the Castle [group6 broken glass]

Post by Mordechai »

‘Winter. My favorite season.’ The seemingly errant thought floated through the mind of the massive killer as he settled noiselessly just outside the stairwell. The long nights of northern Ontario were welcome by the male. He ran a pest extermination business, but only worked from dusk till dawn. With time, the sun had come to affect him less and less. For a vampire, that was a miracle, but he no longer burned, seldom was incapacitated, mostly was hardly affected at all. The baking heat of an August afternoon still made him uncomfortable…. edgy and listless, and then he burned more easily, but only a burn, not bursting into an all consuming fire. But now with the long nights, short days, and tilt of the earth, it was only a minor annoyance now. Which greatly increased his business hours. It was convenient, because very few of the pest he exterminated had more than two legs, and lately, they followed the same hours he did. Lionelli. They were the pest du jour. They had moved into this massive old mansion, and started to sink the claws of their influence deep into the underworld of Harper Rock. Mordechai had commissioned himself into exterminating them. There were others from the city who stopped in and would clear a few of them here and there, but for the laconic killer, it had become his life’s mission. Every waking minute was spent hunting and killing, he seldom left the castle like mansion at all. Mordechai couldn't remember the last time he had fed, nor the last time he had met with his girlfriend, or any friend for that matter. He was solely focused on one goal.

Reaching out with his mind he accessed the web to do more research on his targets. It had been days since he had searched the net, drifted thru the ether. His eyes were closed but his head straightened as he found an unlikely post. A Lionelli had posted to the net. Posted a warning, so it seemed. Mordechai began to search, following trace remnants left by minute packets of data, flowing across the trail like a bird on a trail of crumbs. He was out of practice, had let his hacking skills slip a little while concentrating on other skills, and eventually he lost the trail, but not until getting an approximation of where the post had originated. He did not know the actual point of origin, but he knew it had come from somewhere in Elmworth. The castle was in Elmworth… and the killer did not believe in coincidences . Now the question was if this warning was threat, hoax, or truly a warning. Silently the analytical mind began processing. Most thought of killers, well the class of killers, as dumb hulking brutes, leviathans with small brains… They would be wrong. Many of the killers in his acquaintance were instead quite smart, many brilliant, and Mordechai was a part of that group. His training as a human combined with what he had learned since his turning, all was used as his mind literally began running scenario after scenario, variables changing, in an effort to winnow out the most likely reason for this warning, and whether or not it was true gesture of good faith.

The sun was up, and most of his quarry gone to earth. but his guard ever lowered as he rested, letting his mind wander over the conundrum. A quiet, almost hesitant creak broke the crypt like silence of the castle, and obsidian orbs popped open, locked on to the door at the far end of the great room he rested in. A flicker of daylight outlined the door to the outside world, and slowly grew larger. Reaching out with his mind he drew the shadows of the windowless room to him, wrapping himself in darkness as the computation in his mind stopped, sure that he was soon to have an answer to his question. The door open farther, and one after another, six figures crept into the room, before the door once more shut. Once more his mind reached out, this time slipping into the minds of those that had entered, skimming their recent memories and appraising them of their skills. One question was answered, the threat was real. His next actions required no conscious thought. He had been to war, both open, and covert to many times. Response to threat was an ingrained instinctive reaction. Beside him a form slowly shimmered into being, a decoy, an exact image of himself. As it finished resolving Sinister nestled beneath his cheek and a red dot appeared on the cheek of the male that appeared the most combat capable both from his appearance and from the appraisal he had just made.

