done that...

Ripper: go. would have gone for the knight-rook trade myself

8:26:13 AM Myk Garloh: I was considering it, but didn't know if the king would just take him either way

8:26:40 AM Ripper: you would lose it, but I'd be down a piece too

8:27:03 AM Ripper: and rooks are generally consdidered stronger than a single knight or bishop

8:27:05 AM Ripper: generally

Myk Garloh: Ok, your turn.

8:29:13 AM Ripper: go

8:30:46 AM Myk Garloh: My king is in danger isnt he?

8:31:22 AM Ripper: not directly...

Ripper: when a player moves a piece into a position that Threatens the king, they need to end their turn by saying 'Check'

8:32:15 AM Ripper: it's like 'check yourself, biatch'

8:32:24 AM Myk Garloh: *smirk*

8:32:54 AM Ripper: the game's *over* when you're in check and can't move into any safe square

8:33:14 AM Ripper: also known as Checkmate

8:33:39 AM Myk Garloh: I have no idea how to protect my king...

8:34:02 AM Ripper: you pick it up

8:34:11 AM Ripper: usually it's by keeping him out of the way though

8:35:32 AM Myk Garloh: Ok, desperate move by me[/quote]
