How did she know it wasn’t bad? How the heck could it not be bad!? She wanted to yell that at him, but she had to shut up, listen for the moment. She said she was going to give him a chance to explain, so she needed to just listen. He was right. She had been a human not too long ago. But so many things had changed since then. What did he mean what it felt like not knowing? It felt like nothing because she didn’t know...she wasn’t missing out on anything because the possibility wasn’t truly there in her mind. It was all fiction. Getting preyed on? No he was wrong. He didn’t understand. She couldn’t keep quiet and keep listening. She had to interject here.

“You are mistaken, Stagger. Not all of us were ‘preyed’ on as you said. You’re talking as if something bad happened...that a random vampire found me, and decided this would be my life whether I wanted it or not. That’s NOT how it always happens. Do you know where I was when this life was offered to me? You’re assuming a bunch of crap. I was in the hospital. I was dying. I had cancer. They couldn’t beat it. I had been going through treatments for years...nothing helped me. My entire highschool time...I was either in bed sick at home or in the hospital. My life as a human was nothing and it was very quickly ending. My sire offered to save me.” She paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to best word it. “He gave me a new chance at life. And that’s how this life is offered to so many of us! It’s a choice a lot of the time. It’s something that we want.” That’s not how it was for everyone...look at many others in her family. Mouse hadn’t wanted this life but it was forced on him. However, he was leading a very bad life and well he probably would have been killed or had a crappy life and this was a better opportunity for him.

Once again she sighed and closed her eyes as he mentioned victims For the most part, with the Masquerade in place, vampire feedings weren’t too horrible. In fact many vampires used blood bags. But he was right, some just couldn’t seem to help themselves. That’s what the Masquerade upholders were for. Her hand pushed away at the phone. She had seen many things in her time of being a vampire. She didn’t need to see his video to be made aware of how bad it could get. “Stagger...love, listen. We have our own rules. We have our own authorities that take care of vampires like that. If they are caught...they are punished. Vampires aren’t always bad like that. Humans can be just as bad. I mean look at all the serial murderers out there. You have just as much death and destruction within your own ranks.

A hand came up to rest against his cheek. “You obviously don’t know as much about our kind as you’d like to think. Or maybe it’s that you don’t know enough about your own. Every culture and race and group of people...they all have bad within them. There will forever be the crazies. But that’s why there are authorities in place, yeah? Humans take care of their own and we take care of ours.” She pushed a kiss to his cheek. “And what are you portraying to the world? The bad...You are showing that we are monsters. Monsters to hunt down and kill. Look at me, Stagger...am I a monster? Is that what you see in me?”

He was now more and more getting the impression that this discussion was going nowhere. Why was he even here wasting his time with this argument? She was here because she for some weird reason had fallen madly in love with him. At least that was what the young woman claimed.

But he? He sure hadn’t taken her to his place to argue all night about existential questions. This young woman was not like the Countess was when he found her, not a feeble frightened fledgling, but a stubborn confident and at least somewhat experienced vampire. He had his opinion, she had hers. And right now it didn’t seem like a good point at all to say, ‘alright, lets forget about this argument, honey and have some hot makeup sex’.

“I never claimed that all vampires are evil and monsters, and have to be destroyed, actually I think that vampires and humans could co-exist quite alright” he said somewhat tiredly.“All I want is to be able to defend myself. Because you know there are many who are a threat to humans’ safety.”

He smiled at her kiss, and took her hand in his gently as he went on, “I do not think you are a monster. I think you are a sweet young girl, and I have to be very grateful to the vampire who saved you. I am not running this place because of people like him or you”.

That was easy to clarify, and he hoped she’d get that. What was much harder - most likely impossible - to explain to her without getting too harsh was how much he loathed the ‘vampire police’. “I am running this place because I’ve seen too many bad things done to humans by vampires. Its not upon me to punish every one of them for any wrongdoing. But I want to be able to defend myself and my friends. Where I come from you don’t call the police, you take things in your own hands.”

