One second, Reka is running down the street. Something has blossomed in her heart, as if this first violent act has unlocked something inside of her. Maybe it’s just adrenaline or shock. Maybe she’s numb, and not entirely herself. But she laughs. The puffs of smoke erupt from her lips as she laughs, and the gleam in her eye is half mad. But she is proud of herself, in a way. Proud that she is capable of defending herself. Of standing up to who she believed deserved every lashing that he got.

Of course she’s not thinking about where she’s going, or where she could possibly go. She has no friends and no family outside of her parents in their shabby run-down home, and her grandmother who lived nearby. But those are the first places they’ll look. They will be looking for her, she knows. She knows there’s no way she’ll still have a job. They’ll send for shrinks and psychiatrists. They’ll lock her up, put her away. She should be terrified of what will happen to her, but she saves the terror for later. For now, she revels in how good she feels. There’s no way she wants this elation to be marred by fear or regret.

The next second, however, she’s being snatched up by strong arms; a man who probably shouldn’t be able to hold her, with her feet up off the ground, but he can and he has. The breath is stolen from Eureka’s lungs and those bright wide eyes of hers finally find a face. She struggles to begin with, but soon gives up when she realises her efforts are absolutely futile. She should be afraid, but she isn’t. Not yet. She’d got far too much adrenaline running through her veins to be afraid.

“Who the **** are you?!” she yells. It’s not a screech or a squeal. It’s a bold question, born from irritation that he should be so obtuse. She could spit on him, given half the chance. But she doesn’t. Her lips curl back in a snarl.

“I’m not a little girl. Let me go you creep!” she demands it. She doesn’t struggle. She holds the man’s eye, though her body is coiled and is as tight as a spring. Tense, and ready to thrash. Her voice bubbles in her throat, trapped; she’ll scream. She will, if he doesn’t let her go.

She was feisty! He couldn't help but smile. This little thing was something else. Chad must have had her by 100 lbs or so yet she acted like he was just a temporary obstacle that she would figure out how to overcome. And she didn't even tell him her name! Too rich. He could tell in her mind, that it just wasn't necessary. She was already mentally past this point in time and just had to quickly figure out how.

Behind her though rushed footsteps. Someone had been on her tail and Chad's interference had allowed them to catch up. Rounding the corner a man wearing black flats for shoes, navy blue pants a light blue shirt with a dark tie and a patch in the shape of a badge. Must be a security guard of some kind he thought. Out of breath he looked relieved that his chase was over. "Thanks for stopping her", he said "I will take it from here". Putting Eureka down, the guard moved in with zip ties. "I called the police, they will be here shortly. This girl murdered a man for no reason in a store and she must be brought to justice".

"She will get what she deserves", Chad stated as he allowed the guard to move toward the both of them, "And so will you". Grabbing the guard, the progenitor of the Worthington Lineage bit deeply within the neck of the now terrified man. His eyes rolled into the back of his head as his life's blood flowed out of him. As he passed out Chad stopped, ensuring that he would not die, cleaning up the wound. This man will wake up tomorrow dazed, but will remember nothing. It was took quick, there is no way he would have been able to process how close he was to death by the hands of our kind.

Now back to the girl..... Incredibly she was still there. She didn't run, not that it would have gotten her very far, but why not? Was she in shock?

The world was catching up with Reka. Strangely, it was the rent-a-cop who rounded the corner that scared her more than the man who held her so tightly in his grip. One threatened to kill her, but what was death, anyway? A stepping stone to something better, maybe. The security guard represented reality: police, jail cells, bail, money that neither she nor her parents had. Would there even be bail? She had killed a man. She wasn’t a minor anymore.

****, she thought. What have I done?

Strangely, incredibly, it was the thought of being caught that scared her more than the thought of being killed. Even if she were forced to run, at least life would be a little more exciting than a low wage and a boring job with ridiculously snotty ******* customers acting as if she were just the scum beneath their feet. She’d get away from that trailer, she’d get away from the drab colours. Maybe she’d die in the cold on the streets, but at least she could say she died independently.

