Security Camera alerts, IC or OOC information?

From what I know of the situation, the Paladin went into a secured place and was caught on camera.

If this is true, why didn't the Security Camera give them the ID? Is it actually just a percentage chance that it will? I don't use Security Cameras personally, my knowledge is pretty lacking in this area.

If a security camera is placed by the owner in a private place, it will give the ID.

I think in this case it was a public shop owned by a character.

So basically Person1 with the camera saw Verne, thought he looked somewhat familiar, and brought it to Person2 who could confirm/deny the identity. Considering Verna died quite publicly, it's pretty likely that an obituary was posted in the newspaper, and obituaries tend to have associated photos. It's really not a leap to say that the person glanced at the obituary, saw Verne, and then spotted him on the camera and asked about it. Once Person2 confirmed the ID, Person1 would know it was Verne, leading to ID shared with Person1.

Is that how it went down? If so, it's perfectly legit imo.

That's exactly how it went down.

But the player is saying Player 2 is crossing and sharing IDs without permission.

That would depend on how Person2 acquired the ID.

If Person2 had the ID because of their IC interactions with Verne, it's perfectly legit. If Person2 had the ID because of OOC, then no, not legit. Example: Nix has a few people on her ID list that were given OOCly to me (Grey when she was human, Cornelius, I think someone(s) else) for item transfers and OOC help. If Nix were to share those IDs, I'd considering that crossing on my part.

The way the people that received Verne's ID is perfectly legit. If it had been through OOC means, then no go. From my understanding - with everything I've read and been told - this wasn't an OOC matter and Person 1 is simply claiming crossing when there was none to be had.

Person 2 was very closely related to Verne ICly.

I guess if I were in that situation, I might not call someone a "crosser", but mostly because I try to avoid that word. I would definitely be frustrated and question whether it's a legitimate way to go about things.

The Wiki seems to imply that if you don't have a human's ID, you don't recognize them when you're standing in the same square with them, let alone over a video feed, out of all of the people that walk past a public store's security camera all day. It implies some level of recognition to pull one face out of all of those to bring to someone else for verification.

Whereas if you already had the ID, you'd recognize them, or if it was a camera in a private place where you've authorized every person that walks past to enter, suddenly someone you don't know shows up, and that'd make you recognize them if you saw them elsewhere. I guess I can see cases being made both ways, is all.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. If this works mechanic-wise, any vampire walking past a security camera in a public area is potentially violating Masq and raising the Alert Level if their identity is known to even one human. Cass will be having a lot of pizzas delivered.

The person walking passed the security camera isn't a vampire. He's a Paladin. A public figure one at that. One that had a public funeral. One that was dating a vampire, who was the childe of the person that brought the security camera to said childe's sibling who was very closely related to the Paladin when they were a human.

It's not so much the breaking of the masquerade...so much as the Player of Verne shouldn't be calling 'Crosser'.

I think the mechanic still works for the masquerade. If the human friend of a vampire is willing to share the ID to another human just because they popped up on a security camera, they really aren't friends to begin with and that would be a trickling effect of masq breach. Human finding out from another human about vampires, Human friend spilling the beans leading up to the vampire responsible for having a human friend. All in all, keep the masquerade..don't have human friends..cuz you can't trust those guys.
