It is a sight unlike anything he's had to watch before; witnessing a person's head being lobbed off in one fell swoop. As it turns out, the average head weighs roughly 5kg (11 pounds) and sounds like a bag of flour as it hits the ground. There's a lot of blood that comes with it; the arterial spray looks powdery as it falls. It snows crimson until the body naturally slumps over and then it flows like a river toward him. Sullivan can't control the look of disgust on his face as he watches every second. He's experienced violence before - he grew up learning how to defend himself from gangbangers and the law alike - but this is different; darker. He's transfixed on the corpse of the dead again vampire until she gives the body a crude booting, then his disgruntled gaze locks on her.

When she offers a hand, he considers it for a moment, which is just enough time for her to whip it back. Sullivan catches her studying her own palm and for a split second he notices shame shadowing her features. He also notices that she's got a pretty face - unconventionally attractive for someone who has such a passion for killing. Maybe it's just as well that he has to pull himself up off the ground. His bones groan as he pushes himself back onto his feet and he pushes his injured arm inside his jacket, pressed to his ribs. It feels like his insides want to be outsides. He staggers a little on his first steps and then his cool confidence returns. All the while he's listening to her explanation; her words pours into his mind like a refreshing fruit punch splashes on a parched tongue. He doesn't agree with every word she says, but her enthusiasm sings in a tune he can dance to.

“Sure. No problem,” he mutters and reaches into his jacket pocket. There is a packet of slimline cigars calling his name. “It's Sullivan,” he adds as he's lighting up; black smoke puffs out of his lips like a dragon's breath. “I'm just here to rob the place.”

Macy bit her lip as she saw he was in pain, was that her fault? Well, she didn't really bring him into this, he did make the choice. But he had come in to help her, he didn't have to, but he had. She had to owe him in some way, she felt guilt for it even if she wasn't sure it was truly her fault. He certainly seemed to not be blaming her, gave his name as well.

[qoute=Sullivan]"I'm just here to rob the place."[/qoute]
That was a little unexpected. Though, it did explain why he was missing. She didn't have any grandiose belief's in paladins like some might. That they had to be all good and holy or any of that. But still, it was a bit of a surprise to find one was a thief. But, he'd helped her in a fight he had no need to participate in. And she still had the idea of his injury on her mind. She quickly tried to shove her hands on her back pockets to rub them off, though, that was very difficult considering these things were only decoration. Stupid industry. She should make some herself she wondered.

"Are you ok?" She asked clearly looking at his arm, "Do we need to get you to a hospital, I just, I mean-" there was a rustling and her eyes instantly shot to the stairs sword moving into preparation. She narrowed them, what was that noise, a grunting sound? A groan? Was that...a bear? She breathed in carefully, in a sense they were easier then vampires but her abilities were not directed towards what were not undead. Still, easier. "Bear, I can try and kill it now, or we can wait and try and leave later." she said very quietly keeping her eyes on the stairs ready for it to come down. Pistols were fine...if you were far enough and had the ammunition before it got to you to rip you to pieces. She focused on the blade, blessing it, taking a moment, she had enough time to prepare it before that thing would come down here, if it did indeed come down here. Though, with as many corpses as there were. Surely it would soon enough.

Sullivan checks her reaction to the truth of why he’s down there and she seems a little surprised. He can see the cogs turning in her mind as she considers how to deal with him. It’s not often you come across someone who’s so open about their crimes, but then again, she was the one lobbing heads off. Does it matter if she has a good reason for it? Does it matter if he has a good reason to be skulking about and stealing from people?

It becomes clear that those questions don’t require an answer. Mason looks him over and asks after his injuries in a way that implies she actually cares and Sullivan is fine with dropping the whole thing. It’s not in his nature to get involved in other people’s dramas - even if tonight’s actions suggest otherwise. Sullivan shrugs his good shoulder and tilts his head to give the indication that he’s fine. He can’t protest quickly enough about going to the hospital. He opens his mouth to a howl a no, but something catches both of them off guard.

There’s activity above them. Heavy footfalls pad slowly across the rotten beams; the wood creeks with every movement and dust falls from the ceiling. Some of it gets into Sullivan’s eyes, falls over his cheeks and nose, as he cranes his neck back. As he’s brushing it off, he can hear snuffling and deep breathing too; like a large beast is looking around for something. Maybe it can smell the blood and is looking for an easy meal; they are basically in the wilderness. Just as Sullivan is thinking the word, Mason suggests that it could be a bear sniffing around above them. She offers a few suggestions about how they can take care of it too and Sullivan doesn’t do well to hide his disapproval; his brows furrow and his lips tighten into a line, but he’s not mad.

