The sky was a lot less clear than it had been since Noel’s arrival to the city. It was a fortnight to a full month after the night of the embrace… turning, if you will, and every night thus far had been ironically… nice. Had it been some kind of a sign of good times ahead? Even now, a little over two weeks later, the curves of Lelantos’ shadowy form were fresh on the mind. She had walked like she owned the city, the world even. Like she was all too comfortable being the predator that she was, the killer that she was. They hadn’t spoken much before or after… or if they had, Noel couldn’t remember much of what had been said by either of them; what the last words exchanged might’ve been before those slivers of ivory tore through warm flesh, slicing through layers of human in order to raise the beast she found within. It was terrifying, the grips of death, and it was painful, unlike any other kind of pain Noel had ever known. But… it had certainly been a clearer night.
Lel was cold and detached, just the way Noel liked it. She kept out of xyr way and xe kept out of hers. She wasn’t dependent on xym. In some ways, xe was reminded of Emer, who despite his humour and light-hearted jabs, had a much darker, much more isolated side. Emer didn’t know Noel had seen it and Noel didn’t care enough to shatter the younger vampire’s illusions. Emer and Lelantos were nothing like Kaj. Kaj, who was loving in his own way. Kaj, who sometimes Noel thought might kill xym and eat parts of xyr flesh; Kaj tiptoed dangerously close to insanity. It all came from a good place, Noel thought. Xe and Kaj were close. Close.
Xe walked the streets until the bright neon lights that said “MOTEL” greeted xym like it did every night, the flickering “vacancy” sign right below it exposing the dismal state the business was in. Who was xe to judge though? It had been Noel’s decision to stay in a subpar corner of the massive city; it was an idea borne of frugality and of remaining under the radar until maybe Kaj had a better grasp on what he had become. What Noel had turned him into. Guilt, guilt, guilt… He had wanted it, Kaj wanted to join xym in immortality, Kaj never wanted to leave xyr side. Still… this was no way to live life, to live without the sun and to prey on those that did.
The bluish glow from the fluorescent lights of the motel room could be seen from under the crack of the door. Kaj was still awake then. Noel reached into xyr pocket and pulled out a key, unlocking the door. It jammed like it always did and it took some effort before xe managed to turn the knob and open the door.
Noel met Kaj’s gaze. It had gotten to a point in their friendship that they no longer had to speak to communicate. Kaj knew xyr and could read xyr like an open book. Similarly, xe knew just from looking at Kaj's face, what he was thinking and thus, what he had done. Xe looked over the male’s bloodied form and xyr brows rose. And without saying anything else, xe tossed the blood packs xe had bought onto the bed and turned around to walk back out to the hazy streets without another word or glance spared.
