[Invite] Geborgenheit

August 28, 2020
Bjorn hoisted the rucksack further up his shoulders, rolling his eyes when he felt the water splosh across his backside, soaking the reinforced seat of his tactical trousers. Whatever stretches of cloth he’d managed to keep dry despite splashing around the waterlogged halls of the cathedral for the better part of six hours were now awash, heavy and uncomfortable against his skin. Whilst there were many bodily advantages to being a vampire, even death couldn’t keep chafing at bay. Just as well, he thought to himself with an irritated click of his tongue, eager to hasten his return home. The remaining water trickled out the rucksack and down his back, an unpleasant sensation akin to nails on a chalkboard rather than the sensual touch of a lover.

The tome, rolled tightly into his back pocket for safe keeping, was sturdy, no worse for wear from the surprise inundation; the fae symbols came to life as he incanted them with a practiced tongue. The feeling of being transported from where he stood one moment and landed the next was still as strange as the first time he’d used such an object.

The landing by the ritual table was fairing less well than the tome, each arrival wearing down the stone. Bjorn stepped off the eroded step onto the floating hardwood planks he’d installed throughout the front room; they too were wearing down from impact and the unending slew of detritus he brought back with each homecoming. Soon enough he’d have to reconsider his setup, though renovations seemed pointless; best spend his efforts making the rest of his home feel inviting. It was this very rest of the house that he wished to spare the mess from when he dropped the rucksack and began to strip down to his skivvies. He felt no shame in moving from the front room towards his own—stopping first at the oversized counter spanning the length of the wall from the crafting table to the forge to upend his rucksack.

“Cali?” he called out as he made his way down the hall, expecting her to be in the backroom where the open kitchen and lounging area represented the heart of his home. Without waiting for a response Bjorn veered off into an adjacent hallway, towards his room. He sought to dump his sodden clothes into the washing machine—kept in his bathroom, then take a much-needed shower before settling in for the rest of the morning. It never bode well to leave things to later, all his willpower never enough to keep him awake past dawn.

Less than five minutes later, the telepath was retracing his steps, barefoot and careful to avoid the track of water that’d yet to dry. Bjorn took a left and continued down the main hallway, one hand pulling on the hem of a ratty oversized jumper while the other carelessly rubbed a small towel across his wet curls. Perhaps he’d ask her to cut it, trusting the steadiness of her hand more than he did Connor’s.

“Hey,” he greeted, tilting his head to the side to shake the water out of his ear.

It hadn’t taken long for her to escape the massacre of the penthouse, the tome Bjorn had given her a while ago a comfortable weight in her tote. The second his response had flashed on her cell, she had run her fingers along the leather, disappearing from sight without a second thought. She felt no guilt in her hasty departure, the image of Noah surrounded by blood scoured in her brain. The blood, she could handle. It was the missing limbs that had proved to be too much for her. It was no secret that out of everything in the world to fear, the loss of appendages topped the list. Once she’d landed in the comfort of Bjorm’s home, she closed her eyes, allowing the familiar scent and warmth to welcome her inside, even if he wouldn’t be there for a while yet to do so himself. “Remember, girl, no mess,” she chided herself as she hastened to remove her jacket, the oversized leather carefully folded and placed on the first and nearest table she passed. Her bag followed suit, safely tucked out of the way so no one could get caught on the nylon strap and trip. The only thing she brought with her as she continued her way further inside was her phone and a small black knapsack, which she tucked in the pocket of her jeans for safekeeping.

It was interesting, really, to find herself navigating the halls of his home so easily now. In the beginning, she’d been so nervous, she nearly refused to move one step out of line without knowing it was okay. Now, she drummed her fingers along each surface she passed, as if to leave some memory of her touch within the building’s walls. Maybe, years from now, there would be a story to tell, and her fingerprints would be the key. Or maybe, just maybe, you've been watching too many romance movies lately, and you're warping your brain. An amused smile graced her features at the thought as she headed for the familiarity of the backroom, shoes deposited on the floor near the chair she'd decided to claim for herself.

Maybe she'd put on one of those movies to pass the time until he came home.

Without much of a thought, she snagged one of her favorite mugs from the counter and hopped up onto the seat, her phone balancing on her thigh as she began to scroll through countless titles. Lost as she was in her search, she hadn’t realized how much time had passed until she heard her name break the silence, causing her to jump and nearly tumble from her perch. It took her only a millisecond to place the voice, and she tried to ignore the warmth that flooded her knowing he was home. The sound of water stalled her response, but she knew it wouldn't have mattered. He knew she was there, and he knew where to find her when he was ready.

Placing her still empty mug to the side, she locked her phone and smoothed her fingers through her hair, her eyes tracking his movements as he finally made his way to her, a warm smile softening her features.

“Hey yourself, handsome. Have a nice hunt -- and shower, I guess?”

