We're moving and she's agreeing to the game and its terms. I can tell she's thinking, if not by the time that's passed, but by the look in her eyes. She's analyzing me. It doesn't bother me, people trying to figure me out. I don't believe most people can anyways, but I always welcome the opportunity.
Velveteen talks and I give her a quirky grin. She's sort of right and sort of not. Maybe it was a trick question, but technicalities say other wise in my mind. "Good guess, but I spent about fifteen hours on the track team before I gave it up. Not a crowd person, even from sidelines." I nod and grab out some bills from my black, worn, leather wallet as we step closer and are now the second group from using the canon.
"I did learn to drive a motorcycle and stuck with it. I did not graduate in the top ten percent." I'm surprised she thought that about me. Not that I consider myself an unintelligent being. I knew I wasn't. Scores said so. Twenty percent wasn't all that bad at the end of it all, though. "I exceeded well in things like shop and the sciences. English and speech class, not so much. I'm not much of a talker." I say with another small grin, stating the obvious between the two of us. "In high school, I couldn't even persuade you to buy a glass of water off me if we were in the Sahara." I admit with a shrug of my shoulders. I had an amazing speech teacher in college before I dropped out of boredom, who managed to get me up at the podium for three minutes and fourty-two seconds before I had to step away.
"Good guess though." I assure her with a smile. Most people would assume everyone started driving on a car, so would have thought that to be the lie. Her guess shows me she isn't typical. Not that the thought ever crossed my mind before. It just validates my original thought about Velveteen. "Your turn. Two truths and a lie." The canon goes off and I cover my ears out of reflex and because everything is more enhanced as a vampire. Sounds and sights especially.

Re: Dent
Velveteen was pretty confident in her guess so when she was told she was wrong the disappointment was shown on her features for the briefest of moments. Though as Roderic spoke her eyes narrowed a little and she opened her mouth to speak but snapped it shut. Her head tilted to the side a little as she gave what she was about to say a little more thought. A sly grin curled at her mouth and she shook her head, obviously completely prepared to argue her point. One thing that was very typically Velveteen.
"Hang on a minute there Bloodthief. You said....two truths and one lie. Right? But you just gave me two lies and one partial truth." She quirked an eyebrow and set her gaze on his. The goings on around them like background noise as she concentrated her efforts on the enigma that called himself Roderic.
"Firstly, The statement presented was 'You have never driven a car before.' The fact that that you have learned to ride a motorcycle and stuck with it does not make that statement any less true. So effectively I am right and that was a lie." She paused for a moment giving him time to process that before continuing. "And secondly...." though even she had to admit this one was more nit picky than anything, "Fifteen hours on a team doesn't necessarily constitute that you were 'part' of the team." She grinned a little and eyed him as if she figured he had done it intentionally.
When the canon went off she flinched and the sound rang in her ears loudly but died off quickly. She had well become accustomed to the enhanced senses. "But if that is the way you want to play. Let me see. Two truths and one lie." Her sterling gaze narrowed and her pale lips were pursed and dragged to one side of her face thoughtfully. Exactly how much was she prepared to give away at this point. So very few actually knew much of Velveteen and her past. She shrugged and decided **** it. "I had never been on a date until after I was...turned." The last word said in more of a whisper that remained as she finished her statements. "My parents had me commited when I was thirteen years old and lastly I was locked up for a week years ago for a plethora of unpaid parking fines." She smirked and shifted her weight from one foot to the other as they once again shuffled forward a few more steps.

Some people will never like us...
And we will never give a ****.

Re: Dent
She flinches when the cannon goes off and I immediately look around to see what, if anything else was going on around us. I don't see anything, so I attribute her flinching to the fact she hasn't been around a lot of loud things in her life. It's not like I have either, but the canon had gone off before and would continue to do so as we make our way forward and well after we leave. It was expected and I had gotten used to it.
Velveteen starts to pick apart my answers, starting with the motorcycle claim. I listen, my head angling towards her as I take in her opinion on the matter. Next, she catches my half truth about the track team and I grin a little more and nod my head in agreement. She was right, if we wanted to be nit picky. But, right in the end.
She's smiling through most of it, which means, she doesn't mind the half-truths she's called me out on and she's still willing to play the game. I inch a little closer to Velveteen, only to hear her better because there is a lot of distraction going on. People talking, people drinking things, the canon being loaded, people explaining the 'rules' of using the canon to the group before us and even the sounds of cars somewhere in the not too far distance. Probably coming here.
I pick apart her answers one by one. I don't know Velveteen's state of mind. Not truly. She appears to be sane, I've never heard her say anything to lead me to believe otherwise. Her parents could have locked her up at thirteen for something. Teenage rebellion or something close to it. Parent's were notorious to medicate their children when they didn't understand them. I don't really know the laws or code of ethics from where she's from. I know she's not from the US, or Canada, based on her accent and jargon. It could be possible, which meant that it could be possible she hadn't ever kissed someone until she was made a vampire depending on how long she had been locked up. Unlikely, but possible. Still, based on what little I know of her, physically and mentally, I find it difficult to believe someone wouldn't have tried to kiss her before she was in her mid-twenties or so. I don't actually know how old Velveteen is, but I would guess at least twenty-four.
But then I think about the last thing she said about unpaid parking tickets. If she had been locked up before, most people try to avoid being locked up in any capability. And statistically, aren't women the better drivers? Insurance companies thought so. Granted, it was unpaid parking tickets.
I don't answer for a while. Not before it's our turn as I'm trying to process what she's said and how little I know about her. I think she's given me some insight to her life, unintentionally. I step forward and slap the money I pulled out of my wallet a while ago in the palm of the farmer as he gives us the lowdown on how the cannon works. But what I gather from the gist of the long speech is that you use your foot to press on a pedal that will power the thing up and give it as much force as you think the thing needs to get to the other side of the field and hit the target. After pressing the button on the side of the machine, near the handles that help you take aim at your target. Appears easy enough. Idiot proof really. It's just getting the angle right and the force right and things should line up nicely.
Finally, I give my answer. "I believe the lie is the unpaid parking ticket one." I say once the guy goes to retrieve some ears of corn for us. "If your parents did as you claimed, it would be more than likely you wouldn't have met many people to have the opportunity to kiss someone. Especially a man because usually you are in that situation with those of the same gender. And you seem happily married, so I suspect you don't bat for both teams." I really don't care if she does like men and women, I just have never seen her act like she likes both genders in that respect. "The belief is, if put away once, I find it unlikely you would place yourself in a situation where you might be put away again." She might find that statement insulting if I am wrong, but it wasn't meant to be. I find Velveteen to be highly intelligent and so I don't believe she would risk it. But then again, how many people do you know that have been put away for a few unpaid parking tickets?
I don't ask if I'm right, I know she'll tell me. Instead, I point to the cannon after it's filled by the guy. "Ladies first, or do you want to know what you're up against?" She really doesn't have much to worry about, but it was still worth keeping her on her toes.
