New Girl (Open For Anyone)

Duvaineth had a favourite street corner. It had a slight indentation, where she could sit or lean, her lack of height allowing her to stand comfortably under the little shelter as well. It was just a small brick alcove, but she had stayed there, clueless, the last few nights.
Vampire. That was a word she knew, and a word that stuck to her. She knew that was what she had become, but she had not come to terms with it. This transformation was so.. New. It felt overwhelming to her. Things felt different, but she had no one to show her a way to deal with it. Often she became distracted by trivial things, such as the feeling of the ground or the brick she leant against. People ignored her, and that was how she liked it.
I can't go home. I can't see my mother. She thought, solemnly. She was a bit of a burn out - never really spoke to her own peers, or spent much time at home. But she had never missed as much as then. A homeless Vampire - not a fearless one. That's what she was. She was dirty, with knotted ginger-red hair, scruffy clothes and dirty hands. Her face was pretty, and unusual. A nose with a slight crook, strong cheek bones, large, soft lips and grey-blue eyes. Freckles scattered like stars.
Half-healed cuts littered her lip, where she had accidentally bitten too hard with her sharpened teeth.
Her paleness looked deathly, ironically. She was even a little blue. Holes had already worn into her clothes because of her being insistent on climbing and running carelessly, bewitched by her new speed. She was surprised that she wasn't in trouble yet, with someone. Anyone.
Duvaineth watched the dead street through tired, unfocused eyes. I don't need home. I have a street corner. That can be enough, I suppose.

Cosimo was well versed in the art of homelessness. If one could call it an art. In Italy, he had never been without a home, but when he’d first come to Harper Rock he’d drifted. Given a meagre dwelling, to begin with, by the Paladins, he soon had to leave that behind after he’d fucked up and burned those particular bridges. Or, well, they weren’t bridges that he himself wanted to cross back over, so he’d burned them in the hopes of not being followed. Without that hovel as a welcome home, however, he’d spent a few solid weeks on the streets. At least it wasn’t in the dead of Winter. At least the cold was slightly tolerable. At least there’d been gatherings of the homeless around fire drums so he could keep warm, though he made no friends.
Elizabeth had plucked him out of that existence, but it was a good one to remember. It was good to be a person who had lost everything and who had hit rock bottom. It helped one’s own psyche. It helped to accept all the bad things life threw at you because you knew that it could get worse. It could get much worse. He had clothes on his back and he had his life and his health (healthier now than ever, really). Despite all else, that was something to be grateful for.
Rather than head to the slums which had been Cosimo’s stomping grounds, he instead headed from the station to the sewer entrance that would lead him to the Quarantine Zone. At least there, he would have no cops to shoot at him. And he wouldn’t have to go and beg Elise for more blood.
He passed by the girl nestled in the corner’s indentation. He glanced at her before realising she must be without a home. Although Cosimo didn’t have much money on him, he backtracked anyway, digging through his pockets to see what he could find. Only when he was standing in front of her, holding out about forty dollars worth, did he get a really good look at her. She looked like death. Not even death warmed up. She looked cold, and like she was about to slip over the threshold of death’s door.
Though there was something different... something... what was it that was different? Cosimo did not stop to think about it.
”Buon Dio...! You are not alright...” he said. He didn’t ask the question. Just made an obvious statement. And he had no idea what to follow it up with, so just stood there staring, his hand still holding out that cash, the cogs slowly turning in his brain.

Her eyes narrowed as she caught sight of the stranger, and she watched him intently as he backtracked to her. As his hands dug in his pockets she turned her head away, refusing pity, snuggling further into her coat. From the corner of her eye, she saw him extend a hand with the money - she thought it useless;
She had clothes, admittedly they were messy and dirty by this point, but they had done well. She could not buy food - she did not understand what she hungered for. Shelter was unnecessary, she decided. Not worth accepting money from another, nor someone in such a position as he - he did not look exactly well put together himself. She almost scoffed at herself for thinking such a thing. She was no where near the comfort he had anyway.
He has nothing to gain from this. Duvaineth thought it best to continue her ignorance - but when he spoke, she looked at him with a start. It'd been days since someone had actually addressed her at all. Her pale eyes stared at him for a moment, before she shifted her position so that her body fully faced him. She swallowed, which served to hurt her dry, aching throat.
"That's a little rude, don't you think?" Her voice was small, and her accent thickly English. Her frail hands searched for something to do, awkwardly pulling at the tatters of her jackets lining. Her face tilted, and a street light sent it's rays to her, illuminating her pale face properly. Ghostly was the most fitting word for her, though she was never far from that as a breather.
"I do not need your pity, stranger." She shook her head at him, letting her red hair fall around her, framing her jagged edges. "Or your money. I'll do just fine."