As the dot settled on the junction of the man’s jaw and earlobe, there was a quiet coughing sound and the tinny clatter of hollow brass on slate tiles. He knew it was a hit. He knew it was a severed brain stem. He knew it was a sudden death. He knew, because he never missed. Before the body had even started to fold, Mordechai was gone, a burst of speed sending him flying up the stairs to the second floor faster than a human eye could track. And then there were five. Mordechai had no doubt he could exterminate these pests simply on his own, but experience had taught him that the best laid plans never survive contact with the enemy. He needed backup. As he glided across the second floor of the mansion the killer once more drew on the innate power deep inside of him. The picture of a vivacious titian haired warrioress appeared. Reaching out he sent no warning, just drew the woman to him It was the first time he had ever summoned her without warning. Hopefully she still had her weapons with her, if not, it didn't matter, the man was a veritable walking arsenal. Belatedly the thought crossed his mind “I hope she isnt in the shower”

Andrzej Plamen. Macro-vamp as Prudence called him for the short stint while he was a vampire, sired by the red headed woman. She had known him for years-they sort of grew up together [even if he had a handful of years on the woman] and he eventually became her trainer. There were not many she missed after Prudence had been sired; her parents [even if they were dumber than Prudence realized before she entered a world bigger than the one she was used to], and then there was him. How could she not miss him? Sure, he was a drunk and boisterous, but he was one of the few people she could call a friend. A name that would find a way of entering Prudence's life once again.

Many Months ago:

No matter how much the Plamen's didn't believe Grace's words in her letter to them about their son's death, the investigation didn't offer them the insight and closure they needed. Mrs. Plamen spent months lost in her own investigation of her son and the life he lived after Grace re-entered his life. But she couldn't find a single thing about the woman. It was frustrating, and only drove the woman to keep digging. Further and harder. Chunks seemed to be missing from Grace's life after she mysteriously left the carnival behind. Neighbors at the multiple houses and apartment buildings had never heard of the woman named Grace, but they hadn't seen much of her either. Only once in a blue moon at night time, and rarely, if ever, with anyone. Two guys, both muscular in size and large all around. Abnormally large. One neighbor at the Beta apartments thought she went to school, but Mrs. Plamen could never find any truth behind that claim either. No one knew of a girl named Grace Tebeau. It was as if Grace didn't exist.

It wasn't until Mrs. Plamen was walking the streets of the university that the woman; either crazy with loss, or put two and two together. There was a woman by the name of Jolie Minett handing out fliers for a group she belonged to. Humanity First. Mrs. Plamen brought the flier home and showed her husband and from there, the group acquired not one member, but four. Mrs. Plamen, Ilija, their son-in-law Petar Stankic and daughter Mijana Stankic. Eventually, their group would grow with two more members, brothers and from there they would start their reconnaissance of the woman they were more than certain was a blood sucking monster.

Present Day:

Prudence fell asleep in the caverns the night before, but the rumble from an explosion in the far off distance somewhere in the city roused the redheaded woman. Not knowing what the rumble was, Prudence took in her immediate surroundings. Hot man meat? Check. Gun? Check. Bullets? Check. Sword? Check. With all the basic needs [and wants] Prudence was satisfied.

She unwrapped Nathaniel's arm from around her, pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, and then adjusted her weapons so that they sat where they normally sat. “Hey, babe-did ya-” Prudence never finished her thought to her husband before she was ripped away from the drowsy male and standing in front of Mordie.

“What the ****, Mordie!” She punched him in the shoulder and gave him a hard glare. He knew that if he was going to do that, that he needed to tell her first. With a text, or even those annoying mind powers. “I coulda been ******* or something.” Prudence crossed her arms at her chest, being the defiant and defensive little **** she could be with him. “If ya wanted to see me, all ya had to do was holler.” Married life, the second time around had been good to Prudence, so good and busy that the two of them didn't see each other as much as Prudence would like. But, if he needed her, well and truly, Prudence would drop everything and be at Mordie's side. “Was that you blowing **** up?” Prudence asked as she stepped back, and tripped over the body of a person.

