♡ Come dine with me? ♡ (Closed)

Things between Levi and Lorelai had been strange ever since she rather thoughtlessly told him she loved him. While the admission was nothing more than a fact, said in the moment, it seemed to unsettle the male somewhat. At least this is what Lorelai blamed their recent distance on. Levi had returned to the state of unwilling participant in their relationship, leaving Lorelai feeling more than a little dejected. The only spark of hope she had was the fact that he was still yet to leave her. While the dynamics of their relationship had shifted, he did still visit her nightly. A part of her had been waiting for this to stop. For him to leave her entirely but he didn't seem to be going anywhere and had even told her that he wasn't through with her. The blonde was confused as to exactly what this meant and could only hope that their relationship would naturally return to what they had before. She missed his touch, his kisses, etc. The physical side of their relationship had come to a screaming halt and while he still allowed her to be affectionate towards him, he himself had withdrawn from such practices. This was the reason for the meal she would make him tonight. She wanted to spoil him in a more 'normal' way and while neither of them could taste what she would make, they would at least be able to enjoy the texture and smell of it.

The farmer's market was busy. While most of these events usually ran during the daylight hours, Harper Rock was a little different. Almost everything ran later than usual and so being a vampire barely seemed to hinder anything one might want to do on a nightly basis. It was the one saving grace to no longer being human; one could still pretend. This was something that Lorelai was better at than most since she had a healthy glow about her and maintained a greater degree of her humanity, making it almost impossible for her own kind even to spot her for what she was. Basket in hand, she wandered through the stalls and stopped from time to time when she spotted something she needed.

The meal she was cooking for them would require a fair amount of preparation, so the sun had not long set before she'd woken, dressed and left her apartment. She didn't usually leave without seeing Levi and having him boost her blood but tonight she could not wait. As always she was wearing a simple summery dress that was not really appropriate for the weather with her heavy, beige cardigan wrapped around her for protection from the elements. Her long, wavy hair was down and hung over her shoulders when the wind wasn't whipping it about her face.

Lorelai had no real need of a list of ingredients but since she had not cooked in some time, and since this night was so important, she had made one to make sure that she didn't forget anything. The menu for the night would consist of leek and potato soup, creamy mushroom lasagne and exotic fruit kebabs for dessert. Lorelai was still vegan at heart and so meat would not be featured on any menu of hers and would definitely not be found in her kitchen.

It took her a full hour to find everything she wanted in the market. She probably could have found everything she needed in ten minutes but she had stopped to talk to the farmers and allowed herself the time to choose the best each stall had to offer. She wasn't looking for low prices in the shop, she was looking for high quality. Just because she couldn't taste the meal, didn't mean it shouldn't be the best it could be. Besides, as she'd told Levi, she would be taking the leftovers to a local shelter when they were done.

Her basket was full to bursting and she had two carrier bags filled with goodies as she began to make her way home. Despite the late hour, the market was still bustling and so Lorelai wasn't surprised by the fact that she had to weave in and out of the crowd as she made her way to the exit. Once or twice though she sidestepped no-one, or it would have seemed that way to those around her, as she was one of the few people that could see the spirits. One was following her and chattering away at her side but she ignored it as best she could, as she would be unable to deal with it till she was somewhere out of sight.

She was just making her way down the street on her way back to her tower block when the load she carried suddenly lightened and she turned to see some of her ingredients rolling around on the sidewalk.

"Oh my stars," she exclaimed softly to herself as she stopped and began trying to gather up her belongings before anyone could step on them.

Obsidian eyes stared at the phone in his hand, willing it to beep or chirp or anything but stare vacantly back at him. A cold breeze stirred the unrepressed lengths of his hair – too short to be folded into the braid that trailed down his back – leaving the dark strands to whip around his features. With a gloved hand, Shiro pushed the strands back over his ear; a vain attempt to keep control, much like staring at his phone. There was more of a chance of him catching hypothermia than there was in actually getting a response to his text message. It was still early in the evening and Levi was probably too busy or otherwise engaged with his reflection to answer. Levi generally was a busy man, or, at least he did well to feign such. It was difficult to tell with the Italian because he was always so secretive; a trait that was both a humungous frustration and perfectly admirable strength.