Cosimo laughed. Not because he thought the girl’s plight was funny, but because he thought it amusing that people continually thought he was being rude or insulting. That was his first conversation with Elizabeth. He’d rounded the corner and been startled by the slight figure of his sire trying to break into some random building. He had sworn, yes, but not to insult her. The curse words had slipped out due to the situation, due to his own surprise. But the woman had insisted. Perhaps she was so old fashioned that merely swearing in the presence of a female was an insult in and of itself.
This one, however, thought Cosimo was being rude simply because he stated what he could see. He could see the way the blueness tinted her pale skin, the way homelessness clung to her like a bad smell. No, she did not smell bad. She smelled…
… and that was when Cosimo figured out what was different about her. There was no heat radiating from her body. There was no human warmth. There was no slight but tell-tale rhythm of a heartbeat. His new predatory instinct did not see this woman as prey. As food. Instead, she was—in a way—kin. Cosimo had no way to determine how old she might be or how long she had been a vampire. Of course, he had no way to find out anything about her past or how she had got into this predicament. Maybe it wasn’t even a predicament. Maybe it was a hunting tactic. And of course she looked like death. She had died. She was dead. Dead but still living.
Cosimo quit his laughing and dropped down to his haunches. Maybe to bring himself down to her level if only so she wouldn’t see it as someone superior giving something to someone inferior. He shook his head.
”I do not see it as rude. I see it as stating the obvious. You do not look well. You look…” he swallowed. What was the word he was looking for? ”You look hungry,” he said. It could be construed in many ways. His voice, as compared to hers, was laced with a heavy Italian accent.
”You are stubborn and you do not want charity. So we will work something out, yes? You can pay me back one day, perhaps. You do know that you can buy, from the shops… the kind of food that you need? From specific shops. The blackmarket ones,” he said, his voice getting quieter. He didn’t particularly want to be overheard.

She forced herself to breath out, then in, though the action was completely futile. She didn't not need the air, but she liked how it felt when it filled her unneeded lungs. She flinched back as the stranger dropped lower, and tried her best to not bare her teeth like an animal. Something about being so close to this man riled her up, and made her feel small.
"I don't know what you're talking about.." She hoped, prayed, that if she played dumb he would go. Of course she could see that he was like her - his chest was still, his movements precise and almost seeming practised. Like a man who has walked this world for a long time. Duvaineth was not sure if she should be scared, but she was. She did not feel strong, not like this stranger.
"You should go, really. I can't repay you for anything when I have nothing." Her voice becomes chilled, much her like skin. Her hands, with her worn-down nails, scratched nervously at the brick of the wall behind her. She was unarmed completely, but she knew she could run. Though she hadn't tried that in a day or too, since the hunger really set in.
Is he tormenting me? What could I have for him. He should keep his money for his own necessities. Her teenage mind reeled with outcomes to this situation - none she could think of were positive. Her first encounter with another of her kindred and she felt sick with fear. She shamed herself.

Cosimo was not happy with the girl’s reaction. For many reasons, really.
He wasn’t the type of person, really, to take anyone else under his wing. The girl seemed afraid, anyway—maybe Elizabeth would be better to deal with this. Would she? Would Elizabeth care? It kind of filled Cosimo with a thrill that he still had plenty to learn about his own sire. Being only about two weeks old in this life himself, there was still a hell of a lot he needed to learn. He was still growing into his new skin.
He didn’t move. Didn’t get any closer. But nor did he get up and leave. Just because she continued to be stubborn didn’t mean Cosimo would walk away from her. Even if she refused his help, he felt that she needed a bit of a pep talk. Even when he had reached his lowest point, Cosimo never gave up. He always knew life would bring something new his way, and if it didn’t, then he would go and seek something out. Homelessness was a hard hole to crawl out of, however. People judged too quickly and too severely. It was a vicious circle. All you needed was a single hand to help you back onto your feet. That was all. That was all Cosimo was offering, really. A jump start.
Of course he never expected that he would be turned into a vampire, but hey! Living was living, even if his body didn’t work quite the same way anymore.
”You are just going to live like this forever then, are you? You have no hope that you will find your own ways and means in the future? See – you take what I give you and you tell me you will pay me back. It gives you a goal. And if you work toward that goal and you reach it you will survive. If you do not have any goals you will not survive. Do you not want to survive?” he said.
Was he scolding her? Maybe. Maybe just a little.

