I hate eight year olds...(solo)

The day Phillip baked a cake with a file inside, I knew we were screwed. Never really knew for sure why we thought it was a good idea at the time. Who would have believed saving a vampire from an eight year old's birthday party would be so difficult? Go in and retrieve the prisoner, they said...it'll be easy, they said. No. No it was not easy. There were two clowns and a mime between us and our mission and they weren't going to let us leave without a few party favors. I sat there in the backyard by the pool, hand on my side as I tried to get the blood flow to stop. The file did nothing against the clowns with semi auto's and a sadistic street performer. Eva was freed but we couldn't get out of the facility. Who was I going to drain for shooting me and where did Phillip go?

I was beginning to feel woozy. The patterns the blood made in the pool water were mesmerizing, beautiful wisps of crimson against a sky blue backdrop. Was that popping the sound of balloons exploding or the random gunfire...heh...I almost thought funfire...from the clowns? I really needed to get to Eva before the blood loss took control and I drowned in the chlorine filled pool. What a crappy way to die. Abruptly, the loudest, shrillest scream erupted from the center of the cacophony. All hands grasped at stinging ears and some of the other children dropped to the ground. It was almost as if time slowed down as I pinpointed the source of the sound and turned my head to look at the kid. It was the birthday boy, chest smeared with chocolate cake and white frosting that reached up to his nose. His face was swollen and beat red from the exertion of such a prolonged howl. His fat gut jiggled slowly up and down as he bounced in tantrum, hands fisted and covered with cake and dirt and grass. And all I could wonder was why I was even there at all. Loved Eva to death, but gods this had better be worth it.

My name is Grace and I was duped into rescuing a colleague, a fellow thief, from the clutches of the father of that little brat. I staggered up from poolside and winced as the wound fussed and bled some more. I found Eva bent over in pain from the hollering eight year old, her sensitive vampire ears rattling like maracas, and went over to her. I took out my pocket paring knife.

"Don't move or we'll both die here." The look of understanding flitted over her features as I touched the tip of the blade to her neck, nicking the flesh there. I rubbed the spot until I had welled up enough blood to work with. Lips met the wound and I drank until I felt the muscles at my side begin to knit back together. That's when I released Eva and turned back to that shrieking babe. Why the hell had noone shut him up yet? Grabbing Eva's hand, I pulled her behind me as I walked toward the eight year old.

I really hate eight year olds.

The single crack of palm to cheek broke the noise in the backyard of the massive house. My hand hurt but damn was it gratifying as the little **** hit the deck in shock. Where in the world was Phillip? Eyes darted to every face as I dragged the broken and bruised vampire behind me. Man that took her really did a number with the silver baseball bat I found on the shed floor. He was a dangerous man and one that did not take theft lightly.
