What the actual...

Post by Zodiac »

Well someone had to get the ball rolling again.
(Somewhere in the American Southwest. Nevada)

For the past 3 days she had 'camped out' as she debated her problem. There was a time getting out of the country was far easier than getting in, but now thanks to all the confusion and chaos around the issue she decided to wait before making an attempt. The normal spots during her time with her tribe had used had changed greatly since she last passed this way. Checkpoints and a flipping wall made sneaking past doubtful. She had no doubts her forged credentials would not cause the issue, but if they insisted on inspecting the contents of her van and the small trailer was quite another matter. She doubted the Border Patrol would understand her collections of powders, specimens, various weapons, poisons, relics, spell books along with a cooler stocked with stolen blood packs among other things. She considered moving eastward to the place she was born to try, but Texas was at the heart of this issue. That's why she approached the idea of crossing from Arizona first, but then fell back into Nevada. She had fun in the casinos along the way, but...

'Ain't this just like America?' she laughed to herself. "The US of A is always good at screwing up a person's plans.' She had no desire to make her new home in America. The political climate made it too volatile to consider oneself 'safe' to any degree.

She had rented time in a secured lot for the moment to keep her vehicle safe. In the daytime she slept safely in the van, then at night she'd slip out and jump the fence. Easy as pie and quite safe from discovery.

This night she sat in a bar watching the televised news while the living did what they normally do when they have consumed too much alcohol. After finally taking the time to master the art of a spray on tan process her skin did not give her away for once. T-shirt, shorts, cowboy boots and a hat. She looked like everyone else. It was actually a novel concept to her for once. As the news droned on, she worked her phone to read various headlines concerning her current problem while she pretended to sip her beer.

"...and in Canada, government officials continue to debate the issue of Harper Rock.." the TV announced. Her head snapped up to the screen, but the noise in the bar increased as someone got the jukebox going and caused some happy drunks to begin singing along. Almost 2 (?) years since she had left the place under the idea the place was about to be nuked (or something equally as bad) and not a word on any source of media she encountered. Now the Canucks were talking about it again? She did a search on her phone for the town and was surprised as references to the place began to pop up.

'What is actually going on?' she wondered. One of the waiters stopped at her table to enquire if she wanted another drink. She smiled, waved them off after giving them a tip. 'I have never been this wrong on anything before,' Every oracle and source of divination she was able to consult said the same thing so she had packed up and left while the leaving was good. She exited the news and consulted her banks where money from her shops would be deposited to and was shocked. She still owned the places despite being closed, but now deposits were being made on a regular basis. She tapped her long nails on the table as she tried to make sense of it all.

'You're all screwing with me again, ain't ya?' she aimed her thoughts to the heavens as she got up and left the establishment. There was only one way to find out the truth, but part of her was quite reluctant. When she left she had become her true self once again. Going wherever she wished, doing what she wanted, seeing things she had always wanted to experience and even if Mexico and her final goal of South America was denied her, there were plenty of places yet to see and explore. She had to learn more.

She brought up her email and did a mass message to her friends that had lived in the Rock with her. She imagined she would get a lot of failure to deliver posts but someone still had to be around.

Hey gang! A big howdy from Nevada to you all.
Anyone want to fill me in on what has been going on?
The town is suddenly in the news again for some odd reason.
Details would be helpful.
Having a wonderful time.
(too sunny for most of you sadly)

Blessings

She would stay camped for a day or two to see what kind of responses would come and then decide where and which way to move on. 'I always could go set up shop in Vegas,' she reasoned if worse came to worse. 'Talk about hiding in plain sight.'

Several days later she sat in her van checking her mail. After the unexpected surprise of the town still being in one piece she relocated herself closer to Las Vegas. A secure parking and storage lot kept her rolling warehouse and sleeping spot safe from the curious which allowed her some time to think.

So far, she had received no replies to her mass mailing, so she expanded her next mailing. There were some vamps she was dear friends with, others she tolerated and some she avoided at all costs, so she added in the second and third groups to the next one. As far as she saw things this could be a trick of some sort. Perhaps the Canadian military had managed to eradicate the vampire problem and they were sending out lures now to encourage others to come out of hiding. She could not have been the only one that left before things went poof. Without any solid proof to work from, any idea of making the trek back to Harper Rock was seriously in question.

Greetings once again fellow night people. (and if you didn't get the first message, I do apologize)

So, are we back in business or not? After close to 2 years without a peep and suddenly our town is back in the news?

She sat back and sighed after sending out the brief message. Did she want to go back? A part of her did. After 10 years it had become almost a reassuring place. You knew the rules there and what you could and could not get away with. Even now, with only memories of her past experiences in Vegas it would be a whole new learning curve to contend with. Did she want to deal with something like that again? If she didn't get the information she wanted then she would have no choice. Basically she was trapped in a way. The few points her extended family used to slip back and forth into Mexico in the past was still there but they were filled with people trying to get into America. She highly doubted no one would notice her trying to go South and the farther she would go, the more issues she'd have to contend with. Her plan would have worked but she was eight years too late to put it into motion. She drew aside a peep hole in the black out curtains she had on the windows and saw that it was almost dark. Soon she could grab a snack.
