Eva, the man smirked as he heard the door open and a familiar scent tickled his senses. Wolfgang set a glass down in front of Lyon and sat down at the poker table with one leg crossed over the other, “two point seven million,” Wolf spoke after some pause, taking in the sight of the woman, the thief, he had turned, or rather, failed to kill.

Too quickly he felt ill at ease, Julianna would be back in less than two hours with the boys, and there was a lot of cleaning to get done before then, including a body to dispose of. The man didn’t have any oral fixations, but he liked to keep his hands busy, and so he took up a playing card to tap it against the green velvet surface of the table and kicked out a chair for his new guest, “trust you to find your own way in,” he smiled again, but the gesture seemed forced.
“I’m only in town for a few days, tidying up some loose ends and evicting those who have outstayed their welcome.”

Wolfgang had a drink of blood and set the glass down before reaching into the inside pocket of his suit jacket, one he had left on the back of his chair, “sit, I have something for you.”

Lyonel was well aware of the way business in the city went. The body left behind cooling in the room over the plastic drop was nothing more than proof that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose now that the last breath had been drawn. It was not a loss to Wolfgang by any means. It was simply the business practice of being hands on. If you are a thief it was well advised to be a damn good one or find a different line of work before getting caught. It was bloody, messy and at times the very end of someone before they really began.

Jon was ahead of the game as far as the future was concerned. His time was up. He reached his final fate and took the hard and costly lesson with him to the grave. Wolfgang West always found what was his and he did not take kindly to those who tried to help themselves to it. Anyone who thought he was afraid of getting his hands dirty obviously had not yet reached the center stage behind a closed door with the Old Man and his proverbial rubber gloves like Bloody Jon just had.

Lyon nodded up at the vampire that made him as he followed in the tracks of the one he respected more than any other for many reasons. The tall killer was made from what the dark, powerful shadow in his lead had generously extended. Some viewed their sires with disdain, resentment or even perhaps some sort of challenge. Not Lyonel West. His feet stopped short of the spot where he planned to get comfortable and sized up the business and property tycoon that gave him his name. He felt the connection pull at him. The very one that would eternally have him watching the vampires back and those of their tight bloodline. Lyonel admired the way Wolf existed on his terms and did things his way. He never let the imposed upon ideals of others govern what he did in private or in business. It worked and he was slowly following in those massive footsteps made by shoes that he knew he would never be able to fill.

Once he had made his way over to where Wolf had traded in his role of business lord to bartender he was about to take a seat when the presence of none other than his wife Eva and Wolfgang West’s blood entered. He refrained from taking a seat and greeted his wife as she could always expect.

“Just in time for catching up.”

The press of his lips was light to hers while he pulled out a seat for her to sit. His eyes returned to the Wolf when his announcement was made with the movement of his hand into his pocket. Lyonel immediately thought back to the family apartment below the Penthouse. The family still was like a traveling circus that the Old Man was constantly trying to keep in check. If they weren’t shooting each other they were often causing trouble that required him to do random invasions of the apartment sending memos of hot lead that they needed settle down. Just like Jesse James. He was unseen but effective. The memory of six weeks time having to pass before the young killer had a groin worth contemplating using came to mind. Thanks to the West patriarch’s dead on aim he learned his place. He smiled a bit.

“You have my attention.” His hand pulled a chair next to Eva and his tall body folded enough to claim it.

As Lyonel took a seat, Wolfgang sat back and studied the pair for a moment, a slow, menacing smile tugging at the left side of his mouth, causing it to jerk skyward once more. They were beautiful, deadly, and utterly loyal; his creation, just as he had been someone else's. It had been a long time since Wolfgang had set eyes on another vampire, the world wasn't stained by their kind outside of Harper Rock, and every time he left something called to him, like a magnetic pull, coaxing him bad into the madness.

There was no clever way of going about this, no easy way to ask, and so, Wolfgang opted to rip their bandaid off and be blunt, "as you both know I'm not here for long," he never was, "but I suppose it's good to see you both," the shadow looked at Eva as if to say yes, even you, "which is why I'd like you to come back to New York with me."

