Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
"Well you certainly aren't wrong about a cage being bad." He had seen what being locked up could do to otherwise perfectly normal people. He could only imagine what it might do to a creature like the one he had become and it made him shudder, he hoped never to see that. He found himself to be well sorted enough now and thought he now knew what the thirst was that he felt it didn't have the same maddening urgency and he leaned back against the wall closest to him to look at her, curious what she might want to tell him.
What caught him off guard were her questions, they were all simple enough and had he thought about it, should have been very expected. Some would definitely be easier to answer than others but when she asked for his story his expression darkened considerably as his brows creased but he quickly forced it back to his normal passive expression, he may not want to talk about it but she had given him what he wanted rather than kill him which he now realized would have been far easier than he had thought. He studied her quietly for a moment before letting out a slow sigh and figured it best to answer the easier questions first.
"Well my name is Edenor, just that and I mean no offense but even that isn't my real name but the one I've been using most recently and plan to keep it. The rest, well you pretty much summed it up with your questions themselves other than my story. I came here with the clothes on my back, my blade and a few things to get by for food. I went to that abandoned building because that is what I am used to. It makes my past harder to catch up with me because if it does, even with what I am now i will likely be royally fucked." It wasn't a lie in the slightest, he had nowhere to be and so he had not bothered himself with finding somewhere to live and had no way of getting to what money he did have stashed without giving himself away to those that hunted him.
As that thought crossed his mind he frowned and spoke again, his voice giving away how bothered he was by the subject but if he were to give her the truth about some he might as well do it about all of it. "My story, at least the short version, is that I used to run with some mercs. Not the Black Water kind, those people are a bunch of amateurs playing at soldier. There were a few of us all broken into different teams, none of our groups ever met one another and usually we got the kind of dirty jobs that governments didn't even want to risk their own spooks for, or those that had the money and connections to get us to do their unsavory work of cleaning up competition or their own **** ups without it being linked to them. Obviously this isn't the kind of group you can just walk away from and thankfully I got out by killing a few of the others when we were between jobs. As you can imagine I have a death sentence on my head and anyone associated with me should they ever find me. I may have tired of the kind of killing that I was doing there but I still rather like that thrill of taking lives so every so often I would kill a few people over the course of a few weeks when I really felt the urge and would move on."
He sighed with the shake of his head, "Last place I was at they caught up to me as I was already getting ready to leave, managed to slip away but caught a bullet in my shoulder and had to deal with that which wasn't fun. That was about six months ago and I just stayed on the move til I wound up here. Place seemed quiet enough til I found you and, well you know the rest from there." It was much less detailed than the full story but that could wait, after all the less others knew was always better. He didn't care if they found him and killed him but for those not involved in his past it was best that it stayed that way just in case. He doubted very much she would be afraid even if he did tell her everything, but that would be foolish, at least in his mind.
He was pretty sure he had covered her questions and tilted his head, "What about you? What's your name? I wont ask for your story, that's up to you to tell me if you wish to but I figure since you gave me what i wanted then I might as well tell you what you want to know."

