“Princess I am just worried.”
“I have to do this, I can’t take over the company until I have done this.”
Fifteen hours ago the decision had been made, Fifteen hours and twenty minutes ago she had walked out of her father’s penthouse apartment in New York and without a single doubt she had grabbed a cab to Grand Central Station. Amelia Darcey was finally stretching her wings and leaving the nest.
From the moment of her birth she had had everything handed to her, spoiled like the heiress she was – jewels she had aplenty and clothes from all the top designers – but the one thing that she had always wished for was to be a normal girl. Her friends called her silly for desiring a more simplistic style of living and her father would just smile adoringly at her and claim her to be the most humble debutant, no one took her seriously. Over time she had come to accept that people would always view her as Mr Darcey’s daughter and the future mistress of the Darcey empire, every night she would remind herself that this was her path and she had to make her father proud after all she was all he had left now – her brother had run off with a gold digger and left her as the only one able to take on the title and ownership of the business.
Bitterness had slowly eaten away at her as she watched her friends all marrying and having lives of their own, jealousy became her consent consort as she was faced with ‘commoners’ finding their own paths and choosing how their life would be lead. No one seemed to get that she would give up all her wealth and her status if only she could make her own way in the world…
It had become a constant pain in her chest and until only a few hours ago she had believed that it would remain until the day of her death – it wasn’t until receiving a letter from her mother’s sister that she had even hoped to change her path. At first her father had been against it ‘Aunt Kate’ was known to be wild and he didn’t want his sweet girl to be tempted to become like her…but once he saw the longing in his daughters eyes he had been unable to refuse – so now here she was, standing in front of the doors that would lead her to her future.

The hustle and bustle of the station was invigorating, watching all these people as they forged their own destinies was simply addictive. Here in this privet world she was ignored, no one tried to charm their way into her good favour nor did they seek out her advice so as to try and make her seem stupid…no, here in Harper Rock she was simply an unknown face.“Your mother would be so proud.” Her aunt was by her side and speaking but she couldn’t really hear the words as she was far more interested in the new world around her.
“I must go shopping, if I am to be an ordinary girl I must look the part.” A voice full of wonder slipped past her red painted lips and without her consent it gave away just how in awe she was of this place and the people who lived here.
Today would be the first day of her new life and she was determined to do it right, no money from father and no going back when things got tough. From here on out she was simply Amelia a city girl trying to succeed in life.
