With all his recent findings Tomas wants to see and learn more about the city he is in so he sets out from the Quarantine Zone and doesn’t think he will be back anytime soon so he makes sure to pass the Militia Captain on his way out. On top of that he found that some of the vampires in the QZ were getting a little punchy as well. One of them tried to get the drop on him the other night although the vampire found out that he wasn’t such an easy target as that. He easily sidestepped the attack and just melted away into the shadows. It wasn’t a vampire he has seen before and no idea of who or why he was attacked but without knowing enough of the city and its factions he decided stealth was best at this point. If needed, reckoning could be made at a later date. It seems people are just starting to get itchy trigger fingers it seems. Hell, for that matter he knows nothing about vampires yet honestly, he doubts if many are as friendly as Alexandrea.

Leaving the QZ with a small payday, he makes a quick detour to the bank and deposits over $10k into his growing bank accounts. As he walks he realizes all the police and especially the soldiers on the street finally make sense, just out of the bank and around the corner he comes upon a small group of undead facing off with some soldiers on either side of the street. Tomas quickly sided with the soldiers and with the added firepower, the undead was downed quickly and he slipped away before the soldiers could stop him. He didn’t want any extra scrutiny. These creatures were some ways away from QZ and they were still having trouble taking them down.

Tomas makes his way to the Wickbridge station and starts to ride around the city. Going from station to station and checking out various rumors he heard and suspect. Listening to different people talking on the train and taking notes on anything interesting he hears.

Tomas checks out various job opportunities to supplement his income but nothing really pans out from it. After dropping several applications around the city he receives a couple of outright denials but most do not even talk to him. Although he did get a day labor gig as security but they didn’t have the business to keep him on it seems, probably all the businesses were hurting with the undead leaving town and he did see buildings starting to be either secured with added metal bars and door gates but also with hired security but looking more like mercenaries. Some places looked like they were getting ready to board up the windows and doors after closing permanently. Although the extra pay would of been nice, it didn’t matter much as he seemed to have good cash flow at the moment and enough to last for some time.

After securing a room up for the week up in Cherrydale, Tomas wants to check out some rumors of things up in that area. Staying up in that area would just be easier to handle and with his limited possessions it was easy enough to move.

Earlier on the the travels, he had overheard a couple of people talking about the sewers and some catacombs under Cherrydale and they were discussing it in enough detail that he was able to have a pretty good idea of how to get there. The detail of the discussion made him think it was real and that he wanted to check it out in person to see what is actually down there. Tomas was finding it very easy to blend in and be overlooked in his jeans and hoodie, which he often kept up and just showing his salt-n-pepper beard which was neatly trimmed. At one point a lady even sat down next to him and was watching videos on her phone, she never bothered to look twice at him.

Once in Cherrydale, he showers and with packs his bag for the night. After a rest during the day, he heads out to find the sewer entrance he heard about.

Finding the entrance, pretty closely resembling how he imagined it from the directions he had heard, he lifted up on the metal door and stepped down onto the ladder while the large metal door closes behind him. He slowly descends down the ladder until he splashes down onto the concrete.

Tomas grins and says “What a wonderful smell I’ve discovered!” and then laughs at himself.

The sewers are dark and disgusting with slime all over the walls and some even on the floor, and the smell is absolutely horrid. Small piles of trash litter the floor here and there and other things he wasn’t about to inspect that closely. Every step he takes echoes down the sewer and the little water on the floor splashes as well and wets his socks and pant legs. This is not going to be a clean and neat run that is for sure. The whole area is dark except for some light streaming through the grates above but surprising he can see very easily.

Tomas follows the wall around while trying to avoid as much trash as possible, since he knows he can’t be quiet here he goes for limiting the noise and for avoiding the trash. He came across an area that has fungus growing so he quickly clips some and stashes it into his pack. Although he has no idea of what it is work, he heard others talking about different things like this is wanted for some ritual or something. I’ll pick stuff up for now and inspect it later. As he walks he find other things like old swords and weapon parts, he tosses it in his pack for the time being although he draws the line at picking up used prophylactics, not in my job description.