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
Eureka listened with a kind of guarded fascination. The guy had the kind of story one might read about, or watch on a TV somewhere. Compared to the life that Eureka had led it seemed so outlandish – but then her life wasn’t too hard to beat. And nothing could beat being turned into a vampire. As far as outlandish stories went, that one topped the bill.
She stored the guy’s name away in her mind as she nodded, her tongue running over the sharpened canines that never quite retracted. The intention had been to learn about the person she had inadvertently strung herself to; a person she’d like to be responsible for, in a way. If she had the patience, and if he had the need. Company, because even cats craved company every now and again. And in order to keep him, she assumed she should answer the same questions she had asked. He was owed that much.
Her posture echoed Edenor’s, her arms folding over her chest as she sucked at her teeth, considering her words before continuing.
”Eureka,” she said, giving him her name. ”Don’t even ******* comment. It’s mine, and I like it,” she said. She didn’t have to tell him that it was the one thing her parents had given her that she liked. That everything else was fairly ******* lacklustre in comparison. It was a sob story that she didn’t sob about – never had. And now that life was gone, so what did she care? It even crossed her mind every now and again to go home. To crawl in through her bedroom window, to find her parents, and to suck them dry. She licked her lips, thinking about it – but returned her attention to Edenor, shoulders rising and falling in a nonchalant shrug.
”I was a normal girl leading a normal boring life until I snapped and killed a man with a broken bottle of olive oil,” she said. Wait, had she killed the guy? Probably. Maybe he’d made it to the hospital. Maybe in the end, he’d lost too much blood. Whatever the case, she had run. They had not caught her. There was no way she was going to allow them to lock her up.
”That life is nothing now. You don’t need clothes or a place to live. It’s all completely overrated,” she said, and she was utterly serious. She’d basically been living the life of a homeless person, even if Chad had left her a place she could stay. She preferred to be outside, regardless of the weather.
”I don’t have a place. I don’t have anything to offer you. Except answers,” she said. She peered at Edenor curiously – did he want anything else? Would he give a ****? He’d asked for this. Really, she had no obligation. But she wanted it, somehow. Deep down. She wanted the company.

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
How could he not crack a slight smile at hearing her name but before he could even begin to comment she already made it clear not to tease her about it. As his mouth was already opening to say something he simply let out a soft, "It's rather fitting actually." Of course he wouldn't elaborate but knowing her name and what had caused him to meet her she indeed was almost his own Eureka moment when he realized how much power he might be able to get. As she continued and said she had been a normal girl with a boring life until she killed someone he wanted to know more, but since she didn't offer it he didn't ask.
As far as he was concerned she was the one that had given him this chance and so anything she said or asked of him he wouldn't question. It wasn't his place to do so, and after having been involved with the group he was in before he knew how a chain of command worked. While it might not be a perfect situation, and he certainly knew that if it was something he absolutely couldn't do he would simply not do it, he wouldn't argue the point but neither would it be done. He could only nod in agreement as she spoke of the previous life being overrated and being nothing. He had long ago known that but now it seemed he hadn't even realized there was a further place to take it but with his change he knew his previous life amounted to less than nothing.
Her next words were surprising though and he knew it showed for a moment on his face. So she had no place of her own and nothing to offer? Why would she think he needed such things? Already she had given him what he wanted and he was used to being on his own and homeless. Such were the way of things and he knew it would be when he chose to leave his past behind and be hunted. Answers though... Answers could be more important than anything else. Information could let you live, escape, kill, really anything you might need to do if you had enough of it. In this case though he didn't even know where he might begin and tilted his head. "Well then since it seems I will be staying in this place I will take whatever answers to questions you think I should get. I don't know where to start and don't want to come in with a mindset of what I might know or not."
He didn't like the fact she seemed on her own. He wasn't entirely sure why but he assumed it was because she had helped him and felt obligated to return the favor. It made him quite puzzled as he normally would take advantage of people if given the chance but there was a strange pull in the back of his mind that he shouldn't do that to her. That voice in the back of his mind had never led him wrong before so he decided to listen to it again and said with a slow nod to himself as he refocused his attention on her and the words spilled out before he even had time to think them through, "Then if you don't have a place for yourself it seems I will have to carve us out our own little niche and see if I can't change that for you. If that is acceptable of course?"

