The warrior and the dead defender

Mason stared the paladin down. She recognized them, they'd met before when she was one of them. It wasn't common she worked with others before in that attempted eradication of the vampire race. But that didn't mean there was never any interactions with others like her, hunters. He wasn't alone. A few others with him, but he was the only one who could see her for what she was. It was funny, actually. He barely recognized her, but he spotted the way she moved instead. Different body, different clothes, same gait, same weapons, same words, same eyes. Different type of creature.
None of them raised their weapons yet, but they were all ready to. He addressed her by name with spit in his voice. "Mason."
She kept her eyes on him, gritting her teeth. She knew she was just like him. In truth, she didn't want to kill him. But she also didn't know what would happen if she turned him, that was not a risk she could take. Even after turning she went on a rampage against vampires. Refused to accept her state in life. It was only after death that she began to accept that she was a vampire.
"It's me, not by choice, but it's me." She knew it was pointless. He was as devoted to the cause as she was. She was pretty sure the only reason he hadn't attacked yet was bewilderment."I got turned, wasn't happy about it. But wasn't anything I could do to change it. If I thought I could have, probably would have killed my sire."
"Would have? What about now." He pressed.
She sighed, "I accepted the difference. Not at first. But I died, saw the shadow realm myself. Learned more patience. This is just what I am now."
"A what indeed." He scoffed. She didn't react, she knew how he felt. She knew what he was thinking too. She had one hope. "This wouldn't end well for you if you fight me. I've gotten far stronger than I once was. And you haven't grown nearly enough. I outclass you and your hunters in every regard. I know every trick, every move, you could use on me. Even my equipment is better than yours." she showed only utter confidence, the paladin felt his powers blocked before he even considered starting. He narrowed his eyes. Mind Block. Telepaths trick.
"I'm not on the base path anymore. You won't be able to prepare against it all." She commented. She might not have the ease of access to thoughts a natural telepath would have, but she did have experience with paladins like him.
"We can't let you live." He said with a grimace as his hand gripped the gun at his side. The hunters were equally determined, but so much less prepared.
A deformed creature emerged as Mason lunged herself backwards. The creature charged the hunters, "I know. So I'm sorry." her face was somber as the faebeast took a hunter and injured another before the paladin locked into a fight with it. Mason's Angel 7 was in her hands unleashing a hail of bullets into the remaining to hunters.
The fight wouldn't last long. Her aim was good, and while the paladin, even de-powered, might live against a fade beast. It wasn't just the fadebeast against him. As they fought, she spoke, "I really am sorry. I won't turn you like I was. You'd probably hate it as much as I did."
She sent several shots into him as he fought, clearly not enjoying it but not willing to let him win as the creature began to tear into him. His gun hand was turn from him and she killed the fadebeast before it ended his life. He was struggling to breath, fear and hate both clear on his face as his blurry eyes made her out as she came closer and sat beside him. "I am going to kill you. I can't have you coming after me, there are people that I have to protect now."
"You-" He struggled choking, "Should be dead."
She smiled, but not with joy, "You're right." she raised her weapon and put a bullet through his head.