She landed on her ***, the back of her knees bouncing against the dead person, one hand smushing the woman's face so that it turned her facial features away from Prudence, and the other pushing on her calf so hard that a bone snapped in it as Prudence landed. “Girl problems?” Pru joked with Mordie as she moved to stand, eyes on the woman's body and then finally her face. “Woah. Mordie! What the ****?” Prudence grabbed the woman by the jaw so that she got a much better look at her. There was no mistaking who the woman was-even if it had been years since Prudence saw her. Mirjana had features that were strong and distinguished; ears that were slightly larger than normal and a nose that almost vanished because of her large, blue eyes-the same eyes as her father. “Uhhhh.” Prudence didn't know what to say. Mordie had obviously killed her, but if she asked why-it would seem out of place for the redhead and might draw some questions of his own. “Could help me up.” Pru gave him a light smack to his calf before she stood, eyes still on the woman on the floor of the castle.

The killer silently watched and waited as Prudence went through her normal rant, then finally spoke. Mordechai's voice was the low quiet rumble of a distant earthquake as he spoke as quietly as he could. More of a mumble than a whisper, as the blended sounds neither traveled as far or as distinctly as a true whisper would. "There are five more, this one was the most dangerous. I believe the one that spoke on Crow told the truth. The humans are rising." Silent for a moment the killers eyes roved constantly as he reached out with his senses. 'They suspect or know what we are, it is no stray chance they come now with the sun at its peak, instead of under the cover of the night as most curs hunt." Taking a step to the left his eye flicked momentarily to the titian haired huntress' eyes before once more looking to the stairs. "I would not have bothered you, except we must not let any escape. They must all die." Silently he assessed his weaponry, experienced digits roaming quickly over each ensuring their readiness for the hunt to come. "I feel the day, and fear that it might prevent my success on my own, there is no other i trust.... Hunt with me."

"Five more?" Prudence repeated as her blue tinted circles looked around the immediate area. All the pupils came up with were three; the dead woman, Mordie and finally the redhead's feet.

She listened to the rest of what Mordie had to say, resisting a snort that threatened to escape through her nostrils as Mordie mentioned the threat. Prudence had shrugged it off and still sort of was; but the idea of Macro-vamps sister being a vampire fanatical seemed-a little too worldly for folks like her. For people that was like Grace Tebeau.

"Look, Mordie. I'm with ya for whatever, but you so sure about this one?" Her eyes moved off her booted feet, to the dead woman and then to him. "What I mean is, she don't look like a whole lot. If this is their best, the rest shouldn't be too hard to exterminate. Tag team or split up and meet up again?" Prudence wasn't going to waste any more time for her friend-she simply waited for his thoughts so they could go from there

"The others are here. This one has had much training in the melee arts... how ever rock smashes scissors.... and bullets beat blades at distances. I sniped her, then retreated to call you. The paths of this castle are circular, we can move to ambush, or hunt." Nudging the body on the floor with one size fifteen New Rock the killer knelt next to the body then started searching the pockets. Slipping a folded paper from one he opened it as he slid the fallen humans weapons into his pack. The stoic expression on his face was unchanged as he read it, then handed it up to his titian haired friend. "I found posters like this in Cherrydale last week. I tore them all down, but the next night they were once more all over. It seems as if someone is uniting the humans once more against us." Pulling a silenced Glock G40 Gen4 in the MOS configuration from his drop leg holster he palmed the slide to insure one was in the tube, then glanced over at Pru... "Let's head up into the east wing, it is time to hunt....who knows, maybe one of the Lionelli can stay the day. If they do we should be able to tell if they are allied, or if the warning rings true."

There were others. Prudence wanted to ask if he'd seen the others; knowing that if Macro-vamps sister was here-at the very least, so was her husband. Those two were peas in a pod and both very protective of the other. Maybe it was who they were due to the closeness and family sense the carnival life provided, or a Serbian thing; Prudence didn't know. What she did know was that he would be in here.

