Here on Path of the Vampire, the focus is on roleplay. Ideally, this means jumping into roleplay at your soonest possible convenience. Below are some guidelines, tips, and ideas for the best way to do that!

1. Any content you did not write should be in quote tags. This includes quotations by other posters on the forum, lyrics to songs, lines of poetry not written by yourself, etc. To do this use this code:

Code: Select all

[quote] All your lyrics and anything that isn't your words, including in game notifications, go here[/quote]
2. Posts may not contain graphic sexual content.

Alluding to it is fine, but the moment you start describing it you're going to get in trouble. If you can't figure out how to do that without posting it, because there are parts after? Use a fade-to-black.

The only part of the forum allowing for roleplay of an adult nature is the adult roleplay forum.

3. All posts must follow the Canon.

Canon can be found in the WIKI and you can also ask questions Over Here.

For a quick 'jump into it' guide, see this page.

4. Do not write another playable character's actions without permission. Additionally, do not write your character as having or using powers they don't have on grid.

In the case of writing about things which occurred on grid (such as a fight), if an event is substantiated by grid action (such as you writing your character landing a hit on an enemy after they landed a hit on grid), this is considered acceptable. When in doubt, use the RP Dice Roller or Roleplay Action Rolls to determine if your character can accomplish certain tasks.

5. Be sure to abide the forum rules.

Which can be found here

6. Regarding roleplay tags and special forums.

The [OPEN] tag can be used to gain bonus RPP, however a thread marked as such (in the title) should be truly open to all characters.

The [ARES] tag can be used to gain bonus RPP. The ARES system has a chance to generate a random roleplay prompt after every post made to a thread. This system is in place to add a sense of spontaneity to threads.

The Hardcore forum has its own set of rules.

RP Dice Roller
(Clickable link)
The RP Dice Roller is a tool for roleplayers to use if and when they choose to. No-one can force you to use this function and you must be signed in in-game to use it.

Players should agree in advance if the RP dice roller is to be used when writing a thread and if such an agreement is made, all players involved should be prepared to abide by the outcome of any rolls made.

For further information on what the RP dice roller is and how to use it, please go to the wiki article here.

RP ETIQUETTE AND YOU
When it comes to roleplay, two important things to think about are communication and collaboration. By reaching out to other players and sharing ideas, you’ll find all sorts of writing opportunities and developmental chances to flesh out more stories. It’s important to establish earlier contact, so that you can openly discuss any difficulties (be it creative or otherwise) along the way. The concept of when in doubt, ask someone definitely applies to roleplay; if you or your writing partner(s) cannot come to a conclusion, be sure to ask one of our developers, one of our moderators, or a storyteller. We’re all happy to help.

Consideration is also something to keep in mind. If you play a vampire, pressuring someone into siring a character under you by repeatedly asking them can make others uncomfortable. Writers reserve the right to do as they please with their character so long as it does not impose on another player or break the rules (see: godmodding/powerplaying). If someone does not stop, report to a moderator.

Remember, as a player, you come first. You do not have to interact with anyone who has made you uncomfortable. It is not crossing if you choose to not interact with someone. Real life comes first. When in doubt, assume that something has come up that they need to attend to rather than assume they are purposely ignoring you, the RP, or your character.

WHEN YOU ARE ROLEPLAYING...

If you have decided to join an [Open] thread or already established roleplay, try to avoid significant change to the theme or mood without permission of the first poster. It’s considered rude and be sure to remember to ask about post order!

Share attention. No one likes being ignored in a thread, try to give everyone's characters their time to shine and don’t try to be the main individual doing everything.

When you are making your character, whether new or old, avoid making a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Characters are not perfect, but they shouldn’t have nothing going for them, either. Take your time when you’re planning one out. Think of their long term goals, their short term goals. Consider why they want to do those things. Again, ask questions. Why are they coming to Harper Rock, what brings them there? How do they feel about politics?

Thinking of your character as if they are an actual person may help develop them to be more well rounded.
Also, do not cross OOC and IC information (just because you know what’s going on with the character doesn’t mean yours would.) The same thing goes with if one of your characters knows something, your others would not. Try not to have them be in contact and give them some degree of separation. A good way to do this is try to play different character types with differing opinions - make it so they can’t stand each other and wouldn’t want to speak to each other.

IF YOU JOIN A GAMEMASTER THREAD...

A gamemaster is an individual (or individuals) who act as an organizer, officiant in regards to rules, and moderator for a specific event. They are the go-to person when you need help or don’t understand what’s going on in a gamemaster thread. On Path of the Vampire, we have a Storyteller group who dedicate their time to make things more enjoyable for writers. They nudge the plot along when needed. The rules will be established before anything starts so that everyone can be on the same page.

If you get involved in a GM thread, please be sure to:
  • ASK THE GM IN CHARGE.

When in doubt, ask. This is a good way to make sure that what you’d like to do in the thread is okay and will not alter the theme of the GM thread too much. We want you to have fun, but we don’t want anyone else to feel as if they aren’t.
  • WHEN YOU USE THE ROLEPLAY BATTLES...

Do you want to use weapons, do you want to cripple on the grid and kill them in the roleplay? If so, how will they die, what wounds will they receive? Do you want to use powers, or is it strictly weapons, is it powers only, etc?
  • IF LITTLE DETAILS MATTER...

Be sure to write them in. Does your character have a record in Harper Rock and you're writing with a cop character? Feel free to mention it. Is there a piece your character never fails to leave the house with? Mention it. It's little details that make your story, but it also helps cut down on confusion later if something is introduced later.
THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF ROLEPLAY

PLEASE DO:
  • COMMUNICATE.

As stated above, communication both IC and OOC is needed for proper roleplay. Even if it’s just minor to touch bases. This will save trouble in the long run so no one has any hard feelings.
  • CONSIDER OTHERS

Not everyone has the same reactions to things and although there is a PG-13 limit on the site (unless you pay the $10 fee for access to the adult board), content and trigger warnings are always good to consider. Topics like drug use, rape, suicide and murder even if implied can be distressing to others and they should be marked at the beginning of your thread so that others can avoid them. Yes, this is a vampire roleplay site, but again, consider your fellow writers!

Another thing to consider is that while drastically long posts are cool, but not everyone can do them all the time. If you are going to post something long, be sure to give the others a heads up and remind them that they don’t have to match your word count. On that same hand, be sure to give your writing partner enough information to be able to use and build upon. No one likes to have little to work with no matter the context.
  • Remember: YOU COME FIRST.

You do not have to write or engage with anyone that you do not wish to, especially if you become uncomfortable.
  • BE PATIENT

Real life > Roleplay. When in doubt, assume that something has come up that they need to attend to rather than assume they are purposely ignoring you, the RP, or your character.
  • PUT UP A ROLEPLAY REQUEST

If you have an idea that you want to pursue, post it in the Roleplay OOC Planning and see if you get any interest. There’s something out there for everyone.
PLEASE DON’T

  • FORCE OTHERS

If someone is uncomfortable with something, please do not pressure them into writing something. It’s rude and it’s inconsiderate to writers.
  • DISAPPEAR WITHOUT WARNING

Things happen in life and we all understand. If you can give someone heads up, please do so that your writing partner can know what’s going on. You don’t have to be specific, a simple, “hey, I’m not going to be here for a while” is perfectly fine! When you get back, settle things with other players on how to move forward.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

HAVE FUN.

We’re all here for one reason or another, and we all enjoy to roleplay. It makes for a good community when we all have that in mind. When in doubt, message one of our moderators, a developer or one of our storytellers: we'll be more than happy to help you!
