UPDATE: Weapon Crafting & Metalworking Skill

This is a pretty large update, so I'll keep it as short as possible, answer questions later, and hopefully the community will flesh out the details for a wiki article soon (which we always appreciate).
Gunsmithing
There are still a few things to do in terms of image thumbnails on other pages, component distribution, and similar things, but the main aspects of the system are up and running properly. Please report any bugs you see ASAP.
Just to note: there are many more weapon design images coming soon, and I'll work on making the gun images look a bit better when I have some time. Also, there will be a system soon where any artists among you will be able to create signature weapon components (such as hilts or blades) for your entire faction. There will also soon be the option of picking the design of your weapon from all the available public images in exchange for karma.
Gunsmithing
- You can now create guns using any crafting bench (under the new tab "craft firearms").
- Gun making requires the same stats as crafting traps and gadgets; mechanics, intelligence and skill.
- "Extracting parts" lets you break down an item (locked items do not show on the list) into 2 components.
- "Improve parts" is used to increase the overall quality rating of the component. The higher the quality, the more chance you'll have of making something awesome when you assemble your firearm.
- The chance of breaking a component in an improve attempt is dictated by your skills and the quality of the component you're trying to improve. Yes, it's harsh, but if you're having trouble with everything breaking, don't improve components above 10 or 11. There is no limit to the quality you can improve a component to, but once you reach 14 you'll start finding it nearly impossible to get a part any higher.
- You'll need 3 components to assemble a firearm. Stock, barrel and action. You will soon be able to find individual components (of a much wider variety of designs) laying around in NPC fighting areas and some raids, but you can also find or buy weapons to break down into components.
- It should be noted that somebody with low mechanics skill will have a hard time turning a good gun into better parts, and assembling an even better weapon.
- The first user forge is now available in the Abandoned Factory 14 area, at 6, 8. This building can be found in the Newborough district.
- You can also buy forges at the karma shop, or black market (green) shops, also for karma.
- All forge actions require good stats in metalworking, skill and strength.
- Like crafting traps and gadgets, you can fail and break components with this.
- You can create ammo if you have the parts required. Because the parts are quite rare and expensive, you'll be able to create very large quantities of ammo at once (up to about 1100 rounds in one go). The higher your skill stat, the more rounds you'll get out of each attempt.
- Jewelry right now is useless, as you can't create relics. There will be more added to this soon.
- Shaping metals into crafting components is very simple. You take a copper block, for example, and turn it into 2 copper pipes. Blocks are also less rare than they were, and will be easier to find soon when we add new NPC battle areas.
- This also requires good stats in metalworking, skill and strength, and can be done at any forge.
- You can create swords / knives / axes / hammers / polearms / maces and blunt weapons.
- Melee weapon crafting works in a very similar way to the gun crafting, with a few slight differences. Most notably, there are 4 components to a sword, but one of them (the handguard) does not affect the final product's stats whatsoever. Handguards are optional, and do not require additional materials.
- The higher your metalworking skill, the more handguards are available by default. 15 are available right now (if you have 15 metalworking skill), and more will be added later.
