dark nights [otto maccarrick]

Post by Lu (DELETED 8794) »

Lu was bound to get into some kind of trouble someday. As a drifter, he regularly did things that were going to come back down on him one way or another, but he never thought it would be something this terrible. He always thought he’d get tracked down by authorities and tossed in jail or something for all the times he’s hustled people and stolen off of them. It’s still hard for him to fathom that he’s no longer human, and that he’s one of the things he’s heard rumors about for so long before the truth came out that they’re real. Saying he fucked up was putting it lightly. This consequence hasn’t stopped him from carrying on with his old ways, though.

Some guy he met at a bar the other night while playing pool figured out his charade. The guy, Otto or something like that, realized Lu was trying to hustle him out of his money. Funny, because the guy looked like he couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag. He sure as hell couldn’t play pool worth a damn. Still, it led to a fight that they took out into the alley, and it didn’t take long to turn into more than well-aimed punches before the asshole pulled out a knife. Panicking, Lu wrangled the switchblade away from him, and without any forethought, stabbed him in the chest. He probably would have died if it hadn’t been for the fact that Lu didn’t want his blood on his hands and more trouble along with it.

So he turned him.

Otto’s blood wasn’t exactly great. It was laden with the alcohol he drank throughout the night and it overpowered the taste of his blood. Lu then grabbed the switchblade and dragged it across his forearm before holding his arm up to the man’s lips and making him drink. This probably wasn’t a very good idea on his part, either. Then again, Lu just seemed to be full of good ideas lately, huh? After that, he left him there alone to turn.

Lu holed himself up in some dingy old shack, leaving himself to think about the things he’d done and what he should do next.

Otto had been woken up the next by the intense feeling of being on fire. He wasn't in flames, but he wasn't far from it, either. Panicking, he managed to drag himself out of the light and into a dumpster to sleep the rest of the day away in there.

He spent the next night in there, too, taking stock of his situation. His face still felt like it was on fire; ****, the last time any part of him had burned this badly was that time he caught the clap from a guy down in Daytona Beach. At least this time it wasn't his junk, though. Small blessings. Otto couldn't quite remember what had happened the night before; he'd been real drunk. You'd think he would've learned by now not to accept drinks from handsome strangers, but he was a sucker for dark eyes and smoky voices and was an even bigger sucker for free beer. Ah, but the guy had hustled him, hadn't he? Something Otto hadn't noticed until his wallet was completely empty. He remembered that, vaguely, and the fight, and -

Getting stabbed. ****. He yanked his shirt down and caught sight of the wound in his chest. Weird, it didn't seem to be bleeding, and the edges had a weird... Haze to them. Sticking a finger in there made him yelp, so was pretty sure he wasn't dead; besides, this would be a pretty shitty afterlife, being stuck in a dumpster that smelled like week-old rotten potatoes. He spent another day in there though before climbing out after dusk, feeling starved and smelling like hot garbage. He made his way back into the bar and cleaned up as best he could, then asked around about the guy who'd hustled him, which the folks were eager to tell him about, if for no other reason than the other guy was new in town and new faces stuck out, and telling Otto about it got him away from them as soon as possible.

He spent the next day or so hiding in the sewers and feeding on rats, which he was disgusted by but the urge to feed couldn't be sated, especially not with as hungry as he felt all the time. Following leads he picked up in the night and a feeling in his gut, he finally found himself outside of a little rundown building just on the edge of town. A few people had told him they'd seen a guy matching the one he was looking for come in and out, and Otto camped outside to wait and see for himself. The closer to dawn it got, the antsier he became, but his patience was rewarded when the asshole finally came skulking into view.

"You ***********!" Otto roared as he lunged for the man, catching him by the shirt and slamming into the wall. "What the hell did you do to me?"

Lu cracked the door open just a bit to peer outside, then, when he thought he was fine to leave, he stepped out and the man from a few nights ago was on him, slamming him against the wall. The back of his head hits the old wood of the shack, and he’s glad it’s not brick or concrete, otherwise the force would have cracked his head open. It did leave his head spinning, though, and it took him a few moments to focus on the man, and even longer to process what he said. His eyes drift down to his chest where the knife wound should be, but his shirt was so soaked with blood that it was hard to tell whether or not it had healed fully.

