Erin stared at the stranger in the mirror. She had been staring so long she had gone into a trance state. Physically, she was the same Erin she was a few months ago, but Erin had spent enough time staring at her self to know that the person staring back at her was definitely a different Erin. Aside from the obvious, dying and coming back as a creature of the night, there were a few details she had picked up on. Like her hair, which was a deeper shade of red. Her once emerald green eyes had paled and turned a soft jade green. She wasn't entirely sure about her skin, but it was more translucent. That, she attributed to the fact that she had not seen the light of day in quite some time. These were all small details no one else had noticed.
And why would they notice? They were all strangers to her. It had been years since she last saw a familiar face. The years since she left home had been filled with the faces of strangers and until a few months ago she had been comfortable with strangers. But now, for the first time in a very long time, she felt alone. The feeling of loneliness was so foreign to Erin. It had always been easy for her to find herself the center of attention, eating up every ounce of admiration, praise and even snide remarks from those who disliked her callous, unabashed self-centeredness.
Erin had searched for that in this new city of strangers she had been bound to with no luck. How could she demand such attentions from strangers when she was a stranger to her own self? Admittedly, being a vampire had its perks. If she tried, she could charm any victim with no effort. But despite her new power, she found it difficult to do even that. For, though it scared her to admit it even to herself, she had lost her confidence and any essence of who she once was. It was one thing to move from one place to another and adjust, but it was an entirely different thing to adjust to being dead and draining humans for sustenance. She still found herself disgusted by the whole process.
In an effort to gain her sense of self, Erin had decided to study the woman who had turned her for some hint of direction. The woman both fascinated and frightened her and in her old life, Erin would have been drawn to her. The thrill of mystery would have excited her, but unfortunately for Erin, this was not the case. Her lack of confidence left her feeling vulnerable and unsure of how to reach out to her. There were days she was pretty sure the woman wanted nothing to do with her, and Erin really couldn't blame her for that. It was strange how fate chose to bring the two strangers together, though for Harper Rock, it was a pretty common occurrence.
Still, Erin couldn't help but feel as though it had only happened to her. To think of anyone else but her would be a stretch even for new Erin. Many years ago she had desperately wanted to get away and embrace solitude, now she so desperately wanted someone or something to cling to.
Dear Diary, I am an Emo Vampire.
