Zara stared at the old, green, rusty dumpster for a moment to find the best foothold. Finding one she put one booted foot on it, put her dirty hands on the top edge and launched herself upward landing on top of the full, brown plastic bags. Flinching with pain she stooped there looking around furtively…listening…looking like some wild animal. Dirt smudges on her face, red straggly hair, her nose twitching as she smelled food. Ripping the bag open and reaching inside without hesitation, she pulled out bits of leftover food that the restaurant had thrown away. It was dark in the alleyway, so when she felt something interesting she held it up close to her eyes and examined it carefully. Part of a chicken, she nodded to herself and smiled, her blue/green eyes sparkling with anticipation. Tearing at it with her teeth Zara stopped to glance around once more peering into the darkness then continued wolfing the rest down.
Finished eating she jumped down a bit gingerly and sat against the wall to think on her next move. Her face was bruised and she knew she must have some broken ribs – if nothing worse from the guys that had happened to jump her when they had found her alone.
She knew there was a place that the public was able to go into – she just wasn’t sure if she could get into it at this time of night or not. It wasn’t totally dark yet, maybe it was still open and she could sneak in. Some sort of church or temple, but could she get in and would it be any safer?
Standing up she brushed off her old, insulated leather jacket that she had the opportunity of stealing and her blue jeans. Thankfully the jacket was quite warm – and a bit more protection against any violence. Running her fingers though her hair as well as she could, she walked to the corner of the alley and looked out. If there was a time to head out – now was as good a time as any.