Lifting his gaze, he looked at the man, trying to focus his vision. “I kept you alive,” Lu told him with a growl coming from the back of his throat. “Not out of the kindness of my heart, I can tell you that much. I just didn’t want people tracing your body back to me.”

He grabbed at one of the hands on his shirt to try to wrench it away with a snarl. “Just – just come inside with me. I’ll tell you as much as I know.” Which isn’t much, but he wanted the man off of him. He stank of sewage and garbage. At least he was smart enough to get himself out of the sun and stay low, but Christ, he could have at least gone home and taken a damn shower.

Carefully, so as not to make the man think he was going to try something, he stretches his arm out to open the door to the old house. “Go on inside,” he urged.

Otto yelped a little as the man yanked on his hand, twisting it back to the point that he thought he heard bones crunch a little. Snarling, he let him go and shrank back a little, eyeing him hard. He didn't trust him, not one bit. He suspected he had ulterior motives, but what, he didn't know. Running his fingers through his hair and making it stick up every which way, he paced a little, watching Lu warily and deciding what to do, then grunted.

"Fine," he relented, then slunk into the little shack. It was mostly empty and dusty looking, like no one actually lived there and Lu was just squatting there. Otto leaned against a doorjamb, his eyes darting between the other man and the door to the outside, planning his escape if **** goes south. "You hustled me, stabbed me - in the damn chest nonetheless - but here I am, still kickin'. What the hell did you do to me? And don't give me a vague-*** answer about savin' my life, that part's pretty obvious. And don't fuckin' lie to me."

Lu trailed in after him and shut the door, leaving the moldy room dark save for a little light flooding in through boarded up windows. He crossed his arms over his chest, eyes trailing over the man briefly before coming back up to his face. “It’s so crazy you might think I’m lyin’. That’s the issue.” He took in a breath, then quickly realized it wasn’t necessary. He still wasn’t used to not having to breathe, and he wondered when he wouldn’t even have to think twice about it.

“Sorry ‘bout that, by the way,” he apologized, motioning to Otto’s chest. “I panicked.” Even though I had no reason to, he added to himself. The knife was ultimately harmless, but adrenaline and tension were both running high and it was hard to think about anything beyond the fight. It still would have hurt like a *****, though. “You heard about those things on the news lately? Vampires? That’s what happened to you. I thought it would be better than lettin’ your dumb *** die.” He grinned. “Glad to know you were smart enough to take to the sewers and feed there, though.”

He glanced out a crack in the boarded up windows as a car passed, his body tensing, then relaxing once he knew everything was fine. Ever since he was turned, he’d been looking over his shoulder even more than he had before. He already had a run-in with a hunter he mistakenly tried to feed on, and he didn’t need another one.

“I can’t really tell you anything beyond that. I don’t know a whole lot about it myself,” Lu admitted quietly. “I haven’t been one for much longer than you have. A week, maybe, I dunno. I lost track of time.”

The eyes roaming his body made his skin crawl a little, though he couldn't tell one way or the other if it was good or bad, and the sound of his voice was smooth and oddly soothing. It made him relax a bit despite himself, though he still watched the prick warily. Stab me once, shame on you; stab me twice, well, pin a tail on me and call me a jackass who can't keep himself outta trouble. His apology made him scoff a little, and he couldn't help but sneer at his answer.

"That's it? That's your answer? Vampires? What's next, is Bigfoot gonna come tell me he's my daddy?" he spat. Sure, he'd seen the news, hard to ignore it, but ****, it was the biggest load of bull he'd seen since people were talking about that app that let you find and fight people close to you. (A pity that was fake too; sometimes a guy just needed a good fight to keep his blood-flow on the up and up.) Did this asshole really think he was a vampire? And that he'd made Otto one too? ****, he thought he'd left the crazies who thought that kinda crap behind when he left New Orleans years ago.

