Hot Off The Press
06.01.13 | Harper Rock News | Redwood
A lot went into the planning and execution of an exposition, the Harper Rock Tattoo Expo no different. Granted, Kleo wasn't as involved as those artists in and around the city itself, but she'd volunteered to take on a few roles. Her main job was last minute PR in the week leading up to the 3-day event.

Kleo had arrived in Harper Rock four days priors to settle in and scope out the city before getting to work. In that time she'd met the owner of Masterpiece Tattoo, stopped in at the other shop he mentioned having ownership in and soon after, discovered delicious cupcakes at a place called Cupcake Corner. She'd stuck her toes in the water at the docks, gone for drinks at a club called Metronome and had a sinfully rich dessert and tea at Chocolate. She'd not had high expectations of the city, coming in from New Orleans, but found herself thoroughly surprised. A ride on the city transportation was always able to land her somewhere within walking distance of a variety of destinations. On this particular day, she'd chosen to venture to a district named Redwood.

Deciding to kick her advertising into full swing, she'd looked up the local papers. The most popular seemed to be Harper Rock News. It was Saturday, and she'd want the ad out by Sunday. She knew it was a stretch, but it couldn't hurt to try, right? Maybe she should've dressed more persuasively, instead of in the fitted skinny-legged jeans, flats, cut off and sports bra she wore. Oh well, it was too late now, she'd found the place.

It was just as she'd expect the home of a newspaper to look. Clean, minimal, with newspapers for the taking on many of the available flat surfaces. Striding up to the reception desk immediately ahead, she cleared her throat lightly to draw the attention of the receptionist. After a short back and forth and a phone call, Kleo was waiting in the lobby for a Ms. Broussard.

The meeting had gone better than expected! Ms. Broussard, who'd insisted Kleo call her Belle, had been more than accommodating. A full page color ad would be ran the entire week, ending the last day of the expo. The main organizers had given Kleo a budget to operate with. It wasn't much, but plenty for what she wanted to do, and made easier by the fact that she'd made all of the promotional graphics for the event (It'd taken a lot of persuading on her part to convince them, when they had capable artists).

"Mèsi, Belle! I appreciate you doing this on such short notice. I'll be emailing you the advertisement file in color as soon as I set foot in my hotel room!"

Handing over the agreed upon fee, and a hard black and white copy to the woman, Kleo left the office satisfied.

Distribution
06.05.13 | Various Businesses | Harper Rock
With a full page ad running in Harper Rock News, and in increase to the plugs made on television and radio, Kleo was convinced the expo would have a great turnout. In the driver's side of the black compact she'd rented, she'd decided to spend the majority of her day and night personally handing out flyers and leaving stacks for business owners to distribute, or at the very least make available to their visitors.

She'd already hit up all the tattoo shops she could find. The tall man with the shades at Masterpiece Tattoo, who she now knew was called Micah, had been more than willing to help her out and she appreciated it.

Setting her final stack of glossy flyers down in front of the cash register, Kleo called out to the owner of the casual cafe she'd stumbled upon--he'd seemed genuinely interested. "I appreciate your enthusiasm and thanks for your help. Look for me at the expo!"

Giving a last wave, the tall woman left, leaving the brightly designed stock and faint scent of pomegranate and icy florals behind her.
