Birds Of A Feather

Lagoon green colored fingertips tapped the top of the counter as Birdee leaned over it, skimming the latest issue of 'Rise.' She wasn't necessarily looking for a new tattoo, but she wasn't not looking for one either. If something stuck out to her and inspired her, Birdee wasn't against putting it on her body. Plus, there wasn't really anything going on up here anyways at the moment. Everyone seemed to be digging the new DJ that was playing in the club tonight. “I'm going to get a drink.” Birdee told the guy that was stocking the shelves with all sorts of nifty things; like bongs, gum, papers, and everything a drug user might need for their recreational uses.

Birdee slapped the magazine together, then cast it aside under the counter before stepping away from the counter. “Shouldn't be gone more than a few minutes, but it's dry as a desert in this place.” Birdee knew that drinking alcohol would make her even thirstier, but she was so god damn bored and the DJ sounded pretty wicked. Not something she wanted to miss out on completely. She didn't think Satine would mind too much if she took a fifteen. Birdee was just about due for one anyways-in about half an hour.

Black ankle length boots hit the floor and left an echo as Birdee moved down the stairs to where the club was at. The woman pulled at her hair, freeing the feather style earrings she wore from the clutches of the mess on her head that was tangling due to her not running a brush through it since about four hours ago. Not that she cared about how she looked, but every time she turned her head, the damn feathers yanked on her earlobes a little and that was getting annoying.

The club was throbbing with life as Birdee made it down to the placed decorated from top to bottom with blue. People were gathered on the dance floor, a couple different groups sitting on random seats and couches, and more at the bar. People seemed to be everywhere, but that was typical in a club scene. “Alright then. We can do this.” Birdee said as her hands went to the belt at the skirt she was wearing and pulled out a stick of gum that she had stuffed between the belt and the fabric of the skirt. She unwrapped it and placed it between her teeth and chewed it in as she bobbed and weaved around people. The gum wouldn't take affect for about ten minutes, but by the time she got to the bar, ordered the drink and got it-her way back trip would be stellar. Hopefully.

One of the regulars nodded to Birdee and then hopped over in her direction and started dancing, trying to get Birdee to dance along with her. She laughed, waved a hand and shook her head before going back to focusing on trying to get to the bar without bumping into anyone. Or tripping into them, being touched by them, slammed into them. Basically, she wanted to avoid any and all contact with anyone, because she couldn't lose her **** again. No way would Satine keep her here.

She stuck on the black carpet, because it seemed to be the less trafficked area in the club. Like people knew they should stay off it, for some reason she didn't know. When Birdee saw the DJ playing, she gave the guy a nod and wave of her hand, then two thumbs up, letting him know his **** was sick, before she moved to the 'rabbit-hole.' The fancy title given to the bar inside the Wonderland Club. “Bees knees. Two, actually. I'm so ******* thirsty. Is the heat turned way up tonight?” Birdee asked the tender as she found a seat on the black covered stool and tapped her nervous, slightly shaky fingers against the gray colored surface of the bar. Her tongue pressed the gum to the roof of her mouth, securing it there like it did at least one hundred times before. He just gave her a glance that seemed sympathetic to her cause, but Birdee knew the look. The one that implied nothing had changed and that she was the only one that noticed any difference in temperature, or anything else that wasn't actually going on. Both yellow colored mixtures were put in a fancy cocktail glass, and pushed her way, Birdee slapping down a twenty and telling the guy to keep the change for a tip.

The first drink was gone within seconds. All it took was her tipping her head back and three gulps and the lemon-honey flavored drink was gone. Birdee set the glass down and shook her head from side to side as her eyes closed, feeling a small jolt of life coarse through her as the gum kicked in.”Best Bees knee's ever!” Birdee slapped the counter as she grabbed the other drink and sipped it. She turned her back to the bar and slid off the stool. The DJ was mid-song in another sick beat when Birdee got into the beat of it and started dancing, drink in hand. Her left hand started snaking to the beat, lifting up and down with each thumping of the bass as Birdee's hips swayed from left to right as she danced, intentionally avoiding the crowded area designated as the dance floor. Anyone could dance anywhere in theory, but there was always a certain space, not far from the DJ that everyone viewed as the floor. She twist and turned around people, even stopped to dance with the girl at arm's length who invited her to dance nine or ten minutes ago. Birdee finished the drink and set it on a side table, then fluttered away from the woman. Her arms rose to the ceiling, then dropped to wave in a hypnotic trance, much like the glaze in her eyes as she headed back in the direction of the stairs.