Bjorn rubbed at his ears with the towel before pulling it across the nape of his neck to catch the water trickling from his wet hair. He preferred the feel of damp cotton against his skin than that of his overgrown strands. It became clear to him right then and there that he would follow through with his request: that she help cutting and styling it. If not tonight then the next, or the one after that. Sometime soon. Comfort and practicality were his primary reasons for seeking a change, its length near unmanageable these days; the second, distant as it was in his esteem, was to defer to Caligrace’s preference, for there was only one person he sought to impress as of late: her. A man besotted would allow himself to be moulded in whatever image she found best suited him.

“Productive and overdue, respectively,” he responded, gracelessly plopping down onto the second couch that wasn't the sectional: a timeworn chesterfield that had come with the sale and which seemed appropriate in this room. Over the years he’d come to collect a number of eccentric pieces that had since livened up the once sparse and clinical space, initially intended with its minimalist Nordic design. The house had been designed to his specifications, conceptualised as a solution to the problems presented to him as a maturing vampire with his myriad of hobbies, his need for safety. Yet, it was only now that it felt lived in, the mismatch of items that felt intrinsically right in this place that made it felt like home.

It never would have occurred to the telepath that someone else would feel right in his home, and yet Caligrace fit as seamlessly here as did this 18th century British commodity in the overtly Scandinavian setting. Bold, mismatched and yet a necessary counterbalance. He was growing accustomed to her presence and noticed her absence far more than he was willing to admit; he was happy to come home knowing she would be there.

Bjorn rolled his head across the back edge of the couch to glance over at her. He found himself smiling back, a pleasant brand of exhaustion blurring its edges and smoothing out his dimples. His gaze tracked her from head to toe and then back up, taking in her lack of shoes, the mug and her phone.

“Been here long? What you up to?”

“I haven’t been here too long, no,” she lied, though the sheepish and playful smile she cast him as she hopped from her perch told the truth. Of course, this had only come after she finally managed to tear her gaze from him with a small shake of her head. It hadn’t been like her when she first met him to become so easily… enthralled… with the small actions someone would make, but she had come to accept that everything was different with him. There was just something about the way he moved, the way he smiled, the way he -- what was she doing again? Oh, right, he’d asked a question. “I was trying to find something to watch to pass the time, but I couldn’t settle on anything. I think I need some recommendations. I’m tired of reading for now.”

It took her a moment to realize she’d been rambling as she busied her hands, expertly finding the tea he had stashed away and making herself a mug. She’d almost thought to ask him out of habit, but she stopped herself just in time. It was such a mundane thing, but she loved the moments like this, barefoot in his kitchen as her tea steeped and he sprawled out on the couch. As she swirled her teabag around lazily, she glanced back to him, taking him in once more. This time, she scanned him quickly, looking for any signs of wounds, of wariness, of --- anything -- that might signal he had been in any danger or needed assistance, protective as she was.

Pleased to find him in one piece, she curled her small fingers about her mug and lifted it to her lips for a testing sip, hip resting against the counter as she focused on him, while also mulling over the events of the evening, one manicured nail tapping against the edge of the ceramic.

Bjorn turned his face towards the high ceiling and hummed, contemplative. The primary user of the extensive television setup was his thrall; whenever Bjorn watched something he was happy to defer to company or settle for whatever was recommended to him as long as it wasn’t a reality show or 75% audience laughter reel. Given the choice he’d pick music over any film.

“You look on Netflix? Most of the time I just watch whatever Connor’s watching.”

His head lolled to the side as he zeroed in on the gentle but repetitive tap of Caligrace’s nail. Tired eyes tracked the sinuous curve of her body and down the length of her denim-clad legs, both easier to appreciate in full now that she was standing. His brow furrowed at the stains on her jeans. He flitted through the rolodex of possibilities, but instinctively knew what it was.

Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath, turning his face back towards the ceiling as the scent hit his palate. It was blood, though not hers, not in the literal sense, not quite.

Tap tap tap tap tap tap.

“You wanna tell me about what happened?”

It didn’t surprise her when he mentioned his thrall, a quiet chuckle escaping as she continued to steep her tea, watching as the color tainted the steaming water with a small, appreciative smile. I’ll have to check with Connor, then, she thought, not realizing that she hadn’t spoken the words aloud like she had intended. Distracted as she was, her ever active mind was being pulled in a thousand and one different directions, only ceasing to calm in those small moments she allowed herself to steal a glance or two of the telepath as he tried to relax from his hunt.

When his voice broke her from her reverie once more, the tapping ceased, the mug lifted partially to her lips before she paused. With a sigh, the tension slipped from her, and she found herself leaning into the counter, the cup placed on the surface - forgotten. “I’m not sure if I made a mistake or not,” she admitted, teeth sinking into her lower lip. “A few nights ago, a man approached me at Myth. Or, well, it wasn’t me specifically. I guess I was just the one he chose. His name is Noah. He wanted to become a vampire. I tried to talk him out of it, but he seemed adamant, and so I turned him.” At this, she turned her gaze away and swallowed, her hands running through her hair, messing the already tousled curls even more. “He was going to get himself killed either way. I thought maybe this way -- this way, I could at least keep him and his safe.”

