The Devil is in the details... (open)

Post by Enzo Dragomir »

Soft blue light flooded over the fog coated grass, lanterns along the drive set a falsely romantic image of the grounds, luring your thoughts to assignations and tales of Byronic hedonism. A roll of smoke melted into the damp air followed by the slightly sweet smell of clove and tobacco. Horses stalled in the yard behind him made quiet noises of life, movement and harsh intakes of breath stalked him no matter where he walked, muffled almost ominous.

Rolling the Sobranie between his fingers, he leaned against a lantern post, classic monster dressed in a handsome skin. A demon lurked beneath the gallant exterior, driven and ever collecting souls... he had more than just horses in his stables. Herds....

The Dragon looked out toward the edge of his property, the dramatic line of forest cutting alongside the drive, light from his buildings touching the dense foliage but not penetrating. He narrowed his gaze, he could feel something looking back at him... something otherworldly and alien... magical... as evil as he was..

Fae

He knew they were out there, the woods and dales were theirs, just as the city was his and his kinds. These lines where the two met... well it meant violence often erupted in great sparks of blood and energy. It was their presence however that he had sought contrarily. His animals were great beasts of power and wealth, and if he could cash in on the added benefit of a bit of fae magic leaking over the thoroughbreds? Well, it was worth the danger to his person. He was not here in the daytime to provoke them in any event.

Stubbing out his cigarette into a bin of sand, meticulous about keeping his lands pristine... the better to lure a bit of forest magic... he turned on his booted heel and walked back into the lavish stable. Row upon row of stalls stood gated and locked, no heads prodded forward at this time of night, though he could hear enough movement that he knew he'd not gone unnoticed. Stopping at the end stall, he looked into the darkness, his vampiric gaze easily making out the stallion inside. Dark Intentions stood stoic, regal, looking him back in the eye... alpha sizing up alpha... and that was fine with Lorenzo. He needed that fire and courage to slaughter the other horses on the track. He needed Ark to propel forward because to do any less than run ahead of the others meant he had lost his crown, lost his rule.

Keeping eye contact as he stepped back, he didn't back down from the mount, merely acknowledged the animal before going back to his business in the warmth of the outbuilding. An office lay unattended at the end of the stables, meant for the manager and veterinarian he would be hiring. He needed one who could work the daylight hours, care for the heavily insured animals that would be entrusted to Dagger Pointe before and after races. Someone who understood the underbelly of races, the gambling bringing out different sorts of monsters, human in nature... gangsters and white collar thugs. The Allurist needed someone that could hold their own and not be manipulated or buckle under invisible threats...

He'd put an add out on the race market sites, and as he booted up his computer he hoped this night would bring a response... he was getting too farmish, he needed to wash nature off of himself and delve back into the filth and beauty of the city. Soon.

The Devil has quotas after all.

Millie had recently completed her residency and passed her exams, officially becoming a certified sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarian. It had been a long process and now she found herself searching for a place to go. The place she had completed her residency was great, but didn’t have any room to take on another employee and there were no openings anywhere close that were looking for what she wanted to do. She was sick of hearing the words “over qualified” and feeling like she’d wasted years. She closed her eyes, breathing in and out and pushing all those negative thoughts out with each breath. She hadn’t wasted anything - she just had to keep looking.

When she opened here eyes again, something grabbed her attention and she clicked on it. Race horses, exactly what she wanted to work with. She read down through it, taking in the good and the bad of it. There would be multiple horses for her to care for and treat. It wasn’t just dealing with the injured, by the sounds of it - but managing the barn as well. The biggest down side was that it was a race track. It wasn’t a barn where the horses were trained and competed against other barns in big races, which was what she really wanted to work with. That seemed to be the only thing wrong with the placement, and it was relatively minor. It would be good experience, though, for when she was able to move on to what she really wanted. Or, maybe she’d really love it? Or, maybe she wouldn’t even get the job. She closed her eyes again, breathing in and out until the negativity left her.

She scrolled down until she found some contact information. There was an e-mail, so she quickly copied it and entered it into her more professional e-mail system.
Dear Mr. Vaugh,

I am interested in the job opening that you have for your stables. I am a licensed veterinarian certified in sports medicine and rehabilitation. I completed my residency learning how to care for various different types of athletic horses, although I focused mostly on race horses.