Now he did hear that vampires sometimes live off the rats down here, and they are huge that is for sure and they are not scared of us either. They let you walk right up to them and grab’em up. Boy do they stink too, how would anyone ever bite one of them! He had no idea and believe that starvation might be a better idea than biting into these things. The slime just clings to their fur. “Note to self, bring a blood bag with ya” he says.
Back to the business on hand, he rounds another corner in the sewer and in front of him down the sewer is another big door standing slightly above the sewer floor. He hopes this is what he expects, he would love to get out of here now that he has found several wrong passages and his nose finally is over the smell, mostly anyway.

The door to the catacombs opened easily but with a loud creak as well. Tomas steps through the doorway quietly. The stone here is different than the sewers, older and dryer for starters. The air in the catacombs is stale and the smell of death rides on slight breeze going thru the door.

His combat boots makes very little noise on this floor, although not as quiet as he would like it is better than the sewers. He cautiously starts his hunt into the catacombs. Going down passage after passage but making a mental note of his path so he can find his way back out again when he wants to leave. Unfortunately one corridor looks like the next corridor and even the rooms start to look similar. After roaming for a bit he realizes that the catacombs are not that large and the layout forms in his mind.

While hunting around he does find some interesting creatures to say the least. Wild and Masterless vampires are around and attacking all that moves in the area. Never seen anything like them, they don’t even look human anymore with that distant and wild looks in their eyes. More like enraged animals than anything, Tomas wondered if that was what in store for him and his new kind in the future. Tomas found that they were easily killable enough though. Blade and gun were taking things down with ease.

Ancient looking zombies were all over the area but his skills took them down fairly easily but not as easily as the regular zombies he fought in the Flats. He also found another creature, called a mooncalf. No idea what or where that is from but another of the people down here mentioned what they were called. These things were a bit harder though and a lot quicker than they looked. He was able to slip away easily enough when they back him in a corner. While fighting one of them he did notice a guy coming out of a wall, appeared to be fairly injured and was making his way towards the entrance. By the time his battle was over, the guy was gone so he went a checked out the wall to find a secret door!

Inside this door he found another area that they were referring to as the City of the Dead and many people were inside here fighting thru zombie animals that looked to be mainly or at least partially wolves. He could also hear fighting above him so this place must have multiple floors as well. The wolves were definitely the toughest fight he has had in some time but they were killable also. He knew the challenge would only make him stronger so he continued onward between the cats and this city. Between the two he is keeping himself very busy.

Settling himself into the area for the long haul he also starts to take note of the others that are moving around in the area.

Over the next few days Tomas starts to get a rhythm to the new areas he is hunting. He hunts first in the catacombs and then runs the first floor and with an ever rising ‘body’ count. Would it be right to call these things bodies, how many times do they have to be killed until it is something different! Even the smell was beginning to become tolerable with the exception of the strange senses of dread that he would occasionally feel, with all of his senses growing with his new abilities and this feeling he knows to be real. Maybe not right now but something is stirring and he is betting that it will start changing sooner rather than later! This dark place knows it as well!

Yesterday he had been fighting along all day but then some strange eerie feelings came over him and lingered throughout the day. He had trouble concentrating, his reactions were off, and his abilities did not seem to function properly. He was unable to kill anything even in the flats! The feelings of dread were unshakable and he had no idea of what had happened. The feeling lasted most of the day and then vanished as fast as it came on. Rumors have it of curses and what not, but if vampires are real then why couldn’t curses be real, with the exception of him being a vampire he he could think of nothing he has done to make that kind of enemies. But today it is gone and the ‘monsters’ are falling before him so he isn’t going to think much more on it.

Tomas’s next dilemma will be to find a new source of blood up here in Cherrydale. He can’t see running back to the flats daily for a blood bag so he needs to find a new market for them. Although he knew he shouldn’t, he did have to resort to unwary human yesterday. He couldn’t bring himself to biting one of the rats in the sewer, that is just disgusting and the opportunity presented itself too neatly for him to resist. Quick, easy, and while free he knows that he will cause himself problems if he isn’t careful. That is one lesson he does not need repeated.

Every time he goes onto the streets of Harper Rock, he notices more and more undead on them, chasing townsfolk down and getting killed by cops, soldiers, or even shop owners. He doesn’t know if he just missed it when he first came to Harper Rock last month with all the changes he was dealing with or if the undead number are actually growing and the human population seems to be shrinking. Could be he is just now paying more attention to these details but he believes it is actually getting worse around the city. “Time will tell, time will tell.” he mutters to himself as he lets that thought drift off.