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
Fitting, he said, at which Eureka had to threateningly narrow her eyes. They were slits of black and green, more feline than human for a moment. The expression softened as he continued, as no further crack was made upon her name, or why exactly he should think it was fitting.
In the end, she wasn’t being entirely honest. There were people that she could go to. Well, one person, specifically, but she hadn’t seen Niklaus since he’d got himself a new childe. It was her own doing, really, because she hadn’t done as she was told. Instead of killing a girl, she had got her turned. And Niklaus had no more need of Eureka, if he ever had any need of her to begin with. She was free to live her life as she saw fit.
There was a family forum, too, but Eureka hated going indoors, much less spending any of her precious time hanging around on a computer. She didn’t own a phone – if ever she got one, it was always lost, or broken somehow. She wasn’t too good with personal belongings. And anyway, it was far preferable to get to know people face to face, rather than through a computer screen. She had met a couple of them – first impressions hadn’t been grand.
They all tried to control her. Tried to fit her into a box and behave like a normal person should. Although Edenor might have had the best intentions, Eureka didn’t react well to his offer. Her arms uncrossed from over her chest and she turned away – not walking away from him, but expecting him to follow. She walked with the confidence of the solitary – a predator certain of her own power, her own abilities. She snorted, through her irritation.
”I am not some woman to be kept,” she threw over her shoulder.
”You’re not gonna just… build us a house so I can be your Betty homemaker. Not gonna fuckin’ happen,” she said, before she spread her arms out wide, face lifted toward the sky. ”This city is my niche. The whole fuckin’ thing. Maybe I can give that to you, huh? How do you like that?”
And she wasn’t entirely kidding. They were predators. They had strength, they had power. Humans were nothing to them. If all vampires banded together, they could take over this city. Although she had a sire who’d tried to tell her all there was to know about keeping Masquerade, he was a sire she hadn’t seen since after the first week he’d sired her. He fuckin’ disappeared. So his rules meant nothing to her, now. Why follow rules when there was no one there to punish her for breaking them?

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
He followed after as she walked away, her words pretty much what he had been expecting and it made him smirk as he called back, "Keep you and turn you into some housewife? Hardly. I doubt I could control you for even a moment even if I wanted to." It wasn't just a matter of strength that he meant, she was undoubtedly stronger than he was, but her personality as well. He had a feeling if he tried he would end up shot, stabbed or dead by her just for his effort in trying for even a moment. "Give me the city hmm? This is most acceptable but do you think I would really waste my time building a home? I will take what I want because if you are to be my example and you take as you want what kind of... whatever I am to you, would I be if I don't do the same?"
It was simply a matter of logistics at this point as he had heard what she offered and even before that. She might say the city is hers but he didn't know his way around at all yet and to continue wandering might work for a time he had no doubt eventually a time would come where he would need to rest properly and lick his wounds. At such a time a place of his own would be ideal. Something he could defend if whatever had hurt him followed him back. He was lost in thought as he followed her before asking with a smirk, "So where is it you go when you get hurt? Find some random building like I did when I became like you? Doesn't seem practical to me but if that is what you think best then I will follow your lead even if it gets me killed. If not then all I will offer when I find one for myself is a safe harbor if that time comes." His expression darkened at what he said as he realized that the idea someone would turn against her, and in essence him, had him incredibly agitated as he growled out much more softly though he figured she probably heard him. "Then we go kill them and show them their mistake."
It was only then he came to his senses and realized he had no idea where she was leading him, as honestly speaking he had no idea just where he had been completely before. He knew he might sound stupid asking this now but he figured better to find out than to wander aimlessly with her and then be totally screwed trying to find his way through the city, "So where are we and where are we headed?"

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
Eureka shook her head.
He had missed the point, but that was to be expected, wasn’t it? A complete change of mindset might only happen in specific circumstances. For example – when someone is turned while in the middle of a complete emotional and psychotic breakdown. Her whole life Eureka had followed the rules only to be a nobody, a nothing. A checkout chick in a department store with barely any education and no enthusiasm to try to work her way up the corporate ladder. One can be treated like **** only for so long before their true colours start to show.
Eureka’s life had changed completely and she had vowed, in that moment, to never go back to who she was before. Maybe she went a little overboard with the vow. Maybe she didn’t have to become something so completely opposite – but it was the mindset that she was stuck in, and nothing could change that.
”What do animals do when they are wounded? Wild ones? They don’t… find some neat and comfortable home to go to, to complain about their woes. They… just keep going. They survive. They get on with ****. I don’t crawl into any hole to lick my wounds,” she said, and she shrugged. Though, if there was anywhere she would go…
”There’s a rooftop I was turned on, though. That’s where I end up every single night, when I wake up. In the same place – every single night,” she said. She’d slowed, so that she could walk beside Edenor, while still leading him. She eyed him, curiously – she really should have taken him somewhere a little more interesting or secure. Just in case the same thing happened to him. She pursed her lips, and shrugged it off. She hadn’t heard of anyone else with the same quirk, so he’d probably be fine.
”I’d probably go there, seeing as you’re so curious. But now? I’m going to show you some of the city’s secrets. Did you know, for example, that zombies exist?”

