Distractions [Jacey]

Post by Peter Parkman »

The sky wasn’t clear. There were a few clouds around, obscuring the stars and whatever there may have been. Peter was slightly distracted as he stared up through the scattered foliage, wondering where the moon might be. A frown creased his brow as he started adding the numbers in his head; what day of the month was it, and when was the last full moon? When was the last new moon? What were all the phases in between, again? And what phase was it on, now? He was slightly ashamed to admit to himself that he did not know, and he made a vow that as soon as he went inside he’d go and research the phases of the moon. The next time he came outside and looked up, he’d know exactly where the moon was and what it should look like, even if he could not see it.

The shame was a distraction, really. The notion that he needed to learn more and do more because he had more free time on his hands. As much free time as a man who ran four businesses could have, anyway. Except, the majority of his businesses were now running smoothly, without any hiccups or bugs. He had employees helping him out, and they were good employees, too. Steadfast. And they knew what they were doing. It took a lot of the work out of his own hands so that he could focus on the more important things.

Except, there was an empty space in his chest that he couldn’t quite figure out, though he assumed it had to do with the loss of Jersey. She hadn’t died, of course; she was still around. And although she had said she loved him, although she had, for all intents and purposes said it’s not you, it’s me, he did not believe her. But it wasn’t logical to get so caught up in those kinds of emotions; the disbelief and the heartache that he refused to acknowledge. So he distracted himself with other things. Like the moon.

A heavy body whacked itself against his thigh; Hunter, the big Doberman, wanted to play. He had a stick in his mouth and he looked up at Peter with eager expectation. The four other dogs were off doing their business or rifling through the undergrowth. Peter reached down and took the stick; Hunter immediately backed up. Peter threw the stick, and it went hurtling through the air and into the shadows of the park. Hunter immediately bounded after it.

Peter went back to crossing his arms over his chest, now staring into the darkness rather than up at the sky.

Welcome to Harper Rock

That's what the sign on the outskirts of the city had said. Just another stop in the journey that was life. Quebec had been fun for the month that she had been there, but that ever present feeling of 'you don't belong here,' 'not this place,' and 'not quite yet' had set in. Her wanderlust caused her to become antsy on day twenty, and on day twenty-one, Jacey Everhart was gone again. Jacey was determined to find her place in the world and had hoped Quebec would be it, but it hadn't been. So, it was on to the next city, the next hope that the place she fell into would be the one.

"Welcome to Harper Rock," Jacey repeated to herself as she stood under the darkened sky, spinning herself in a circle before she began her walk. An adventure of sorts. Always an adventure. Most visitors to a new place would have their maps, their GPS, their phone. . . whatever they could find to navigate through the place they had chosen to explore. But not Jacey. The most exciting part for the woman was the exploring. With a GPS or a map, the destination was planned out. The course was set and was strict. When one neglected these technologies of the present day, one would be able to experience the small wonders that the world provided. For example that very morning, as Jacey daydreamed about what amazing things she would discover in this city, she had gotten lost. It was during this moment that she had stumbled upon a small cafe, where she had the most delicious pastry. What it was, she didn't know, but it was well worth getting lost.

Jacey's mind had drifted off, thinking about maps and other technologies used to navigate when something out of the corner of her eye caught her attention. Slowly, the haze lifted as she turned towards whatever it was that had moved. To her delight, a dog, a doberman to be exact, was before her. The dog was chewing on a stick, it's tail wagging furiously in what Jacey could only assume was pure bliss. Without a second thought, Jacey practically skipped over to the animal. Once she reached it, brought her hand down, stroking the top of the dog's head.

"Aren't you just the most handsome dog I have ever seen!" she cooed at the dog, stroking the fur slowly. "Why are you out here all by yourself?"

The dog wasn’t by himself. Of course he wasn’t. It just looked like he was. Peter’s animals were all very well trained and none of them were violent; as if they had somehow adopted the tenets of their master. Though, it wasn’t a coincidence, really. The dogs were all spoiled and well-fed, and they weren’t hunting dogs. Never had Peter ever encouraged them to hunt or kill for pleasure. The death of any animal—but it human or otherwise—caused Peter more grief than he wanted to manage. There were so many things in this new life that seemed to centre around violence, it was any wonder Peter kept to himself indoors.