Without another word, he steps quietly to retrieve his pistol with his aching arm; it scrapes a rusty tune across the cement floor as he picks it up. His ribs and spine protest to him standing upright again, but he makes the effort to aim for the doorway and fires a shot at the wooden frame. The gunshot cracks into the stagnant air louder than thunder and the bear huffs as it makes for a swift retreat. Sullivan returns his gun - gingerly - to the holster on the inside of his biker jacket and continues to smoke his cigar. The nicotine rush helps with the pain and his shoulders relax a bit - as do his facial features.

“Bears are like overgrown mice,” he explains haughtily. “They scare easy. Loud noises, gun shots, whistles, water pistols - you name it. We’re clear to go up them stairs, but. What were you doing here exactly?”

She narrowed her eyes as he fired off into the room. And to the haughty response she raised an eyebrow, "Maybe black bears, some of the others would rather just kill you if you hit them with something small like that. Why do you think I'm holding the sword and not my gun? Just lucky it wasn't already down here, I'd much rather fight it when it's not yet angry then after it's been shot at." Macy said shaking her head. She wasn't exactly an expert but she'd known enough about bears not to try and shoot one down with a pistol, especially without actually having a good shot for the head.

She rolled he eyes as she put the sword down, but still in hand, "And water pistols? Really? You must have met some wussy bears in the past." it occurred to her she probably would really not like him if they had met in other circumstances. It was one thing to be proud, but talking down to people, especially when you were wrong, that was something that really got on her nerves.

"Whatever, I was hunting. That's why I was here. Vampires are easiest to find at night afterall, and easiest to determine who are the best targets and who aren't. I heard noises and, since I'm not familiar with rituals, figured I should either hightail it or stop it if it was vampires. And, guessed right, it was. Just a few more then would have liked." Her eyes drifted back to him, reminding her that he was in fact stealing earlier. Why? There was hardly anything here to steal, "What were you doing here? You said you were stealing, but, what? There's almost nothing here, 'cept this thing." she added tapping the altar with her sword. Those bodies would vanish in time, that she knew. Well, not all did. There were those occasional ones that just seemed to stick around for some reason.

Sullivan does the very childish thing and rolls his eyes when Mason makes her opinion known about the bear incident. He did take the risk on whether their bear was a grizzly or a black one and decided that it is far more likely to be the latter based on population numbers. There is a chance he’s wrong about that and the bear could be waiting in a nearby bush getting ready to pounce - for whatever reason - but he still considers the odds to be slim enough not to care about them. As it turns out, he’s more concerned about his companion here who looks like she’s about ready to cut him into pieces. The light lancing off the sword is enough to make his skin tighten uncomfortably; Sullivan casually steps backwards and away from her so he’s got some breathing room.

“Yeah, I can see that now,” he mutters cooly and sighs.

It doesn’t really matter what he is there to steal after all this so he’s not in the mood to really appease her curiosity. He’s still concerned about what she might do to him, though, so he does follow her gestures and movements very closely.

“So you were hunting vampires?” he asks; the tone of his voice is as neutral as springwater. “You know that they can’t die? See that,” he says and points at one of the corpses with the end of his cigar. “That’s all ********. A show. They can come back from that. Except then they know who you are and will be coming back for you. To trade tit for tat.”

Sullivan draws in a long breath of his cigar then lets it stream out of his nostrils. He feels like he’s telling a campfire ghost story, which always turn out to be true in the end. It isn’t his style to go around killing people: vampire, werewolf, batman, whatever. At the time, it felt like a kill or be killed situation and - like he said - at least those people could come back again and again after they died.

“And now they’re coming for me too,” he says with a groan before stomping on his burnt out cigar. “Let’s get out of here before reinforcements arrive.”

She noticed him take a step back and had to smile somewhat amused. He didn't answer her question but rather...went on about vampires being unable to die. Sure she knew that she'd killed a few of them by this point, but she knew a few things about it. And considering he had gone to thievery and she went to killing the undead she felt she knew a bit more then he did. Still at least this time he sounded a lot less condescending about it all.

She chuckled as he mentioned getting out of there before reinforcements arrived, "Well these guys at least won't be back for awhile, I know that. Usually takes 'em awhile before they show up again." she mentioned already heading to go up the stairs, the sword still in hand and prepared on the chance that there happened to be a vampire up this way, "Noticed not all the bodies vanish either, like that clawed one, they don't usually vanish. All the others ones seem to in one way or another. And anyway, it's about keeping them down. Figure the more you kill them the harder it will be for them to get any stronger. Keep them down. As for coming back for me, it's only a matter of if they can get to me first or think I'm actually the kind of person they want to come for."