Shiro didn’t mind that Levi was a skilled liar, only that he was often the target for such bold-faced deceits. A part of him understood this just to be the man’s way of keeping everyone at a distance and away from learning too much about him, unveiling his weaknesses as a result. He knew how much Levi craved power and control over things and he watched him lie, cheat, steal and manipulate his way into getting exactly what he wanted. Perhaps Shiro should have known better than to trust anything the man had to say with this in mind, but it was difficult for Shiro to keep a level head around the man. Besides, Shiro was arrogant too and a perfectly credible liar; he convinced himself on an almost daily basis that he didn’t mind how shitty the Italian treated him.

After letting loose a sigh, Shiro returned his phone to his coat pocket and drew the long, fur-trimmed lapels over to shield him from yet another cold breath of wind. Canada was quickly becoming his least favourite place in the world. If it weren’t for business, he wouldn’t have come at all, though that didn’t mean he was in a rush to get to the office. His text to Levi detailed such, informing the Italian that his plane had been delayed due to bad weather when in actual fact he’d arrived a day before planned. Shiro just needed some time to himself, some time to think without being pestered, and he was sure that Levi wouldn’t mind it if the Japanese man was a few hours off schedule; it would give him something to gloat about later, something new to throw in the shark’s face.

On that irritated thought, Shiro’s attention lifted to the world around him again. He was about to kick off from the wall he’d been leaning against to take a stroll around the city when he heard a voice to his left and then saw a few mushrooms and vegetables and fruits cascading down the path toward him. Slender brows knitted themselves into a frown and he bent over to collect the unruly food items that had tried to make a break for it. He followed the trail to the woman in the teal sundress who’d exclaimed something odd to his ears, and tapped her lightly on the shoulder to get her attention. Shiro put on a small smile – too easy for him to look unintimidating – and he bestowed the gathering of food he’d balanced in his arms.

“Excuse me. I think these are yours?” he said, his voice light and cheerful. Obsidian eyes looked down at this offering and then back to the blonde with the bright blue eyes.

“Oh. Oh my. Thank you,” Lorelai exclaimed in her usual soft manner.

The female wasn’t the sort to raise her voice so even when she did exclaim something, it was rather softly done; though the warmth and gratitude of her words lost nothing in the quieter expression.

“I…”

Lorelai looked down at her now full arms as she too had stooped to collect what she lost. The bags she had were full to bursting too and she was unable to take the food the gentleman had so kindly collected for her and was now trying to return.

“Oh… I have no-where to put them.”

The blonde was embarrassed and her cheeks took on their all too familiar pink hue. Lorelai was possibly the only person on the planet that could be ashamed of herself for the actions of her shopping. The nice man had not only stopped to help her, but was trying to return the items to her and there was nothing she could do to facilitate the process.

No Lorelai.
What did I do now?
It’s not what you’ve done. It’s what you’re thinking of doing. The city is a dangerous place. Remember?
But he’s just one man. And he has a kindly smile.
You didn’t fair so well with the last lot of men you met. Do you remember that one?
Yes but that was different. And Levi save us. Me. He was ever so lovely that night.
Yes. I’m quite aware of just how lovely Mr D’Amico was. Though you know that was likely due to the alcohol you gave him for the pain. Right?
You say that like you don’t like him.
You like him enough for the both of us. I’m the voice of reason remember? I can’t go losing my head over him.
But you do though. You like him. You like him more than Pru.
We both do. What’s your point?
That not all men are bad.
Fine. Ask him. He’ll probably refuse anyway.

Lorelai smiled, having been quiet for a moment as the internal war raged inside her mind as always. Things could have been worse she told herself, he could have been a ghost. The fact that he was holding her fruit and vegetables of course proved otherwise. It was still strange that she couldn’t tell the living from the dead at times but she’d come to learn that it very much depended on the spirit itself. Some were more real to her as they were newly dead and had not yet accepted their fate, while others were just incredibly stubborn. Oddly, had Levi not been turned, she could see him being one of the latter kinds of spirits. The men in the warehouse had moved on within moments of their deaths but she was almost certain that their fate would not have been Levi’s.