The red head's neck lifted and even arched towards Mordie while he read whatever he pulled from the body, wondering what she had on her. Mordie eventually passed it along to Pru, letting her see the fliers about some group called 'Humanity First.' The red head frowned. What had made the Plamen sister join a group that wasn't tied to the inner circle of the Serbian ran carnival? That seemed out of place. Laws there didn't match laws on the outside world, the world Prudence now lived in. Punishments weren't like the outside world either. Everything was done internally. Something wasn't right.

Prudence nodded her head and tossed the paper on the ground. "East sounds good." Prudence agreed quietly, the sense of displeasure rising in her. "Let's make it quick. No need to draw anything out. Stop others from joining and rising if they know they're messing with the wrong group of people." With that the red head vanished into the shadows but remained close to Mordie as they headed east.

Although the killers senses were cast out in all directions on a never ending search for threats and targets, but the movements of his friend had caught his eye. Her reaction to the body was unexpected, for a moment it seemed as though she might know the corpse at their feet. Coupling that with the uncharacteristically quiet response to his query set off an alarm in the back of his mind. silently he assessed her, but made no comment, Mordechai knew she was true. This would not be the first time he had entrusted Prudence with his safety, security, life. She was his goto when he needed someone to watch his six on a mission.

Mordechai did a final check of the Glock as he watched the shadows envelope the titian haired beauty. With a nod in her direction he glided silently across the cavernous room towards the door that lead to the eastern wing. The time he had spent with the wraith Hykajae had taught him even more stealth the the humans that had employed him before his change could ever have dreamed of. Even with his massive frame, the killer moved silently as a ghost. Leaning his head against the door, his eyes sought out the dark cluster of shadows gathering against the far side of the door frame. The faint sound of voices drifted through the thick door, and as he straightened he gave a nod towards the darkness, "I hear at least three." Maintaining silence Mordechai had spoken mind to mind with her as he usually did when they hunted together. At one point the hidden female had reviled at the practice, but with time, she had given grudging approval to him, as she knew he did not use it for banal conversation. Tapping his chest, he pointed to the high right side of the opening, then after a gesture in her direction pointed low and to the left. Holding up three fingers, he slowly folded them. As he reached two, he once more reached out to her "Do you know them?" Then as the last finger folded he ripped oven the door.

Spinning into the room the killer's Glock tracked across the room, traversing the arc at the same speed his eyes moved. His half of the room was clear.

There was an appreciative silence as the duo headed east; the direction Mordechai picked for whatever reason. Maybe Prudence was wrong. Maybe Mirjana was here by herself. Fell into the wrong crowd, got out of the Carnival life for whatever reason-the wrong people, seeing the world was a lot bigger than they realized, or just got flat out fed up with the life style. It wasn't an easy one, going from city to city, sometimes being the brunt end of jokes because some people could do unique things with their bodies, or looked a little different.

And then when they came to a door, she stopped and listened. Mordie entered her head and Prudence wasn't so sure Mirjana was alone now. It was a really good chance one of those three was her husband, Petar. His question brought a narrow glance in Mordie's direction, even if Prudence couldn't be seen by the male next to her. "No." Prudence shook her head and then sighed. "I mean, yes. A while ago. Not anymore. I knew the woman." Prudence couldn't say if she knew the others behind the door that Mordie was hearing. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. She couldn't see through the door and even if the red head did know any one of them, or all of them, she didn't really feel like sharing that piece of information because that opened up questions.

Before Prudence could say anything else, the door was ripped off the hinges by her taller, more muscular companion and he headed in, not waiting for her to go in. Which was cool, Prudence knew he could take care of himself and what he couldn't, she would when the tall red head entered in after him. He went left, so Prudence went right after moving around the wall and inside the door frame. "Awww, ****." Prudence said quietly as she was met face to face with Ilija Plamen and two men she didn't know.

Ilija looked just as surprised when his eyes fell on the red headed woman. He had begun to wonder if she skipped town, or was a myth anymore, but here she was, almost half a decade later and the woman looked almost exactly like he remembered her. The only difference was she was taller than him; much taller. Abnormally taller. Before he could say or do anything, one of the two men came charging at Prudence, followed by the other, letting their medic get covered in safety by them as long swords started swinging at the woman, forcing her backwards.

