Speakeasy [David Raker]

Post by Cedric Costello »

It was odd to think that he could call things normal, but normality had begun to sink into Cedric Costello’s bones. When an action is repeated over and over again it becomes a habit. Habits are part and parcel of normality – no matter how good or bad they may be.

Cedric’s ‘habits’ weren’t particularly ‘good’. Although they left him feeling alleviated and satisfied, they weren’t exactly habits that he wanted the world to know about. Given the recent news and the revelation of vampire-kind to humanity, Cedric begun to keep a lower profile than usual. He ventured further in order to find his victims. He never gave his real name. He never went back to a house, always hired a hotel room. These days, he was better off hiring a motel room; somewhere cheap and cheerful, somewhere without security cameras or anyone interested in becoming star witnesses.

As a businessman, however, Cedric was forced to have a public face, too. But like many other man of importance in this world, he could keep his seedy underbelly hidden from the naïve and unsuspecting public. On the surface he was suave and charming, all smiles and welcoming and warmth. He was a veritable Dorian Gray, able to keep his semi-youthful good looks and immortality so long as he didn’t turn around and confront his sins. Cedric had no interest in pandering to guilt. The world was better off without fadebeasts. He was doing it a service by getting rid of his one night stands.

The pianist hadn’t yet ventured out for the night; his attire was black and grey, understated and yet imbued with a particular kind of gravitas. There was no mistaking him as the boss. Less often these days did he spend time at the piano, preferring instead to greet the regulars, to laugh and inquire as to their wellbeing. This was a destination, not just another ‘place’. Cedric was strict about making his bar somewhere people wanted to come back to; somewhere worthy of spreading word.

He stood just inside the door, hands pushed casually into the pockets of his pants as he welcomed a new couple. It was a busy night; the women wore cocktail dresses and the men wore suits. Though no smoking was allowed inside, there was still a haziness to the atmosphere, adding to the theme. A small jazz band had been hired for the night, the music upbeat as the stage in the centre of the room slowly rotated. Cedric led the pair to a table, before ambling back toward the entrance, glancing at his clock. Soon, it would be time to go out and prowl.

Despite his success, Raker was going through an existential crisis. He always had power over his peers. It was an exhilarating sensation. To think it would all end one day. What was worse was not knowing. Could be tomorrow ... could be a few decades. Some find comfort in the fact that all humans seem to have that one thing in common. Death. Raker almost has the opposite reaction. How could a man who manipulated himself into a life full of success and power fall to the same fate as the lowly cockroach. It was insulting. Unlike the famous tyrant Qin Shi Huang who drank mercury trying to escape this fate Raker actually has the chance to live forever.
Vampires - one of pop cultures most feared and revered subject. Featured in movies novels and video games. Their existence meant only survival to Raker. The sudden appearance of these creatures drove Raker to pull all kinds of strings. The problem was sorting out the reality from the fiction. Vampires becoming a part of modern culture is almost the perfect disguise. From wackjobs claiming they saw vampires soaring over the city riding on a carpet to lovesick teens jumping at any boy hoping to take advantage. Ridiculous. Raker was almost ready to give up when one of his colleagues from his college days called him. His friend said that a friend of his works for a man who owns a bar. The owner of said bar supposedly is pale and barely ever eats or drinks. The chance of such a rumor being true, however, was very very slim. At the end of his search though, he was willing to try anything.
Wearing a simple coat with the collar up, Raker hoped to catch the owner at the bar. They say first impressions are the most important. If that's the case Raker could easily see this place becoming his favorite. Upon entering he smiled at the 20s decor and jazz music in the background. Staring at the stage, Raker hardly noticed the man standing at the entrance. After a second Raker looked at the man and plastered on the smile he uses to impress chief executives and the like. "Wonderful place you have here." Wanting to get the pleasantries aside he simply offered his hand. "I am Mr. Raker. Is the owner in right now?" This little hunt of his better bear fruit and soon.

Cedric had only just finished with a low conversation with one of his employees when he was approached. Someone had complained about the cleanliness of the toilets, and Cedric had sent his employee to clean them up as soon as possible. People could be pigs, and it was no one’s favourite job to clean up after them. But it had to be done.

A quick assessment was made of the charming stranger, Cedric’s gaze dipping to the man’s attire and back again. A man’s clothes said a lot about his personality, he thought. Dressed all in black and hiding a boxer’s physique, Cedric himself struck an imposing figure.

”I am the owner. Cedric Costello,” he said, his accent somewhere between French and Dutch. A hand was retrieved from his pocket and about to be offered across the small space between them, when there was a clatter and crash behind them, glass splintering on the hard floor. Cedric turned to see a tipsy woman had knocked her wine glass from the table. Although she tried to slip from her chair to clean up the mess she’d made, in her state Cedric assumed she’d only make more. He held up a hand to keep her in place while he crouched down to pick up some of the larger pieces of broken glass himself. One of the waiters had already scurried off to find the dustpan and mop.