“I’ve seen too many bad human cops in my life”, he almost said ‘I killed too many bad cops’ but that wouldn’t have helped his argument, “to ever trust one of them. And your ‘vampire police’ it’s even worse than the human police from what I know. Close friend of mine, really good girl, brave, strong, right mindset, had quite some trouble with these guys. Then was turned against her will. Wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those guys who hunt the masquerade violators as you call them. The only ‘protection’ I as a human get from those assholes is that they’d kill me or turn me if they’d see me as threat to their masquerade.” He made a spitting sound. Stag almost spit out in contempt for that very jerk who had forcibly turned his best friend. But the carpet was too expensive. And the decorating was Mini’s work. “I am not a sheep. I do not wait patiently to be slaughtered or see my friends get slaughtered.”

He realized now he was starting to rant. Time to finish.

Looking into her eyes, he added with a calmer voice, “see I am not at all against vampires. I am just defending myself. And I want to help others to defend themselves, too. No vampire can do that for me. In the end everyone has to stand up for themselves and for what they value and hold dear.”

She stood there, close to him, listening to what he had to say. She couldn’t argue with his first point. She wanted him to be able to defend himself against any and all harm that could ever come to him. She didn’t want him hurt. Teeth chewed on her bottom lip as she pondered that aspect of it all. “Since you know of us...of course you should be able to protect yourself to your best abilities. Not everyone is good. Our vampire “police” as you’d say, aren’t perfect. They make mistakes. I make mistakes. I got caught feeding numerous times...they killed me for it. It was horrible. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It’s a learning experience. I am much more careful with my feeding now.” This conversation wasn’t about her, it was about him and what he was doing. She needed to focus.

“I can understand where you are coming from. I understand what you are saying and why you have this place. I understand that you want to be safe and you want your friends to be safe. You think humans and vampires can coexist...I think eventually we’ll have to. So many people here in Harper Rock know about us already. We can’t hide anymore. But you...even with your best intentions are throwing us right out there.” Her eyes closed in thought, her head dropping some. “You have this place to teach about my kind. But humans...they always focus on the bad. Most won’t see that we can be good, or care that we can be good. You all are our life source. Most will not be ok with that.”

He had closed the coffin, so she moved over to it and hopped up onto the container, using it as a seat. Coffins were a myth. She had only met one vampire who chose to sleep in one of these things so far. She preferred the comfort of a nice plush bed. What other myths did he believe about her kind that were utterly false? She would have to explore this place and his mind more to find out.

The thing she had said about getting killed was interesting. He had heard about the place called the ‘Shadow Realm’, but he didn’t understand much. Vampires seemed very reluctant to talk about this place, even among each other. Therefor he decided not to ask her about it right now.

Instead he sat down on the coffin and listened as she continued. Shaking his head at her words, he gently placed his hand under her chin as Kaelyn’s head dropped. “Open your eyes and look around. What do you see,” his other hand pointed at the items, “stakes, garlic, bibles, crosses, vampire novels… . Is this really the truth about your kind. I don’t think so...” He grinned, “there is some truth hidden in between these trappings of folklore. But only those who already know recognize them. Don’t tell me you feel threatened by all these gimmicks.” He gently kissed her lips.

Taking her hands in his, he said, “Let’s do something else. I’ve got an idea for a game we could play.”

As she felt his lips press to her own, she couldn't help but feel comforted. Her body leaned in against his and she sighed some. It was true most of what he had out to view was ********. All myths about vampire lore. But still there stuff visible was muchly about how to defend against a vampire... Which portrayed them negatively. "It's not that I feel threatened by this stuff... Just what it shows to others about me and my kind. It does kind of worry me."

Her hand moved towards his do she could lace her fingers with his. Sliding if the coffin she looked up at him. "What would you like to do?" She thought for a moment... "What real stuff do you have on vampires?"