Running his tattooed hands across his close-cut short hair, on the right side of his head, and through his almost shoulder length coal black hair, on the left, Marcus grabbed his hoodie on his way out of the door of his room at some motel. He was new in Harbor Rock and the seedy looking place was cheap enough, no frills, just a bed, a small tv sitting on an old three drawer dresser, a night stand, and a small bathroom with an even smaller shower. "Good enough for now" he thought to himself. He tucked his room key into his front left jean pocket and pulled the hoodie over his head, as he made his way down the now deserted street towards a bar he'd seen earlier. His heavy black leather boots making soft padding noises on the pavement.

Marcus shivered slightly, "Damn, it's colder out here than I realized." his breath making little wisps of fog in the air as he spoke to no one. Pulling his hood up over his head, he thrust his hands in the single huge pocket of the hoodie and quickened his pace.

After several wrong turns and back tracking, Marcus finally found the bar he was looking for, buzzing with activity. The place was packed, he suddenly wondered if there would be a cover charge to get in, cause if so, he wouldn't be able to hang out here. He really shouldn't be going out at all, if he knew what was good for him. Chuckling to himself, he never seemed to know what was good for him, he reached out to open the club door, and was greeted by a cacophony of sights, sounds, and smells.

Flashing lights, loud music, perspiration, smoke, alcohol... this place had it all and probably then some. Striding through the den of bodies, careful not to bump anyone to hard, and apologizing when he did, "Don't piss anyone off before your first drink, Marc, not yet!" he was almost to an opening he'd seen in the crowd.

Reaching the open spot, he stood on his tiptoes and scanned the club with his eyes, making note of the exits, there were two, the one he came in and one in the back he could see with a sign above it, he also located the bathroom and the bar. That was a habit with him, one that had saved him no uncertain amount of grief in the past, he always liked to know his options as far as buildings were concerned.

Marcus was in no big hurry for a drink, so he stood there in that open spot, listening to the bass thumping in his head. Slipping his hood off, he reached inside the neck of the hoodie and fished out his cigarettes and lighter. His hands were still cold, so he was fumbling with the lighter and consequently dropped it. Sighing he bent down on one knee to pick it up off the black carpet, lighting a cigarette before standing again.

The carpet was once again utilized to its full potential as Birdee made her way back in the direction of the staircase to the head shop upstairs. While Birdee deep down knew the floor was 'safe' no matter if it was carpeted or not, but the fact that her shoes could dig into the carpet and keep traction was something that comforted Birdee. Even as she spun and weaved around, she managed to avoid people (probably because Satine may or may not have warned people about touching her), and always managed to stay within the borders of the carpeting. Everyone who was a regular at least.

Birdee was in the middle of a spinning ensemble, with her left arm high in the air, before it dragged across her face, her hair strewn in at least a hundred different directions. Probably the main culprit of why she didn't see the guy who was kneeling on the ground, lighting his cigarette. It really could have been a number of things. Drugs, hair, her hand, lack of attention, take your pick. Whatever the reason was, Birdee was no longer spinning standing up, but spinning on her way down. On top of him.

Normally, in this sort of situation, having encountered a person and touching them even, Birdee would have caused a bigger scene than what was actually caused. As she fell on him, perhaps not realizing she fell over someone, she laughed and believed she more or less fell on a piece of furniture. Some parts were solid, while others were soft. Like a frame and its cushions. When she was on her back, her head turned and she saw the burning flame floating there. "Ooooh! Pretty." Birdee swiped at the flame from the lighter and that was when she swiped something else. Something solid.

A person. It was a person. The flame belonged to a person. Birdee had touched a person.

She held her breath, closed her eyes and waited. And...nothing happened. This happened sometimes, but it was so rare that Birdee forgot about it. She let the breath out and slowly creaked open each eye, the left first, followed by the right. When they were both open, Birdee finally made eye contact with the guy. "Hey. Watch where you're going. People are dancing. It is a club." Birdee squawked out before her eyes closed and her head weaved left and right, following the beat. "I think that's against the law or something. Being so close to things that could light on fire with a lighter. Alice would be pissed. You don't want to get on her bad side. Stand up." Birdee said as she did what she just suggested her do, enjoying that the night was still hers and belonged to her. Birdee gave him an open handed wave before flapping off again.

Marcus thumbed the cylinder of the lighter, rolling it under his right thumb, sparks flew as the metal grated across the flint but that was all it produced. "Come on you son of a *****, work!" Flick... flick... flick flick... fire! "Yes!", he thought to himself as he started to caress the business end of the cigarette hanging from his lips with the flame.