“I don’t suppose I could trouble you to carry what you have to my apartment could you? Of course I’d pay you for your time.”

Unlike many of her kind Lorelai was not so well off. Everything she did, she did out of love and duty, and while Pru did pay her for the cleaning she did at the club, she would have done it for free. She had done it for free in fact, in the beginning. She had never expected Prudence to hire her and make the position official. Her cleaning job however was her main source of income and while it was more than enough to live on, she knew she wasn’t fulfilling her earning potential. Money was a necessary evil to Lorelai and there were things of far greater importance. Things like Levi’s and Pru’s happiness, like helping spirits to move on, like protecting her kind from themselves and trying to remove evidence of their existence from the virtual world. Money, as a priority, was rather low on Lorelai’s list and she’d happily give away her last penny if she felt someone needed it more. In this case, it would belong to the kindly gentleman before her; a man who looked quite different from most of the inhabitants of Harper Rock, a man that could quite easily be mistaken for a woman in fact.

The gratitude was appreciated, causing Shiro’s soft lips to form a smile. Usually when people thanked others the words were said through gritted teeth. This woman, however, appeared to shrink inward and her gratefulness was offered in a nervous, timid voice. The Japanese man didn’t mind. Shiro looked to the collection of food items in the woman’s arms as she mentioned having no way of receiving the food he’d held out to her and he smiled again, bowing his head briefly with understanding. Of course she couldn’t just accept what he was offering – she physically couldn’t. Since he’d burdened himself with helping her this much, it only seemed right to continue with that obligation. He’d scheduled time to burn after all, so helping some young woman carry groceries to her apartment was just as good a way to spend his time as it was to sulk and brood. In fact, it could even be argued that it was a better use of his time. Shirosame Hiroumi might have been the son of the Yamaguchi-gumi’s oyuban – the Yakuza equivalent of a Mafia Family’s don – but that didn’t mean he was without manners, sentiment and integrity. If anything, Shiro was quite forgiving and sympathetic; when he wasn’t being sharp-toothed at any rate. Sharks were often so misunderstood.

“No need to pay me,” Shiro said brightly as he stepped to her side to follow where she would lead. “Your gratitude is payment enough.” There was a pause and he jostled with the items balanced in his crossed arms so they wouldn’t escape as they walked, then he asked, “Where are we headed?”

The question was asked partially because he was curious and partially because he was suspicious. After all, just because someone looked harmless didn’t mean that they were. Shiro was a living example of that rationality. The 5’9” Japanese man had a sweet façade; his features were soft and fragile-looking with hip-length black hair that emphasised this elegant, fragile, feminine appearance. Shiro dressed consciously, to reflect what he wanted people to perceive. In this instance, the casual attire meant that he wasn’t working and he didn’t want you to find him intimidating. Still, beneath the façade there was the heart and mind of a shark, and the knowledge and intent which served to protect itself and devour whatever it wanted. Shiro didn’t want to think ill of anyone, but he couldn’t be oblivious to threats because of it. Ironically, he was happy to wave that knowledge in the case of Levi and even in the case of some of his other, highly respected companions or associates. Some might think he was too soft to live in the world he did, but the chances of anyone taking advantage were slim nevertheless. The Yamaguchi-gumi were, after all, Japan’s largest criminal organisation. If anything ever happened to Shiro, there would be blood to pay…

Lorelai smiled at him, a warm genuine smile, when he agreed to help her and said that he didn’t require payment. She would of course try to pay him once again once they reached their destination, though something already told her that he would refuse. She considered herself lucky in this moment as her experiences in the city up until this point hadn’t been all that positive; though the last kindly stranger that had come to her assistance turned out to be the very man that she was cooking the meal for, so really she couldn’t consider her luck to be all that bad. Could she? She knew that the city could be a violent and terrifying place, but she hadn’t let it chase her away. She’d come to the place looking to find herself and while she didn’t really like the version of herself that she had found, she could at least appreciate the connections she now shared with some of those in her life.

