Why do people steal cameras?

Post by Alexandrea »

Esp., rigged ones which can burn charries. 8-X I just don't get it, seriously. Can someone tell me why? They are crap loot if it's about needing cash.

I swear I have to go around at least twice a week to replace the one in the 8d Mall.

Not pissed & not going to judge. Just have a huge case of WTF~ness. /:)

I stopped putting them in. Happened to Enver all the time. many times weekly. Not worth my time to craft due to low xp and it's wte. Sorry I don't know why, and this probably isn't helpful, but it might be worthwhile to not put them in ever again or for a while.

I believe it was Bjorn who first tried to take one down from Alex's shop somewhere over a year ago! IC wise I explained it as him already being on the bounty list and so totally not wanting his image taken again, and grappling for the camera. OOC wise I was starting out and had come to understand that all asterisk green items were things you could pick up. Boy did we learn a lesson.

I'm pretty sure Harlow has snatched a few cameras here and there (not from 8th mall though -- it was some factory place?) because Harlow's a ***** (who got what she deserved) and would absolutely take things even if they lost much of their value in the process. She was a hoarder. I didn't factor OOC in, as I was committed to making her who she was, and was open (even sort of looking forward) to her getting in trouble over it.

I cannot speak for anyone else though. Perhaps it's worth reacting to in-character for it to stop, or approaching the players in private? I know that I didn't know better the first time around -- and that the second time around it was intentional for IC reasons. Maybe there are roleplay or teaching opportunities to be had.

Having now taken the crafting route with a handful of characters, I can understand the frustration of having to replace stuff over and over again. I keep forgetting where I put traps and shooting my characters's stats into negatives over it ha ha uugh.

Speaking IC-ly (is that a useable term?) if Zodiac discovers her cams and sensors have been removed, then obviously it was a thief in her shop(s). In her home? Trespassers who should be shot if discovered.
(in the story RP she is from Texas originally)

I always saw them as parts of an actual store myself. Most shops do have camera security to a degree, and I have always RPed the sensor as (example) "...her attention was caught as the door chimes announced someone entering the shop"

I imagine in the beginning it was just a way to cause problems for others. Force them to respend or craft new ones. (lets face it, some of us are jerks) In recent times I have had zero issues with this. Guess having shops in low profile areas helps or no one wants to annoy me anymore. Either answer is fine with me. Perhaps its a phase younger chars/ new players go through?
Some day I'm gonna be happy. I don't know when just now

People, particularly new players, may well pick up cameras because they are green, and picking up green things is good - usually.

In the tutorial hub, picking up green things like swords will give you loot to sell. If you see a wallet, a cellphone, cigarettes etc on the floor, picking them up allows you to earn cash.

When I initially left the hub, for the first few days I wandered around the grid getting to know the place, visiting the sewers, different hunting areas, various public buildings and shops etc. I picked up anything green. Then I picked up a camera... because it was green, and green is good. Ouch, bad idea! Needless to say, I have never picked up another camera.

So that is why I think some people will try to pick up cameras. :)

As for any experienced players trying to loot a camera, well, they are probably just trying to spread a little mischief into the world!