He’d even thought he’d give hacking a go, but even then, he wouldn’t be doing much. Maybe trading scripts every now and again, but what else did people hack for? To sabotage other businesses, or to report wayward vampires to the bounty system so that they could be slaughtered by that faction. Peter had never had any encounters with Tytonidae, and for that he was happy.

Though, he drank his blood from blood bags and never went outside. Of course it was very unlikely that he’d give away vampire secrecy.

All of a sudden, the dogs all started to swarm toward one area. Of course, as soon as they saw one of their companions getting attention, they would all rush to get a piece of their own. Where Hunter was enjoying the singular attention of the stranger all to himself for a half a minute, soon that stranger would be inundated with panting, tail-wagging dogs; two Jack Russells (Jack and Ellie), a Border Collie (Lady) and a Husky (KD). Peter, curious and a little anxious that the dogs would go too far and he would have to hunt them down (or that they would leave him too—of course he wouldn’t admit to that one), followed them.

It was almost like déjà vu.

A sharp, bright whistle sung from Peter’s lips as he got closer; the dogs’ ears flattened guiltily and their excitement ebbed.

”I’m so sorry. They’ll get dog hair all over you,” he said, slapping his hand against his thigh to get the dogs to come to him, and to leave the poor girl alone.

Her mind had wandered off as she scratched the animal's ears. Maybe Jacey would get herself her own dog. A big one. . . no, a small one. Maybe a medium sized one. Which one would be better for traveling? Perhaps a smaller breed would be better, as it wouldn't take up as much room. Traveling as much as the woman does required one to pack light and to pack as little as possible. Easier to, as Jacey saw it, escape from the confines of the city that was determined to trap her within its clutches. Dramatic, sure, but wanderlust caused one to be a bit dramatic. Or maybe that was just Jacey. A small dog. That's what she would go with. A small dog that wasn't the yappy one. What was it again? Oh. Right. The chihuahua. At the thought of a chihuahua, Jacey's nose wrinkled. Her neighbor in Syracuse had one. Kept her up to all hours of the night. It was nights like those that Jace wished that she were deaf, like her mother. At least her mother got a full night sleep.

As she continued to love upon the dog at her feet, a few more dogs joined their friend, tails wagging expectantly. "Oh! Look at all of you!" Jacey practically squealed as she began to pet each of the other dogs. The smaller ones caught her attention first. Yep she thought to herself, I'm going to have to get one. And definitely a smaller one. I could take them anywhere! It was then that a high pitched sound caused the woman to jerk her hand away from the dogs. Did she hurt one of them? Did she pull their fur on accident? Panicked that she had done something to injure one of them, Jace moved to check them over. However, the looks that the dogs had, ears pressed back, heads turned in the same direction caused her to pause. Clearly, she hadn't harmed one of them. So what was that sound? And why did the dogs look guilty?

”I’m so sorry. They’ll get dog hair all over you."

The voice startled Jacey. Had she not been alone this entire time? Had she really missed the fact that there was another human being in her presence? It was quite possible. Things like that happened to Jace all the time. In fact, if the woman's head wasn't screwed onto her body, the woman would be in worse shape that she already was.

"Oh no! They're fine! Really! I love dogs," she exclaimed as she reached down to give each of the dogs one final pat. "I'm assuming that these are your dogs. They're really pretty dogs.." she finished.

The dogs trotted between the human and the vampire; one their master and owner and the person they knew best. The one that fed them and loved them and played with them, and bowed down to every (most of) their whims. The other was new and fresh and exciting and she had a nice voice and maybe, maybe they missed a female touch. They’d got accustomed to Jersey and now Jersey was gone. Maybe they missed Jersey; maybe they wondered what had happened to her. Could dogs be heartbroken or would they forget after a week or two?

Peter shook his head. No. They wouldn’t forget and it wasn’t as if they would never see Jersey again. She was not gone forever; they had agreed to be friends. And she had dropped off those source codes, though Peter had just nodded and mumbled a response that she probably hadn’t heard before she’d disappeared again. She was still around. She still visited the Asylum. They saw her. They would see her. The dogs could suck it up and get over it.