He threw the pair of first class tickets down on the table, along with a couple of passports for a Mr and Mrs Hemlock, both born in California in the mid to late eighties, and both unsurprisingly identical to the couple in front of him, "business is good, I'm making more money than I know how to spend, and I thought I'd hire the two of you to help me do that."

So Wolfgang had more money than he knew what to do with, who didn't in this town? Why then, one might ask, had it been so important to chase up after a few breadcrumbs? The simple fact was, no matter how slight the offence, two, or two hundred million, Wolfgang had a reputation to uphold; Jon had just messed with the wrong man. It had to be his smile, Wolfgang surmised, a smile as kind as his lulled people into a false sense of security, but then... It was always the nice guys one should look out for. It's easy to be a cowboy, dress in leather and wave a gun about, partnered with a few sharp words to get what you want, but the kind of man one must avoid crossing at all costs, often appeared the most harmless, friendly, or just too business to notice. Nothing got by him, nothing ever would.

"You want a house, buy it, a car, boat, plane, circus, be my guest, but the empire is expanding and I need people I can trust to help me oversee it, family." Was it so wrong to offer such a title? Wolfgang had never been the type of sire to suffocate those he had hand picked for this existence, but some believed there was still a difference between blood, and blood. "Noah misses his uncle Lyon," Wolfgnag winked, he wouldn't admit that he too had missed them.

The rest of the blood went down easy and Wolf got to his feet to start with the tidy up, "don't think about it," he stopped in the doorway and tipped his head to one side as he spoke, without looking at the pair directly, "I know you want out of the piss pot as much as I do."

It was a hell of an offer. An offer that did not need to be extended twice. Lyonel glanced to Eva then to the wolf standing strong in a man's flesh and suit that had held up rather well over time. Wolfgang West had the business world down and part of the reason was hidden underneath the questionable smile, the pools of mystery that currently fixed on them equally. He didn't miss a thing and chances were if Lyon was a betting man he would be wise to put it all on the idea that there was far more than simple business hidden behind this offer.

He shrugged his broad shoulders once then dropped them. A brief stretch of his hand upward allowed him to scratch at that unseen itch along his jawline. There was no question what he would be inclined to do. Eva's mind was her own to make up. He could only speak for himself. If the woman he was bound to for all time was not interested in the adventure offered up before them equally then he would be riding a lot of planes back and forth. It was nothing unheard of. Their Old Man rode them like city buses back all the time. His legs pulled in under the chair he was sitting in as he leaned forward. His fingers reached out and took the tickets then he settled back. Mrs. Hemlock was handed her set as he washed his celadon gaze over her beautiful face briefly.

"I am in." Lyon finally set his focus back on their sire. "You know that. Noah will be seeing a lot of us and I look forward to it.”

Lyonel went quiet since it was now up to his wife as to whether or not that she would be seeing as much of her time invested in New York as his would obviously be. Jolie Sweet would be more than capable of handling his current properties and he could juggle the business’ in his own name from where ever he was. People did it all the time between West and East coasts.

There was only one thing that sat on his mind now that the idea of saddling up and riding into the sunset was decided. It means he would be going back home for the first time since he left. One thing he had no plans of entertaining the idea of checking in on the family he left behind. However, he did plan on hitting the city with a whole new passion sharing it with the one beside him and watching her take a bite of the Big Apple in her own special way.

“Just think of all the things you can find hidden in those safes.” He whispered hoping to add a little temptation to the idea of New York and all the possibilities it offered.

One .... Two.... Three.....Four..... that is how many times Eva Wests foot tapped before her mind went to racing in every direction possible. She just stared at the smirking face in front of her. Was he totally oblivious to other people s lives did he think that Everything revolved around his life . When he had left Harper Rock it left a lot of people picking up pieces Her and Lyonel included especially Lyonel. She had watched him burry himself in work like the old man always did now he was quite the mogul . He had started with his Detective agency and branched out into Excavation and lawn services Restaurants and much more. He had made millions and was quite successful he could give Wolfgang West a run for his money any day . There was no denying that the man standing in front of her was the sole reason Lyonel drove himself so .Lyonel was totally Loyal to the man and she was too Though she had a different kind of respect for the Wolf in front of her than her husband did .