“My apartment block is just down the block,” she told him, not actually giving the address. “It’s not far. I promise. I shan’t detain you any longer than is absolutely necessary. I know you have no reason to believe me but it honestly is the truth. And I’m ever so grateful for your help. Really I am.”

Oh my stars. Do you hear yourself? You sound like a simpleton.
But I’m not.
Yeah well I know that. But you do make us sound daft at times.

The blonde pursed her lips and tried to blow a rogue strand of hair from her eyes. The gesture however was one of futility and even trying to shake the offending strand loose didn’t help any as the wind soon caught it and deposited it back where it was most inconvenient. In the end, she had to give up and just accept the fact that the universe wanted her half blind for the time being. Once she made it inside the lobby of her apartment, she would be able to rectify this situation and the wind would no longer have any power over her or be able to keep her in her current predicament.

“I do hope I’m not keeping you from anything important.”

That apologetic tone remained. She was still feeling guilty that she was dragging this poor man out of his way and while he seemed more than happy to help, she couldn’t shake the thought that he was just being polite. She’d been half tempted to tell him to dump the produce in the trashcan for her. She could do a second trip to the market to replace what she’d lost and then she wouldn’t inconvenience him further. Only… he did seem genuinely happy to help and she did have a lot of preparation to do. Inconveniencing the man for just a few minutes would save her considerable time and Levi was important enough to her to allow her to burden another like this; she could accept the guilt of disrupting this man’s schedule so long as everything went according to plan.

She wasn’t forthcoming with the actual address, which in reality wasn’t that unusual, so Shiro was willing to shrug it off and follow her to where she needed to be. Yet, something seemed off about this woman. She babbled as if she was nervous, as if like some worried vole expecting to be snatched up by the sky at any moment. Caution pulled the Japanese man’s brows into a gentle frown – gentle because he wasn’t overly alarmed, but bemused by this woman nevertheless. Of course she looked pleasant enough, but why was she so nervous? She didn’t know who he was to be afraid of him, and since no vulgar thoughts ever crossed his mind, it wasn’t like he suspected that she suspected he was some rapist. Murderer, maybe, but it wasn’t that he liked killing people per say. It was just one part of the world he lived in and if he could help it, he often did. Death seemed like such a last resort to Shiro, not because he held onto too much of an appreciation for life, just that when someone was gone, their usefulness was entirely spent. There were millions of possibilities, millions of perspectives, and this woman could have been nervous for a million reasons too. Shiro decided to let it go, to smile and nod and be polite.

“No, not at all,” he said, adding an airy laugh as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I’m happy to help.”

Shiro’s attention lifted from the woman beside him as he surveyed the contents of his crossed arms. Obviously he knew what he’d picked up from the floor, but he hadn’t looked at them as anything more than what they were: fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms. Now that he had the time, he was looking at them from a cook’s point of view. The Japanese man was fairly handy in the kitchen, but he was certainly more a theorist than a physician in the kitchen. Shiro knew a lot about food. He was fascinated with the culinary arts and when he had the time to indulge in his hobbies, he did so by reading cook books, magazines, watching food programmes on the television and even searching online for any blog posts and restaurant reviews. Shiro was a better consumer than a chef as well, so he forever opted to go to restaurants when that welcomed grumble occurred in his stomach. The way to a man’s heart was most certainly through the stomach as far as Shiro was concerned, which gave him another reason to look over the items in his arms and wonder about their purpose. The lack of any protein was curious to say the least, only because it wasn’t typical in his understanding of the Western diet, and he looked across to the woman’s collection of items to confirm he hadn’t missed it.

“So, are you just stocking up or are you planning something special tonight?” he asked casually, not really concerned that it wasn’t any of his business.

Shiro didn’t really like walking in silence, so he rather hoped she would indulge him and chat a while. As a matter of fact, Shiro didn’t really like to do anything in silence. He wasn’t one for people ordinarily, or rather, people didn’t like him, but he did like to talk. You didn’t have to know Shiro for very long to recognise that trait either. Even Yamamoto, Shiro’s long-suffering and obedient companion, would comment on how chatty Shiro was. The shark took it as an insult, obviously, but he wasn’t going to change just because people found him annoying. If he was so hard to tolerate then all they had to do was **** off. Those people wouldn't be missed.