And get excited about new company. Fresh company. Who was this person and was she a friend and their lolling tongues and gleaming eyes seemed to ask can we keep her can we can we? Can we?!

Peter blinked and sighed and shook his head again. No. The dogs were not actually talking to him and this human female was not a pet to be taken up and kept. The dogs were not asking for anything and even if they were Peter would tell them no. Could tell them no. This was just a stranger in a park and what possible reason could he have for wanting to keep her? He cleared his throat.

How long had it been since she’d last spoken?

Peter used to know these things. He used to keep time like a time keeping wizard. His fingers rung around his opposite wrist and, fiddlesticks. He’d left his watch inside. On the bedside table. How could he do such a thing?! The anxiety twisted in his gut but he did his best to focus on the company.

”Thank you. They’re groomed every Monday starting at 9pm,” he answered. ”They get twenty minutes each. Hunter gets half an hour,” he says, pointing to the larger dog. Focusing on the grooming routine helped Peter to forget he’d left his watch behind.

The dogs seemed restless. Why, she didn't know. It was times like this that Jacey wished that she could talk to dogs. Not in the way that Cesar Millan did. No, she wanted to actually talk to dogs. If she could, then she would be able to understand what went on within the minds of the dogs. They'd be able to tell her why they were feeling restless! She gave the dogs one more pat - one more for the road, of sorts - before she stood up. Jacey ran her hands over the thighs of her jeans, eliminating whatever imaginary dog fur may still be lingering on the fabric.

Once she figured that the fur was gone, Jacey stood up. She reached up to her hair, quickly throwing it up into a messy bun. Something that she did quite often. Her hair drove her nuts, but she didn't have the heart to cut it off. While she was busy with her hair, she studied the man. He was a giant compared to her! But then again, everyone was a giant compared to her. At 5'2", Jacey was under the average height for females. Sometimes, this drove her crazy, especially when she had to reach things on the top shelf.

Once her hair was up, she tilted her head slightly to the left. An almost imperceivable movement. He was a rather good looking man. However, he looked as though he was getting ready for bed, dressed in pajamas. Maybe the dogs demanded that he take them out. It was a good thing for her, though! It solidified her decision to adopt herself a dog. That's selfish, Jacey, her inner voice scolded her. She frowned to herself, pushing her thoughts away.

The man had begun to speak again. Thank you. They’re groomed every Monday starting at 9pm. They get twenty minutes each. Hunter gets half an hour. She glanced down at the dogs once again. "You can tell! They're well taken care of."

In a last minute decision, Jace zigzagged through the dogs, walking towards the man. Before she reached him however, she tripped over her own feet. Before she hit the ground, she caught herself. "Not again.." she muttered. Recovering, Jacey smiled brightly, extending her hand to the man. "Hi. I'm Jacey and I'm a klutz," she said, jokingly.

As the girl straightened, so too did Peter; not that he wasn’t standing straight already, but he had a habit of hunching his shoulders a lot. As if always trying to stoop to the height of others, or subconscious of his height, somehow. Something that had been gained over time, as he grew taller than all his contemporaries who chose to tease him regardless. It just added more fodder to their verbal rifles, in the end. Height did not intimidate them, not with someone so timid as Peter. He couldn’t have been happier when his parents finally decided to home school him.

No one teased him anymore, of course. No one bullied him. Most people were adults who’d grown out of that kind of behaviour, if they’d ever indulged in it as children or teenagers. Either that, or Peter never gave them the chance because he never left home. The Asylum behind him was home, now. Another shift in his life which would inevitably put him on the path to unforeseeable future. Eternity stretched out in front of him and he had no idea what he was going to do with it. It kind of terrified him.

The hands that Peter had crossed over his chest—in a manner of hugging himself rather than of disdain or disregard—snapped out as the woman stumbled, as if to catch her before she face-planted into the soft earth. She caught herself before Peter had the chance, however, and instead straightened and held out her hand.

Peter knew how to react to klutzes. He’d dated one for a very long time. He was well practiced, and he was silenced for a moment by this girl’s sudden appearance. What was this, some kind of taunt offered to him by fate? Some kind of… cruelty? He swallowed and took the offered hand, shaking it firmly.

