Shark Encounter ((Asteria))

A smirk danced to Charlie's face as she leaned over the table, the green felt brushing along her forearm as she used it to brace herself up, the glossy wood sliding between her thumb and finger as she aimed up her shot. Just before the chalked up cue met the ball, her chocolate eyes lifted to the man she was playing against. He of course seemed a bit distracted, even though she wasn't provocatively dressed in any way shape or form, she knew it was her nature. It was her in general. Her Allurist path made her just that much more attractive, and in this case, she was happy to play up to it. Him distracted meant that he wasn't paying attention to his shots. Sure, that meant that she wasn't so much a shark, but he didn't notice that.

Her eyes turned to the ball again just as her cue hit it, sending it across the felt, tapping one bumper than the other, a means of getting around the eight ball that was dangerously close to the last ball that she needed to send in before she could knock the eight in and claim victory yet again. And in such a moment also claim another fifty dollars that had been bet on the game. Yeah she didn't really need the money, but she so loved playing the other gamblers in the city. Ever since Elliot had taken her under his wing, she felt safe in Lancaster's, not only that, but she felt like she had a semblance of a family again. Granted, she hadn't met most of them save for the greetings on the Crownet, but she had recently met Pi, the leader of the line, Elliot's sire and lover, or was that mate? She'd have to ask him about that later, for now though she was pulled back into reality as the sound of the balls meeting.

She watched as the eight was sent in the opposite direction from the hole it was so it was no longer a threat to her game, not that it really was a threat, and the last ball dropped into the pocket, giving her yet another turn. She turned her attention onto the man again, pushing her glasses up on the bridge of her nose as she walked around to find the best angle for her last shot, "How about we go back to my place after this game?" He said, his voice trying to sound sensual, but really, it just rubbed her the wrong way.

"Sorry, I'm not interested." She said truthfully, leaning down to aim her next shot. "Eight Ball, Corner Pocket." She said and pulled back her cue.

"How about I give you a reason to be interested." He said just as she went to hit the ball, the words shocked her so much that at the last moment she glanced up, and when she did the cue angled down and in that moment, the cue ball went airborne, and hit the floor, bouncing once, twice, and then it went rolling nearly to the stage before it knocked against one of the tables.

No matter how many days passed…it still felt like only yesterday that Asteria had watched Aidan getting ripped away from her by that ***** of a family she used to be with. It still felt like yesterday since she’d triggered her change, shifted into an animal and nearly torn everything apart in her quest to get Aidan back.

It still felt like yesterday that her world had ended.

Though she had gotten Aidan back and life had moved on, she hadn’t gotten over it. She still saw it playing out in her mind as though it were happening before her very eyes. She felt like, at any moment, there’d be blow back, retribution, the other shoe would drop. What if she wasn’t successful in her recovery the next time around? What if she lost Aidan? What if she lost Lancaster? What if she lost the only people she had to look forward to in this immortal life?

With everything that’d happened, Asteria felt less like herself than ever before. More withdrawn, the days had begun to meld together, indistinguishable from their fellows. Rarely did she speak out of Greek anymore, mentally too drained to speak in English for anyone that wasn’t worth her time; More often than not, no one was worth her time. The people that mattered knew roughly what she meant, and prompted her to translate if they didn’t, but she was content to keep her thoughts to herself while in plain earshot, especially while working.

One such work day had been slower, unable to bring herself to deal with the customers in a proactive manner. Thankfully, Elliot was her boss and seemed to understand so she wasn’t penalized as of yet…but she doubted she’d get away with her hands off attitude for long. After that workday was complete, she celeritied over to the pub, ready to do her evening feeding as she was too tired to boost herself in the manner she’d recently taken up doing to keep from unnecessarily being around people. So, it was with this in mind that she’d taken up a seat by the stage, one eye on it while the other remained outward toward the crowd of regulars and newcomers.

Had that ball not come toward her, she wouldn’t even have looked over at the two playing pool; Pool wasn’t her game, and those playing it often tried the stereotypical “here let me help you make that shot” just so that they could get closer to their partners in cheesy fashion. When she’d done her initial sweep, she’d noticed the two. One seemed far too into his companion while she seemed the polar opposite, only there for the game and not the company. But, whatever he’d said had the woman somehow missing the pocket entirely, the ball rolling and stopping just shy of her foot. Brow furrowing, the woman reached down, picking up the black ball with a perplexed expression before glancing back over at table with a look of mild apathy.

Then, if only to see if she could tell just how she’d missed that shot, she rose from her chair, approaching with the ball in hand. Placing it on the table, her brow rose higher, a hip nudging the cool wood as she allowed her weight to shift.

“You know the mpala needs to stay sto trapezi gia na metrisei…oxi?” Asteria asked, the Greek lilt thick as her mind couldn’t quite get the whole of the sentence out in English; Perhaps she could have...if she truly had a reason to, but she couldn't seem to be bothered just then. “Nok enan pelati and you get oxi antamoivi.”

Charlie watched as a woman bent down to pick up the ball that she had sent flying over the bumper and onto the floor. As the woman came closer and eventually set the ball back on the felt, Charlie gave a polite smile to her, nearly mirroring her position against the wood of the table, only she was holding onto the cue stick, her free hand resting atop of the small cube of chalk. The guy was grinning like he had just won the lottery. Of course Charlie hardly paid him much mind other than to roll her eyes as if she knew what the guy was thinking. She wasn't able, but it was easy enough to guess.

As the women spoke, Charlie blinked for a moment, trying to guess what the woman was saying. The first part was a mix of English and some other language that she had never heard before, but still, the bit of English was enough to give her an idea as to what the woman was saying. Charlie gave a little bit of a nod "Indeed, it does, and I am normally able to keep it on the table. Thank you for bringing it back." She said as she turned her gaze to the male, motioning for him to move to the end of the table where there balls had gathered for another game. He reached in and pulled out one of her balls, placing it on the felt before moving to where the cue ball was.

Charlie's attention was drawn away from the male as he was bending over to take his shot as the woman spoke again, this time without a bit of English to help her guess what the woman was saying."I'm Sorry, I didn't understand that..." She said and then pulled out her phone, calling up the app that would allow her to translate whatever the woman spoke next, if she decided to speak again. "What is that, out of curiosity?" She asked, hoping that the question would prompt her to speak, it would also give Charlie an idea of what to set the translator too as well.
