A Night In (Every)

The candles cast a thin veil of light across his apartment, the television buzzing away with the local news, Every resting comfortably in his arms. These moments with her, the quiet ones that were just for them are a true treasure, a happiness he could never put into words. As he stared down into her beautiful eyes his thoughts drifted back to the moment she had become a part of his life.
“Comfortable there love?” he asked quietly, his nails racking lightly across the back of her neck. He could not help but think of the first time he had gotten to stare into those beautiful brown orbs, only the circumstances couldn't have been more different. Then she had far more intensity, the fire that burns in the eyes of any true warrior. He had baited her into that skirmish, taunting her, questioning her prowess with the blade but for him, it had never been about the battle. After their quick dual he had found himself missing a leg, a ripped arm, and a massive head wound, but there had been kindness, she had taken care of him after...it was in that brief moment of tenderness that he had cupped her face and tasted her lips for the first time.
A large smile creased his lips and he held closer to his chest. “I was just thinking about how we started this. The thinly veiled flirtations followed by letting you receive a lucky victory.” He winked at her playfully. “I can't believe you've actually stayed. When do we get to dance again?” He leaned in and gave her a soft kiss “next time I'm not letting you get so damn lucky.”

She paid little attention to the news, leaning lightly with her back resting against his chest as she read silently from her tablet and blinked momentarily as she realized he was looking at her once more. Tilting her head back, Every looked up at Emeritus and offered a lazy half smile, “Mm, nope. Not in the least.” She lied, and adjusted slightly as if she were trying to find a way to become comfortable and simply stilled in the spot where she had been initially. The shadow reached up to collect his hand at the action, making a face partially before she squeezed it and let go. Her head rested against his shoulder and she chuckled quietly.
Throttling him after he’d called her swordsmanship skills amateur had been rewarding in more than one way; not only did she successfully drained him of his blood entirely, she’d landed a critical wound and hadn’t even been touched in the two minute run. Micah and Velveteen had given him clear warning, and he had learned his lesson. Because he was the childe of someone she loved, Every had begun to clean his wounds. And then he had kissed her. Every was still, even though she wasn’t much to admit it, confused about the entire thing: he had claimed to prefer men to save himself, but then proved entirely otherwise that she was the one he’d been after? As she considered it all once more, she pushed her eyebrows together and then turned her attention back to the dimmed screen on her lap.
“Lucky my ***.” She responded before squeaking lightly when she felt the movement and then curled more into his embrace, her hazel eyes lifting to his features once more as he leaned in. Every brushed her lips to his in response before giving a snort in amusement, the sound far from feminine in the least. “Well, whenever you’d like. However, I don’t believe I’ll be so damn lucky as there’s a difference between luck and sheer skill.” She wasn’t being cocky, either. She knew how to fight for a reason and if she were entirely honest, she’d held back the day they’d gotten together.

He could not resist the urge to laugh quietly at the small woman wrapped in his arms. Since the day they had met there had been a slightly competitive nature between them, she was never one to downplay her skills with a blade-a skill he had tasted in their initial encounter, but one he would always call pure luck. It was nothing if not a sport in taunting her. From day one he had fiercely admired her confidence, though she often put played it down he could not help but love her ego-one that, should she give in to it, could easily rival his own.
Taking the tablet quickly from her hand he tossed gently onto the coffee table before him, pulling her into his lap. "There's no real point in challenging you again love, I've already gotten what I was after and we both know I'd feel bad for kicking your ***." he said with a devilish grin on his face. "And you know my skills have improved greatly since then, if you have finally found your courage I say we give it a go tomorrow night then." Though he knew full well he stood little chance against her in a dual, he had grown extremely fond of the way she would huff and immediately correct him-but it was a fun game to play regardless.
The past few weeks with her had gone by in a blur, getting to know her was both fun and challenging, she was not one that was simplistic by nature..no, she was something the likes he had never seen before. Extremely hard on the outside, but these moments, when she could relax and be at ease, was something he cherished. Fastening his arms tightly around her waist he kissed her again, his icy blue eyes fixed to the sparkling hazel's. He knew she would find some excuse to spare him, but much like the first time, his motives were not centered around the actual sparring.

“I was reading that.” Of course, she often preferred her books to the company of others so it was possibly a good thing that he had taken it away from her. Her attention, as much as she didn’t like to admit it, was often divided and Every listened to Emeritus before she rolled her eyes as he mentioned another fight. “It’s not particularly my courage that I’m concerned for as much as it is your ability to contain blood.” She avoided rolling her eyes once more and allowed her expression to fall back to its usual one.
The shadow moved to stand up before his arms went around her waist and she let him keep her there, closing her eyes as she leaned into the kiss. “I’m starting to think you have a death wish.” She drawled softly after pulling back and lifted her fingertip to stroke beneath his chin with her fingernail. She liked the way the stubble lined his jaw and after a moment, a smirk paying across her lips before she sat up a bit more on his lap. “Warning things can only go so far.” She exhaled.
“Why don’t you decide something that doesn’t involve you becoming completely and utterly useless for a week or more for us to do tomorrow?” Every questioned and took out her phone, logging into the same app to begin reading where she had left off. The glory of electronic devices. This time, however, she glanced up when she figured he’d speak so that her attention was more on him and he wouldn’t take her phone.
