If you want ideas for your characters or need to get to know your characters a bit more...or need help making up a consistent storyline for your character with minor characters
Google writing prompts/plots/themes.
There are even books in your library. I read a lot of fictional writing resource books because I like to write and I want my mind to be opened up to all possibilities of characters. Writing prompts are good because you throw your character into a situation and have to figure out what they would do/how they would do it.
But yeah, no one is going to outright feed you ideas for your characters, not because we're selfish and we don't want to, but because they're your characters. You know them better than we do no matter how many times we read their CSs or read every thread that they've been in up to date. There's all their private thoughts you have access to and we don't. You know which plot would work for whichever character.
You just gotta sit down and be like..."What do I want to do with my character(s)?" We can't write them, only you can.
So, go research some ideas for plots on Google. There are RP resource sites out there that can help you as well.

I'll try the prompt idea... It can't be any worse than those dorky plot generators I found. I mean some of those ideas are pretty bad. They are about as pointless and helpful as the ol "if a fly is going this way at this speed and a train is going this way at this speed how long till the fly is splattered on the train?" Question.
Still though, general ideas like the kind Niko mentioned helped a little, gave me things to consider... For those I need people though because as I said... HATE solos... I can never get my mind into writing them.

Some of them are going to be dorky on purpose.
Some of them are going to be a simple as: your character is going to the grocery store because there's a big dinner at the house. Describe what they're getting. Describe how they're feeling about the dinner. Write how they react once they've realized they left their wallet in the car or at the house.
Prompts are they just for you to get know your characters so you know every facade of them.
Like I know Ishaq's reaction will differ from...Mikey's reaction and that's because....blah blah blah.

Re: I just don't know what to do... Can you help?
Generally what I do when I want threads is come up with some specific goals for my characters and their plot development. For example, Remington went on hiatus for 4 months. I had to come up with an IC explanation for that. I decided that rather than just coming up with some kind of reasoning and leaving it at that, I'd turn it into a storyline, and bring it to Harper Rock so to speak.
That particular plot is going to be playing out shortly.
But I think as a general rule if you can come up with a specific idea, you can get people to thread with you. Plotting, in my book, tends to come in the form of "I want to do xyz with my character, what do you want to do with yours?" So each person gets something out of the thread.
From there, it's just a matter of hammering out a couple specifics so that you have a basic story to follow. I try not to 'overplot', or get every single little detail decided beforehand, because that tends to make me just wanna say 'well what's the point?'.
I also tend to prefer live chat RP because, like Lach said, it does usually flow better. You get more RPP for it, and it usually doesn't take as long (Plus it gives me my immediate fix).
If your issue is that people only want to RP with you in Y!M, then don't. My messenger is 99% OOC. I only really RP there with people I trust. Most of the time, the stuff we RP gets posted on the forum too.
Rejecting the idea of RPing on Y!M might lose you an RP partner, but honestly, if they don't want people OOC knowing they RP with you...well that's kinda shady anyway?
I dunno, it seems like an odd situation.

Re: I just don't know what to do... Can you help?
Like I said its not so much the platform it's the result. I understand that yim works for certain scenes and things - I tend to use mine as text on their cells - but for plot ideas, especially when I'm using yim though my phone because health issues make it difficult to be in a physical position to use a computer... It takes a LOT longer (yim app on iPhone doesn't allow horizontal typing anymore.) I have to do everything with one finger. Plus there's the autocorrect fails. Small things I don't mind. Plots are annoying that way plus I can't copy and paste.
But going back to the main point, my problem is when the person I'm RPing with stops mid RP and then vanished for months or weeks on yim but continues to play on the grid or in the chats. They basically get what they want and ditch me. Then my characters are left hanging like "is this going to happen?!" And then they either move the character on without mine and pretend they don't even know my char or letting me know or kill them off and it's like WTF!?
If they came to me and said "I'm just not feeling it lets pretend it didn't happen" then fine... I can do that. But no... They don't give me that certacy. And I'm the one with the stuck char.

Sounds like you need to stop RPing with that person.

You aren't the first to say that and I've pretty much stopped... Just need people to fill in the positions that have been vacated.

Just ask people.
Check out to see who is consistently RPing on a daily basis and ask them to plot with you.

The plot usually being the problem in most cases past the initial meet up part of the thread.