”Peter. Literal OCD,” he said. He smiled. It was a strange way to introduce oneself, but as always he just followed the other person’s lead. He wasn’t so good at the social thing, so following the lead was all he could do.

His hand shake was nice and firm, completely contradictory to the vibes that he was putting off. His hand shake spoke of loads of confidence, but his vibes spoke of a timid, shy man. Jacey was very well tuned to the vibes of others. It was something that she had picked up from years of being with her mother and not speaking for the first seven years of her life. Not that she couldn't. She just didn't feel that it was necessary. Deaf mother and all. Her mother made sure that speech therapists came to visit her from the moment her grandmother signed that Jacey was a hearing child, so she was well versed in the ability to speak.

When he mentioned OCD, Jacey was quick to release the man's hand. It wasn't that she thought that OCD was something that could be caught, no. She wasn't dumb. She just didn't want to make him uncomfortable. Jacey tried to be very understanding and in tune to the needs of others.

"Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't realize," she began, pulling her backpack strap off her shoulder. She unzipped the front pocket, digging around in search of something. "I have hand sanitizer somewhere in here. Just give me a minute.."

Finding the hand sanitizer, she popped the top open. "Would you like some?" she asked, hoping to make the man feel better. She wasn't quite sure if he was overly concerned with germs, but it was better to ask than to just assume that he was fine. "And hello, Peter!"

When human, Peter had been obsessive about germs. Upon becoming a vampire however, and slowly realising that germs no longer had any affect, his logic allowed him to relax a little in regards to strict cleanliness. Also, living with five dogs meant that he was always a little accustomed to general grit. That’s not to say that Peter had turned into a slob. Far from it. His living and work spaces were and still are bereft of any dust. He cleaned regularly and with concentrated zest. Everything had its place, and if it was put away out of its place he might just lose his ****.

But when he is in control of his own movements, when he is moving swiftly along the path of his own routines, he was absolutely fine. He laughed and took some of the sanitizer anyway. It might make the girl feel better. But it also reminded Peter that he didn’t have his watch, and he found himself ringing his wrist again. As if he might be able to summon the object to him with only a strong thought. To calm himself, he started to count in his head. In the background. He could do that quite easily; he could count to sixty before starting over again, and could keep a mental tally of how many times he had counted to sixty. Of course it meant that his responses could be a little slow, and the tally might get a little messed up if he was overly distracted. But it was a quiet night and the dogs were behaving himself, and the Asylum stood behind him like a bright, warm, welcoming light house. He could always flee indoors if the going got rough.

”How were you supposed to know? Why are you apologising?” he asked. He was genuinely curious. Why do people apologise for things that aren’t their fault? For things that they could have had no inkling of, and absolutely no affect upon? His toes curled, and his words were slightly methodical, almost robotic—what with the counting going on in the back of his head.

Jacey squeezed some sanitizer into her hand, after she had given some to the man - no, Peter, his name was Peter - before her. She rubbed her hands together, singing the ABC's to herself in her head. It was one thing that carried over from her childhood. Her grandmother had taught her to sing the ABC's in her head so that she would always know when the germs on her hands were gone. Her grandmother was old fashioned in that way. Satisfied, she put the sanitizer back in it's designated spot in her backpack. Front pocket, small interior pocket.

His question to her caused her to pause. Why was she apologizing? It was a good question. But it was one that would cause her to babble. And her babbling was something that tended to drive people away. They never liked the idea that she couldn't keep her mouth closed once she started. And mentioning that she had a sixth sense when it came to the feelings and needs of others would definitely cause the man to turn tail and run. People always considered her crazy when she mentioned her sixth sense. Gypsy mumbo jumbo, they would say. Crazy Jacey, they would call her. However, he seemed genuinely curious. Perhaps she would be able to keep her answer to a minimum.

"Well. . ." she began, thinking of something short to say. "I may have made you uncomfortable. And that's not okay." She shifted awkwardly, moving from her left leg to her right leg and back. She then moved her backpack up her shoulder. "So. . ." she muttered, pushing a stray piece of hair that had fallen into her face behind her ear. "How long have you been in Harper Rock?" Something relatively safe to ask. Not the real question she wanted to ask. No. The vibes of this city were screaming to her, saying there was something special here. But she didn't know if he would be able to answer that question or if he would stare at her like she was crazy.