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
He couldn't argue with the logic she presented. Well he in fact could, but he would let her have her way. As far as he knew wolves, one of the most successful predators he had ever encountered usually did have their own dens and would indeed return to them if able once wounded. A smart animal knew when to bide its time and wait. Of course they would also know when they had no choice but to continue once the wound was healed as much as it would be. That was neither here nor there now though and so he could only let those thoughts go.
His ears perked up as she spoke of returning to a rooftop where she had been turned though to always have no choice but to return there? Didn't sound like she enjoyed it nor could he blame her, such a habit could be found out and make one a vulnerable target since a rooftop was nowhere near as easy to defend. "Well then it sounds to me like you got the short end of the deal with that one though it could be worse. You could be waking up every morning, or I suppose evening, in a gutter somewhere covered in filth." He actually wouldn't be surprised if she wouldn't be bothered by that. Hell at this point any break in that monotony to her might be bliss. He couldn't know and he wasn't about to press and ask about it.
He wished he could say what she spoke of next caught him off guard, and maybe it did deep down inside somewhere but at the moment, having experienced what he had and turned into such a creature how could he be? If there were things like them why wouldn't zombies exist? What else might there be? Were all the things that were told to go bump in the night actually real? Didn't change the fact that he didn't actually know and so he could only shrug, "Know they were real? No. But at this point I can't say its completely unexpected though no, I have not ever seen one. The things told about in movies and such true about them? Or us for that matter?"

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
There were things that Eureka hadn’t said, of course. That the rooftop she landed upon was directly above an apartment rented or owned by Aaron Hunter – a man who had captivated some of her time, lately. Not all of it – she wouldn’t admit that she was attached, which was why she didn’t mention it. She wasn’t lying, was she? Her sire wasn’t around. The man who’d stepped in and acted as a sire wasn’t around – and she chose not to seek him out. In regards to ‘family’, inasmuch as shared blood was concerned, she was alone. By her own choice, as much as a lack of contact from the other members.
Sure, she’d probably show Edenor the forum that she herself did not check. If he wanted to make contact, to try to meet them and socialise with them, she wasn’t going to stop him. There was nothing wrong with them. They hadn’t wronged her. They hadn’t done anything bad to her. They hadn’t neglected her – she was not their responsibility. She felt about as neglected as a stray cat who was born a stray, and who only showed loyalty when food was involved. A selfish kind of loyalty. Though perhaps that would not be the case with Edenor.
Sometimes, deep down, she felt sorry for Aaron, that he would put up with such a wild creature. Why did he? She ran from him as much as she stayed with him. Testing the waters. Testing the boundaries. But she did keep going back – and not just because she had no choice but to land on his rooftop every night.
In the end, Eureka grinned.
”It’s not bad. I get a view of the horizon. Sometimes I catch the last rays of the sun in the sky. It’s nice to look at,” she said. The very last rays, the ones colouring the clouds, not the ones spilling over the land. They couldn’t harm her – or any vampire. Not that late in twilight. She turned to Edenor, chewing at her bottom lip. If they were going to be close… why not?
”There’s a man who lives in the apartment below. He’s nice to look at too,” she said with a mischievous grin. ”Anyway. Zombies. Yes – amongst other things. This city is… there’s more to it than what you can see on the surface. I think they are like you see them in the movies? As for us… not quite. The sun? Stay out of it. And don’t go out into the wilderness – there are Fae creatures who only want to kill you. There are hunters in the sewers though once you’re strong enough they’re not an issue. We’re not supposed to show anyone we’re vampires? There are rules, supposedly, though I don’t know how many times I’ve broken them and no one’s punished me,” she said with a shrug. There was so much that Chad had told her in the beginning – all information that she had kept, though she hadn’t had the chance yet to repeat any of it to anyone. Beside Mika. But she hadn’t seen that girl since she’d turned her.
”We have… what are called Paths. Mine is the killer path, which was explained to me after I exhibited particular… abilities. I can jump buildings, my hands can turn into claws, that kinda thing. In time, we can figure out what your path is, too. They might come out in fights. Which is why I’m taking you to the Quarantine Zone. To fight zombies,” she said, with her same mischievous grin.

