More than Meets the Eye

Post by Garnet (DELETED 9281) »

Many looking in from the outside, with just a cursory glance, would assume that Garnet had led a charmed life, growing up in the lap of luxury, a silver spoon in her mouth. She had been born and raised in a genteel, palatial plantation house just outside of Atlanta Georgia. Her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Monasail were extremely rich farmers that had continued a live off the land, reaping its rewards, and perhaps a tad bit overzealous, in their praising of the Lord Above for the wealth they had drawn from the land. At the tender age of fifteen, Garnet found a new group of friends. They readily accepted her, but she knew deep in her heart, that her parents, in their strict views, would never accept these friends, simply because they met in the woods behind the school each night. Met to practice and learn. Learn the lost art of witchcraft. At first, the strict upbringing, and pious beliefs drummed into her from birth kept her curiosity at bay, and she only occasionally felt her attention drawn to them. The ingrained morals of her parents that all witchcraft was evil and wrong had deep roots, but eventually her youth and curiosity, led to a minor rebellion and Garnet began to spend more and more time with the young practitioners.

A couple years passed and Garnet had delved deep into the Wiccan belief and have joined a coven. This did not stay hidden from her family that soon caught wind of it. Not a big shocker but they were outraged. After being giving the ultimatum of turning away from what she was doing or be outcast from the family, Garnet chose to stick to her Wiccan beliefs favoring a much darker path.. Now being an outcast not only in her family but in the community , Garnet thought it was time for a move. She did some research online in search of some bigger covens where she might fit in more. Reading through some articles, she ran across some conspiracy theories of a place in Canada with strange events and talk of vampires. Garnet laughed and thought to herself, "This would be the perfect place for a weirdo like me."

A month later, Garnet had arrived in Harper's Rock. Before leaving , she had placed a curse on her parents where they would never be happy again. She drove around in her little red convertible looking for a motel to stay in until she could find a place of her own.

Cedric was once more in his car.

Ryde was a locally owned business that Cedric had created to compete with the likes of Uber. Surges were eradicated and a flat rate installed so that no matter when his customers chose to ride with Ryde, they’d pay the same amount. With plenty of advertising and word of mouth, Ryde had become popular -- more popular than Cedric could have accounted for, to the point that he did not have enough drivers. Which meant that Cedric himself had to get in the car and, for a night, take passengers.

The Aston Martin was a hit with the passengers, who never knew what they were going to get when they hailed for a Ryde. They felt like they were stepping straight into a Bond movie, which amused Cedric. And, truth be told, he rather liked showing off his car.

Passengers had just been dropped off at one of the city’s many nightclubs and Cedric was once against cruising, driving up and down the streets waiting for the next hail. It was getting later and it was a weekend night -- with each passing minute, the more people got drunk. It was an issue when driving through the busy section of town -- especially when drunk people jumped out in front of moving traffic. In front of Cedric a car swerved to avoid running into one such pedestrian. The car swerved into oncoming traffic rather than away from it, and was slammed into by a pick-up truck. Both cars careened into cars parked on the side of the road and Cedric slammed on his breaks. The accident caused other cars to swerve, to crash, and the entire street was blocked. The Aston Martin was spared any scratches but Cedric was immediately out of his car, stepping out onto the street to assess the damage.

As she continued to cruise down the road in search for a place to stay, she saw cars swerving ahead of her. Garnet pulls off quickly as she sees someone crossing the street and a car moving towards them. The girl starts muttering an incantation "hash men sa ka ra ki" As she raises her hand causing the sliding out of control car to veer away from the pedestrian.

Garnet didn't think anyone saw her but she glanced around again before venturing off to see if she could offer any assistance to the injured people in the accident. All the pedestrians were lucky. She saw a few people in their vehicles with gashes on arms and head but nothing serious.

Crowds had gathered with all the chaos that had arouse but once things seemed to be managed by fire and rescue , Garnet started to return to her car

Cedric hadn't missed it. One pedestrian was stuttering, muttering, pointing to a car that had so narrowly missed her. The woman was elderly, or nearing it, and she couldn't stop. Her muttering turned into a story -- somene had run to her aid, someone had asked if she was alright. That car, she said, waving to one of the cars that had instead careened back onto the road. That car was coming straight for me, and then it wasn't! It was like it hit a wall!

