First, that sting music seemed wildly and hilariously unfitting for a guy simply popping his head into frame. I'm sorry, were you trying to jump scare us? If so, why? Valid question, really.
Back when this was shown, there was some debate over the light saber laser guard. Personally I think the cross guard could work if we know for sure that there is a stable alloy that can deflect energy without sustaining damage. I would have gone with a beam emitter on one side and a receiver on the other end to sustain a 90 degree beam complete with corners, or the same except duplicated and set on either side of the main energy beam, in the even that a light saber's own energy beam would become unstable if crossed with another beam of its own energy. Show me a material a light saber can't put a dent in, and I'll say "that's your cross guard, but what are the beams for?"
The robot using the ball as a means of locomotion is just goofy. Its design does not look optimal for locomotion, whether slow or fast, or even coordinated. I just see that and I think, "that ball could roll anywhere, and the droid part of the droid could roll anywhere on that ball". Even with a visualization to show how it's supposed to work, it doesn't look to me like it holds water. Just look at it! And the little man on my shoulder is saying, "that's what they're going for, you know". In a bad way.
We have grown to recognize this sort of stuff, both in the audience and as movie makers (I have no experience with special effects or cinematography or filmography, or anything related to movie stuff). Four of the films were released in the old-timey 70's-to-90's period, now it's 2015, and I've seen enough films in my time to judge that we've really come into our own in the movie industry, professionally and knowledgeably. Enough to make me say, "what are you doing here? This is a mistake, this is potentially what we'd laugh at when watching the older films thinking, 'what were they thinking', I hope you know what you're doing".
I'm certainly looking forward to the new movie, but I'm not impressed with the teaser. As far as teasers go, I feel like I can say I've seen better.

Lightsabers can be deflected by vibroblades fitted with cortosis-weave, if I'm not mistaken.
Personally I think these new movies will suck. Well, the ones under direction of Jar Jar Abrams anyway. He's ignore all subtlety and go for plain good vs evil, with too many action scenes and a bunch of kid heroes.
They should have been taking inspiration from Darth Bane, Traya, or Revan. Now those were quality stories.

Re: Star Wars fans only!
I am not a fan in the true sense of the word. i saw the first three.. then the one with jarjar.. and had no desire to see the others.
However, this is a follow sequel and not a prequel so I would like to see it.. as I enjoyed the first three immensely.
That said.. I thought the same thing as Cotter Mun.. a ball robot? Really? And i am not an automation engineer - the husband is.. so I know how stupid that is.. and when he saw the ball and turned away and went back to his gps camera, and didnt other watching the rest.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the ball robot. This is science fiction, and they know way more about engineering and science than we do in this fictional reality.

Not mistaken, but also not true. All of the lore that backed up this statement was thrown out the window by Disney.Mooncalf wrote:Lightsabers can be deflected by vibroblades fitted with cortosis-weave, if I'm not mistaken.
The OT was incredibly straight forward. Jedi vs. Sith/ Good vs. Evil. If we are being honest with ourselves the movies werent thought provoking lessons in nuance. The OT was pretty much straight action wrapped around an amazing story, something which is pretty much right down Abrams ally.Mooncalf wrote:Personally I think these new movies will suck. Bane is by far my favorite SW character, and I agree Him or Traya would make for excellent movies, but not for continuing the saga. (Left Revan out because I truly cant stand him.) Those stories dont really show us what happens with the Empire. (IE are the rebels going to be able to seize control? Will the galaxy be thrown into something similar to the "Thrawn Era" from the EU?) Those questions need to be answered to setup the climate for the additional movies Disney plans releasing. (Because so far the plan is to do the same with the SW Universe as is being done with the Marevel one.)Mooncalf wrote:They should have been taking inspiration from Darth Bane, Traya, or Revan.
