Lara was a cheerful and charming woman. At 22, she graduated with a Bachelors Degree with Honors in Criminology and Forensic Science. Living in Toronto, with 3 siblings, her parents were quite hard on them to achieve academically. Lara was close to her siblings, unlike her parents, Lara dreamed of being an investigator, however, her parents were always worried about her ambitious nature would get her in to trouble, they felt she did not live up to the expectations needed to be a cop. Lara's father, ex military, was hard on her, being the oldest sibling, training her the important morals and drills to make it in life.
Lara felt pressured by her family to succeed. She got herself into a bad crowd, but at some point, felt a sense of belonging as they did not judge her by her standards, she felt a part of something bigger than text books. But she knew she had a higher purpose, she made friends, not all good ones but still she was beginning turn back into the old fun-loving, carefree Lara. She wanted to have fun. Even though she let her hair down with her friends, at times it caused problems with her lack of studying at university.
The care free Lara vs, moms angel
Being in a group gave Lara ownership of her carefree side. Lara felt able to carry out fun pranks on her friends in university and sometimes, the grave yard. The graveyard was their main hang out. As a prankster, Lara pulled funny faces at people, imitated members of the public; drew funny faces on her friends when they were sleeping from too much alcohol.
Lara kept a journal, a diary, that she always kept sacred under locking key. She would write in her experiences from time to time and her feelings.
Journal: One time, Bobby and I decided to trick the guys whilst they were sleeping, we moved them closer as to hugging phase and put each one of their hands into water. " Bobby! Oh my god, look at their faces, hahaha" . By the couch was a camera, "Lets take a photo, Lets take a photo!" Snap Snap Snap the camera went. "They will regret to mess with us girls" replied Bobby. As we giggled, they woke up with huge *coughs* egos. One of them heard saying, "dude why?, how? argh! LARA!. I playfully replied "well, boys, you know shouldn't leave me on my own too long, you know what I am capable of Si"
Journal: The other time, we were in a grave yard imitating zombies and I scared the hell out of Bobby as I pretended to be a zombie and reaching for her.
At home though with the family, Lara was good as gold, she would play with her sisters and be moms little angel. She had 3 siblings looking after, sarcastically she thought to herself, " I have to be on good behaviour". They all played board games, watched t.v. and even cook together.
Journal: My mom did not approve of some of my friends as they were into rituals, the UN-dead and we were rumored to carry out rituals for pranks.
Journal: It was family night, every Saturday, everybody went to the theatre to watch a show and would occasionally have a meal at their friends restaurant. Eddie was a good guy, his son and I got along really well, but there was something famously odd about that guy, I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Journal: On returning home, the cab was late so we waited by an alley. At this point we saw a gang who approached us and requested for a cigarette "Hey Mr, can I bum a dart man? " My father, very relaxed man that he is, slowly reached into his jacket pocket for his darts. Just before he took them out, one of the gang men demanded for his cash too. " Your cash too, NOW, hurry " holding what looked like a sharp knife in his left hand. My dad slowly took out his wallet, it was unnerving and an intimidating situation for all of us, but dad was calm as a button. This guy, he had a tattoo on one of his arms that looked like an owl and he gave what looked a seductive stare at one of my sisters. My father replied "you take your eyes off her, or I swear, she will be the last thing you see". One of the men pushed my father against a wall and a fight broke out. My father was ex military, so he knew a few moves, he had common sense, he ordered us all to run. "RUN! Get out of here!"
Journal: Unfortunately, those moves did not work on these guys, he was outnumbered 3 to 1. It wasn't enough, they all lunged at him like he was a piece of meat. My siblings along with my mum and I ran and kept running. We ran down a dark alley, which had very few street lights, garages at either side, you could hear what sounded like old drunks singing in bars.
Journal: The silence was daunting enough and I could feel the adrenalin inside me, my body was working overtime. We kept running, but they caught up with us. The gang was not far behind us, one guy caught up to my mom, she tried to fight them off, she cut one of them on the face with her keys, looked painful, but they kept going after her and finally after my brother and my two sisters, they couldn't keep up with me. I turned for a second and one guy had pierced eyes and smooth skin, and a bloody looking cheek where my mom cut him, he grinned at me. I will never forget that grin.
