Spitballing an Idea (not Path related, but grid game related

Post by Mooncalf »

I know I do this fairly often, but when I have an idea I just have to at least ask people what they think, or I can't let it die in my head.

The idea is a new grid game that's sort of a mixture between a 2D Minecraft, Path of the Vampire, and Diablo.

Main feature draws of the game would be:
* An infinite, procedurally generated, post-apocalyptic, monster-filled world.
* A single, massive server, with everyone playing in one world.
* Stake claim to your corner of the world, and build houses, towns, even cities (with friends). Houses can be any shape, with tons of different furniture and equipment crafted and placed in them.
* Your character acts as an NPC while offline, to optional degrees. They'll mine, guard a town, act as a shopkeeper, and tons more. They can even talk to other players with pre-defined dialogue trees, if you wish.
* New species of weird and grotesque monsters are randomly generated when a player explores a new area.
* Discovering new areas / monsters means you get to name them.
* 'Retired; characters can become companion characters to other players, and have extensive backstories that they reveal to other players who meet them.
* Unlimited energy, so you can carry on looting and grinding and mining and building all day long if you wish. XP gain slows down as your character gets tired, but does not stop.
* Players can create unlimited characters on their account, and 'retire' as many as they wish to become NPC citizens in their town, or simply as lone wanderers who give random players quests.
* Factions can team up to create towns and cities and even nations together, electing their own king or lord.
* A world littered with creepy secrets and urban legends.

Thoughts?

I actually think that would be kind of neat, honestly.

That sounds SO badass. Like. I mean basically all of it. I especially love the exploratory nature of it. Also seems like it would be less about PVP and more about a variety of survival skills. Expert pathfinder anyone?

XD

But yeah, that sounds so cool!

Yeah, people probably wouldn't bother PVPing one another unless they were members of a rival nation / city / group in a town that's being attacked. The focus would be on survival, community building, and PVE (alone or as a group). It'd basically be a grid based Walking Dead, with monsters instead of zombies, and NPCs who are all former / offline PCs.

I looooove that concept. I'm a huge fan of survival roleplay (I actually wish the Walking Dead RP would have gained more traction).

Also. Who doesn't love weird and grotesque monsters?

The reason I keep coming back to the idea is because I'd play the crap out of it myself. I love the idea of establishing some pretty looking trading outpost or hub city and setting up each of the NPCs to say interesting things and each have their own jobs they go around doing. And then going out monster / dungeon hunting with a group of PCs, trying to find super rare loot.

Depending on the lore, it could be really badass too. I mean I don't want to get too involved in picking your brain, but if it's post-apocalyptic, are the monsters mutations? Demonic? Ambiguous? You're probably not going to tell me. :|

LOL

Would there be character customization options, like species - or is everyone human?

/focuses on the wrong things.

XD

Unsure, but I was thinking characters could have a wide array of mutation options available to them too. Or maybe you could pick human OR one of the discovered humanoid, intelligent species of monster.

I don't think those are the wrong things, Josh. :)) I was about to ask them myself. I hadn't gotten into TWD game, but I heard it had a really good concept and I know a few people were a bit sad to see it go.

I personally like the idea of survival games, they're usually what I lean towards when it comes to playing on a console past my laptop, actually. The mutations would be neat as hell especially to see how things could develop over time.