Suddenly he was spinning to the floor. As he landed on his left side, lighter still lit in his right hand, someone had fallen on him and had swatted his hand holding the lighter. "What the..." he cut off in mid sentence as he discovered an unknown female laying half way on him. He knew she'd said... something to him, but now she was just laying there, both eyes closed, and... was she holding her breath? He looked at her with one eyebrow raised and waited for her to move again. People would start to stare if they stayed on the floor and that wasn't the kind of attention he needed nor wanted.

Marcus was about to extricate himself from this awkward situation, when her eyes opened one at time and made contact with his. He heard her squawking at him to watch where HE had been going, that people were dancing, and it was a club. "No ****!" was all he got out as she closed her eyes and started bobbing her head to the beat of the music, then she was yammering at him again, he wasn't actually paying attention. His unlit cigarette had been crushed into the black plush carpet, shaking his head in disappointment, he caught some of the words the female had been saying.

Next thing he knew, she was standing up and telling him to do the same, which he did as he was trying to recall what she had said before. "Alice, yeah, that was the name, and why would she get pissed cause he had a lighter?" He was about to ask her, but as he straightened up, he caught the tail end of an open handed wave just before she danced off into the crowd.

Marcus wasn't about to let her get away without having his questions answered or at the very least, she could tell him her name. Diving through the crowd in the direction she had gone, he could see her weaving around people without actually touching them. They seemed to know which direction she was headed and opened the way for her, but he had no such luck. He jostled past people, followed by more than one curse or threat, he didn't know which nor did he give a **** at the moment. He wasn't sure why he was so hell bent on following this chick, but there he was, doing just that.

Anything he said or did, was either not heard, or warranted with any sort of reply; vocal or physical. Birdee was in her own world, snaking her way back up the stairs to the Head Shop to do some stocking of something that she probably should have done an hour or so ago. Before Birdee got consumed in the ink magazine she had been browsing. Birdee wasn't a slacker, but it didn't take long, or for much to distract her for an insane amount of time.

She was at the bottom stair when she jumped back off it and kept dancing before she spun around and reclaimed the steps. When she spun, she saw the person she had touched, and he seemed to be in hot pursuit of her. This caused Birdee to stop dancing and bound up the stairs in sets of two, because she wasn't exactly sure he was after her. And if he was-was he a cop? Did she maybe owe hiim a favor or money, and had forgotten about it? Why else would he be after her? ****. Birdee needed to get away from the bearded guy-whoever he was, before he managed to touch her. No way was she risking another encounter with the guy-not when she got off scott free from any of his 'vibes.'

"Dude. Percy. There's some guy coming up this way." Birdee said as soon as she got to the landing of the stairs, her eyes bouncing on him, to the various paraphernalia the shop sold. Percy looked at her with a 'no ****,' stare, not surprised that customers were coming up the stairs to potentially buy things. "Gonna be in the back." And that's right where she intended to be, but Birdee did a sharp turn and knocked her leg smack dab into a box of inventory that again, should have been put away an hour at least ago. Birdee went toppling to the side, fingers reaching out for the counter before she managed to bounce against the box and crush it. Thankfully, it was only a stack of mags and not some bongs, or something else that could have been destroyed. Percy came over to give her a helping hand, but as soon as he extended it to her, he was quick to snatch it back. No way was he going there again. Not when he almost died the last time he tried to help her and touched her.

Birdee laid on the crumpled up box and laughed, her fingers dragging through her hair, as her head tipped back as far as it could comfortably. And that was when she saw him again. The laugh stopped in all its full glory and was replaced with a muffled "Crap." She sat up, gave the guy a sideways look and raised both arms at each side. "Here to party, or here to ruin the party?" Birdee asked, her eyes focusing on his face; almost positive she had never seen him before.

She was fast and consequentially he quickly lost her in the sea of bodies, but he knew her general direction simply from the swirls and eddies she left in the wake of her path. She had gone in the direction of a set of stairs that led up to another floor. "You're slipping, Marc. You didn't even notice there WERE stairs to this place earlier. Pay attention!" He dismissed the thought with a low snort and a small shake of his head.

Diving through the crowd once more, he managed to gain access to the stairs. Looking around to make sure she wasn't just standing in some random place, watching him look for her in vane. He could almost picture her dancing at the edge of the crowd, watching the stairs, prepared to slip off again if he came anywhere close to where she was. Then again, maybe she hadn't noticed he had followed her, maybe she didn't give two fucks who he was or what he was doing... maybe... he sighed and shook his head again. Maybe he was full of **** to think she had even given him a second thought. But he couldn't and wouldn't stop looking for her, she intrigued him and he HAD to know why! It was like an itch he couldn't scratch, he'd always been that way though... as curious as ****.

