Lost in Thought(Nerissa)

It had been another long spell since he was last out and about the city, between his failed attempts for a couple of relics, that left him a bit banged up, and the cops that shot him up afterwards had left him in a bit of a weakened state. He was sure whoever it was that owned the places he had broken into had some part to play in the cops turning on him. After all, it hadn't been all of them that seemed to attack him on sight and after having time to lick his wounds they seemed to have already forgotten his misdeeds. That thought made him laugh softly to himself as he shook his head, as fickle as any vampire in this place with influence was it shouldn't be surprising their reactions and the way the city seemed to do business should be any different.

In the time he had been holed up though things had started to change considerably and several groups of both humans and vampires were at war in the city no matter how calm the streets might appear at the moment. For him it presented a golden opportunity to actually start making a living in this place, doing some of what he had done best as a human, kill and deceive. Where to start would be the tricky part but that could be worked out later. For now he wandered through the QZ, trying to piece his thoughts together in the relative safety the place offered as wandering zombies and a very occasional Mooncalf were nothing he needed to worry about. Sure, there might be hunters like had happened a few months previous but that wasn't a real concern for him at the moment. At night it would be extremely foolish for a human to make itself his target.

That brought a faint glimmer of delight to his eyes though as he almost hoped there would be someone so foolish to try and kill him at the moment. If only so he could really cut loose for a short while and get a bit of sport out of his food rather than just a quick easy meal. Unfortunately, the night was calm and that didn't look to be in the cards. As he walked through the streets that were cordoned off from the rest of the city he couldn't help his gaze that fell on the theater where that ambush had taken place. Sure it was almost entirely burned down, but it made him smirk as he though to finish the place off and finish it off but that would draw attention. Attention that he really didn't feel like bringing on himself at the moment. Passing it by he paused as he looked towards the alleyways across from it, the stains of blood long since washed away and yet because he had seen it as it happened, he would always know where they should be.

It only brought a shake of his head as he considered for a moment where he might want to head off to. As he made his way back towards the Flats he considered going into the sewers to search for Hunters and Paladins, it was always fun to sneak up behind them and watch them die often times not even realizing he was there. There was the occasional one or two that would get lucky and get a shot off that caught him unprepared but those wounds healed quickly enough to not really hinder him. As he stood there waiting though he felt that wasn't where he should be tonight. He usually listened to such feelings when he had them, they were more often right than not though when they were wrong it usually meant a lot of pain and suffering for him. So instead he began to head north, away from the city towards the river. It would be easy enough to cross that small body of water and be out in the city again without needing to bother with the twisting sewers beneath the city.

Nerissa emerged from the sewers into the quarantine zone with practiced ease and started walking towards the Flats. It was a successful night for her and the messenger bag she had found recently was full of stolen items that she was getting ready to sell. She also found some weapons she was looking forward to fiddling with once she got the chance, but she was a little wary to go to the abandoned fire department. It had been a while since the theater exploded, but ever since it happened she had a lingering fear of being caught alone again. The Quarantine Zone was supposed to be the safest place in town before, but it was also invaded by humans that wanted nothing other than to kill her. She smirked slightly at the thought of how no matter where she went, she was still rejected. Sure, she was now a blood-sucking creature of the night, but she never hurt anyone unless they attacked her first.

Out of habit she looked around to make sure there wasn't anything dangerous that could hurt her and saw a man walking towards the river. She didn't have a good view of his face, but she could tell it was him. It was hard to forget who was with you in a burning building. She was about to call out to him when she realized he never got his name. So, she called out using the nickname she gave him, "Hey Mace Guy!" Nerissa hadn't seen anyone that was involved in the explosion until now and maybe he was willing to chat for a bit. With all of the chaos they never really had the chance to get to know each other.

He was almost at the edged of the QZ when he heard the voice call out behind him. There was something vaguely familiar about the voice calling out but he was going to simply continue on his way, after all his name was most certainly not Mace Guy. He stopped in his tracks just a couple of steps later though as he realized they might have actually been calling out to him and he turned his head to look. Seeing the woman that stood by the sewer entrance he felt a slight smirk coming to his face musing to himself, Seems I am the Mace Guy.

He couldn't really take offense to her calling him such to get his attention, he didn't know her name either, at the time they had been around one another there were more important issues to deal with than a friendly chat and getting to know one another. The though made him laugh to himself as he turned to walk back towards her. The idea of them all sitting in seats in the theater as it burned around them was actually something he could see himself doing, and knew there would also likely be others who would enjoy just letting the world burn around them. The problem had been hunters though and an unconscious person to deal with trying to help as well.

Once he was only a few feet away he finally stopped and inclined his head in greeting, "Hello Purple." He figured he might as well go with her most outstanding feature which at least to him was her hair. He had never understood doing such things with dyes if not for a disguise. It made a person stick out, but then to some he knew it wasn't a hazard as it would have been for him for many years and he could hardly fault anyone for being able to live that carefree. He tilted his head slightly as he watched her eyes, his own unblinking with only the faintest trace of a smile on his face, "What can I do for you today? More burning buildings you need help with?"

When he didn't stop Nerissa thought that maybe he didn't hear her and was about to shrug it off and move on when he turned around. Yep, it was definitely the guy that pummeled a Mooncalf into mush. At the time of the attack she had just barely successfully killed her first Mooncalf, but that was with her rifle. He obliterated it with his mace, being up close and personal to the creature, and she found that kind of inspiring.