Despite her friendly attitude towards others, Lorelai didn’t make new friends often what with being somewhat shy and burdened by her powers. She had learnt to approach other in the city in a slightly different manner to the one she’d practiced at home, as people here were not quite so open or accepting. In fact a lot of the time she waited to see if they would speak to her before she would attempt to engage them in conversation. Her difference in approach however wasn’t so much an outward thing as an inward one; the timid blonde had come to expect the worst whilst hoping for the best. She was an eternal optimist in anything that didn’t involve her and so had begun to believe that any and all hostility she received while out on the town was entirely her own fault. If she approached someone expecting them to dislike her, it made the inevitable rejection that much easier to handle. With ghosts however she had the opposite effect, or so she believed, the things seemed to be drawn to her and there were times when she began to believe that she would not see another moment’s peace in her afterlife.

“Oh I’m cooking for someone very special. Only…” the blonde’s tone, low and unassuming as it already was, dropped a little further. “I don’t believe he thinks the same of me.”

It wasn’t really appropriate to burden the stranger with her problems but the words had slipped out despite herself. She knew all too well how she felt about Levi but she was no very unsure as to how he felt about her. Before she’d told him she loved him, she was almost certain that he felt the same way. Lorelai could even fancy them to be dating. But Levi had crushed that fantasy when he reminded her that their agreement was to be friends with benefits. Nothing more. Nothing less. Only now, now they weren’t even that. She wasn’t sure what they were. She wanted to go back to the way things had been and he told her that, that was impossible; not that that was going to stop her trying. In this one area of her life Lorelai was all too willing to do whatever it took to win the male over. The dinner was the start of this.

Oh for the love of god what are you saying now?
I didn’t mean to. I didn’t.
But you did.
So what do I do now?
Backpedal. Quickly. This isn’t something this man wants to know. Your love life, or lack thereof is none of his business.
How do I… What do I say?
Seriously Lorelai. I can’t be expected to do everything. Just apologise and turn red like you usually do.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”

Why did you say it?
It’s the truth.
You don’t always have to tell the truth Lorelai. We’ve been over this. You can lie all you like. You were a thief when you came to the city. Remember? You aren’t the good little farm girl you pretend to be.
I only stole from those that could afford to replace what I took. You know that.
I know I know. We’ll talk about that later.

And they probably would too. Lorelai spent a lot of time in her own head due to the nature of her path and abilities and no matter what she did, she second guessed and chastised herself whenever the occasion to do so arose. It was this aspect of herself that she hated more than anything else. She wanted to be as outgoing as CC, as self-confident as Prudence and as self-controlled as Levi. They all had aspects of their personalities that she admired; some more than most as Prudence was of course the very embodiment of perfection. Only she wasn’t like them. Not in the ways that she thought mattered. She was awkward and considered too much the ramifications of saying no to others. She lived to please and while this dinner she was planning was a part of her attempt to curry the favour of the man she loved, it was also her attempt to take some control over this non-descript relationship that she had found herself in. For while Levi would refused to go back, he was still coming to see several times a day as he had been for some time now.

As the flush in Lorelai’s cheeks deepened she added; “I’m a little nervous about this evening. I’ve never cooked for him before and he has a tendency to come and go as he pleases so I’m not even sure if I have the time to prepare a three course meal for us.”

It also didn’t help her nerves any that she hadn’t actually spoken to or seen Levi yet this night and so she had no idea if he even wanted to sit down and eat with her. She had told him that she would make him a meal and he had accepted that fact but he hadn’t really seemed all that enthused by the idea. All in all, this night had the potential to be a complete disaster and to someone who believed in fate and signs, the scattered fruit and vegetables could have been portents of what was to come.

