Killing gangsters will get you known as one of Harper Rocks "Most Wanted" in the rumor areas so if trying for a "good guy" character avoid doing that. Zombies, animals, Fadebeatsts, Demi-Fae, Blood Thieves, Paladin Berzerkers and Hunter Footsoliders and anything in a raid (battle or team) are all safe to kill without raising infamy.

There is a section on alignments on the wiki that will further detail how to gain a "lawful" and "kind" character vs a "criminal" or "cruel" character. Since it is embedded inside another page I'll repost it here for your convenience:
Alignment

The Alignment chart appears on the Character Sheet - it is not influenced by Settings, but by character actions on the grid. It has four directions: Kind - Cruel and Lawful - Criminal. A red x marks where the character's alignment is, and it slides according to character behaviour.

You are the only one who will ever be able to see your character's Alignment. Even characters with Appraisal won't be able to see it.

Alignment modifiers

Kind:
Gift giving
Using powers to help allies
Talking your way out of a fight instead of using violence
Selling an item (via auction) at less or equal of its value price tag (selling an item for $1 increases this further)

Cruel
Killing human NPCs (guards and cops, but not Blood Thieves)
Hunting animals

Lawful
Hitting people with high bounties
Feeding on rats or bunnies instead of humans

Criminal
Stealing
Breaking and Entering
Hacking

The purpose of this feature won't come until later. For now it's purely for fun. Eventually it MIGHT be used to determine your reputation, and would cause random NPCs to approach you, asking for help, such as a criminal if you have a rep as a criminal.
There are a few things missing. Killing Zombies will also move your bar toward Lawful for example but this list is a pretty good guide.

Your choices on "investigations" that appear randomly on the Harper Rock exterior map also factor in though as a pure human your success rate may be fairly low on these they are a great way to gain Exp for humans. You get 100 points for success (same as killing a strong NPC) and 25 points (same as killing a weak NPC for only 1/2 the energy) for failure and they only cost 2.0 Energy as opposed to 4.0 for hacking, fighting, rituals, etc or 8.0 for B&E. If you have a car, a ton of gas and money you can speed level your character fairly easily using the Oracle mentioned earlier in this thread.

Outside of this as a pure human you miss out on reporting Wraith guides for 100 exp a pop and of course the low stats and high amount of exp needed to gain a level will keep your advancement retarded in comparison to pathed humans or vampires.

Actually Blood thieves, Hunters and any other 'human' npc's OUTSIDE of raids WILL get your notoriety up and cops shooting at you.

Notoriety

Just like in the real world, undertaking certain actions will attract police attention. Each action (listed below) that garners notoriety will increase your chances of being recognized by police officers.

Cops have an X in 30 chance of recognizing you, where X is the notoriety points. Notoriety points can go up to 60, so cops may have a 100% chance of recognizing you if you walk by. When you are noticed by a cop, they will attack. Whether or not you are wounded depends on your stats. Notoriety points are reduced by 3 each day.

In the future there may be a possibility for hackers to lower their notoriety, or the notoriety of others.

Actions that increase Notoriety:

Failing a hack
Killing Cops
Killing Gangsters
Killing Guards during breaking and entering
Being spotted feeding in high security areas

Except that they don't. Reread. Blood Thieves and Paladins are -1% to notoriety whereas the cops are positive to notoriety.