He still hadn't answered her question, Macy didn't turn around but carefully glanced around the corners listening and looking before mentioning, "Still haven't told me what you were looking for you know."

Sullivan isn’t expecting his mood to change as rapidly as it does, but Mason has a strange effect on him. She starts talking about the undead corpses with the kind of expertise that is straight up compelling - even though he’s never been the academic sort. He starts to wonder if it isn’t her looks and her laugh that’s got him bewitched because she really does remind him of the girl he never wants to think about. He can’t even bring himself to say her name - not even in his head. However, the more he thinks about not thinking about her, the more he thinks about her. Sullivan remembers how she used to look at him over the hill of their shared pillow; how impossible it should be for a collection of muscles, nerves, and cells can be so expressive. She used to look at him like he was the only person in the world that mattered instead of what he is.

Mason makes for the exit and Sullivan follows on autopilot because he’s not really thinking about the present. So when she pauses and leers over her shoulder, asking again about why he was here and what he was looting, he stops and blinks. He’s quick-witted enough to think up an answer on the spot, all while denying her a proper answer. This is becoming a game to him.

“No, I didn’t,” Sullivan says with a smirk. “I’m starting to see why you’re vampire repellent, though. You’re observant, intelligent, and don’t let **** go.”

As he talks, Sullivan feels his ribs tighten like a bear trap. He wheezes slightly and loosens his grip on his midsection. It doesn’t help much and all he can really do at this point is wait for his body to heal on its own. There’s no way he’s going to a hospital - not unless she fancies hog-tying and dragging him there at any rate. Sullivan takes a step forward to indicate that he’s ready to leave now, but he’s not about to push his way past Mason on a rickety staircase.

She stared at him in uncertainty and some bit of cynicism, he still completely failed to give her a legitimate answer. It was absurdly obvious he was trying to hide it, or to screw with her, and she was really uncertain if it was fair to continue given he had in fact helped her in a time of vital need. "Thanks, but You could at least just tell me you aren't going to answer you know." she said simply before watching him wheeze and narrowing her eyes.

He got up to start leaving and she went up and out keeping a backwards eye on him, but as they were getting out she spoke again, "We should really look at that, if you're not going to go to a doctor then we should at least try and check it out. Maybe you can heal quickly but it's not gonna help if you drown in your own blood would it?" she added as she turned around and stepped aside waiting for him to get out of the stairs completely.

She held up her hands defensively and tipped her head down, "Not that I'm a doctor or anything I've just heard about that happening with lung injuries, I'd really not like it if you ended up dying after trying to help me."

“I thought it was obvious I wasn't going to tell you,” he chuckles as they ascend the staircase.

His feet barely feel like they are touching the steps; he wills himself to be as light as a feather because he can't risk another injury if the rotten boards crumble under his weight. Sullivan doesn’t think about how much he’s annoying Mason at this moment in time; his eyes are more connected to the wooden steps than the joists are. It’s a surprise to him when the final step disappears behind him and he’s finally on solid ground. Sullivan lets out a relieved sigh and finally gives his company his attention. She looks kind of upset with her head down like that and with the words coming out of her mouth, but he’s not an expert in female emotions - he’s been wrong about reading the signals too many times to count. Sullivan believes that awkward situations call for humour and so he wastes no time giving a light performance of what he assumes her male best friend would do.

“You worry too much,” he says playfully. “I'm fine. And, if I'm not, I’ll go find myself a hole or something to die in and save the undertakers a job. I promise not to haunt you after I die either. How does that sound?”

She shook her head at the mention he obviously wouldn't tell her, "Doesn't hurt to ask." Macy responded. Still, she did really want to know, but there were more pressing matters at hand. She narrows her eyes and frowns as he joked about the injury and grunted but ultimately just gave a slight grin as she turned, "Yeah yeah ok. Just make sure the holes deep enough. Wouldn't want somebody finding a rotten hand would we." she joked, though she was still a bit concerned if he was gonna joke about it she was going to do it too. Macy realized she'd probably do it herself in a similar position.

"Well, hm, now what? I really had no other plans then, well that," she said gesturing down the stairs where the corpses would probably have vanished by now, or at least some of them, "The plan was kind of just to kill some vampires when they think they're the most safe and I've at least partially done that. What do you plan to do?" as she followed her statement with a sort of repeat of her question she glanced up to see how he'd react.