The beginning, she knew, wasn’t entirely the issue - yet, it was something he needed to know. He needed to understand why she had done what she did, and why it weighed so heavily on her now. Dropping her hands from her hair, she ran her palms along her face and laughed quietly. “Anyway, that’s who Noah is. What happened tonight… well, he decided to try and rob the leader of the vampire hunters. You know the ones. Ephraim retaliated. They fought in the Grove and he was a second away from dying before he tomed. He’s currently limbless and bleeding out on my penthouse floor,” she muttered, chewing on the edge of her thumbnail.

“I couldn’t stay. I boosted his blood and Every told me to leave.”

Eyes closed, he listened.

It was just as well that Bjorn wasn’t directly stood or sat across from her else Caligrace would have clocked every uncharitable thought that crossed his mind. For a fleeting moment he wished to reach out to Every, to ask for her opinion on the matter, if only to use it to temper the edge of his hard-hearted assessment. He knew better than to kick the allurist when she was down, but he struggled with how to best contain perhaps the most unsympathetic thought of them all: you reap what you sow.

There was more to all of this than the courteously concise account of the facts, and Bjorn clung to that like a lifeline. He hoped that in gleaning more information he might find it in himself to hold back the brunt of his—Well, he wasn’t sure what it was exactly. Exasperation. Disappointment. Anger. Apathy.

“Did he threaten you?” he asked, deadpan.

Whatever she had expected after the words fell from her tongue, his direct question hadn’t been on the list. It caused her to pause, her hands falling to her sides as she focused on him. Is that what he was worried about - if she had been backed into a corner, threatened to do something that they both knew she normally wouldn’t have done? Oh, how much easier it would have been. “No,” she sighed, her fingers curling around her mug. This time, she did lift it all the way to her lips and took a sip, buying herself time as her thoughts continued to spiral, spinning madly out of control as she replayed each event in her mind over and over.

“It would have gone differently if he had, you know that,” she continued after a moment, her gaze falling back to the floor, studying it as if her life depended on it. She hadn’t expected to feel this way when it came to telling him about Noah. The -- ache, the guilt. She wanted to make him understand, to tell him everything she had told herself that night. If she could replay it to him in a way that Every had, would that make a difference? Would he understand - even if, now as she thought back, she wasn’t certain that she did? “He told me he was seeking immortality for his family and himself. I remember thinking that he was a moron, that he was going to lead his family to their death. I told him as much, too. So many innocent lives, Bjorn. Lives I could save. Maybe give them the choice I never had --” Her voice caught then, and she turned from him, placing her mug down with more force than necessary as she groaned, face hidden once more behind her hands.

“I fucked up.”

Bjorn remained seated and opened his eyes to stare at the exposed wooden beams.

It wasn’t Caligrace’s words that he needed to process but his vitriolic reaction to them.

He kept quiet for a while longer than what might be acceptable. It still wasn’t enough time. He needed to talk to Every, to be walked through this mess by someone who knew how; if he tasked himself with getting any further in his current state of mind he’d only cause more damage, and it would be cruel to give voice to the thoughts looping in his head.

Bjorn was tired, ill-disposed to follow through with the only line of inquiry he had at his disposal and stunned by the disappointment he felt. The latter wasn’t something he was willing to examine too closely, and so he dutifully doubled back.

He pushed off the couch long enough to snatch the remote off the coffee table, turning the television on before collapsing back into the pillows with an exhausted groan. He tossed the remote aside, flicking through the Netflix menu with his mind.

“There’s a new season of The Umbrella Academy if you want to watch that. Connor won’t shut up about it. You seen it?”

It shouldn’t have surprised her, the way he changed the subject. It was something she had begun to learn about him - his mind worked in mysterious ways, sometimes. It did, however, but it was more than that - the ache she felt grew, and she wasn’t certain she knew what caused it. With a sigh, she picked her mug back up and took another sip from it, the fingers of her free hand rubbing small circles against her sternum, as if that would ease the hollowness there. Guilt, Caligrace. Worry and guilt. That’s what you feel, she thought as she raised a brow to his question. Whatever it was that she felt, it seemed the conversation was over for now. Not wanting to push him, she instead turned her phone onto silent and sat it back on the counter so it wouldn't disturb them throughout the evening. At least he didn't ask you to leave...

“I haven’t, no."

Taking a seat on the edge of the couch, she made herself into the smallest ball possible, legs tucked beneath her, arms wrapped around her stomach - though she was careful not to spill the contents of her tea everywhere - as she sank into the cushions. “It sounds like it could be interesting, though. Whatever you want to do,” she finally smiled, subdued, but a smile nonetheless, eyes focused on the screen.