If she even made it that far.

As the guard approached, Eureka could see her future blooming in front of her eyes. Where her life had felt like a cage, now she would be literally living in a cage. Maybe it would be a death sentence. Do they do those in Canada? She was so ignorant that she didn’t even know the laws in her own country. Maybe if it was a death sentence, it wouldn’t be too far away. Or maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe her life would be colourful. Like that TV show.

The images of her future popped like a balloon, however, as soon as the larger mysterious male bit into the guard’s neck. A short cry escaped her lips and she took a hasty step backward. Her arms ached where she had been held. Maybe they were bruised. But she didn’t run. She stayed, watching. Like people who can’t help gaping at a car accident, Eureka couldn’t help but watch this scene unfold. The guard sank to the ground. The other male turned to her.

“Is he dead?!”

She asked, her eyes wide and her mouth twisted into an incredulous grimace. The corner of her mouth twitched. She was afraid. Terrified. But she still didn’t move.

“What are you?!”

"No, he is alive because I allow it to be so. This is the same with you." There was no time for small talk though, more footsteps were racing toward them and Chad was in no mood to deal with whoever it was. "Jumping across the street and on to the rooftop of the building there he bolted away from the area, stopping about 3 blocks away hidden from the view of the passers below. Setting her down again, he looked her over. She didn't try to fight, she didn't look scared and she didn't try to get away. How odd he thought. Who is this girl exactly? And why did he care one way or another about her. "You did see what I did to that man below didn't you?" he posed. "What makes you think I won't do the same thing to you?" "To me you are nothing but a meal, or a toy. So why is it that you seem more calm now than when I found you running with your hands covered in blood?" His questions rang out, but her answers were slow. Apparently there was no rush to answer, but instead she asked again "Who are you?" Her eyes pierced deeply into his soul as if she was trying to read him like a book. Or maybe he was a puzzle she was piecing together. As if he was something she would just figure out and everything would be normal again.

The massive vampire brooded for a minute. He was more lost than she was. Who was she? Again, why does she matter? But do these questions themselves even matter. The fact was, every second he spent with her, the more she did seem to matter. Clearing his throat he said "I am Chad Worthington III, progenitor of a lineage of great and powerful monsters. Now tell me who you are, and I don't mean your name. I need to know you. Because your life is going to change tonight. Tonight you will know one of two things. You will either know what it is to die, or you will learn what it is to be immortal. Either way, this adventure of yours will depend on you."

One second they were in an alleyway, the next they were on a roof. Eureka was mildly aware of the hands that held her, the way she was given no choice and snatched from her wits. It took her a few seconds to catch up, the entire journey a blur. Her stomach rolled and for a second she had to stand with her hands on her knees, gasping for breath. It was all overwhelming. Regardless of what she may have thought before, she now knew, for a fact, that this man was not human. Not one bit. She was vaguely aware of the questions being asked of her, and had to peer up at the male—Chad, he said his name was—through her short fringe.

What made her think he wouldn’t do the same to her? “You would have done it already, if you were going to do the same to me,” she said. And it wasn’t the same, was it? He said the guy down in that alleyway wasn’t dead. So what exactly was it that was done to him? Her heart flipped in her chest. Now, she felt the pressure. She knew that this man would have no trouble killing her. She didn’t think she’d be able to slash into his neck with a broken bottle and get away with it. This guy was different.

“I’m not calm, I’m ******* terrified!” Eureka said, her face again twisted into an expression that didn’t quite adhere to any one emotion. “I wasn’t calm before, either. I was full of adrenaline and I was running away because I just probably killed a man because he got on my nerves. I snapped. Okay? I was just working and then I got angry and I snapped, and I ran, and now I’m here with you. What do you want me to say? I’m nobody. I’m a nobody,” she ranted, slowly straightening up as she answered him. He didn’t want her name, so she didn’t give it to him. And they’re on a ******* rooftop. How was she going to run anywhere now?

“I really would prefer to just not die, though,” she added. Not begging, but throwing her preference out there, anyway.