She smirked at the nickname he gave her and said "No, no burning buildings. I don't think I've caused enough trouble to warrant and attack yet." She pushed her hair back behind her ear. "What about you? Pissed off any humans lately?" She surprised herself a bit at how friendly she was being. Normally she would be more quite in a conversation, let alone actually start one! She grinned inwardly at the progress she seemed to be making. Pyper would be proud of her.

He chuckled softly at her response, at least she didn't have a burning building to deal with. He seemed to find trouble wherever he went so it actually wouldn't have surprised him if she did, in fact, have a burning building she needed help with. "Well then it seems if there is no fire to put out I might as well stick around for a bit." He sighed at her question though, "Oh yea. Had the cops pissed at me a couple weeks ago. Shot me all to hell a few times when I crossed paths with them. Was not a fun week of recovery."

He saw the bag she was carrying then and a slight smirk crossed his face as he looked at the woman before him, "So what brings you to these parts? Off to hock things you're making?" His head canted slightly to the side, almost with a look of disapproval as he decided to see what she would say to his questions, "Or perhaps some ill-gotten gains that you need to pawn off?" Of course he didn't actually disapprove. He stole plenty when it seemed convenient and things like that had made him a fair bit of money so he could hardly condemn her for it even if he wanted to. Of course she couldn't know that and he almost hoped she would take him serious if it was a bunch of stolen stuff just to see if he could make her sweat about it. He hadn't planned on dealing with anyone today, and since it wasn't someone he felt he would likely need to kill in the foreseeable future he didn't think a bit of fun at their expense would be too bad of an exchange.

Nerissa winced slightly as he talked about the police. She remembered all too well the times she would piss off a couple of guards and then have the police at her door a few days later. It only took a few times of that happening for her to learn how to avoid detection during her escapades, especially as she became better at her trade and learned how to get into higher security buildings. As she thought about it, the police hadn't caught her in a while, which usually meant she was going to slip up soon. She made a mental note to be more careful for the next little while

At his question about her bag she subconsciously tightened her grip on it and raised an eye brow suspiciously. "And just what would you do if they were stolen goods? Report me to the cops? What if it's just stuff I purchased from town, hmm?" How ironic if that was the case. She wasn't too sure if he was joking with her or not; she was really bad when it came to social cues. She doubted he was serious, he just said he and the law were not on good terms, but it still benefited to be careful. She had been betrayed too many times in her life to let down her guard so easily.

He found it amusing the way she reacted when he brought up the police and his most recent, and unfortunate run ins with them. It seemed he wasn't the only one that had a hard time with them around the city and he highly doubted just the two of them were the only ones to feel that way. Of course it shouldn't have been that surprising at all considering the way that most went about things in the city, taking what they wanted from whomever they wanted, and he was no better and fit that category just as well. Her question though, about what he would do made him laugh softly, "Do about it? Absolutely nothing."

He shook his head and a slight smile lingered on his face as he thought for a brief moment before shrugging, "Besides, why would I care if you steal from people? I do it. Hell it's a lot cheaper to get the things I want that way so why would I stop you from doing it?" He shrugged slightly before adding teasingly, "Stealing things that are already stolen is far more fun anyways." He wasn't going to steal from her, mainly because he didn't feel like it and doubted that anything she had would likely interest him but he couldn't resist poking just a bit, to see how she might react and if she would take him serious about stealing those things that are already stolen. It made no difference to him either way really, but it was fun to poke and prod to learn about people since it was easier to judge by reactions than from just asking a question and getting an answer. Especially when an answer could very easily be a lie.

Ill gotten gains aside though he was curious what had led her to initially call out to him, he generally wasn't one for too much idle chatter when out and exposed in the streets like they were right now and so decided it was best they either, '**** or get off the pot,' as the saying went. His eyes focused on hers once more, the semblance of friendliness dropping as his face went flat again showing no real expression at all, his eyes even seeming to get somewhat distant and cold, "So what is it you wished to talk about that you called me for today?" He knew the change was abrupt, it was something he had a hard time stopping though as his personality had always been rather fickle and he saw no reason to hide or try and change it. They had had their little small talk in the street and at this point he was curious just what had been on her mind when she called out to him.

Nerissa relaxed a bit at his response and loosened her grip on the bag. It appeared that he was just joking around with her, so she slightly let down her guard. But only slightly. She rarely told anyone of her escapades in fear of being ridiculed for it, but knowing that he did it as well eased her worries for now. She did tense a bit at his comment about stealing what was already stolen, but she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt in case he was joking again. "Yes it is," she replied simply.

It startled her slightly when his expression changed and she worried that she might have said something to offend him, and when he asked why she called out to him she had to stop and think of a reason. She only called out to him to see if it really was him, but surely there was another reason? After a bit of quick thinking she replied "I never got the chance to properly thank you for helping me when the humans attacked. I doubt I would have made it out alive without your help. So thank you." She hated admitting this weakness, but it was true, she couldn't deny it. With trigger-happy humans, a half dead vampire and a mooncalf all in the middle of the day there was no way she would have survived. No matter how much she tried to deny it, she was still a new vampire and wasn't near as strong as the others she had met so far.