Eva West had once been that blob in the chair struggling for her life and left in the gutter to die by that Wolf ... She respected that wolf she knew what that wolf was capable of. Did he even realize the magnitude of what he was asking them to do pull up stakes and move out of the country? Did he even realize how much their lives were rooted in this place ? It wasn't simply because of the Void and their connection to it as vampires She could live without that ... She could live without immortality . They had grown roots as a family it was small and dysfunctional . Sepsis was about and Eva kept a eye on the young woman . Then there were the animals Oh god the Animals how on earth were they going to manage the animals .... They had a working goat farm Poor Chupa would have to stay here without her she couldn't part him from the goats.
and Sheba No one could look after Sheba but them ... How could you ask anyone "Here babysit my 500lb Siberian Tiger?" First time she chewed on one of their shoes they would be out of there . Not to mention Snow the white wolf Lyonel had given her when they were engaged and Amira if that dog did not have a place to run she would find one Eva could imagine her getting loose in New York Eva would have to spend hours tracking her down .

She almost laughed almost . She wondered if he cared about the lives that they had built here or was he being purely selfish in his ambitions to get them to part It only took one glance at Lyonel to know their answer and he confirmed it moments later as he spoke . Eva smiled she guessed anything was possible long as she had him by her side . She looked at her sire and spoke "Well Wolfgang you are 4 tickets shy we need one for a Tiger, Wolf , dog ,and chicken "

I am an island.

Wolfgang was a lot of things, successful men always were. Eva’s problem was trying to define him as any one thing in particular, to slap on a label in order to justify her own shortcomings; selfish, rich, inconsiderate. For people like her it was also important to weigh his accomplishments up against someone else’s, if not her own, just as the unwelcomed appraisals of his sire, and some other weasel fell upon him this day. He threatened them, perhaps even amused them, like a boy deciding whether or not to crush an ant under his thumb only to find out it stings.

Slowly they cut pieces away from him, with their eyes, their unspoken thoughts, and ill-favoured desires. They needed him, but they also wanted him to see and feel that they still believed they were in control of a small piece of their lives that he could never see, touch, or comprehend, that their decisions were their own and therefore would not be swayed by wealth, love, or just cause. How does a blind man know the hurt he has caused when he cannot see the tears? The heart knows what the mind blinds the body to.

The problem with the vampires of Harper Rock is that everyone wants to be judge, jury, and executioner, yet were all too willing to leave the difficult decisions to someone else. It wasn’t the money, the admiration, the loyalty, or hate, because one had to love him to hate him, no; he knew the mind and hearts of men, the limitations society deemed people set for themselves, and saw beyond. Wolfgang had plans, and if that wasn’t cause enough to **** one’s pants, dare not look behind the curtain before the show began.

He wanted to wish her luck getting a tiger out of the city let alone the country, and would like to follow such praise with the offer of a well-known red and white bucket for her bird, but bit his tongue, presented them both with that half-smile of his, nodded, and turned to clean up the mess. Unlike Wolfgang West, Jon was the only thing being cut up, smashed into a box and labelled today.

Several hours later.

“I can handle everything just fine. You don’t have to worry about a thing.” Jolie dropped the planner down on the counter and groaned as she made her way to the trunk size suitcase that was abandoned briefly when her boss turned his back. “I have the salon under control and you rest assured any of the business you can’t handle while you are in New York I will take care of here.”

The sound of Jolie Sweet’s sandals snapping at her bare heels echoed behind her as she looked down into the depths of the case Lyonel took a break from shoving random items into. Leaning over and allowing her hands to go on a search she shook her head at what she was discovering in her hands. She pulled out a straw hat and tried to picture him even wearing it. When she couldn’t see it happening she sent it flying like a frisbee with the snap of her dark wrist.

“What about the office?”