“I didn’t make this stuff, I am just collecting it”, Stagger Lee replied to Kaelyn’s worries, “bring me some more positive stuff on vampires and I’ll exhibit it too”.

As her fingers lace through his he gently brushes his against hers and spoke with a smile on his lips, “questions, questions, questions. You still have a lot of them.” He gently pulled her closer to him now, looking into her eyes as he continued, “which will be what the game I have in mind will be about. As this is my place here, it will be played by my rules.”

“You may ask me whatever you wish. But to get an answer you will have to do a little task for me. I will chose the task and will make it match the question in difficulty. All of these tasks have to be completed within this room, and none will include anyone but you and me. No task will jeopardize your ‘masquerade’. No completed task, no answer.”

He studied her reaction to his suggestion as he went on. “I will of course have questions to you too. As you do like the kissing I suggest that for each question I ask, you get one kiss from me, and you pick the spot, even if it is the back of your foot or the inside of your armpit. Up to you.” He grinned, looking at her. “Are you game?”

Display the positive? How can you show the positive? What is there to show that actually shows the positive? From what she could think at the moment, there was no tangible proof. It’s just something that has to be seen, witnessed. Kaelyn sighs and just shakes her head.

Of course the girl still had questions. He knew too much or too little...either way it was dangerous and it was exposing. She needed answers. She chewed on her lip nervously as she listened to his proposition. Eyes were searching his, trying to see what he was playing at. Was it ok for her to do the things he was going to ask of her? Stagger had said she would not be breaking Masquerade...maybe it’d be ok. Maybe he wouldn’t ask her to do anything that could put herself or anyone else in danger. This was his place, they’d follow his rules. She would allow him to believe that until she deemed otherwise.

Kaelyn had a look of contemplation over her face before she finally nodded. She agreed to the game and his rules for the time being. The idea of having him kiss her though...in different places...that had sent a shock of panic coursing through her. She hadn’t had that sort of affection before...or was it even affection? Either way even the mere thought of it was sending her straight into a panic attack and she had to shake her head no. “I...asking you to kiss me all over...even silly places...I can’t ask. How...how about you reward me as you see fit.” Teeth tugged at her bottom lip some more and she nodded her head to finalize her agreement to the game.

Waiting for her reply to his suggestions he studied her reaction. He saw the sudden panic in her eyes, and for a moment was afraid she was about to turn down his offer. But it seemed it was just the last part of his idea she didn’t seem comfortable with. Maybe she had a very religious upbringing and didn’t like the idea of getting too intimate. Could vampires be religious? He had no idea. Maybe he’d ask her at some later point.

Her final assent brought a big happy smile to his face. Damn he was getting excited about this. “Okay then”, he replied, “I thought though you’d like the kissing”. He reached his hand out to gently run his fingers through her hair. “Any suggestions on what kind of alternative reward you’d appreciate? Or do you leave that up to me?”

Fingers twisted at the hem of her shirt, tugging and pulling at the material. “Well, I do like it when you kiss me. It’s nice. I like it a lot actually.” Her feet shuffled back and forth some as she stood there next to him. “I just….if you want to kiss me, you can. I don’t want to tell you to kiss me. I’ll leave the reward up to you.”

The hand that had been holding his, squeezed a little and she offered him a smile. “I’m going to start with the questions. How did you know that I am a vampire?” She was curious about this because in her mind she hadn’t done anything to give it away. At least she hadn’t thought she had. Tongue ran over her teeth real fast...nope fangs were put away. That was the only dead give away she could think of.

“How could I not want to kiss you”, he smiled and touched her cheek with his lips lightly before she asked her question.

He grinned at the question. “That is an excellent one”, he said, “but of course to get your answer you will have to do something for me”. He paused for a moment to think, letting his dark eyes wander across the room before they returned to her, looking into her eyes as he told her of the intended task.

“Lets start with something easy”, he said with a mischievous smile, “you look quite fit, you think you are able to do a handstand for me?” A handstand in a skirt, that would be interesting.