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
"If you say so." He wasn't trying to be completely dismissive of her sentiment of seeing the last rays of the sun. It was simply that he had not appreciated the beauty of the planet in such a way in a very long time. When all the 'beautiful' places that people longed to go were places he had sown death and destruction it left one rather uncaring about beauty. There was no beauty in the things he had done and it had slowly seeped into his way of thinking as well. Of course he had also picked up on her little comment of a man, which was fairly obvious she had a thing for but once again, it was not his place to pry and he saw no reason to do so either.
Instead he simply put it out of mind for now as she seemed to hurry along in her explanations which made him much more interested. It took quite a bit of his self control to not roll his eyes when she brought up the city not being what it seems on the surface. It was exactly the stuff below the surface that had turned him into the being that stood next to her so he had a feeling that was the case well before she spoke of it. The rest was useful information though as he made some mental notes. 'No Sun. Woods are bad. What the **** is a Fae and if they wanna kill him then why shouldn't he do the same? People in the sewers looking to die.' The rules though he mostly dismissed at the moment, she wasn't sure of them and had broken them without punishment? Ignored if not enforced.
The next part though had his full attention and he listened quietly as she explained why she wanted him to fight, if it was for even more powers he couldn't help wanting to know more and was really the first time he wouldn't just wait for more information from her as he began to question her. "So why wouldn't I share the same path as you if you were the one that changed me? Is there an easy way to find out about the Path I am part of if it's different?" He paused as he thought for a moment before tilting his head, "Is there a particular Path for people that I should avoid or that I should make sure to kill if I see them? Are there any that are going to treat my Path whatever it ends up being that way?"

Re: Dangerous shadows (Eureka)
Eureka laughed as she rolled her eyes. The idea of paths pitted against other paths was kind of amusing. As far as she was aware, there weren’t too many brawls between the vampires. She shrugged her shoulders and shook her head.
”No. Paths aren’t things we can just see on others. There aren’t path clubs. There are… bloodlines and factions. All the paths mingle together. Logistically, it makes sense. Each path has different assets and if all used in conjunction, as a team, if all abilities are made use of… sometimes they click. They work well together. And besides, you don’t have to stick to just the one path of abilities,” she said, licking her lips as she cleared her throat. Living mostly alone and going about her own business, she didn’t have any reason to talk to other people too much. All this talking was giving her a dry throat, one which she might choose to lubricate, soon enough. The city was a veritable buffet, and any poor soul who happened across her path could become her next meal.
”What path you become, I think, depends on your personality, right? I was turned in a fit of murderous rage so…killer makes sense, yeah? Or maybe I just had it in me all along. I reckon, at least in regards to myself, a path is a reflection of who you are. Becoming…this, it kind of heightens everything you once were. Expands it tenfold. You might think you don’t recognise yourself but you just gotta accept that this is who you were. All along. Embrace it,” she said, glancing over her shoulder. Her green eyes grazed the man from head to foot – as if she just might be able to see which path he was, just by looking. But it really didn’t work that way. She sucked her bottom lip into her mouth and, again, shrugged her shoulders. There were things that she had gone through, things that Chad had told her, in order to figure out her own path. She narrowed her eyes, now, as she tried to remember.
”If… you’re an allurist, you can see yourself in a mirror. It won’t be pretty after a while, but you’ll be there. If you’re a shadow, you’ll bleed black blood,” she said, suddenly stopping and turning on Edenor, a devious gleam in her eye.
”Want to test it?”