The tall killer called out while gathering the last of the walk-in closet he shared with the dogs. Yes, the dogs. The leash that tangled up around his feet was quickly kicked away and landed in the dark corner. This was really nothing new and by all appearances Lyonel was acting no different than usual. He traveled for business all the time. However, this was involving his absence to be longer than the usual week at most. He never packed before as far as she could remember.

“What about it?”

Jolie kept her tone casual so he didn’t come in and find her unpacking the stuff that his wife would thank her later for pulling out of the suitcase. She felt wool and looked at what prize was in her hands. A set of Elvis socks dangled in the air in front of her. She mouthed the first words that came to mind.

“What the hell?”

“Hey, do you think I can just combine everything into the one suitcase and call it good?”

Lyon spotted his wing tipped shoes and his golf clubs. It was as if one naturally would lead him to find the other. Lifting the shoes up he was not surprised to find the front of the right shoe missing. It looked like a shark attacked it. The fur covered type with a bad case of running wild that never got out of her system.

“I think whatever I didn’t get into the suitcase I can just buy there.” He gave the damaged footwear in his hands a last look over and tossed them to the space where the chew toys were piled up. “I may need to get hooked up with a tailor or something.”

Jolie’s eyes lifted up from the hideous green suit in her arms that he managed to pack first. It appeared to have offspring, a second suit of an equally atrocious color was sharing space in the clear plastic wardrobe bag. Of course he had it at the bottom buried and hidden just where she expected he would try hiding it. She was about to unzip the bag when she heard his voice. His wife hated it and he swore it brought him luck. Enough so that he had routinely moved it around their various properties to keep it out of the so called ‘danger zone’ he fondly referred to as his wife’s presence.

“You need a tailor alright.” She confirmed while rolling the suit up quick and leaned down and started shoving it under the bed. “I will set up a meeting with one as soon as you send me your schedule.”

“What are you doing down there?”

Jolie saw his feet before she heard his voice. Quickly she tugged her earring out of her ear and bounced up wiggling it for proof.

“I found it.” She sighed in relief. “So about your office…” She moved quick to exit the room while fixing the earring to her lobe. He was right behind her just as she expected when she mentioned his office. That was a whole other space he didn’t take well to having torn apart. “Let’s get in there and get what you need. I am sure whatever is left can get stuffed on the top then we can wrap this up. I still need to head over to help Eva with what she needs done.”

Eva West had always found herself in many positions ... the current one was hanging upside down over a display case carefully removing the cut glass and jewels beneath. It took concentration it took skill and it kept her mind from wandering back to the scene that had happened earlier. ...

Eva should have been packing but due to the total efficiency of Lyonels assistant Miss Jolie Sweet Eva found herself with very little to do in this move . The woman was a miracle worker. Huge trunks and all of Eva's extensive wardrobe were being packed Arrangements for all of the animals that Eva had thought was going to be a problem the woman hadn't blinked a eye at crates for Sheba Snow and Amira had been delivered along with the trunks and a Semi truck sat parked at their farm . Everything had been handled it left Eva feeling quite happy and useless .

None of that however is what had the thief trying to get away from her thoughts It was the wailing that kept echoing in her mind the Wailing of her one friend she had made a unlikely sort of friendship. Chupacabra her wraith the spirit of a goat herder. Chupa had been misshapen in his lifetime which had left him ridiculed outcast and treated with disdain most of his life and when a rash of local livestock slaughtering of the goats the simple minded herder loved happened leaving the animals drained of their blood ... Rumor and superstition took effect and he was hunted down and stoned to death ... He trusted no one but Eva and here she was feeling like she had let the poor soul down He did not understand why Missy Eva had to leave .... To be honest Missy Eva had a hard time explaining it to him because she didn't quite understand herself except that Wolfgang needed them.

How do you explain something to someone you don't fully understand yourself Eva pulled the jewels free and stuffed them in the pouch before flipping and catching the rope stealthily climbing back out the way she had came . She had left Chupa in the barn at the farm his wails had finally subsided he sat in the corner playing with the new kids that had been born last week. Eva sighed maybe this would go much better with Sepsis ...