The way he spoke caused lips to pull back in a grimace. He reminded her of her father. Lecturing, but good natured. It made her heart soften a little bit towards him, but she did not want to appear that way. She stood up in the alcove, leaning against the wall, head tilted back a little.
"Suppose I take your charity," The word 'charity' seemed to burn her tongue. "Where do I go? Where can I... Feed?" Her voice sounded a little strained. She hadn't come to terms with it yet, though she was aware of her situation. She hated the thought of blood. She was never queasy, or fainted around it, but the taste disgusted her as a human. She struggled to bring herself to image enjoying the metallic substance. It had been a week, she thought, since this transformation. Perhaps less. The nights seemed to merge together to her.
She eyed the stranger carefully now. Still defensive, still ready to at least try to run. But more accepting of his presence.

Cosimo stayed crouched down for a few long seconds, even as the girl stood up. Maybe make her feel like she has power over him for a while. He really was no threat to her. None at all. He wasn’t really too sure why he was so keen to help, either. She looked so innocent and alone, though. Like lost puppy, but a puppy with a bite. There were plenty of things that Cosimo could lament about in this life, but at least he could claim that he had a sire who had kept him close and who hadn’t made him fend for himself. He wondered where this girl’s sire was, and whether he or she knew about her. When he stood, he tried to do so without that sympathetic frown that threatened to take over his brow.
”I have been told the blood bags can be bought from the shops, if you prefer not to … from the source,” he said. He wondered how long it had been since she had fed, if she didn’t know how or where.
”The source can be tricky. There are a lot of watching eyes, and you cannot be interrupted. If you are seen—again, I have been told, and have not experienced it myself—you will be in trouble. I do mean… I have, from the source. Sometimes the source is poisoned, though…” he took a breath that he did not need. He had a feeling he was talking too much and too fast.
”The question I ask—do you want to know how to get it from the source or would you prefer the security of a blood bag?” he asked.

A small smile appeared on her lips as she watched him fumble. It disappeared however, as she considered the options concerning her.. Nutrients. Both repelled her for now, making her pause. "Do you.. Do you prefer, the source?" She talks with steady pauses, considering each word carefully.
Words were important. They got you places, especially when you're less than apt when it comes to violence. She relied on them heavily, but right now, they stuck in her aching throat and each sentence demanded time.
Well, she certainly had a lot of time, at least.
"I don't know if I'm strong enough to.. Take someone, like that. But a bag.. Being able to see it.." She pulled a face, scrunching her nose as if smelling something bad. She had to consider; Would she like it, would it be as bad as she thinks? Would she get caught.. Would her Sire punish her. She had no clue which he would like her to chose, so this stranger had to do. She needed the guidance, though she hated to admit it to herself. She'd certainly never say it out loud.

Cosimo gave a nod that wasn’t really a nod, because it had a fair amount of head shaking involved, too. Yes, he preferred the source. He shouldn’t, due to the many times he’d been poisoned, but he now had a regular donor who didn’t mind his teeth sinking into her neck every night. It was easy for him. The source was readily available. Sadly, Elise wasn’t his to offer to anyone else. He kept that little bit of information to himself. And, he hadn’t tried anything else other than the source.
”I have not tried the blood bags. I do prefer it fresh,” he said with a slight grimace. They were talking about human blood, here. Even he hadn’t yet become fully accustomed to the idea.
”I do not think strength has anything to do with it. And I think even as you are now, you are still stronger than any human. The first time… well, my sire helped me the first time. But it was… it was almost like instinct, si? You have a thirst and it is like another being living inside if you, telling you what to do…” he said, slowly. He did not know whether that was just him, or whether it was the same for everyone. He hoped it was the same for everyone, otherwise he was now just talking out of his ***. But, he would leave it up to the girl. Whatever she preferred. If the former, he would help her to find a shop. Maybe he would try a blood bag himself, to see how it compared. If the latter, he’d help her find a human and hope that it wasn’t poisoned.