Turning to face the stairs, he placed one hand on the wall and leaned his head forward to peer up the stair well. Shrugging as he straighten back up, he told himself, "Give it up, Marc, she's gone... disappe..." he cut off his words as he heard a loud THUMP upstairs, followed by... laughing? Not just any laughing, it was HER laughing, he'd heard it as she tripped over him earlier. Bounding up the stairs, three at a time, he skidded to a halt at the top. "****, Marc, calm down! You don't even know this chick." He strode through the door to see the female laying on a box, a huge hulk of a man standing beside her just watching. Marcus took the opportunity to look around him, he wasn't about to help her stand as long as the other guy was closer.

The room appeared to be a shop, full of everything anyone could want or need for any kind of drug or whatever they desired at the time. He moved over to a display of bongs and was admiring one that looked like a human heart. As he reached for it, he heard the female say "Crap" and turned to face her again, without touching the bong. He crossed his arms on his chest as she sat up, giving him a sideways look before raising both her arms and asking him a question. Eyeing the big guy that hadn't moved a muscle or said a word since he'd entered the shop, Marcus looked around once again before his mocha colored eyes returned to where she sat on the floor. A random thought danced quickly through his head, "Is she ever going to stand up?" it made him smile and let out a soft chuckle before he ventured to answer her query.

"To party of course, but..." he eyed the big man beside her again and decided not to push his luck where he was concerned, he didn't know what he'd stumbled into but what ever was going on between the two was none of his fuckin' business. He eyed the door then ran his left hand through his long coal locks on his head, then finished what he was going to say, "I see you and stone face here know one another, so maybe I came at a bad time." he quirked one eyebrow and nodded before adding, "How much for a pack of the gum, miss?".

Marcus had decided that his curiosity would have to be sated with just maybe getting her name for starters, then he'd see where the convo was going afterwards. That is, if she didn't tell stone face to toss his *** back down the stairs, but that would make a scene and be bad for the business, he hoped.

Birdee caught him looking at the bongs and figured one of two things. He was a cop, looking to bust someone for something, or he was just genuinely a customer. The former would be a problem, but if it was the latter, Birdee didn’t want to chase the guy off. Alice needed sales and sales meant she and Percy got to keep their jobs. “That beauty is forty. Newer item too. I’m going to get her on pay day.” She told him with a shrug before she glanced over to ‘stone face,’ Percy. Birdee laughed and then shook her head. “Oh, **** no, bro.” Birdee rolled her eyes and finally stood up, the box beyond smooshed from her weight. “You came at the right time, if you’re looking to get a party started.” Birdee assured him as she looked at the variety of gums the store had to offer. “I’m Birdee and that’s Percy.” She thrust a thumb in Percy’s direction before addressing Marcus’ needs.

“As for your gum, it sorta depends. The regular **** is just under two bucks a pack, but this...” Birdee pulled out her own pack of gum from the side of a cash register, and removed a stick from inside the teal colored pack. She held it in front of his face as she kept talking. “This pack is just around fifteen. But worth every ******* dollar.” She gave it a little shake and then started to pull it back. “Free sample. Want it? You’ll never chew that regular garbage ever again.” Birdee told him, her tone almost laced with a warning attached to her sentence. “But, if you’ve changed your mind on joining the party…” Birdee shrugged her shoulders before she set it on the counter, not wanting him to accidentally touch her-if he took the offer of the gum after all. She got lucky once, Birdee wasn’t going to push it a second go around. “I’ve got to put that away.” Birdee said, before pointing to the box she smushed with her weight when she tripped over the box. “But, if you like the gum, I’m sure Percy can help you find something like it-if the flavor isn’t your wildest dream. He’s been working here a lot longer than me.” Birdee admitted as she moved back to the box and hoisted it up. “Seriously hope you’re not a cop.” Birdee said as she moved past him and into a small stock room, where the magazines belonged until they were supposed to be released sometime next week.

Marcus had enough to purchase almost anything he desired, but he wasn't going to spend his hard earned cash on the first bong he'd come across. He stood there with his arms still crossed on his chest and gave her a small smile as she stated that he had come at the right time. "I'm here to party." he said simply. Nodding to each of them as she gave him their names and was about to give his, but instead opted to remain silent, it seemed Birdee wasn't finished speaking and he was never rude. Not at first anyway.

He'd never been much of a gum chewer per se, not that he was opposed to gum chewing, he was just more of a smoker than anything. He watched her as she grabbed something from the side of one of the registers, then it hit him what she was talking about. He had been having trouble focusing on what she was saying, all he was thinking about was that he hadn't had a cigarette since before entering the club. "Gum," he thought, "yes, gum would be just as good or maybe even better than a cigarette, right now."