Still, though, there were a few too many things that clicked and made sense for this guy to just be a nutjob, if any of the crap he'd heard about vampires in movies and such when he was growing up was true. The number the sun had done on his face, for one. His fucked-up hunger, for another, and the fact that he hadn't been able to say no to it. He tugged his shirt down a little to eye the wound still in his chest, not caring if the other man saw it or not. Hell, he hoped he did, and felt guilty for it, for stabbing him, for turning him into a monster. If that's even what he was; though he had to admit, vampire or not, he sure wasn't a normal human anymore.

"Well, gee, thanks, buddy. I'm glad you picked lil ol' me to join your, what, army of darkness?" he snarled sarcastically, kicking at an old can that was in range and sending it clattering across the floor. "Feh! Ain't that just my goddamn luck, gettin' turned into a vampire by some dipshit who doesn't know what he's doin' at all! Now I'm stuck like this, thanks to some low-down, dirty hustler! And he's the only one like this I know, and he's just as clueless as I am! So that's great, just ******* great, you're a real big help, pal!"

Otto threw his arms up in the air in exasperation, not caring that he was snapping insults at the man in his own home, if you could call it that. He didn't care if he was offending him, he was pissed: at the hustler, at the situation, at himself for getting caught up in all this just because he couldn't say no to a handsome face. Guess that'd teach him not to take drinks from strangers in the future, eh? If he even had a future anymore.

"Verdict's still out on Bigfoot. Hell, I thought the vampire talk was a load of ****, too, but it's not. C'mon, you burned the **** outta your face, but you don't think you're a vampire?" he scoffed. "And I can smell the stink of the sewers on you, not to mention the garbage." Thankfully, he didn't need to breathe, so Lu didn't have to smell him if he didn't want to. "Shame about your face, too, but it should heal up in a few days."

His eyes went to his chest when he pulled his shirt down to get a look at the wound, and he would have felt bad if it hadn't been for the sudden slew of sarcasm and insults that followed. Lu's upper lip lifted in a sneer and it took a lot of control not to just grab him and slam him against the wall and tell him to shut the **** up. "Funny. I was this close to feelin' sorry for you," he growled, holding his fingers up a hair's breadth apart. "I guess I shoulda just let you die there, huh? I doubt anyone would miss you anyway. Fuckin' asshole," he rumbled.

The comment about Bigfoot nearly got a smile out of him, and his hand went to his face at the mention of his burn. His goddamn unreasonable burn that he shouldn't have gotten. It couldn't be true, it just... couldn't. But too much of what Lu said made sense, and besides, if the guy wanted to **** with him, there were way better ways to do that than make up a fake story. Still, it was a lot to swallow, and coming to terms with suddenly being something he'd always known wasn't real wasn't an easy thing, not by a long shot.

Scratching at his neck idly, Otto mulled over the ramifications of his newfound ******** and nearly missed the comment about his face. He shot Lu a curious, suspicious look; the way he'd said that, coupled with the drinks from last night... Nah, it wasn't anything more than a hustle, plain and simple. No need to think it was anything more, even if he did find the ******** attractive.

He'd started to settle a bit after his outburst, but the shift in Lu's demeanor set his hackles right back up. "Yeah, well, I didn't want ya to feel sorry for me, I just wanted an explanation, that's all," he sneered back. The way the other man growled sent shivers up Otto's spine, and he snapped his attention away from him to focus on a broken floorboard six inches away from his left toe.

"Yeah," he said after a quiet moment, his rage having simmered way down to barely boiling. "Honestly, you shoulda. Woulda been a fittin' end for a scumbag like me. Hell, that's the way I always figured I'd go out: in a puddle of blood and piss in some alley somewhere thanks to a hustle gone bad." The laugh that escaped his mouth was short, humorless, and rough, more like a wheezing bark than anything else. "I'm not sure if I should punch ya or thank you, seein' as I'm still not sure if you savin' my *** was a good thing or not."