Cedric, of course, was curious. He'd been around, he'd heard stories. He knew what vampires were capable of and that kind of telekinesis was something he'd never seen. A car had stopped near his, a woman had exited the vehicle just as he had exited his own. Now she was heading back toward it -- though there was nowhere to go. For all intents and purposes, the road was now blocked. Cars had pulled up behind, so there was no way to back out, and the road ahead was blocked. Cedric intercepted the woman before she could get to her vehicle, his hands pushed into the pockets of his black jacket.

"Did you see what happened?" he asked, pointing to the car and nodding toward the woman who was still telling her story -- now to a different onlooker, who wasn't really listening but was instead fascinated by the potential for carnage in front of him. People, these days -- their fascination generally outweighed their empathy.

Before she could reach her car good, spectators had already started asking questions and were amazed at how a steam rolling vehicle just happened to have missed an elderly lady crossing the street. A man stopped Garnet and questioned her about the events and if she saw anything. She took a deep breath. She already knew where she had come from, that what she did and believed in was frowned upon. The dark haired girl just looked at the man. "I was just arriving into town when I saw all this commotion going on. " She paused for a moment. "Then I saw a vehicle coming towards that elderly lady but it just seemed to miraclously veer away. I'm still in shock that shes still alive.

She stood in front of her car, pulling her keys out of the black purse and started to open the door. "I guess this was just a very lucky day for her and others. " Garnet smiled as she started to sit down in the black leather car seats.

Cedric peered at the woman a little longer before he merely shrugged and turned away, his boot grinding against the asphalt, hands shoved into his pockets as he surveyed the scene in front of them. Cars were backed up behind them – far down the line there was honking from those who could not see that there had been an accident. Anger manifested in many ways. They weren’t going to be going anywhere any time soon, not until the authorities arrived and someone directed the traffic.

Up ahead, there was shouting. The cars that had collided, though it seemed passengers were miraculously unscathed, were old. Something was wrong. Cedric could smell the gasoline – and then he saw what they were shouting about. One of the cars had veered into a power pole and the wires overhead were sparking, the buzzing sound the power box made was malicious and merciless. There was a boom as the power box overloaded, a shower of sparks drifting to the ground.

And then there were screams as fire burst to life, heat exploding upward and racing toward the cars. That one single boom resulted in a couple more, one of the cars torn to shreds as the fire found something flammable within. A gas bottle, maybe? It didn’t matter. Instinctively, Cedric threw up his arms to protect himself but, regardless of his vampiric speed, he was too late. Curiosity had got the better of him, and now he had a piece of burnt red metal sliced and lodged into his throat. He couldn’t swallow or speak without feeling his muscles shift and contract around the offending, foreign article. He coughed.

Black, shadow-like blood billowed from the wound. It dispersed like so much black smoke as soon as it hit the air. He coughed, wanting only to curse, and stumbled backward.

Well, he though. That escalated quickly.

Before Garnet could pull away from the scene, it wasn't nearly over. What happened next, it was a good thing she was in her car and partly away from the scene. She saw the man who briefly spoke to her about the earlier events heading back in the direction of the crowd then, BOOM , a loud explosion.

She saw the metal fly into the mans neck and she just knew it should have decapitated him but it didn't. Getting out to aid him , she ran over to him. His blood wasn't normal and seemed to kinda vanish. Garnet had come to this town for the rumors of strange events and now she was seeing it with her own eyes. "Sir are you alright."

The dark-haired woman was suddenly back and, while Cedric's fingers sought the edges of the metal shard still stuck in his throat his eyes lifted, and he laughed. The laughter didn't help his situation none. Was he alright? If he were human, he would be near-dead. One could not see the volume of blood that he was losing, but were he losing it in a traditional manner it would be spurting and furling over his fingers. It would be stained and pooling in his clothes. Within minutes he would be on the ground, having lost too much to survive.

But, he was not human. He was vampire. The blood loss was significant and he would need to replenish to feel himself again, but it wasn't fatal. A lot more than a shard of metal stuck in a neck was required to kill a vampire. Vampires were like cockroaches in that regard. Having found the offending piece of shrapnel, Cedric's fingers curled around the hard edges and wrenched it free with a squelch. His opposite hand slid over the wound, as if he could keep the shadowed blood from escaping. It would only work a little, and the wound itself might take a good while to heal.

"Fine," he croaked, his voice affected by the deep gash. In front of them, fire leapt and crackled, people shouted and scattered, and Cedric took another couple of steps backward. Fire had the tendency to spread, and he didn't fancy being around should there be another explosion.