Watching the offered stick of gum she was shaking in front of him, he reached for it with one hand. Before he could even get near it though, Birdee had shrugged and set it on the counter. He took the few steps required to squeeze past stone face and pick up the gum. Unwrapping it, he popped it in his mouth and began chewing, the flavor wasn't exactly his favorite, but free was free and he could get used to this flavor. He nodded as he stuffed the wrapper in his left front jeans pocket.

Marcus chuckled, "**** no, I'm not a fuckin' cop!" shaking his head he added, "I'll take one pack of the gum, for now." He then fished a worn black leather trifolded wallet complete with a chain hooked to his jeans and thumbed it open to retrieve some cash. He looked at Birdee then at stone face, "You DO take cash, right?" He could've opted to use his bank card for the transaction, but he preferred to use cash when possible.

Seeing as how Birdee was busy picking up the box of whatever it was she had crushed, he thrusted a $20 in stone face's direction. "****, what was stone face's name again? Percy?" He was starting to feel the effects of the gum, his mouth had started tingling from the get go, but now... "Wow, this gum is really good. Thanks for the free sample, uh, Birdee." Not waiting for stone face to take the cash, Marcus slid it onto the countertop beside the register and snagged a teal colored pack from the display. "Keep the change, stone face... erm, Percy!"
He turned to face Birdee again, but she had already hoisted the box up and moved past him in to a stock room. Without thought, Marcus followed her, "Hey, you need any help with that box?" He moved to help but stopped short of grabbing for the box, he didn't want to force his help on her, she was the employee here not him.

He said he wasn't a cop and all Birdee could do was shrug her shoulders. If he was, Satine could probably deal with it. It just made things easier if he wasn't a cop. Birdee looked back once she had the box in her arms and watched the unknown guy talk about wanting a pack of gum. She rolled her eyes when he asked if they took cash, and then put her two cents in. “Only if it's the right color.” She said with a laugh, before Birdee snuggled the box against the door of the storage room so she could turn the handle with a free hand, now that the box was taut against her and the door. Of course, had she thought about what would happen once the door opened, Birdee probably would have opted to set the box down and then grab the knob to the door.

The voice behind her startled Birdee, not expecting him to be behind her. As soon as the door was open, the box slid free and dropped between the door and her legs.“OH CRAP.” She said after sighing and turning to look at him, a hand still pressed against the door to keep it open. “Great, and yeah. I know. I have at least three packs going.” Sh smirked a little bit, before returning her attention back to the box of magazines on the floor. “And yeah. I evidently do. Need your help, or anyone's.” Birdee confessed since Percy was busy stocking another part of the store once the maybe cop, maybe not a cop guy left his area.

Birdee moved around the box then and pressed her back to the door to use her weight to keep the door open. “Don't tell Percy. Might have my ***.” She said after putting an index finger to her lip, in the universal signal to keep it quiet. “So what's your name, Mister not a ******* cop?” Birdee asked after she reached up to pull the chain to the light switch, causing the room to erupt in an explosion of dim light. Her eyes went to him, taking in his facial features better than before. She wasn't so much checking him 'out' as she was checking to see how he was going to do with the gum she swore by.

Marcus was trying to keep his facial expressions to a minimum, but he was having a hard time. The corners of his mouth seemed like they wanted to touch his ears. "It's so fuckin' hot in here!" he muttered. He was fighting the urge to outright laugh as he watched the box she had had pressed against the door, fall. He'd used heroin before, but it'd been a while, the euphoric rush that it was giving him was a pleasant alternative to the lesser nicotine rush his body was expecting right about now. "No wonder she had been dancing around earlier," he thought to himself, aloud he said, "You're right, this gum is awesome! Thanks for the free sample."

Marcus moved closer to the box of magazines to help out, nodding silently as she said she could actually use some help with the box. He wouldn't rat her out to stone face, there was no point. He squinted and raised one open palmed hand to shade his eyes as she turned on the light. It was a store room, of course, Marcus could see all sorts of items just waiting to be bought. His back was to her when she asked him his name, he gave a little chuckle at being referred to as "Mister, not a ******* cop!", and he had a smile on his face when he turned to face her once again.

"Marcus, my name is Marcus." he said as knelt down on one knee to start gathering up some magazines, placing them in what was left of the box they had fallen out of repeatedly. He stopped after a moment then laughed, "I have this strange feeling of deja vu," he looked up at her, then added, "You're not gonna trip over me again... are you?"
