I never intended to stop into this shithole of a town. It was my agent’s idea. It was supposed to be one week. One lousy week to train up for the big fight on Friday. Some fight. Kid didn’t know what hit him. Did he…
Fight night!
“You’re late, Max. You look like **** too.”
“So do you.” he replied. “What’s the wager?”
“Wager. You kidden me. Listen, hamma.” Kirk, the coach, talked with a cigar outta one side of his mouth. “You ain’t got no lead in the wager since you’re last screw up. All ya gotta do is stick this out and maybe, I said maybe, you can have one next time. You see these young chaps, prancing in their pretty pants and greasy dos. You gotta surprise’em champ.”
“Heh?” Max tipped his head to hear better.
“Surprise’em! You know. Give’em the old, one-two! Or you’re hamma broken or somthin’.”
“Somethin’,” Max replied sarcastically and coach eye’d him hard. “I know, I know. Knock those punks on their asses.”
“That’s the spirit, sport. Now go get cleaned up. You look like ****, Max. Better not be hitting the wall again.”
“Don’t even know it.”