Hearing the woman go on about her boyfriend and how much of a jerk he seemed to be made Shiro frown. He never did understand women; they were like a completely different species to him. Perhaps it was because of the biased and sexist nature of the world, but, women seemed to have this peculiar way of thinking that Shiro simply couldn’t comprehend. It seemed as if they couldn’t function as a person without a man by their side. It seemed that it was all girls could ever think about and talk about and act upon when they were in school; getting a boyfriend. If they didn’t have one, they were nobodies, loners, pathetic and useless. Even as they matured into women, they still would find themselves frowned upon by others if they didn’t have a steady man in their life. If they didn’t have children by the time they’re 30 too then there was clearly something wrong with them. Men weren’t judged by the same harsh tokens, though they were expected to marry a girl eventually and sprout heirs – males preferably. Either way, Shiro didn’t understand it.

Ambitions for men seemed to be about careers, politics, and finding influence and power in the world, with family life coming somewhere down the line. As women fussed over how much more beautiful they were to the ***** beside them, they’re condescended to and given mixed messages over their power as sexual beings. The pursuit of life when you had a vagina seemed to consist of attracting a male and keeping him as all the while being ridiculed and slut-shamed for ever being with more than two or three men in your entire life. Sure, men are often judged by their encounters with the opposite sex, but they are in fact praised for the volume of their sexual encounters – called studs if they’ve been with plenty of women. Ironically, being with few women or none at all automatically classed him as a lesser being, or gay – which naturally had its own negative connotations. That, however, was a completely other problem all together.

One other problem in women’s presumed dependence on the opposite sex, as far as Shiro saw it, was their inability to see or deal with the flaws in their chosen boyfriend or husband. No matter how much of a jerk these men were, she would be beside him through thick and thin. Of course it was just a shallow assumption of Shiro’s, but if there was any truth in it, it was completely ludicrous. He had only known this lady he was walking home but for a couple of minutes, yet he had already began to classify her and had decided that she was likely one of those unfortunate young women stuck in a relationship with a jerk because he didn’t know how to be independent. Shiro sighed under his breath, but he didn’t want to voice his opinion and offend her. Despite his occupational stereotype, he wasn’t actually in the business of upsetting people and pissing them off.

“He should at least appreciate the effort you’re going to,” Shiro said finally. “And I’m sure he probably will. So don’t worry so much.” Eventually he smiled at her again and then, came up with something stupid. “If you want, I can help you prepare for tonight.”

Where the hell had that come from? He wanted to bite off his own tongue. Still, you wouldn’t know it to look at him that he was having an internal screaming contest with himself concerning why he had offered and why he shouldn’t have offered. Shiro did feel pity toward this girl and he did have a few hours to kill. Besides that, if her good-for-nothing boyfriend just happened to show up and be a complete jerk about things, maybe Shiro could lend her a hand there too. What the hell.

The male's offer took her aback, but only for a moment and only because it was so kind. Lorelai wasn't used to city folk being so kind to her, or in general for that matter. Not that people as a general rule were mean to the blonde; she was the sort of person that it was difficult to be mean to once you started talking to her. Of course most city people didn't have the time to stop and chat as most were too busy. The pace of life here was something quite different to that which she was used to, but she was trying to acclimatise. Not stopping and talking to strangers unless she absolutely had to, was just one of the things she had to learn. Lorelai still wasn’t sure what it was that kept most people busy and constantly on the move but then she didn’t try to understand it, it was just something she had to accept and get used to. The young man before her stood out not only for his kind deed, but by his kind words and so having made the offer, it took Lorelai a moment to realise what it was he’d said.

"Oh. Oh my. What a kind offer. Are you any good in the kitchen?"

As soon as she said the words, she regretted them. What she'd said was rude; that is rude by her standards and so she wanted to clamp her hands over her mouth, unfortunately they were already full with shopping and so the natural action was lost to her. The flush in her cheeks was barely noticeable either as the wind kicked up and wrapped her face once more in her hair, cocooning her features and hiding them from view. While it may have hidden many of the visual cues the male might look for, the words that followed explained exactly how she felt.

"I'm sorry. That was rude of me," she admitted. "You are so kind as to offer but I do not even know your name. Mine’s Lorelai. I'd shake your hand by way of a proper introduction but that’s a little difficult to do right now."

