What can I say about the human race? Last I took note, I too belong to this demographic, yet why do I find myself often gazing at other humans in disbelief? I watch them, like one might watch National Geographic, and notice that WE ARE NOT in some magical and mysterious way, superior to the other creatures of the Earth. I mean, when was the last time you saw Squirrels, Primates, or Jaguars engaging in warfare that was both toxic and destructive to the planet’s overall being, depleting the Ozone Layer, or poisoning the water we drink and derive life from?
I have been walking the streets of Harper Rock lately, watching people go about their day-to-day lives, often showing ne’er a sign or thought of what lurks in the shadows any given day. Like the person who thinks they hear footsteps in their house, when they’re supposed to be home alone, and they throw a blanket over their head, and hold their breath. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen someone sitting or crouching under a blanket before, but I was a kid once, and we used to build blanket forts: WE CAN SEE YOU.
I was listening to an Audiobook the other day, and a character in the story asked someone, “what do you think most people’s reaction would be, if they were to wipe their rear afterwards, and come back with a hefty sum of blood?” I paused the Audiobook then, captivated by the question. It sounded like a question that had some kind of killer punchline, and I wanted to be the first to guess or deduce it.
Unable to, I finally turned it back on.
“Most would simply dismiss it, cast it to the back of their minds, and hope it goes away on it’s own”.
Instead of doing what we can to improve situations around us, it’s as though we punch our heads into the dirt, and wait for situations to resolve themselves. Don’t people realize, even though the ostrich hides it’s head in the dirt, THE REST OF IT’S BODY IS STILL LARGELY VISIBLE BY PREDATORS?!?!?
I’m not saying my life has been largely joyous or the subject of optimism since I came to realize these truths, but I can honestly say that I no longer have the feeling of having the wool drawn over my eyes. I no longer go about my life, walking about like a marionette on strings, wondering why I’m unhappy, and why a sense of restlessness and unease seems to frequently come over me. I now *KNOW* why, and I can take steps to improve my situation, instead of merely applying a small, society-approved and validated Band-Aid over a gaping torso wound.
Like Andre 3000 said, “Speeches only reaches those who already know about it”. When you’re preaching to a crowd, don’t expect to change minds, or to convince people to break free of their mental chains. More times than not, the people you’ll move are the people who ALREADY KNOW there is a problem, deep down, but who have been seeing their lack of Validation from others as a sign that it might just be their imagination.
When you speak out, when you write a public blog, when you do a Podcast aimed at Social Reform, understand this first and foremost: you’re not changing minds; if your aim is right, you’re merely validating the suspicions a large number of people already have, and they’ve been suppressed by saboteurs who tell them they “think too much”, or accuse them of being “conspiracy theorists”. After all, when people try and reach out to a crowd, you want to know what Society’s conditioned us to see that as?
That’s right, the Doomsayer, the deranged, mentally ill old man with the tinfoil hat and a sign saying “THE END IS NEAR”. Society is rigged to try and REPEL, SHUN and ALIENATE people who think outside of the Status Quo. Humans are a social creature, “safety in numbers”, so the greatest punishment our Society’s leaders have for us, is forcing us to be alone, and the vast majority of the world’s population DO subscribe to this tactic.
Ever been banned from an online community, or a social group, because your thinking wasn’t parallel with that of the group leaders?
Believe me, people…ee’ve gotten better about it, but we still have a LONG ways to go…
