I fancy it would look like ...

Well, the first thread they're directed to. It'll list the sections and what goes on in them (maybe with screen caps?) and would link to all the pertinent places.

- The OOC Welcome thread
- The Model Claim thread
- the Available sires/childe thread
- the available RPers thread (if that's updated?)
- Mention the clan/family/race boards down the bottom, and where they might go to find their peeps/their random sire.

Maybe a link to the Wiki, then. If they're struggling with character creation, they could have a look at the pages pertaining to their path (if they are a vampire) to see what kind of personality they would have, etc. Something to familiarise them with the Canon so that they feel more comfortable when they do start writing.

And maybe a link to the OOC chats. Sometimes all that reading is daunting, and you just want to ask a real person. And if chats are daunting, too, a link to PM Mora (newbie mod) and/or Lancaster (RP mod).

Great idea! :)

And as far as the original topic?

We are still waiting on ten more signups before we do the gauntlet tourney itself but unless you objected, David?

I see no reason why I couldn't start a sign up thread as planned for the players that want to take place in the roleplay segment of the 'event' and those will all be open.

The signed up players can start writing out practice spars and preparing their characters in their threads. Spectators can join in, where appropriate.

Thoughts?

Curiously, what would that look like, a forum primer?[/quote]

In addition to what Eureka mentioned:

A list of all the Moderators.

An explanation of what this Forum sees as In Character and what this forum sees as Out of Character.

Polite emphasis that there is a Cannon that must be adhered to. (New players are here and I have seen non-cannon things creeping in)

Explanation in regard to what can be posted and what cant. Example: No quoting; no posting chat rp unless its shared. - this can be very frustrating as an old player.. I would imagine it would be very off-putting for a new player if they were blind sided by it.

A link to the Yahoo Chat nicknames of the current players

A link to the "Latest updates" from David , because there are updates there that, are important, that are not anywhere else.

For those really new to forum - how to set up the avatar; signature - along with an explanation that these while used by players are OOC information and should not be taken IC.

We cannot just presume that everyone has a working background of RP. We need to foster the education curve of those newer to roleplay.. making it an easy and hopefully effortless education.

Well that's why we'd link to the wiki, for Canon things.

Simple basic things like no eating and drinking unless allurist (or have the RP Power), can't be awake during the day unless you have the daywalker power (or the RP power). But to list every single Canon item would make this simple starter thread a bit too hefty and overwhelming.

Okay, just a heads up guys, on the Moderator board we have discussion already in place (started a couple weeks ago) about this very topic. So YAY!! We're on the same page.

This was in direct relation to the previous 'help' thread that was woefully out of date and we are in the throws of updating and adding to it.

So please keep the ideas coming, these are exactly what the mods need to pull together a good 'here are the things you need to know' thread, that is concise, easy to understand and has links to the places they 'should' read.

Cheers.

No you misunderstand.

If the new players do not feel the need to read the wiki for whatever reason.. they will start playing without reading it.. and thus.. they do things that go against cannon. So To sure that everyone knows there is a cannon that must be adhered to, and that they need to read the wiki.

Yeah, that will definitely be a part of the "Help Thread/Primer" :)

Yeah, updating the existing thread seems like a better idea than creating yet another page / thread with help or newbie info on it. Sometimes it seems like there's already too many different pages for the newbies to read first.

That said, I don't think a help thread should deal extensively with in game things, but rather, we should direct them to vital wiki articles. Having it deal with forum and roleplay introductions too sounds good.

But, back to the question I asked, should roleplayers be auto redirected straight to the forum upon character creation? We do appeal most to forum roleplayers, after all.

Side note: I don't think the forum feels hostile or unfriendly anymore. People say hi and there's like 20 people replying to say welcome and to offer help. You might have had a bad experience where people told you you'd posted in the wrong area, but I've never personally seen that happen even once.

Yeah, when I started I felt welcome.

And yes, David - I do think roleplayers should be auto re-directed to the forum. Because honestly - click on the majority of the new people who've signed up. It'll give you the date of their creation, but a dash next to the 'last visited' spot. Which means they never even came to the forum. The forum seems a vital part of the game that they're missing out on.