The blonde was happy to have the male follow her home. Happy even to have him enter her flat and deposit her groceries in the kitchen counter but she wasn't sure if allowing him to remain and help he was appropriate. Most women would have been hearing alarm bells at such an offer, but not Lorelai. This naive female was more than happy to have a stranger in her home, she merely worried that asking for help to prepare the meal was not only cheating, since she should do it herself, but that it was an inconvenience. To him. Not her. Could she really ask someone she'd just met to help her in the kitchen? Of course she didn't have to ask, he'd offered.

*sighs*
What?
Are you seriously considering letting him into your flat?
Of course.
Lorelai. You already have a complete stranger following you home. Are you sure you should invite him in?
Yes.
*sighs* Levi won’t be happy. He’s going to think you’re stupid.
Why would he think that?
Because you are. But whatever. Do what you want. Don’t listen to me.

Her conscience had a point and she knew it and yet still, she was considering accepting his offer. It had been some time since she’d had the opportunity to entertain someone other than those to whom she was related. Of course she’d also have to contact Levi and Pru and tell them not to tome home until she told them it was safe to do so, as she couldn’t have them appearing in the room and scaring the visit. It was probably a good job that both had keys to her apartment too, for when they needed them. If either questioned her request, she was sure that they would email her and allow her to explain. Email and telepathy being her preferred form of communication. Mobiles were entirely unnecessary for a telepath, especially one as skilled as Lorelai.

“Are you sure you have the time to spare?” she asked, having made her decision as to whether or not she was going to accept.

Shiro found her blurted statement amusing rather than insulting. After all, he’d heard a lot worse in his years.

“Well, I’m not bad in the kitchen,” he chuckled.

As the two were walking and talking, the wind kicked up a small tantrum and howled at the pair. Blonde hair whipped into a fury, concealing peachy skin that blushed a more wholesome shade of rose. The shorter portions of jet hair that couldn’t be tucked into the brain whipped about Shiro’s features as well. He would normally motion to brush the unruly strands behind his ears, but like her, he was too encumbered to act. Shiro took a deep breath and gave his head a few swift shakes to get the most stubbornly clingy hairs from out of his eyes so he could see where he was going. He had to imagine that the woman was having a harder job than he was, however. She’d not restrained any of her of blonde waves and they crashed upon and swathed her features like the tide against golden shores. Yet, being hidden like that seemed to give the woman strength to crawl out of her embarrassment. Shiro had to laugh, and he shook his head more perceptibly as she apologised. He would have made a more vocal mention of this sentiment, but he was soon cut off by an introduction of sorts. He smiled, obsidian eyes smiling as well, and he nodded in understanding.

“Yes, you’re quite right. Maybe some other time then, but it is nice to meet you, Lorelai. You can call me Shiro.”

Although he was smiling on the outside, internally he was feeling uncomfortable again. Introducing himself to foreigners was always a difficult moment for him. He never did quite know how they would react and despite his ordinarily calm and composed nature, his pride would regularly get him into trouble. His name was something of a sore topic. The West did things a lot differently to the East and there seemed to be this assumption that one way was somehow superior to others. Friction was inevitable under such circumstances and all from something as simple as a name. Shiro didn’t notice Lorelai’s brooding because he was busy with brooding of his own. It wasn’t quite the internal conflict, the mental tug-of-war between two halves of a psyche, because he’d probably had a lot more experience making tough decisions and deciding whether he could live with himself. Shiro had found that he could. In fact, the only thing that he seemed to be in two minds about lately was how he should deal with the chaos that was Levi. That wasn’t something he was considering at the moment and obsidian eyes pulled out of the blankness of space and back to the blonde when he heard her question.

“It’s nice of you to give me an out, but I don’t need one. I’d be delighted to help you, but you’re not obliged to accept,” he said, half-smiling. Only now had it occurred to him that she might consider him a threat. “If it makes you more comfortable, we’ll walk someplace else, find you a new bag to carry your goods and you can continue your night as planned… I... It's not really my intention to make you uncomfortable, Lorelai.”