I have attached my school transcripts and proof of my credentials as well as my CV. I do not live in Harper Rock, though would be willing to look into relocating depending on future conversations. I can be reached here, as well as by phone to arrange an interview or if you have any questions.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Millicent Kaiser DVM, DACVSMR

Millie looked over the email quickly before hitting send and sitting back in her chair. Mr Vaughn would either reply back to her or not. It was now in the hands of fate - she had done her part and now had to wait.

He sat pensively at the desk in the stable office. His horses making small sounds in the night behind him. The room was well appointed, warm and welcoming in an Old English style. Enzo crossed his ankles, his hessian boots a beautiful gleam of riding leather that ended at the knee spread like butter over his legs. He made no other move, his chin resting on his fist as he waited for his manservant's reply back to his inquiry.

Soon enough the email message popped up and the owl that had made its home in the stable rafters soared in amidst a quiet rustle of feathers, splitting his attention for a moment. The raptor had a small mouse in its talons and stared at him questioningly before beginning the task of tearing the flesh off the dead animal. The dragon felt his thirst stirring and tore his gaze away so he could finish his own task, the better to let himself back home to find his solace in the beating heart of a human.

Bertrams reply was short and succinct, as always the man was efficient and well spoken. Never a night went by that Enzo didn't applaud his decision to let his business rivals butler live when the rest of the house had met their tragic ends...

Enough with the fond revelries, it was growing colder, a herald the sun would soon make its zenith... and the stable was so close to the woods, so close to the fae... he needed to be done quickly and far from the magic one's territories.

"All information checks out sir. She is appropriate."

The short message was followed by a doc. folder that would, of course, contain all of the findings. He transferred the attachment to HR and opened up an email to his soon to be Vet and Stable manager.

After sending the request for a meeting, and assuring her that her expenses would be paid for the week long trip for the interview, directing her to Bertram to set up the more mundane things such as hotel, rental car, and air tickets, he shut down the state of the art system. Standing he returned his gaze to the air hunter, watching it eat for another moment before turning and walking to Dark Intentions stall once more. The stallion was magnificent, black with that sheen speaking of neon blue and racing in the night sky... which he would be. Dagger Pointe was a night track, the growing trend in the raceways...

"Ciao Bello."

Lorenzo was more than happy to get back to the city and the myriad things remaining on his plate... it had been a very long month of moons.

She was out gardening when her phone went off. She didn’t like to do it during the day, her skin so easily susceptible to the harmful rays of the sun. She had no plans on getting skin cancer. That stuff was nasty. But she loved to garden, be around flowers and just be out in nature in general. She had an affinity for it, which was helpful considering what she was. She didn’t keep any of those plants out here in the open, these ones were purely for decoration.

Millie ignored the beep at first, not wanting to interrupt her thought process, but once she was done tending to that section she leaned back onto her heals and slipped her gloves off, laying them on her lap as she dug in her pockets for the phone. She looked at the notification and her breath stopped for a moment. She hadn’t been expecting to hear back so soon, or at all really. Everyone wanted someone with more experience post-residency. They said they liked her, but she was young and inexperienced and just thinking of all the things people had said made her want to roll her eyes. Instead, she breathed in, held it for a moment and then breathed out, pushing all those negative thoughts out.

She wasn’t about to reply to an important email like this on her phone, so she ran inside, forgetting her gloves in the grass, and booted up her laptop. It was old, the same one that her Mom had bought her when she made it into the Veterinary program. Luckily, Millie was good with computers and had it still working fine, but she was ready to upgrade to something better. Maybe if this job worked out she’d finally be able to.

They wanted to fly her out for an interview? Paid expenses. Just to see if they wanted her? She read it over a few times, trying to see if there was anything she might be misreading. There wasn’t. She grabbed a pencil and paper and started jotting down all of the questions she had.

  • Fare for two? Ailbhe
  • How long/what days?

She looked at it and realized that was really all she needed to know for now. There were more questions, of course, that she would have with her during the interview itself. She’d have to brainstorm with Ailbhe later, but as he wasn’t in just yet she was going to just make the call and get the ball rolling.

She dialed the number that Mr. Vaughn had given her, and was pleasantly surprised when the guy gave no backlash at all about wanting to have her twin accompany her. He gave her some dates and, after double checking their shared calendar, she confirmed the dates and left him to setting everything up, which he promised he would e-mail her the details within the hour. Very efficient. She marked it on the calendar and then called her twin, grinning from ear to ear.