As he stood, while juggling the shards of glass from one hand to the other, his skin was sliced. A scratch barely deep enough for concern, but black blood pooled to the surface regardless, dispersing in the air like mystical, ink-like smoke. He didn’t notice.

”If you want to wait at the bar, I’ll be with you shortly,” Cedric said, nodding to the bar and its numerous spare stools. He had to go find a bin to toss the glass into.

Raker wasn't sure what to think of the owner. Certainly not to be underestimated. Turning his head at the loud crash Raker watched as a bumbling drunkard dropped her glass. From the corners of his eyes Raker watched how the owner would react. His scrutiny paid off tremendously. Who would have thought such a powerful creature of myth and legend would be found in a bar, by cutting himself on a broken glass no less. He contained the excitement at the discovery, however; as Raker nodded politely and sat himself down at the bar. Now the only issue was getting a position of trust. After some research Raker discovered the owner is quite the pianist. From his accent it'd be safe to guess that the owner came from either northern France or possibly Belgium. How to use these to his advantage? The owner already heard his local accent so bluffing about his nationality was out of the question. Perhaps a common interest in music? Raker had no clue as to the owner's preferred music style. Classical judging from the piano? Looking back on his knowledge of classical music Raker found ... nothing. Well he knew some of Beethoven's work but not much to stand toe-to-toe with a musical professional. After a few more seconds of brooding on what to do, he refocused on the bar around him. More specifically what to drink. Something weak seeing as a clear mind would be best when interacting with an apex predator of the night. Water it is then. Tapping on the counter in tune with the atmospheric jazz music he waited for the owner to return. The hunt was far from over it seemed. Raker decided it best not be the prey in this case.

It was only as he walked into the bright lights of the kitchen to dump the glass into the appropriate bin did Cedric realise that he was bleeding. He pressed the small gash to his jacket, not caring for several reasons – the blood was black, the same as his jacket, and it would disappear anyway. His blood would never be found at a crime scene. As strange as it might look, he always considered that a blessing.

For a couple of minutes he stood with his back to the room, pressing the skin of the cut together. Before his eyes the scratch stitched itself back together, the skin smooth as if it had never been broken to begin with. He pushed his fingers through his hair, keeping it slicked back, before he went back out to the bar to find the stranger who’d come looking for him. Probably someone wanting to sell him something, or maybe he was just looking for a job.

Cedric slid onto the stool beside Mr. Raker, facing him, one elbow on the bar and one foot still on the ground. He had the air of someone who was busy – someone who wasn’t about to settle into an hour-long meeting with someone who hadn’t called ahead to book an appointment. He was ready to politely decline whatever it was this man was selling, and get on with his night.

”I don’t have long, Mr. Raker. If you’re trying to sell me something, there’s a very good chance I don’t need it. I’ll give you one chance to change my mind,” he said, voice calm and bereft of irritation; the voice of a man who knew he had charm, and exactly how to use it.

As the owner sat next to him Raker simply turned and smiled coldly.

"It isn't about selling anything. It's more what you can do for me."

Clearly this man was the type who didn't have all the time in the world. So Raker couldn't can't really waste time. A more direct tact was required.

"Speaking of which ... Interesting coloration. Is it too forward of me to ask what blood type you have?" Raker said as his smile curled up devilishly. Like a predator that cornered its prey, he continued, "Where are my manners?! I gave you my name but you haven't given me yours. I seem to be at a disadvantage. Of course if this is a bad time we can take a rain check. I know a lot of people that'd be very interested in this lovely establishment of yours."

As he said this Raker turned to get a full view of the jazz band, looking for the piano he had heard of. Raker grinned as his cold eyes caught it in their cross hairs. "Magnificent piece. Heirloom perhaps? I'm sure your friends and family are overjoyed to have a musician of such talent." Raker needed more information to work with. Mentioning his friends and family even briefly could give him more threads to pull. Such connections can potentially become liabilities.

All throughout history many prominent figures scrambled in their age for a way to cheat death. Maybe to rule their empires or for a lover. Whatever their motivations were they failed horribly. Some even ended up poisoning themselves. Raker, however, was so close he could taste it. Raker would succeed where they failed. He'll rule forever. Et regnabit in aeternum.

Cedric’s head tilted to the side, regarding this man with his cold smile. The way he spoke, it was as if he were leading the way to blackmail. Did he know who he was dealing with? Cedric remained unflappable, feathers smooth and eyes clear. For someone to know that the owner of the Cocoa Bean was a musician, often sitting at the piano on the stage in the centre, was not hard to believe. It wasn’t something Cedric sought to hide. He wondered what this man was getting at.

”I apologise, you must be hard of hearing,” he said, equally as cool as the man sitting opposite him.

”Cedric Costello – as I said at the front door,” he said, nodding to that pedestal with the book with all its reservations sitting inside, the staff now greeting each new customer as they drifted through the door, checking for booking before either directing them to the bar, or taking them to their reserved tables.

