Thanks! At the moment I'm just looking at the Wiki so I can get an idea of what I'm getting into. What is the central plot of this game? Will my character be able to live a sort-of normal life?
The central plot, at a glance, is that around 2011, there was a rift opened between the Shadow Realm and the 'real world' of Harper Rock, which unleashed ancient vampires onto the Earth. At that point, most of the vampires (trayonites as they were referred to back in the day) had been wiped out during a holocaust event.
The plot since then has revolved around the vampires and humans of Harper Rock, since that's where vampires can return from the dead if killed. The game's story progresses through roleplay as well as through a Chapter system. I can link you to some resources like pre-game history and chapter history if you want to get a grasp on that kind of thing. We actually just finished up chapter 6, so the wiki itself may not be updated for that just yet.
To answer your question though, depending on the type of character you have, they may be able to live a fairly normal life. We try to ground everything we do in a certain amount of realism. So think of the genre as modern realism with fantastical/supernatural elements as opposed to purely Urban Fantasy.
