[The account of how Lani came to be.]

She sat with her hands folded in her lap, fingers tapping against her knuckles. The office hosted two other figures, a human girl and a ghostly vampire. The girl was named Arna, the local journalist, and she had come to talk with the vampire, Zephyrus, about a crude comment he had made about something she wrote. Lani already knew how this would play out, she just had to witness it. She made her own blog just a while ago, posting information no one else could get without having people on the inside. She had taken the job as Zephyrs' apprentice, writing doing notes, filing papers, and doing miniscule errands that wouldn't make a difference if she took her entire life time to finish. But the reward was situations like this, the bits of conversations that no one would know existed without being there.

Lani hid a smile behind the back of her hand, gazing down at the notepad below her. There were only a few lines full of writing, which told her that she should more attention to what was being spoken, but she was distracted by her boss. He was acting a little strange, fiddling with the papers on his desk, as if he were growing anxious from what they were talking about. Lani stared at his face briefly from her corner before glancing over at Arna. Her face was red with anger and spittle exploded from her mouth like a holey eater bottle. Lani figured that this wasn't the problem, since vampire didn't have to be too concerned about their hygiene. But maybe it was how she was speaking.

She watched their nonverbal communication for a while before writing down what they were saying. That's when she realized the problem. Arna was wearing very...exposing clothes, as in most of her skin was showing. It was warm weather but that was no excuse to wear a crop top with a low neckline and leggings that hugged her thighs. She also wore a cross necklace that was tight around her neck. Like that's gonna save you, thought Lani. But she didn't say it aloud.

"Miss Copeland," said Zephyrus finally. It ceased all talking and Arna just glared at the vampire, showing no fear that Lani knew was hidden inside. You had to be scared of them, they could easily take your life away. But I looked like she was using the knowledge that her race outnumbered theirs by thousands, maybe even millions. Lani was never to sure these days. But it wouldn't matter when the fangs came out, reaching for your neck, never hesitating to draw blood that would quench their thirst.

Lani shivered.

"I understand that my opinion must have bothered you but you must understand that my opinion is my opinion. I have the right to share it anywhere, any time, and any how I would like."

Arna shook her head slowly. "If you wish to speak nonsense, at least speak with proper gram-"

Two fist slammed hard against the surface of his desk, making the two watchers jump in surprise. But it was less surprised, having guessed that he would give this reaction in response. No one liked a know-it-all. "If you insist on speaking to me this way I must ask you to leave, Miss Copeland!"

Lani was writing furiously in the mean time, a smile playing on her lips. She was trying hard not to laugh. Arna, on the other hand, was showing her first signs of fear. Her face was flushed and her eyes kept darting towards and type of exit, window or door. Most humans tended to act primitively in these daunting situations. Lani herself was getting a little nervous, seeing a glint of red in her bosses' eyes. She had never seen something like that in a vampire before, although she hasn't see many vampires to begin with. But those she has seen tried to persuade her to give up blood. She refused everytime and was nimble enough to escape unharmed.

Arna stood her ground. "Promise to never comment on anything I've written again and I will leave without another word."

"But you approached me[/j]."

"And you commented to me."

They both held a long glare before Zephyrus took a deep breath and relaxed a few notches. Lani rested her pen on her notepad and rubbed her temple, clearly tired of all of this. She stretched slightly and then stood, gazing at them both exasperatedly. "Miss Copeland, we promise never to bother you again but you admit that your writing was something very argumentative and any can respond freely, however they would like. You're clearly not thinking for statements are created to be responded to."

Lani nodded after a beat and excused herself. She heard shuffling behind her and heard someone sniffle.

"I just-why do men have to do things like that?"

Lani didn't respond for a moment. "Everyone is different, do target millions based off of one person."

Arms followed Lani down the stairs."But don't you see that they're all so similar? It's unbelievable-"

Lani stopped so suddenly that Arna nearly ran into her but she side stepped just before the impact. Arms grabbed the railing before she could stumble down the next flight of stairs. She looked at Lani expectantly.

She held up one finger. "I swear to God, if what I've ever said in your vicinity ever pops up on your newsletter, your employers will never hear of Arna Gertrude Copeland...again." Lani stared into her eyes for effect before continuing down the stairwell.

At the end she sucked her teeth, remembering that the bottom door was locked. She stared at the door, as if it would unlock magically as she thought about another exit that would let Arna leave without having to encounter anymore vampires for a while, at least on the campus. She then turned around. "We're going to have to try another way."

But someone blocked her path. Lani studied the woman. "...um, please move."

She tried to brush past but Arna grabbed her arm. "You little b-"

Lani twisted Arna's arm so hard that she let out a cry, enabling her to escape. Why didn't I suspect that she was a vampire too? Damn, she thought as she rushed up the stairwell. But something grabbed her leg and pulled her down. Before she could react her chin hit against the edge of a stair and pain flashed through her body. Something dragged her down. "Arna, it's not that serious-stop!"

Arna snickered behind her. "Oh, I'm not going to give you the luxury of a second life, sweetie...no, you're going to hurt so bad that you're going to want to die."

She blacked out as a foot stomped into her side.

When she woke her body was aching with pain. She didn't dare move in case Arna was nearby. The whole room was dark and she realized that they already locked up the building. Damn...why did she have to do that? It wasn't that serious at all-oW, she thought, rubbing her leg. There were a lot of gashes and blood but she felt no punctures. She tried to get up but it was useless. The best she could hope for was calling out to the guards.

"Help!" she cried. At first Lani didn't hear anything but then she shuffling upstairs. She banged her fist weakly against the stairs, trying to make noise. It was a feeble attempt. She heard footsteps but it wasas more than two, which worried her. She was about to try to hide deeper in the shadows, since the exit door was letting off a little light, when she saw four figures appear at the top of the stairs: vampires.

She closed her eyes as the burglars flew onto her hungrily.

Good thing they showed mercy and gave her a new life. She Awoke without a headache, though, hearing many voices. She screamed once, overwhelmed, until the realized that she could Hear them. They sileced their thoughts and explained that she was telepathic.