The sound of swords being drawn, mixed with a muttered exclamation from his red headed partner, whirling Mordechai from the empty section of the chamber. Although she had not gained the mass that the Sangue killer had, Pru was much taller than when they first met, tall enough to block a clear line at the charging Jet Li wannabes. Stepping to the side the Glock rose, a natural extension of the killers arm. While he could not draw a safe bead on the charging two, the third was a clear and easy shot.

As it always did in these situations, his mind had suppressed all thought of anything not directly bearing on this exact moment in time and space. Flickering eyes, cataloged the men against his memorized appraisals. The pair were good at martial arts, not to the level of the pair of night stalkers that had just entered the room, but good none the less. He had no fear for Prudences continued survival, even with the wait of the days lethargy upon them. The third however was a non combatant it seemed. Except any that hunted the killer and his friends forswore all right to that title. Trajectories of movement and ballistics were all calculated in a split second. Threat assessments made Mordechai's finger smoothly tightened. A rippling shock wave rode up the the third males thigh as the Glock quietly spit a pair of one hundred eighty grain Delta Elite Gold Dot hollow points smashing through the mans femur. He would never use that leg again, but at least he lived. Mordechai had decided someone would need to be kept for answers, and potentially used as another warning. Evidently the last female hunter he had left broken and bloodied, crucified to those ******* paladins cathedral doors had not gotten her intended message across. The sound of the slide racking had been louder then sound of the shots, but now the males screams drowned out all. Drowned out all sound to the point that Mordechai missed the sounds of two more slipping from hiding. The impact of the three shot burst into his shoulder forced a staggered step from the normally unyielding killer. The clatter of his Glock slipping from nerveless fingers was covered by the echoing of the unsuppressed shots, and the screaming medic. A low growl emerged from the killers throat as he turned to face the newly found menace.

When Ilija dropped from the bullets Mordechai put in him, his duffle bag of various supplies had dropped too and spilled out everywhere. Mostly medical things, but a few personal assets of the male's that Prudence recognized. A picture of Macro-vamp before he was a human, when he was a boy, just before his teens, with his sister that Mordie had just killed in the other part of the castle. A picture of Mrs. Plamen, Ilija, their daughter and Andrzej in front of a tent, their tent from who knew when? Prudence didn't know the specific date, or year, but the dirt stained red, tan and yellow fabric, along with the tattered state of the tent was remember-able.

Because she had been taken by surprise, the other two males in the room had fled and left the older male to fend for himself. Wasn't it disgusting? Prudence wouldn't have left Mordie, and she was pretty fricken sure he would never leave her. "****!" Prudence stomped a foot and crossed her arms at her chest as she realized the reason they had gotten away was because of her. Welp, that **** just wouldn't do.

"Don't kill him!" Prudence recognized the way Mordie's attention had turned to the older Serbian male, Ilijia. "Yet." In a burst of celerity she was in front of the old guy, hand on his shirt before she brought the other arm back to punch the guy out. But as she was going to do that, Prudence wasn't prepared for the guy's flight or fight response to kick in and he kicked her in the knee, making the swinging arm miss the guy completely before the red haired killer's knee buckled from the impact a little and she wobbled, trying to keep her balance. Which wasn't all that hard, but the surprise of what could be his final attack was powerful too.

Prudence rolled away from Ilijia to keep from falling on him, in the direction where the other two had been before they left the scene. "Maybe rough him up a little. Get some info from his punk ***." Prudence rubbed at her knee before she bounced twice, testing how her weight would hold on the knee. Just fine. While it hurt, he hadn't managed to knock it out of place. "I'm gonna go find those other bitches and try and lead them back this way." Once again the shadows blanketed the tall, red headed woman before Prudence was off to find the others in stealth mode. She wouldn't hesitate or be taken by surprise again.