All these deliberations make little difference at this point. Tomas always prefers the tangible problems to deal with, things are just neater and easier to make a plan and move forward. Ideas, suspicions, and evens the best laid plans don’t matter once the bullets start flying. Then you find out who you can truly trust in life, who has your back, and who doesn’t.

Tomas’s reflections are interrupted by other people fighting some ancient zombies nearby. Realizing this isn’t the time or place for such things he stands, stretches out his muscles from the position he was sitting in, and heads back to hunting with a bit of renewed energy and vigor.

Continuing on around the catacombs, Tomas keeps coming up the mooncalves and its larger version of greaters. These creatures are stitched together monsters from lore, the looks of them reminds Tomas of the old stories of golems that are patched together from multiple corpses in some kind of haphazard way. The creatures are very disturbing in appearance, and honest they have kind of a weird smell about them, maybe embalming fluid or something similar.

Tomas also starts making some contacts around the city and into some of the seedy parts of the city. While checking out the local bars and clubs he found that people wanted to buy his blood for money however he found that it was also a good way to obtain needed information around the city. He found it very odd but for now it was convenient when needed. He also found a few street thugs and a cop that he could intimidate, bribe, and blackmail to get further information on events around the city. Not that he is into illegal activities however he was trying to find the pulse of the city and learn what is going on where.

He also frequented several of the cafes to find hackers to befriend or find some dirt on for in case or when he needed that kind of services. He had been good with computers at one time but not that good to perform real hacks like he may need in the future. He figured that making these kinds of contacts sooner rather than later would be efficient. These people didn’t usually respond to the same kind of intimidation that other respond to so having already starting to make contact would make it easier in the future.

Tomas also used this time in the cafe to get information on the city, as much of the happenings around him in the city, the current crisis in the city, and very occasionally he would try to get information on his old self and life. With a couple of exceptions on his old life, he was more than willing to let it go but he wasn’t sure when or if the old life would come looking for him and what he would have to do about it. Tonight he found some very disturbing news on the internet and this news is something that he may have to deal with on short notice.

Tomas gets up from the computer after reading this latest information from the Czech Republic and is furious. The newest updates from home do require his immediate attention ,so he heads out the door and directly to the store and buys a burner phone to use. Once out of the store he rips open the package and starts up the phone as the packing drops behind him.

“Your not even gonna pick that up are you? Dropping your trash where ever you want!” says a young couple walking past with their arms around each other with disgust in their tone.

Tomas turned on the young couple, nondescript couple to be sure that were probably on their way home. He turned to face them and drew himself up to his full 6 foot tall and gave them a stare that would shrivel the devil himself. Fire danced in his eyes and the sneer on his lips tells the couple that their death could be at hand….

The couple immediately hurried on without another word and with constant glances back in his direction. They ran into the first open store they found to hide, Tomas could sense their fear he had invoked in this already incensed city. He would not be seeing that couple again tonight that is for sure.

Turning his attention back to the phone, he starts to head back to his flat. Without missing a beat he dials a number and puts the phone to his ear.

“Hello Kimilka, this is Tom…” he says but stops mid name and a pause while he listens to the voice coming from the phone.

“Obviously I’m still alive or how would I be calling you!” he says, “however this story will need to wait until later.” he replies.

“I need a favor and with no questions asked, it’s about Kater….” but is interrupted again.

“Great, then you know what it is about! I need an international flight, papers, temporary cash, and a package when I arrive” he replies “Think you can make that happen ASAP”

“Text me the details at this number when you have it.” he responds.

“Good to hear from you too. See you soon” he says as he hangs up the phone.

Tomas proceeds to his flat and packs a bag as he waits for the details to arrive. Within 30 minutes he receives the flight details and then proceeds to call a taxi and gets dressed. Knowing he can get his clothes once home, he dresses for the long flights ahead of him. Once the taxi arrives, Tomas heads for the international airport and boards his plane. As the plane taxis onto the runway and takes off as he gets a good look at the city below him.

Tomas wonders what the state of the city will be when he returns and what it will look like.