”The piano is one of the best but it is not an heirloom. It is one that you might find anywhere else in this city,” he said, glancing over at the piano that had only been purchased a few months back, the same time that he had opened the bar. Even the piano he had back in Brussels was not an heirloom, and if it was he wouldn’t have risked bringing it here. In the middle of a busy public bar.

”Do you have a point, Mr. Raker, and are you going to get to it?” he asked. Though unflappable, an edge had crept into Cedric’s tone – one that said if you **** with me you’ll be out on the street with three missing fingers.

Raker blinked as the realization dawned on him. He made a mistake. The days of sifting though rumors and information has him exhausted. Raker could not allow his stress to put him in a position of weakness here.

Grabbing the bridge of his nose he sighed. "Straight to the point then? I and several others have recently acquired information on the specifics of your ... diet. This information would be very incriminating to say the least. There is a way out of this of course. One which would be not only benefit you but also your business. If your situation ... also applied to me as well then I would not let those incompetents release this information. If that scenario came to pass then I could easily make the problem go away." Raker said this in a hushed tone, unleashed all of his manipulative arsenal.

Raker would ... could not fail here. Raker grinned as if he was sharing a secret with a long time friend. "I don't want to be enemies. We can be partners in crime. Think about it. The heat on you would vanish and you'd gain a very grateful veteran of certain types of business."

As he said that last bit he cracked his ring finger. Raker was bluffing of course; he had no evidence of Cedric's nightly activities. All of it was just to appear in a position of strength. Predators target the weak links. In order for prey to survive they either relied on superior numbers or make themselves seem more powerful than they really are. Survival was key.

He was also slightly vague on what the information actually entailed. Let Mr. Cedric do the thinking. Cedric's own mind will scare him more than anything Raker could say. Suddenly his grin vanished. People looking over at them would say he looked pissed. It really just revealed him for what he was. A sadistic, cunning, cowardly monster. Raker doesn't need fangs or an aversion to sunlight to accomplish that.

"Or we could part ways. Role the dice. Leave what comes up next to the fates. If you believe in such things that is." Worst yet. Raker looked like a man with nothing to lose. He wore an expression that seemed to say "I'll take you down with me if need be."

Blackmail, then.

If Cedric’s expression changed, it wasn’t to let in fear or anxiety, it was only to banish any hint of welcome, or curiosity. Blackmail, in Cedric’s opinion, was never a great way to get what one wanted. Especially not from him. Of course there was nothing he could do in the middle of a crowded restaurant – his own restaurant, to boot – but he did have a few tricks up his sleeve.

”I am not sure where you learned your manners, Mr. Raker, but I should hope that someone along the way taught you that blackmail is an insult,” he said. He gave nothing away. His features smoothed and his shoulders shrugged.

”I am not sure what you are hoping for, I am certain that I have nothing to give you,” he said. Cedric was obviously rather confident in his own movements and the way he covered his tracks. If his tracks were so easy to follow, he would not have a random stranger sitting on his barstool trying to blackmail him – he’d have the cops bashing down his door, attempting to cuff him and lock him up, or better yet burn his house to the ground.

”If I did, Mr. Raker, have something to give you, I would tell you that with every word that passes your lips, your chances are growing smaller and smaller. I do not know what evidence you could possibly have, so I’d have to ask you what that was. You cannot scare a man with rumours,” he said, once again smiling. He’d wait to see if this stranger produced any hard evidence; he’d wait to see what came next. But he was very close to calling the bouncers over to bodily remove this cretin from the bar.

He played his hand a little too soon. Stupid stupid stupid. If Raker makes another mistake here he could possibly end up bleeding out in an alley way somewhere. Or drained. Raker's charming mask vanished for a brief instant. It revealed the desperation of a cornered animal. It disappeared almost as soon as it appeared.

Once again his face was the picture of charm and almost regal grace. There is a silver lining however. Raker was a good gambler. No one got as far ahead as Raker without taking risks. He was betting his life on this one.

"Forgive me I phrased that a bit too aggressively. I am not the one who wishes to persuade you with this information. I am simply offering to make the people who do vanish. I would make a very profitable investment to be sure. Also I must say you really are excellent at purging any leads back to you. But once the fanged cat shredded the bag so to speak several extremely wealthy individuals looked into it. They can afford to hire ... talented ... specialists to look into these things. These people are like the bloodhounds of the underground community. Forgive me for not saying more. It's just you have all the cards right now. I am at your complete mercy. I came here unarmed willing and ready to help you. A sign of good faith."

Damage control. Raker was spinning a web of deceit to save his skin. This Cedric was obviously not reacting well to black mail. Well nobody would react well. Cedric just has all the real power in this exchange. Raker's power came from his resources and artistically spun words. If someone sees through his words he would fail and have to resort to ... murder. Killing a vampire was out of the question obviously. So the only option was more words! Hopefully enough to get him closer to his goal. Then he could use the blackmail excuse and his vampiric powers to eliminate a few rivals ... it'd certainly make his plan more believable. It would also have the added benefit of increasing the stability of Raker's power base.

Raker mentally crosses his fingers.