From a distance, I swore it was a vampire from bedtime stories my mom and dad told me, when I was younger, however I wasn't too sure, so I kept running and hid out of sight once my legs were too tired to keep going. I kept thinking, I need to go back for them, but deep down inside I knew it was unsafe. When it was safe, I took out my cell phone and called the cops. They came and found me instantly. We went back to the crime scene, where my family was killed, I stayed in the car. All of their cash was stolen, so they assumed it was a robbery gone wrong. After seeing my family laying there, motionless, I made it my mission to hunt the responsible and make them pay for what they did.
Journal: One thing I learned from father, is to not give up, giving up is for wimps. I was a loner for a while, kept myself in Libraries, internet cafes, reading the local news of all crime related incidences relating to similar unresolved murders.
1 year later
It was left in the will of Lara's father that if anything to ever happened to him, Lara was to call up Eddie and he would 'sort everything out'. He wasn't joking about that. One year later, Eddie had contacts in Law and enforcement; and managed to get Lara enrolled into a police academy. Due to Lara's charismatic nature and hard working ethic, she is now an investigator with Toronto Police Department.
Journal: I am now a detective and a crime solver, I cannot believe it. My partner in crime, Josie, a field officer, is very strong willed and has always had my back.
There were many leads to follow about similar murders that occurred in the same areas to her family's' murder, however, one of the leads on the case took Lara and Josie to an old warehouse where a drugs ring was being orchestrated and one of the men involved said he knew a guy who was boasting about a cops family's murder. He struck a deal with Toronto PD and the DA to help me catch them. With his identity remained hidden, he assisted Lara and Josie with the leads.
Journal: One night there was a breakthrough in my families case. This job gave me intel I needed to investigate. I knew I wasn't finished and at peace until I caught those responsible.
In a small town in Toronto, there was a 911 call made out that someone had been attacked. "Oh my the excitement, I could wee my pants, this could be it! " she thought. Lara usually thinks things aloud sometimes. The attackers managed to fly the scene, however, there were droplets of blood that lead Lara to a nearby alley south of the city. The blood trail ended and tire tracks were seen. Josie advised Lara to act carefully, but knowing Lara she replied " Don't sweat it hunni bun, I know what I am doing!". Lara jumped into her truck and followed the tracks to a cemetery. The same cemetery her family was buried in. "This can't be a coincidence", she thought to herself. Lara called for backup as she saw a gang near the mausoleum. Two of the guys looked familiar to her families killers. One killer had a scar on his left cheek, where my mom struck him with her keys. " YAY MOM! " she retorted. The other had an owl tattoo going right down his forearm from his shoulder.
Journal: I recognized that tattoo anywhere and that grin, oh my god THAT grin. I knew that grin anywhere.
Lara startled the gang " Hey guys, remember me?" The guys looked puzzled for a moment and then studied her. The two familiar guys stepped forward, the grins they both made. "Ugh, you there, have you ever looked yourself in the mirror lately? no wonder your hiding in a graveyard dude!" She smirked . Mocking Lara's stance and words " ooooo ewwww, whats with the animosity brat, go home to your mommy, oh wait, aren't they already here?". With that moment, Lara winced and pounced at them. Lara has this impulsive ability to act first and think later. She does everything backwards.
The adrenalin, the vengeance, the hate, angered and twisted inside her, Lara took out her gun and shot them, they were still running, they were barely wounded, Lara got out the rifle, and few bullets struck their heads and they perished.
Journal: The other one ran after me and whilst shooting, I called his bluff and shot him close range. It was now over. All that hate and anguish had lifted. I felt a reprieve. I could finally live my life, that I didn't have this leaning over me.
Lara patrolled the cemetery, she walked and walked around the cemetery, where she to look at her family's' grave stones. There was a bench nearby she sat on it, just looking at their graves and reflecting.
The turning of Lara
Journal: Whilst looking at my family's graves, I looked over and replied, "I finally did it father, I hope you are proud of me". Distracted by my emotions from talking to my father, I heard a twig break behind me, somebody very strong grabbed me from behind, from the grave stone the figure was hooded. It happened in a flash, what felt like two sharp needles pierced into my neck. I whispered as lay helpless "Who are you?". It was what sounded like a woman's voice and she whispered back "Autumn". As I was feeling very sleepy, the last living memory I had was of two people fighting near me, they heard a noise and fled the scene. There was nothing there, all silence, I was alone, at least for now.
